Zeus was the supreme god in Ancient Greece, the father of the Olympian gods and the ruler of mankind. He was identified with the Roman god Jupiter and associated with other deities, such as the Egyptian god Ammon and the Etruscan god Tinia.
He was regarded by the Greeks as the god of all natural phenomena on the sky; the personification of the laws of nature; the ruler of the state; and finally, the father of gods and men.
Zeus was the last child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Zeus had five older siblings. Two brothers (Poseidon and Hades), and three sisters (Hestia, Hera and Demeter).
Cronus had learnt that he was destined to be overthrown by his son as he had previously overthrown Uranus, his own father. His wife Rhea, knew that he would kill the baby so she sought Gaia to devise a plan to save him.
Finally, Rhea she gave birth to Zeus in Crete and hid him in a cave and he was raised by Gaia.
As mentioned previously, Zeus’ father, Cronus, had sired several five children by Rhea, but he swallowed them all as soon as they were born. After reaching manhood, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings in reverse order of swallowing.
Then he released the brothers of Cronus, the Gigantes, the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes, from their dungeon in Tartarus.
Zeus married his own sister, Hera, the goddess of marriage and monogamy, but was giving her plenty of reasons to be jealous, since Zeus was renowned of his numerous lovers As a result, Zeus fathered plenty of children.
By Hera, Zeus sired Ares and Hephaestus (who would be both Aphrodite’s lovers) and Hebe, the goddess of youth.
He had love affairs with Demeter (the Goddess of the Harvest and Perspehone’s mother), Leto (the Goddess of Motherhood), Dione (the personification of a more ancient Mother Goddess), Maia (a Nymph) and Thetis (A Sea Nymph and leader of the Fifty Nereids). Also Metis, (one of the Okeanides and the Titan goddess of good counsel and advise) was his lover and his first wife and Athena (the goddess of wisdom) was their daughter.
Among mortals she had several lovers such as Io, Leda, Europa, and even the handsome young man Ganymede, to whom Zeus granted him eternal youth and immortality. Seleme was also among them and with her Zeus sired Dionysus (The god of Wine).
Zeus was the god of regulated time as marked by the changing seasons and the regular succession of day and night, in contrast to what his father Cronus represented before him; absolute time, meaning eternity.
As the personification of the operations of nature, he represented the glaws of unchanging order, by which both the natural and the spiritual world were governed.
As the father of the gods, Zeus ascertained that each deity perform their individual duty, punished their misdeeds, settled their disputes, and acted towards them on all occasions.
The symbols of Zeus were the scepter, the throne and the thunderbolt, which was as a gift from the Cyclopes after he liberated them. Zeus’ tree was theoak tree and his sacred animal was the eagle. Using his shield, the Aegis, he could create all natural phenomena related to the air and the sky, such as storms and tempests.

“O Zeus, much-honoured, Zeus supremely great, to thee our holy rites we consecrate, our prayers and expiations, king divine, for all things to produce with ease through mind is thine. Hence mother earth (Gaia) and mountains swelling high proceed from thee, the deep and all within the sky. Kronion king, descending from above, magnanimous, commanding, sceptred Zeus; all-parent, principle and end of all, whose power almighty shakes this earthly ball; even nature trembles at thy mighty nod, loud-sounding, armed with lightning, thundering god. Source of abundance, purifying king, O various-formed, from whom all natures spring; propitious hear my prayer, give blameless health, with peace divine, and necessary wealth”. [Orphic Hymn 15 to Zeus. (Greek hymns C3rd B.C. to 2nd A.D.)]~

“Zeus at Olympia, One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World”:

On the Left: A fanciful reconstruction of Phidias’ statue of Zeus, in an engraving made by Philippe Galle in 1572. On the Right: Coin from Elis district, Greece illustrating the Olympian Zeus statue.
The Statue of “Zeus at Olympia” was a giant seated figure, about 42 ft (13 m) tall, made by the Greek sculptor Phidias around 435 BC at the sanctuary of Olympia, Greece, and erected in the Temple of Zeus. It It was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, until its eventual destruction for unknown causes during the 5th century AD.In the 2nd century AD, the geographer Pausanias gave a detailed description. The statue was crowned with a sculpted wreath of olive sprays. It had gold sandals, and a golden robe carved with animals and lilies. In its right hand was a small chryselephantine statue of crowned Nike, goddess of victory. Its left hand held a sceptre inlaid with many metals, supporting an eagle. The throne was decorated in gold, precious stones, ebony, and ivory. The Roman “Seated Zeus” sculpture is considered a copy of the original Statue of Zeus, and it was created following the type established by Phidias.

Zeus has always been my favorite God. And why not? He is the King of all Gods!
He was so powerful… And, I agree, he was a very charismatic god… Being Almighty you know… All the best to you, dear Phil. Have a great day. Aquileana 😀
Molto interessante…
un caro saluto Franca
Tante grazie cara Franca. Abbraccio! ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Grazie .
Great post. I like the prayer that mentioned the Earth Ball. This was many years before the history lessons led us to believe everyone thought the Earth was flat.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment…. It is very appreciated. All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Great post Aquileana, and I learned that the scepter, the throne and the thunderbolt are all symbols of Zeus! What do you think friendship symbols are? Perhaps they are stars and hearts ❤ Congratulations on the awards too!
Hi Chris!… Thank you very much for your beautiful comment… And It is great to know that you liked the post and learnt about Zeus and his symbols… He do like to unravel meanings behind symbols, don’t we… And , yes, you are right… Stars ⭐ and Hearts ❤ are symbols for genuine friendships such as ours is. All the best to you. Love and happy week ahead. Aquileana 😀
Thanks Aqui-pie for the lovely comment back to me and great to know about symbols. Maybe you could do a post here at LADA about symbols as they relate to Greek mythology? I just thought of that idea right now! Hugs for you for your Monday! xo
It is a good idea, Chris… I tend to get lost in the genealogies though… But I’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind!.
Hugs for your monday, B2… ❤ Aquileana 😀
Abrazo. Aquileana 😀
Enhorabuena como siempre
Muchas gracias Chus. Un abrazo. Aquileana 😎
From what I see, you might need a little Zeus down there to deal with Cristina.
Nice one LOL 😛
… well she is almost done, I´d say…. Hugs. Aquileana 😀
We can hope… we can only hope… 🙂
We could never run out of Hope when it comes to South America I guess… Sigh… . I hope that you arte getting ready to post again soon!… Anyhow I will be there soon in the few days in order to discuss a post I found interesting with you! Best to you, John.. Aquileana 🙄
Best to stay on the good side of Zeus. I liked that Zeus wanted each of the deities to perform their duties and punished them it they didn’t. Kept them on the stick. I am pretty sure if I asked ten people in the grocery store tomorrow to name a Greek God, most would say Zeus. 🙂
Well he was the ruler of Gods at the end… I by that I mean… He really was 😛
Oh and the last statement regarding Zeus being a very well Known God is certainly accurate… Who do you think would follow him under those same circumstances?… I find hard to say!. All the best to you Lady Sighs… Aquileana 😀
I would think Heracles/Hercules would come close to being second although I guess technically he wasn’t a full god. 🙂 But the film industry may have a lot to do with that.
You are aboslutely right! … Well stated… I can’t wait to catch up with you and see which are the newest poems on your blog… Will be there very soon. Hugs. Aquileana 😀
très bel article Aquileana . Bon week-end à toi 🙂
Merci beaucoup… Aquileana 😀

Zeus, the powerful and mighty the leader of all deities. Mythology would not exist without him! Thank you for another interesting post my dear Aquileana! Best wishes and hugs for you! Take care! 🙂
Very accurate and clever statements dear Avian… Thank you very much for sharing them! … Sending hugs and best wishes.

Swetank! 😎

It seems like sky gods are often the gods that reign supreme. And since Zeus is associated with the thunderbolt, it sounds like he is associated with both sky and war. Any thoughts on why sky gods seem to rise to the top?
Hi Georgia… I have been thinking about your question and I concluded that the allegory of the Cave is probably a good to explain why this God seem to rise to the top… In Plato’s allegory the highest degree of knowledge is related to the Forms or Ideas, which are part of the Intelligible World, and thus related to the sky (i.s eidetic)
The dialogue “Phaedo” contains an extended description of the characteristics and functions of the forms: •Unchangeable •Eternal
•Intelligible, not perceptible •Divine •Incorporeal •Causes of being .
Being the ruler of Gods Zeus couldn’t but be a sort of heavenly God and by that we need to put aside the catolic basis of divinity… If he was so it was mainly because of the previous characteristics and not because a moral issue… Even more keeping in mind that he had many lovers, even male lovers such as Ganymede! 😛
An interesting point is that Zeus ‘ weapons and Shield were said to be forged by Hephaestus who is considered a god who represents the Underworld and Fire… So there are some of his attributes that link him to more terrestrial domains.
Thanks for dropping by…. All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
♠ Plato´s “Republic”: “The Allegory of the Cave and the Analogy of the Divided Line”:https://aquileana.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/platos-republic-the-allegory-of-the-cave-and-the-analogy-of-the-divided-line/
Zeus had to be the most magnetic one of all the supreme deities being the protector of humanity. keeping in mind that he dethroned Cronus , no easy feat.
Absolutely wonderful & interesting post.
You are absolutely right… He was mighty the leader of all Gods and Goddesses and even of all Makind…
Glad to know that you enjoyed the reading. I truly appreciate your visit and comment!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Same our way!
A wonderful informative post again. Thank-you dear Aquileana!
Thank you very much dear Clare. I appreciate your words. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
My pleasure!
Simply Great!!!! 🙂
Dear Aquileana,
It amazes me when Zeus does this: “After reaching manhood, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings in reverse order of swallowing.” How does he do that? Ew… 🙂 This is a marvelous post. Especially, as I was not aware of the following distinction. “Zeus was the god of regulated time as marked by the changing seasons and the regular succession of day and night, in contrast to what his father Cronus represented before him; absolute time, meaning eternity.” So, I am now better informed. Thank you.
Cheers, Ka
Ka! the first line of your comment made me laugh… Strictly saying he started to disgorge with the first one swallowed… As to how (which way)… Well that would be more difficult to say… Maybe he recognized them at first touch or they called them by their names and they replied… Intuitively saying! … EW.
Thanks for the outstanding and clever comment… I am happy to know that you learnt a bunch of new facts on Greek Mythology
Hugs and best wishes to you. Aquileana 🙄
I have been waiting to hear more of Zeus! Besides being the all powerful I too did not know about him being ruler of the seasons and time. Always learning more hear Aquileana. Another well researched post. Sending you all the very best from a very cold Canada today. xo
Dear Sue.. I am glad to know that you enjoyed the reading and Zeus will appear again… I am thinking of writing about his lovers soon, same as I did with Aphrodite… We’ ll see….. Thanks for dropping by!
Hugs from a pretty warm morning here in BA… Best wishes. Aquileana 😀
Happy for your warm hugs Aquileana. Still winter here i am afraid with snow in the forecast. Could we ask Zeus for help?
Oh… but snow is nice isn’t it…. It might be odd but I’d love to see my town covered with a white cloak of snow!… See we always wish what we can’t have… Sigh 💡 Love for a wonderful week ahead! Aquileana 😀
Plan a trip next winter and I am sure we can make your dreams come true. Happy week to you Aquileana! xo
Sigh!… we never run out of Hope when it comes to Wishes and Dreams, which is something nice, I guess. Love, dear Sue. Aquileana 😀
Always enjoy the pictures of the statues as well as the informative article.
Thank you very much for dropping by!. I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Wonderful post Aquileana very informative and fun to read.
Oddly enough I mentioned Zeus in a story I started writing today, and posted before seeing you posted on him first. What a strange coincidence! If you want to read it, you can find it at http://21shadesofblue.com/2015/02/26/lilliput-on-hold-1/
Hi dear Ry! Thanks for your nice words with regard to this post and I am pleased to know that you liked it…
Groovy coinidence!… I will be there for sure if not today in the next few days… Have a great day ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Aquileana,
Thank you for the time you invest in your blog posts. They are excellent.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your thoughtful comment!.
I truly appreciate your words, Dave!
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
Aquileana 😀
Powerful offering,
Dear Aquileana
as appropriate for the alpha male of mythology.
Abrazos fuertes
john
Excellent comment… So clever and well stated… It couldn’t but come from you, my friend… Have a wonderful sunday and week ahead, dear John. Abrazos. Aquileana 😀
“Zeus and Metis, daughter of the Titan Oceanus, were the parents of Athena. But Gaea had warned Zeus that, after giving birth to the girl with whom she was pregnant, Metis would bear a son destined to rule heaven. To avoid losing his throne to a son, Zeus swallowed Metis, just as Cronus had previously swallowed his own children to thwart succession. Metis’s child Athena was born from the head of Zeus, which Hephaestus split open with an axe”. (Link: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070514141355AAcJlrX)
Je t’ embrasse Elisabeth ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Thank you for sharing this. Zeus definitely lived up to his statue among the gods. When he forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings, all I could say was “Wow!”
Best wishes, Sylver 🙂
You have highlighted the most powerful and raw part of the myth, dear Sylevr… I was astonished as I read about Zeus forcing Cronus to disgorge his siblings and didn’t rememeber that!.
Thanks for dropping by, Bro.. It is much appreciated. All the best to you! ⭐ Aquileana 😎
Zeus showed why he was the top gun, especially take on his father like that. I always enjoy reading your post, Aqui. Best wishes for the rest of your week 🙂
Sylver
Thanks a bunch dear Sylver… I much appreciate your words, my friend. Big Hugs! Aquileana ⭐
You’re welcome, Aqui.. Big Hugs in return
Sylver
Zeus got around! Indeed! I had never read the Greek hymn – many thanks!
Regards
Absolutely… well highlighted dear Toritto… 😛
Thanks a lot for dropping by. Sending you all my best wishes!.
Aquileana ⭐
Awesome read Aquileana ~ best of weekends to you!
Hi Mary! Thanks a lot!… Sending you all my best wishes. Happy sunday and week ahead to you. Aquileana ⭐
Happy Sunday to you as well Aquileana!
(My too-early-to-the-party comments on the cameo and painting, got eaten, didn’t they, Aquileana? Tsk!)
Another learning time : ) I had forgotten that Hera was Zeus’s sister. Naughty gods! So the Greek gods were like the Hawaiian rulers–incest is best!
Looking at all the art pieces you have assembled (one of the two best parts of your blog : ) I find this interesting: How very many different versions of Zeus were held by artists with different visions. Yet see how God’s appearance, to Christians, was so firmly standardized by our time. How did that happen? Calling all theses-writers!
Thank you for the brain boost, Aquileana!
–O. Babe
Hi dear Outlier… I saw the comments, now I got to find them as they are surely on the dashboard… But they are there, since always!
It it quiet odd that Hera was Zeus’ wife and sister at the same time… Incest maybe?… A good ancient example here..
You are right as the different versions of Zeus and I’d say that maybe it was because the ancient greeks believed in polymorphism when it came to Gods and Goddesses… Zeus was the metamorphic God per se, as he even transformed himself in eagles or trees in order to capture his future lovers
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your excellent comment. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
When I read this I couldn’t help but think of the polytheistic origins of Judaism and the early worship of Yahweh, there are some similarities.
I find it interesting how religions borrow from earlier versions, and incorporate new elements when adopted by different cultures over the course of centuries.
There is a lot to learn from studying ancient Greek culture, its influence on the Western civilization is enormous.
Hi Chris!. Thanks for the clever comment… I’d say that Mythology is a inexhaustible source of Knowledge… And that the most well known religions nowadays have elements coming from Myths in general.
It is interesting that you brought to the spotlight Yahweh and I will have to do a further research on this subject as well as try to find links between Zeus and the catholicism…
Thanks a lot for dropping by. I truly appreciate it. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Great collection of images and source of information. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot!… Sending you all my best wishes. Happy sunday and week ahead to you. Aquileana ⭐
Hi Aquileana,
I am always learning the new fascinating stories when I read your posts! Some of the details are quite weird though…”Zeus married his own sister”?…”Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings in reverse order of swallowing.”
Greek mythology is really very interesting! Thanks for sharing another fantastic post, dear friend. Stay blessed.
Hi Balroop thanks for your thoughtful comment and I think you have highlighted the more important points on this post…
I also found them odd!. Great to know that you enjoyed the reading and learnt some new facts on Greek Mythology, my friend …
All my best wishes to you, always, Aquileana 😀
My gosh was he virile. Excellent post.
Thanks a lot!… Sending you all my best wishes, dear Donna!
Aquileana ⭐
I hadn’t realized Zeus was responsible for regulated time.
Great to know that you and I learnt that Joseph! … 🙄 Sending you all my best wishes. Aquileana ⭐
Oh yes, the King of the gods! I was mesmerized for the entire article. Thank you so much!
Your friend,
Takami 🙂
Thank you very much, my friend!… Sending you all my best wishes. Happy week ahead to you, dear Takami. Aquileana ⭐
I’ve been thinking about this post all day. Zeus was quite a god. He had everything, yet in a way, he had nothing.
“Zeus had everything, yet in a way, he had nothing”. That is certainly a great thought and I’d say that in that sense Zeus might lack many things, as human do!… Very clever insight!… Thanks and all the best to you. Aquileana ⭐
Thank you! I’m glad you like that.
torno aleggerti con attenzione piu’ tardi con calma, è interessante 🙂
Tante grazie, cara Rosa.. Sono contenta che ti piace il tema. ⭐
Abbraccio! Aquileana 😀
I knew most of this about Zeus but I never tire of hearing or reading it again,xx Rachel
Hi Rachel, Great to know that you love greek Mythology and liked the post!
Thanks a lot for dropping by. I truly appreciate it. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Querida Julie… Es un gusto… Te agradezco mucho tus lecturas y tu comentario, amiga.. Por mi parte es un placer leerte … Me encantan tus poesías. Un fuerte abrazo para vos. Aquileana ⭐
Thank You giving more information about Zeus. I knew something, but now I know more. Your photos are high quality photos as usually.
Hi dear Sartenada 🐻 Thanks for your beautiful comment as it warms my heart!… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Seems to be that in order to become the Father of the Gods, being Libito King helps.
Absolutely, it does dear Frank 😛 … Insert Giggle…
Thanks for dropping by… I appreciate it very much!.
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Very thorough article. Thank you. 🙂

Zeus was such a powerful god and not one to be crossed! He obviously ruled over all the other gods with a rod of iron. I learned a lot about him from your interesting and informative post, Aquileana. Thank you. 🙂
Hi Millie! Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your clever comment!.
I truly appreciate your words. And I am happy to know that you learned new things about Zeus!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Your posts are really awesome! I’ll be sure to keep visiting. 🙂
Thanks Millie… I love your posts as well… Nice to keep in touch!.
Best wishes, ⭐ Aquileana 😀
I really enjoy reading about myths and legends and Zeus is as big as they get. I wonder if you could write an entry about Hades and the legends around him. I’ve been meaning to read about it, as the God of the Underworld, but I don’t seem to get round it… Thank you. 🙂
Hi dear Fatima!… I wrote about Charon and talked about Hades on my post about Persephone… I will have to write exclusively on Hades though, as i still haven’t done so. Anyhow I am adding the links to those two posts I made reference to above.
Mythology: “Charon, Ancient Greek God of The Underworld”.-

I am wishing you a wonderful week ahead ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Mi querida A. 🙂
Aquileana 😀
As usual, I had to read the post a few times to make sure I get the details of the Gods properly. This God, Zeus is especially complicated, and as I can tell, very popular..
It seems to me he is the great emancipator, as he set his siblings free from Cronus’ digestive system, as well setting free the Cyclopes.
This would make people love him!
I think he was a hypocrite, as he wed the Goddess of monogamy, then does the opposite, siring many Gods. Fortunately for Zeus, the Greeks loved their Gods, of which he provided many.
As far as the incest goes, well, nothing new with that where the Gods are concerned.
The granting of eternal youth to Ganymede would be another stroke in his favor with mortals, as well as siring Dionysus (The god of Wine)! Still very popular to this day!
Thank you Aquileana! ⭐ ⭐
Hi dear Resa! ⭐
Thanks for the thorough comment and for highlighting the points that caight your attention when you read this post
The incest thing is certainly an interesting subject here and it is even more mesmerizing because of the fact that Zeus had previously rescued her sister, Hera, from their father’s belly… So he was his hero, lover, brother, husband and even a God who was above her as he was the Ruler of Gods…
As to love affairs, well… he had many… And thanks for bringing to the spotlight Ganymede… How interesting an almighty God might even want to have male lovers… A total different approach with regard to Divinities… He offered him the Eternal Youth in exchange of sexual favours and a previous step… he abducted him with the shape of an eagle which was also one of Zeus’ symbols).
All the best to you, my friend. Have a wonderful week ahead.
Love, Aquileana 😀
Another meticulously written post! Very interesting read and learn about this powerful greek god Zeus… nice sculptures and artwork too. Do hope you have a lovely weekend, Aquileana 🙂 All the best my friend 🙂

Thanks for the beautiful comment dear Cybele… I truly appreciate your words… I hope you had a wonderful weekend and I wish you a great week ahead. Aquileana 😀
This post makes me curious to imagine what it was like back in the day worshipping Zeus and the many Goddesses and Gods. I never thought to associate him with nature but, of course, how could he not be!
You are right, strictly speaking, he was associated with time passing by… Which is something that reminded me of the Horae, [ i.e the goddesses of the seasons and the natural portions of time: https://aquileana.wordpress.com/2014/10/30/greek-mythology-the-horae/ ].
As to the way he was workshipped, there were praises, hymns and even sacrifices. You can read more here: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090907103958AAgQbGg
All the very best to you, dear Diahann!. Thanks for dropping by!. Aquileana 😀

[…] you Aquileana for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger Award (Flowers Version), I’m greatly honoured. […]
Hi Aquileana, thank you for refreshing episodes and details about these gods that I had completely forgotten as, for example, Jupiter’s “boyhood” and the way he had become the head of all the gods. Another great, informative post . Besos. Stefy. :*
Thanks for the great feedback dear Stefi!. I am glad that your remembered a bunch of facts you had forgotten as you read this post… The same thing happened to me! … Abrazos, Aquileana 😀
that’s a god to die for.

Hi there, Amalia! Thank you once again for the lessons!

Zeus was almost as popular as you. 😉 Have a great weekend!
Cheerz, UT
Nice one… LOL 😀 ~Oh, dear Keith, you are very “cute”, If I am allowed to use that quite naive word… All my best wishes to you! … Love ❤ Aquileana 😀

Dennis dixit:” its like he wuz running his own reealitee show or sumthing!!! and hmm sinse he wuz the supreem god of the wurld i suppoze he wuz!!!” ~ Oh yes, aboslutely weel stated my dear Dennis… I love your witty comment. Thank you very much ⭐ All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Very interesting, Aqui… Zeus, aka Jupiter, is the largest planet of the zodiac, well represented by the hulky chunk of masculinity that Zeus / Jupiter is from the pics in your post. Jupiter is the giver of boons as all blessings and prosperity in life are associated with him. Wishing u that in good measure…best wishes… Raj.
Hi Raj! Thanks for your clever comment and for summarizing Zeus’ main features here for us… I truly enjoyed reading your words and it is always a pleasure to have you here, my friend. I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the post here!. All the very best to you and happy week ahead. Aquileana 😀
such wonderfully engaging history!
for some
he sounds like a real man’s man

[…] “Jupiter and Europe” by Gustave Moreau (1868). ______________________________________________________________________________ Zeus was the supreme god in Ancient Greece, the father of the Olympian gods and the ruler of mankind. […]
Congrats on the well deserved award.
Thank you very much!… I truly appreciate your words.
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
O, I love it that he is coupling with Hera, then go on to sleep around.
In some many aspects life were so much simpler before.
Was it common for the gods to sleep with their relatives? It is normally the one law that every culture on earth had behold, no sexual relationship with an immediate kin.
I’d say it is a clear example of incest… Unless they didn’t know they were siblings… Which clearly was not the case, as Zeus himself rescued Hera from Cronus (i.e their father)’s belly… Thanks for highlighting those points… I much appreciate your clever insights here dear Dhyan…Happy week ahead. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Boy, can you imagine how fraught family get-togethers must have been at the house of Olympus? With Cronos, Rhea and the kids all sat around the dinner table at Christmas, for instance…
Rhea: “Would you like to try some of the turkey, dear?”
Cronos: “Can’t I just gobble up Poseidon again? He’s a very tasty lad, that one.”
Rhea: “Erm… no dear, let’s not start that again. Look, there’s cranberry sauce to go with the turkey!”
Cronos: “Hmpff!”
😉
Thanks for another informative post, dear Aquileana! That statue must have been.., wow!
LOL, dear Sue… that’s hilarious… A dose of (black) humour is always appreciated, even more if it arrives on sundays… 😛
Thanks for dropping by ⭐ Sending you all my best wishes!.
Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana,
Another great post on the pantheon of Greek Gods and Goddesses. Zeus is definitely one of my favorites as he the supreme god. It always fascinates me that the Greek Gods and Goddesses did not seem to be held to the same standards as mankind. Not only did Zeus have love affairs with other goddesses, but with several mortals. Zeus definitely provided us with some memorable myths.
Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge of Greek mythology. Best wishes for a great week.
Regards,
Linnea
Hi dear Linnea. Thanks for your thorough and clever comment with regard to Zeus… I have always liked him and it is interesting how the genealogies of Gods come all together as we read about him… No wonder why he was the Ruler of Gods… ⭐ … he had many love affairs and he even married her own sister and abducted Ganymede who would later on become his male lover… He clearly liked to get around 😛
I am pleased to know that you enjoyed this mythological delivery and I am wishing you a wonderful week ahead. All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Ah, to be Zeus for a day…that would be nice 🙂 Wonderful look into this incredible man/myth ~ so well written, and finally can begin to understand Zeus. Cheers!
To be Zeus for a day would be for you almost like me being Aphrodite for a day to me, dear Dalo… We woud surely enjoy getting around! 😛
Thanks for the comment!. I truly appreciate your words. Happy week ahead :star:. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
What do you say we just make it happen ~ choose the day 🙂
LOL!~ Okay: next saturday … Hugs! Aquileana 😀
Perfect. World be warned, next Saturday we rock 🙂
Bring it one… And get ready!~ Love… Aquileana 😀

Fantastic post – as usual 🙂
Nathalie 🙂
So Zeus and Poseidon were brothers…hmmm…now I know where the God of all natural phenomenon learned his tricks 😉 Hugs dear Aquileana!
Exactly…. I wondered why I haven’t before on Zeus as his offspring is a great way to order the Gods and Goddesses’ genealogies and their respective myths… Sigh 💡 … All my best wishes to you! Aquileana 😀
Zeus is about as badass as they come, I guess 😉 He dealt some pretty harsh punishments that’s for sure.
Well… That’s so ture… If you want to be to Ruler of Gods, you’d better get ready for the consequences ahead 😛 Happy week ahead and best wishes to you JWB! Aquileana 🙄
Beautiful paintings! Beautiful sculptures!

Thank you, Aquileana. It’s my pleasure. 🙂 ❤ Have a great week too. Love, Iris
Sending you love for a beautiful week ahead, dear Iris! Aquileana ⭐
Journey to Olimp is long and painful. When I was younger, I went there on foot and drank water from the spring of Zeus. I like to remember it but, God’s Olympští are gone?
Thank you for the beautiful work I admire and love. Anna
Hi dear Anna… Thank you very much for your clever comment and for adding that image depicting the Statue of Zeus at Olympia… I love it!… All the very best to you ⭐ Aquileana 😀
One of the seven wonders of the world, just a shame that so legendary.

Thank you very much dear Ştefania… ⭐
I am pleased to know that you liked the post… Wishing you a wonderful week!. All the best to you, Aquileana 😀
I first came across Zues in awesome 80’s cartoon Ulysses 31 (which is the Greek myths done in the year 3000 and in space!), after that he was always one of my favourites of the Gods. I have a beard but sadly nobody has thought to commission a statue of me, I wait patiently though…
LOL… You’ ll get the statue … don’t worry about the Beard as It is not considered the main attribute in this case!…
Thanks for dropping by dear Ste J… It is always nice to read your words. Have a wonderful week!… Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Liebe Aquileana schöne Geschichten über Zeus da lernt man immer wieder was neues dazu ein herrlichen Start in die Woche wünscht dir Klaus in Freundschaft

Je te souhaite tout de bon.
Bisous 🙂
Merci ma chère Denise…
Je te souhaite tout le mieux … Bisous et bonne semaine à toi. ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Brilliant post, so informative and so aesthetically enjoyable and rich at the same time 🙂 I’ve always been interested also in what the differences are in how the Greeks perceived Zeus and how the Romans perceived Jupiter.
A very clever comment…. I’d say that the main differences might be probably related to the way Zeus and many other Gods/ Goddesses were worshipped… The depictions were overall the same ones…
Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate it…. All my best wishes to you.
Aquileana 😀
An enlightening post! 😉 Loved it. Thank you for building such a fine resource for us mere mortals!
Thanks for the encouragement and congratulations on your poems… I love your writing, Sam!… All the best to you! Aquileana 😀

très beau ton article….bonne journée….Bisous http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/939574IMG3248.jpg .
Merci beaucoup Georges…
Not just a god, but a king and father of gods. A heavy responsibility.
Yes, certainly my friend… But he didn’t care about having love affairs and so on… So it seems he liked to do his own stuff, above all!… :P. Sending love dear Bren… Happy day to you! Aquileana 😀
I expect he made his own rules and lived by his own stars. We can still see them shine today. Lots of love to you, my learned friend!
Lots of love to you, my dear poet friend ❤ Hugs! Aquileana 😀
Cyber hugs and bitmapped love!! 🙂 Brenda
Cyber mega hugs! ❤ Aquileana 😀
LOL Yeah!
One of your wonderful posts!
So much to learn here. I want to personally thank Rhea (and Gaia) for hiding Zeus in a cave, and raising him.
Reverse order of swallowing is interesting – glad it worked out. Zeus was the man of the moment, his father believed in permanence.
Zeus must have been excessively romantic – no wonder men (who happen to be his sons) stare at the opposite sex.
Lovely post, my dearest Aquileana.
Reverse order of swallowing is interesting – glad it worked out… That statement made me laugh…. Well even the original myth is odd in that point, don’t you think?… Your comment is so clever my friend. Thanks for highlighting the points that caught your attention here. All my best wishes and virtual hugs!, Aquileana 😀
Yes, my friend, very odd. But it’s a beautiful post 😄 Tight virtual hugs back to you!!
Hugs for a beautiful night ahead, my dear friend! ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Buongiorno Cara Aquileana
Another wonderful and well written post. Zeus would be most pleased 😀
What I find fascinating about Greek mythology and other myths is the way in which the gods were born. The way it happened and where signifies the importance of their birth.
Of course, Zeus did whatever he wanted, he was ruler and king of all! Such arrogance 😉
Have a great day.
ciao
Luciana
The way that Gods/Goddesses were born is by far more strange than the way they die!… Great comment cara Luciana… Your feedback is always highly appreciated.
I am wishing you a wonderful rest of your day. Abbraccio!, Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana,
I am very happy and honoured that you enjoyed my writing. Wow! your site is amazing – so much information, so beautifully presented. I look forward to following you.
Kind Regards
Andy
Thank you very much for these nice words… What a beautiful way to start the day!… I read many of your poems and they are truly impressive… Congratulations and hope to keep in touch with you… Best wishes. Aquileana 😀
Zeus was busy! It was very interesting to read about him.
Congratulations on your awards!
He was, indeed… Being the Ruler of Gods is not an easy task!… Thanks dear Clowie for your lovely comment… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
Well, he was quite the ladies man, wasn’t he? I lovelovelove those paintings by Moreau. Warmest wishes to you, Aquileana. 🌸
Gustave Moureau was a genius, wasn’t him?… I agree with you and also lovelovelove his paintings depicting Zeus and his lovers… Thanks dear Julie for dropping by!… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana
Love Zeus, but Cronus was such a badass… once again Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters comes back to memory as Cronus is released and with his titans threatens all of mankind and the gods. It’s brilliant.
Anyway, I digress. Love your post… good summary of events and relationships. As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. 🙂
I have never heard of “Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters” … is it a book, a movie, or maybe both?…. I am glad o know that you enjoyed the post, dear Kev. Thanks for dropping by…I truly appreciate it!. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Both… I haven’t read the books, but I’ve seen the movies! 😀 I’ll get the books later, no doubt. They’ll make for good holiday reading in true book form. 😀
Thanks for telling me dear Kev!… I’ll add them both to my to read and to watch lists! … 🙂
Best wishes! Aquileana 😀
My pleasure, Aquileana. 🙂
There are times having a god to blame for the goods and bads would be nice. Then I would worry less, not feel so responsible. Ah, the good ol’ days.
Nice one dear Jacqui 😀 Thanks for the clever feedback!… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
That first image is my favourite again. I love the way he looks. You must go to a lot of trouble sourcing your material, Aquileana. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

O what complicated lives they led! Let me just remember the essentials from the Orphic Hymn 15 to Zeus, which remind me of the qualities of Jehovah, the Jewish and Christian god. Only Jehovah is the only one, there are no other gods he can play with.
“O Zeus, much-honoured, Zeus supremely great, ….. Hence mother earth (Gaia) and mountains swelling high proceed from thee, the deep and all within the sky…commanding, sceptred Zeus; all-parent, principle and end of all, whose power almighty shakes this earthly ball; … Source of abundance, purifying king, … ”
I didn’t know that Zeus could also be “half-horse and half-man” as in the first picture.
“Zeus at Olympia” by Phidias is a magnificent sculpture. And I didn’t know it’s in Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia. I wonder when they acquired it.
Great post, as always. Thanks, dear Aquileana. 🙂
Hi dear Irina! Thanks for your great comment ⭐ … It is interesting that the main attributes of Zeus might be also applied to Jehovah…
Very well pointed out!… As to Moreau’s depictions of Zeus, you are right… As far as I know Zeus used to take many forms in order to capture his potential lovers, so probably that’s what happened also here… As to “Zeus at Olympia”, the sculpture in Russia is a roman copy, because as you know the original one by Phidias was lost for unknown reasons… I am not sure when this statue was aquired but I’d say that should have been during the 19 th century …[ The Hermitage is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, it was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852… Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermitage_Museum ].
Sending best wishes and hugs! Aquileana 🙂
PS: Another interesting link. History of the Hermitage Museum: http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/explore/history/?lng=es
When you respond to my comment, I always learn more. Thank you, dear Aquileana, for the links ,too.

Great to know that, my dear Friend… I always learn from your comments and clever insights, as well!. Love and hugs for your weekend. Aquileana 😀
I highly enjoyed reading your lecture on Zeus, his powers and especially his lovers, sisters included, with whose name and relationships I’ve always difficulty.
Thank you very much and all the best. 🙂

enjoyed this post about Zeus and learnt some more about him – had been aware of his immortal lovers and Leda but hadn’t come across Io and Europa… as always fascinating and educational – thank you!
Hi dear Freya!… I will definitely have to write on Io, Europa and Ganymede… I have already thought about that…
Thanks for dropping by. I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the reading… Best wishes. Aquileana 😀
This is why I absolutely LOVE greek mythology. Or maybe, just maybe, deep in our hearts we all secretly desire to be Gods.
Magnificent post my dear 😉

Another most fascinating read dear Aquileana, Zeus has always appeared to me as the Father of all gods, and I was not surprised to read you also mentioned him as such.. Given he was the Father, I did not surprise me that he was also supposed to have been a regulator of Time within the Seasons…
Reading your very insightful post, I am also now understand more about Zeus the ruler of Gods, .. Many thanks for always your posts are clear to understand.. You have given me a greater understanding and a clearer perspective into an area of Greek Mythology I was so unfamiliar with until I started to read your wonderful posts about them..
Thank you Aquileana, and have a beautiful weekend..
Love and Hugs.. Sue xxx ❤
Hi dear Sue! Thanks for this beautiful comment and for your clever insights regarding Zeus and how he might be linked to Time as it goes by, seasonal changes, (duration maybe?)… I always like to read your thoughts as they always provide me a new perspective on the myths…
I am delighted to know that you are enjoying and learning through these mythological posts!… Knowing that makes me happy, my friend. ⭐
Thanks for dropping by. I am going to check out your updates right now.
Happy weekend and many hugs to you! ❤ Aquileana 😀
Thank you Aquileana… 🙂 What I also love is the incredible art works you always find… I could spend hours looking at them and the sculptures.. I am a bit of a museum freak lol, especially when ever i go on holiday abroad.. I always find the museums and just allow History to seep into my veins 🙂 ❤ Have a restful Sunday xx Love Sue
Hi Sue!. You are lucky to have all the most famous museums not so far away from your place… At least it is not so difficult to get to them!… I also love paintings and Art in general, including Amateur Art, so as to say!… Thanks for your lovely words… Sending hugs & love! Aquileana 😀
Bless you too and have a brilliant Sunday xxx My next post may be a little ‘heavy’ in subject.. but I felt I just had to speak my thoughts and I do that better within a poem.. x x x
I’ll stay tuned, Sue…… Love and happy week to you, Aquileana:D
This interesting article brings out the powerful personalty of Zeus the mighty very well. I remember your earlier post on how Athena emerged from his scull!
Thanks dear Aquileana
Exactly… Thanks for pointing out Athena’s birth!… I am happy to have such a clever reader as you are dear Dilip!… I much appreciate your words and I hope you are having a great weekend so far!… All my best wishes ⭐ Aquileana 😀
I adore browsing this lovely blog, the enchanting art, the gods and goddesses, beautiful work, Aquileana.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment…. Sending hugs !… Enjoy your weekend, Aquileana 😀
Your knowledge astounds me Aquileana and the time you take to educate the ones like me who really don’t know much. I find the kings all too overbearing. Sitting on their thrones and the women seem to be under them, literally. Such is life in this mythical realm. Now who was most powerful out of the females? Maybe your next post?
Thanks for the great comment, K…. I will probably post on one of Zeus’ lovers… Nedless to say that your suggestion is really interesting… I’d say that the most powerful Greek Goddess when it comes to over rule Gods’ mastery was Aphrodite…. ~ I’ll keep your suggestion in mind!… All my best wishes to you! Aquileana 😀
Thanks for the quick reply. I am sure you have posted about her before Aquileana happy day to you.
I did … If you are interested you can type Aphrodite in the Search box on top of my banner!… Thanks for dropping by!… Happy saturday! ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Will do thanks Aquileana.

Beautiful words and images dear Ileana… I am in the South Hemisphere so we’ll be soon entering Autumn…. I am sure that your spring will be a beautiful one! ⭐ Love and happy weekend to you! Aquileana 😀
Most interesting, dear Aquileana ❤
Once again, lovely images and post. Once again, I’m struck by similarities with Indian Mythology. Indra, God of Heaven also wielded thunderbolt, and was also renowned for his lovers. Isnt life strange?
An amazing coincidence… Almost a pattern when it comes to different cultures!… Indra, how interesting… Thanks for telling me… I’ll do a further research online in order to learn more! Have a wonderful rest of your sunday and week ahead~ Aquileana 😀
Yes indeed. Seems like there was one huge common source for all these rich characters & epics. Then they all got diversified into sects, religions and regions. Unity in diversity.
Absolutely… Carl Jung will nod in agreement with you… probably all those myths are archetypical, universal, collective stories, He’d say.
Have a wonderful week ahead Sweetyshinde. Aquileana 😀
Hail Carl Jung!
LOL!… 😀 Hugs!
Muchas gracias Mus… Encantada de saber que te ha gustado… Abrazo grande para vos y buena semana, Aquileana ⭐

Oh my, that Zeus was one busy man! 🙂 xo
He was, indeed 😎 But, being the Ruler of Gods had also its advantages I guess. Love! Thanks dear Deb! Aquileana 😀
I always enjoy paintings of the Greek myth. I intend to go in a trip to Greece this year.
You are very lucky!… If you go, please take some pics so that way we can also travel to Greece, somehow! … Have a wonderful week! Best wishes, Aquileana 😀

Wow. You put so much effort into this one. Very impressive. Thank you for sharing. I didn’t realise he was the god of time. So it was Zeus that unconciously appeared in my artwork called, Big Daddy’s Dating Rules and I didn’t even realise it until now.
Really?… That’s an amazing subtle coincidence…. I will check out your blog soon today!.
Thanks for dropping by… Best wishes and a great day to you! Aquileana 😀
Your very welcome. Thanks for your continuing support. Warmest regards!
Also the other piece that you helped me to understand was my latest one. https://sharmarama.wordpress.com/2015/03/11/satyr-moon/ The image actually implies that there is a Nereid in the water below, so the picture forms a kind of Yin Yang opposition as well as containing pagan contents. This reveals a lot about my unconcious. I was staying on a tropical island and swimming a lot and spending time on a desolate, wild beach during the time that I created this piece. I actually created the Satyr’s face by accident (unconciously)
Mesmerizing image and you are right, there are many unconscious contents there… I love the fact that the branches of the tree are trying to embrace the moon, somehow… Have you ever heard of “axial symmetry”?… Well your “Satyr Moon” would be a good example of it!… Best wishes, Aquileana ⭐
Your work Aquileana, an Hymn to Zeus !!!
Warm greetings from Athens 🙂
It is taken with my cell phone ~ Hope you enjoy it ~ https://www.flickr.com/photos/erato-lydia/15922264335/in/photostream/ –
Thank you very much, dear Doda… What an outstanding photograph!… I much appreciate that you shared it with me. ⭐ Hugs and happy thursday to you! Aquileana 😀
A bit of a cad and a lad, the old Zeus, no? 😉 Beautifully written as ever, dear Aquileana.
Thank you very much! … I am pleased to know that you enjoyed this post on Zeus, AKA the naughty God… 😛 Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
