“Arachne or Dialectics” by Paolo Veronese. 1520.
______________________________________________________________________________________
In Greek Mythology, Arachne was a Lydian woman, the daughter of a famous Tyrian purple wool dyer, who was highly gifted in the art of weaving.
Soon news of Arachne’s artistry spread far and wide and it is said that nymphs from the forests left their frolicking and gathered around Arachne to watch her weave.
All this adulation was more than Arachne could handle and being an ordinary mortal who was quite vulnerable to human failings, she became quite arrogant about her superior skills. She was annoyed at being regarded as a pupil of Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, and began bragging about her skills, proclaiming herself to be far more superior to even Athena.

“Athena and Arachne” by Antonio Tempesta. 1599.
Athena took offense and set up a contest between them. Presenting herself as an old woman.
When they finally met, Athena cast aside her disguise and revealed her true identity to the prideful maiden. “Now we shall see who is the better craftsman, for I challenge you to a contest of skill. The winner shall be honored, while the loser concurs to weave no more”, the goddess declared and took her place before the loom.
Athena gracefully entwined the colorful threads into a prophetic scene depicting mortals being duly punished for their defamatory actions against the gods.
For her offering, Arachne chose to create a tapestry detailing some of the more scandalous moments in the lives of the Olympians. Arachne’s work of art, according to the Latin narrative, featured twenty-one scenes of the various misdemeanors of the mighty gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, Apollo, Dionysus and others.
Although Arachne had shown little respect for the gods by choosing a subject that made a mockery of the supreme deities of the Olympus, even Athena had to admit that her work was brilliant and flawless.
Athena was infuriated by the mortal’s pride. In a final moment of anger, she destroyed Arachne’s tapestry.

Image from Giovanni Boccaccio’s “De mulieribus claris”. 1474.
Unable to cope with her feelings, Arachne decided to hang herself.
Athena stepped in and saved her from that death; but, angry still, pronounced another doom: “Although I grant you life, most wicked one, your fate shall be to dangle on a cord, and your posterity forever shall take your example, that your punishment may last forever!”.
Even as she spoke, before withdrawing from her victim’s sight, she sprinkled her with extract of herbs of Hecate.
Ovid tells us in his book “Metamorphoses, that at once all hair fell off, her nose and ears remained not, and her head shrunk rapidly in size, as well as all her body, leaving her diminutive. Her slender fingers gathered to her sides as long thin legs; and all her other parts were fast absorbed in her abdomen, whence she vented a fine thread; and ever since, Arachne, as a spider, weaves her web. After her transformation, Arachne hid from Athena by weaving the rope on which she hanged herself into an intricate web.

⇒Background and Interpretation of the Myth:

Arachne depicted as a half-spider half-human in Gustave Doré’s illustration for an 1861 edition of Dante’s Purgatorio.
There are many versions of this myth. It may have originated in Lydian mythology; but the myth, briefly mentioned by Virgil in 29 BC, is known from the later Greek mythos after Ovid wrote the poem “Metamorphoses”, between the years AD 2 and 8.
This was retold in Dante Alighieri´s depiction as the half-spider Arachne in the 2nd book of his “Divine Comedy”, Purgatorio.
In Ovid’s version, it is clear that Arachne’s problem was one of pride or hubris, an exaggerated belief in one’s own abilities.
Yet, in other versions the theme is more one of Athena’s envy of a mortal whose skills are at least comparable with her own.
Last, but not least, this myth can be interpreted in the light of economic rivalry between the city of Athens and the region of Lydia. Historical and archaeological evidence suggests that, in the second millennium BCE, Lydia was the largest exporter of dyed woolen cloth in the Mediterranean. In this reading of the story, Athena is Athens, while Arachne symbolizes her native Lydia.

⇒Different Cultural and Philosophical Depictions of Spiders:
In many cultures spiders stand as the creators of our universe and world, and also serve as agents of destruction. The spider has symbolized patience and persistence due to its hunting technique of setting webs and waiting for its prey to become ensnared. It is also a symbol of mischief and malice for its toxic venom and the slow death it causes, which is often seen as a curse.
For example, in ancient India, it is written that a large spider wove the web that is our universe. She sits at the centre of the web, controlling things via the strings. It is said she will one day devour the web/universe, and spin another in its place.

Neith, wears sometimes a shuttle on her head; sometimes a crown.
Egyptian mythology tells of the goddess Neith – a spinner and weaver of destiny – and associates her with the spider. She is often depicted with a weaving shuttle in her hand, or a bow and arrows, demonstrating her hunting abilities.
Neith shared same attributes than Athena. She was worshiped as a virgin. She was considered the guardian of marriage and women, and was believed to have created the world and humanity on her loom. The symbol depicted often above her head is argued to either be a weaver’s shuttle or crossed arrows. Before being connected to this means of creation, she was believed to have worked with the primordial waters as the source.
Egyptian goddess Neith reminds of the Greek Moirae.

The Three Greek Moirae.
The Moirae were the three white-robed personifications of Destiny: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. These three Goddesses work successively. Clotho spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Lachesis measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod. And Atropos was the cutter of the thread of life.
In Celtic tradition, the spider has strong associations with the Druids. This nature-based religion sees the spider as having three distinct characteristics – the Bard, the Ovate and the Druid. The bard is the artist and weaver of webs. The Ovate is a seer that provides perspective, and the Druid is the teacher of Spider medicine. We are told that Spider created the Ogham, an early Irish alphabet that is often seen on sacred stones in Ireland.

Spider Woman, the “Great Weaver” of Native American myth.
Spider Woman appears in the mythology of several Native North American tribes, including the Navajo, Keresan, and Hopi. In most cases, she is associated with the emergence of life on earth. She helps humans by teaching them survival skills.
Spider Woman also teaches the Navajos the art of weaving.
Before weavers sit down at the loom, they often rub their hands in spider webs to absorb the wisdom and skill of Spider Woman.
Similar to other traditions in the Americas, the Mayan Ixchel was the weaving goddess whose whirling drop spindle controlled the movement of the universe.

Ixchel, the mayan weaver-goddesses.
In some imagery she is shown holding a spindle and distaff, and in some she is kneeling with a small back strap loom tied to a tree, like other weaver-goddesses, weaving the destiny of the world.
Furthermore, an ancient Aztec mural painting of The Great Goddess of Teotihuacan was discovered in the 1940s in Tepantitla, at the site of the pyramids of the Sun and Moon in Mexico.

Ancient Aztec mural painting of The Great Goddess of Teotihuacan. The Goddess seem to be related to The Great Spider mythology.
Until the 1980s, the painting was thought to be of Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain and water. The details of the painting suggested a feminine form and there were enough similarities to the North American Spider Woman that it was decided that she was another version of the myth.
In the Vedic philosophy of India, the spider is depicted as hiding the ultimate reality with the veils of illusion. The Vedic god Indra is referred to as Śakra in Buddhism, or with the title Devānām Indra. Indra’s net is used as a metaphor for the Buddhist concept of interpenetration, which holds that all phenomena are intimately connected.
In a different and yet resembling level, Information technology terms such as the “web spider” and the World Wide Web imply the spider-like connection of information accessed on the Internet.

I had completely forgotten the story of Arachne, thank you.
Thank you very much dear GP. I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… Happy Holidays ⭐
Same to you my friend.
I love Gustave Doré’s illustration of Arachne. (And, obviously, your post, which is a wonderful one to read and learn, as always)
Thank you very much! ⭐ I appreciate it!… and, I will have to agree with you as to Doré´s illustration too! 😉 Happy Holidays 🙂
Very interesting post
Thank you very much! 😉 Best wishes to you! 🙂
☺☺☺
The Greek gods and goddesses are a bit like superheroes!
So true… indeed they are!!! Thank you Marissa… Happy Holidays! ⭐
That’s amazing… I have never hard that story before!
Thank you very much!… I am glad that you enjoyed it!. Happy Holidays!⭐
Thank you… Happy holidays too you too! ☺☺☺
wonderful Aquileana!
i’ve learned much here
especially how i’ve been
caught in the web
not even knowing 🙂
Haha! 🙂 you are so clever… I love your comment… thanks so much!!! … happy Holidays to you and yours. 😀
Do the humans in these ancient Greek stories ever learn? Don’t piss off the gods by bragging to be better than them!
The lesson tends to repeat itself 😉 You are quite right!!! … Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment!. 🙂 happy Holidays!
i am so glad you posted this today. I needed some “Spider Energy” 🙂
Ha! … I am glad that this post helped, somehow 😀 wishing you well ⭐
Hi Aquileana,
What a fascinating post on the spider woman and the worldwide myths associated with this. Spinning and weaving are such powerful symbols, particularly how the Moirae weave the fates of humans. It is a good lesson on the consequences of arrogance. Thanks for sharing.
Best wishes,
Linnea
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts… always accurate and well said… Thanks for highlighting the symbolic importance of weaving, as it is also related to the Moirae, those three Goddesses who controlled people´s destiny, beyond life itself … sending you love & best wihes dear Linnea… 😉 ❤
Fantastic post. Congratulations.
Thank you very much Pablo … wishing you happy holidays! 😉

Thank you very much Nannus… I will check it out!!! … wishing you happy holidays! 😉
Reblogged this on Apollo's Raven and commented:
This is a reblog from one of my favorite sites, La Audacia de Aquiles, that was posted by Aquileana on December 13, 2016. This post gives insight to the meaning behind the Greek myth of the spider woman Arachne and provides an overview of similar myths through out the world. Weaving and spinning are such powerful symbols of manipulating the fates of others. A spider spins a web around its prey. The Moirae weave the fates of humans.
Hope you enjoy the post.
Thank you very much for sharing on Apollo´s Raven and for such great introductory words, dear Linnea… sending love and wishing you happy holidays and the best for 2017😉😀
Comme toujours ton billet est très intéressant et instructif. De très belles photos pour agrémenter le tout…Bonne soirée et belle semaine http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/960633P1010284.jpg
Je te remercie mon ami…. Bisous!. Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année, cher Georges!!! 😉
Now I’ve learned about Arachne, and how interesting she is! I had not realized that in ancient India, there was the belief that a large spider wove the web that formed our universe. The section of the cultural conceptions of spiders was of particular interest to me. Thanks for this well-written post, dear Aqui ❤ Also, congratulations on all of the awards ~ wow! You are taking on the blogging world and doing a fine job of it!! 🙂
Whew! I was shivering.
Perhaps I entered my vocational education in a shallow vein, but my major was knitting.
Knitting may not be weaving, however, I was awarded honors. I now think my knitting is parallel to weaving, especially when it comes to webs & mythology.
I have more to say, but that is for tomorrow! 😀
Given your talents, I bet you are good in both: weaving and knitting… 😀 Thanks so much for dropping by dear Resa… I just found an article about Artemis´Festival and tagged you & CB on Twitter, so take a look when you sign in there… Kisses. 🙂
Thanks so much dear Chris for such comment!!!… I am happy to read your words and to know that you found this post interesting… Thanks for highlighting the belief in Ancient India… Schopenhauer took many similar concepts to explain the idea that our world as a representation was mostly “an illusion”… I appreciate so much your words, B2… Wishing you the best. Hugs 😉 ❤
And such a lovely comment back to me here, Aqui! I’m your B2 for always ♥ All the best to you this weekend xx
Thanks so much my lovely… And I am your B1 for ever, of course 😀 ❤ Hugs to you!
Awww I love this comment back to me ~ Friends always ❤ 🙂
I love how every culture adds to the story and mythology behind the name, yet at the same time just as intriguing 🙂 I’ve missed your stories 🙂
Thank you very much Andy… your words mean so much to me!!!…. sending all my best wishes, always! ⭐
Cheers Aquileana ^.^
A beautiful post.
Thank you very much! 💫 I appreciate it 😉
The gods have quite a temper don’t they?
So interesting to hear the interpretations of the myths.
I’m wondering about this: “worshiped as a virgin. She was considered the guardian of marriage”
Why do you think a virgin would be guardian of marriage? Especially since you see this in more than one mythology.
Greek Gods have quite a temper indeed… better not to defy them or try to challenge them in any way!…
As to your question, it is a good one… Being worshiped as a virgin and being considered the guardian of marriage seem to be Opposing attributes. And yet, I guess that marriage has always been considered a sacred (and consecrated) source of marital .. and carnal union… So maybe she protected Virginity… before marriage 😉
The case of Artemis appeared in my mind as I was typing this …. She had said she was never going to marry a man, but she was always surrounded my female companions. Regardless, she was said to be chaste.
Thank you so much, Georgia… wishing you well. Happy Holidays!!!! 😀
Beautiful and interesting post. Thank you so much for including my blog on your list and the nomination! All the best to you, Georgeta
Thank you very much dear Georgeta… your words are very appreciated… happy holidays and happy New Year!!!! 💫
I love all the informative and fascinating information you put in on this Greek myth and comparing it with other spider myths in mythologies around the world.
Thank you very much. I am beyond appreciative to read your words. Wishing you the best! Happy Holidays 💫
Thanks Aquileana for this article. I’m astonished by your amazing work and investigation about myths. I was already in the knowledge in the Arachne’s story, but my informations were far being so complete. I love the way you depict mythological characters. It seems that Athena doesn’t worth more than Arachne. There’s excessive pride in both of them and it seems that the goddess didn’t bear to see herself in the mirror of vanity. 😉 May be redemption and humility would have cured them. Gracias y besos Aquileana.
Thank you very much dear Nadia for such great comment… You have highlighted the most important theme here: Pride… and you are right when you say that both Athena & Arachne are extremely pride of themselves… There is something clearly hierarchical in the way punishment is imparted, so to speak… Objectively speaking, both should have been punished! 😉
Wishing you happy holidays and the best for 2017!!! Besos! 😉
Thanks Aquileana for your answer.
It is my pleasure, dear Nadia! 😀
Thanks Aquileana for your answer. It’s alwas a pleasure to read your posts and to receive your comments. It’s my turn to wish you happy holidays and the best for 2017 ! Besos ! 🙂
Thanks so much for the wishes… Likewise, my friend … 😉 ❤
Besos Aquileana ! Gracias por todo mi amiga : )
Wonderful post as always my friend!
Thank you very much dear Takami . Happy Holidays, my friend 💫
I loved reading about more Greek mythology history and characters. While Athena might have acted on her emotions, by dolling herself up as an older woman that is admirable – looks are looks, and skills are skills which will set us apart from the rest and demonstrate strong character.
Aaaah! Spider!!! I do not like spiders, so scared of them 😂 But so interesting to hear it being connected to Athena and virginity. Spider webs are certainly like webs, and I love how spider webs look like crystals when wet in the rain 😊
Congrats on all the awards. Not only are you such an insightful writer about Greek mythology – which I can now understand – but you are so kind and generous too, talking to all of us. I am so glad we connected and you are so beautiful too 😍❤
Hi there dear Mabel… thanks so much for your clever and well written comment… You have brought an interesting theme: the costume Athena wears… This is something that appears in many myths, and it is mostly related to the world of appearances… At the end, Athena seemed quite insecure of herself doing so, when in fact she could have just shown up as she really was… Also her reaction when she sees Arachne´s tapestry point out in the same direction: she knows that Arachne´s tapestry is better than hers … but can not see in an objective way so she gets angry with her and her quite bold depictions of the Olympians… Rage shouldn´t be an attribute of the Gods-Goddesses one could say.. But this doesn´t apply to Greek Gods and Goddesses. 😉
Thank you very much for such nice words, my friend. I am flattered… and I am also very happy that we came across eachother in Blogland!. Big hugs to you!!! ,) ❤
Congratulations on your awards. You are an excellent writer and I enjoyed you read about Greek mythology.
Thank you very much dear Eugenia. I truly appreciate your words. Happy holidays!!!🙂

Congratulations on your well deserved awards!
Thank you very much for sharing dear Robert… I truly appreciate it… wishing you well. Happy holidays!!! 🙂
Brilliant post on Arachne. Thank you.
I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… Thanks so much!!!! 😉
Wow congratulations my friend on your wonderful nominations, richly deserved! And I loved the story of Arachne, no doubt as I began to read about her weaving and looms that it would lead to a spider story and hence the name arachnophobia! 🙂 Happy holidays to you dear Acqui! xo<3
Thank you very much dear Debbie 💫
I am pleased to know that you enjoyed this mythological delivery 😀
And … well pointed out: this has pretty much to do with the expression (probably in Latin) Arachnophobia! ….
Wishing you the best for 2017… and happy holidays! ;:
Thanks dear girl! Wishing the same, happiness, health and peace to you too. ❤ 🙂
What a tangled web you weave and nicely done too. Congrats on your much deserved awards! 🙂
I love your comment… Thanks so much dear Maverick… 😉 Wishing the best for 2017 … and merry Christmas.
I have so much trouble with spiders. I should adopt Arachne as my spirit animal so I get used to them.
Congrats on your nominations and awards!
Haha!… that could work dear Jacqui!. Thanks so much for your comment here… wishing you the best for 2017… happy holidays!!!😀
Note to self – don’t upset Athena – oh to have seen Arachne’s tapestry!
Quite right… and yes: Arachne´s tapestry should have been stunning (even more of we keep in mind Athena´s reaction!)… 😉
Thanks so much dear Joannne… wishing you the best for 2017… happy holidays!!! 😀
You are just a treasure trove of fascinating information and a genius at putting it all together in such a splendid format and with such great images. I pray you have a great week and a merry CHRISTmas Aquileana! Love and hugs, N 🙂 ❤
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Natalie!. I am very glad to know that you liked the post, my friend… wishing you the best for 2017… happy holidays!!!😀 ❤
My pleasure dear Aquileana❣️Merry CHRISTmas and happy new year‼️❌⭕️
[…] those reading, please visit her blog there’s a good piece on Arachne. Please nominate this blog (however that […]
Oh my goodness what a frightening tale I must say and a sad end with the hanging by one’s own spider web!
I loved how you have included some of your photos too! Always love seeing them on IG and a delight here as well. Sending hugs. Xo
It is a quite raw myth… But it teaches us to avoid being prideful… even if we don´t dare or just wouldn´t defy Gods/Goddesses in an explicit way such as Arachne did 😉 Thanks so much for the kind words and for your priceless online friendship, dear Sue… xo
Very interesting post as usual Aquileana 🙂
Congratulations with all your awards, you deserve them all.
Thank you very much dear Irene… Your words mean a lot to me… wishing you the best … Merry Christams and Happy New Year!! 🙂
Thank you Aquileana and you too 🙂
Always enjoy reading these different mythological stories and this one was very interesting. Everytime I would see arachnoids, I will remember Arachne and her pride which destroyed her. Quite a lesson here and thank you for sharing dear Amalia. Congratulations on all the well deserved awards and thank you so much for accepting my nomination. Have a beautiful day, Much Loves ~ xx ❤ 🙂
Greek Myths always leave us thinking… the myths morals could be useful to us, even nowadays… Punishment comes in mnay shapes, but most times, it certainly comes. 😉
Thanks so much for the nomination… It took me time to post it but finally did 🙂 😉 I appreciate the support and accurate comment here dear Arohii… much love & best wishes for these holidays! ⭐
The lesson I got is that gods are basically jerks.
I did like the summary of all the various myths, but you left out the myth of Aranea Hominis, from Mirum Narratio Picta fame.
I will have to check it out!!!! Thanks for telling me about it!…. happy Holidays, dear Disperser 😉
I had never heard this one before and found it totally fascinating, Aquileana. :O)
Thank you very much my friend… Means a lot!… Wishing you happy Holidays 😉
:O)
As always , very interesting and so well illustrated. It is an education to read your blog.
Thank you very much dear Susan… HAppy to read your words here… wishing you merry Christmas and a happy New Year! 😉
You are so amazing with the stories you pick and the way you present them Aquileana, the far history might just as well happened yesterday…they do speak of of importance of beliefs in the shaping of culture and tradition – life, really :3
Quite right as to the last statement, dear Ina… Thanks so much for such kind words… coming from you they mean a lot… Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! 😉

Another great post from you my friend. I love the photograph of you sitting on the steps. Hiding from a spider ? lol
Have a lovely day dear Aquileana ❤
Thank you very much dear Ralph… It is great to read you over here… And such a funny point about me hidding from a sipider. LOL 😀
Wishing you happy Holidays! 😀
lol. Happy Christmas and even a more happier New Year to you my friend 🙂 ❤
😀 Same to you my friend… xo 🙂
envy, pride, pride, envy, the interpretation tells more about the interpreters than the myth. Thank you very much for sharing this analysis dear Aquileana 🙂
Thank you very much for taking time here… nd for highlighting many common themes among Greek Myths… which often lead to punishment (& metamorphoses at times!) 😉
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, dear Sylvie. ⭐
Thank you for your visit. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too Aquileana 🙂
Thanks so much … Same wishes to you and yours, dear Sylvie! ⭐ 😉
Good to see you around, my southern friend.
Good to see you too, dear John… Sending all my best wishes 😉
Oooohh..this is such a refresher…thanks for sharing this..happy holidays ..
Thank you very much 😉 Happy Holidays to you too. Aquileana 😀
Thank you for the stories of spider mythology and the wonderfully profound quotes! The one by Leo Tolstoy rings true for me: it is kind of annoying when people do good deeds in a showy way.
Thanks so much dear Carolee… Pleased to know that you enjoyed the post … and the Quote Challenge… I was so behind with the latter, but finally managed to post (that and the awards!) 😉 wishing you well… Mery Christmas. 😀
The myth of Arachne is new to me, Aquileana, and what a gruesome tale. Do not compete with the gods, that’s for sure! 🙂 I loved all the world legends of the spider, and their association with weaving make sense. The little creatures are amazing artists, and it’s too bad they have such a bad reputation. Lovely post. 🙂
Thank you very much for taking time here… I am with you: the moral of the myth points out in that direction (same as many other Greek Myths do!)…
wishing you the best … happy holidays. Aquileana 😉
🕷🕸🕸 It’s always nice to read one of your stories about Greek mythology, so much of western culture goes back to it. Knowing and understanding (ancient!) history helps us understand the present. And the origin of the word ‘arachnophobia’! 🕸🕸🕷
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment (including the emojies!!! ;)) Loved knowing that you enjoyed the post… I will stop by your blog soon as I saw you have recently posted a new article… Hugs and best wishes!.
Kudos on all your awards which are so well deserved❣️
Thank you very much ❤ I appreciate it!!! sending love…. and wishing you happy holidays. ⭐
Right back atcha❣️
I always loved the story of Arachne and didn’t blame her for exposing the gods as imperfect beings lol. I also love the mayan mythology of Ixchel and am so pleased you included that and the veil or for us the web of illusion which I think the world wide web is too! Thank you for another fascinating story telling post with all the wonderful symbolism.
Hi there dear Cybele… you are quite right… great comment… Arachne has been very brave to show how Gods and Goddesses might behave… but she was punished because of that. Athena couldn´t stand her attitude… and as you know, many greek gods teach us that you should never defy or challenge Gods-Goddesses.
Thanks for the Veil of Illusion mention, as it is a very important reference, and Philosphers such as Schopenhauer and Nietzsche often used that analogy in their writings…
Sending love & wishing you happy holidays!!!! 😉 ❤
So true! thank you for you Christmas wishes and back to you Aquileana.
Thank you, Aquileana, for another fascinating myth, explained so well, as always. I truly love reading these amazing legends and looking at the accompanying pictures. I shall never look at spiders with the same eyes again, although I must tell you I never kill them when I find them in the house, but pick them up gently and put them back in the garden; after all, they eat flies and mosqitoes, which I really dislike. 👍
Hello there dear Fatima… thanks so much for taking time here and for the thoughtful comment… I like how you conclude your comment… I am always trying to portect insects… haha 😉 even ants and slugs which, by the way, tend to do a huge mess in my little garden 😉 Sending you much love and wishing you the best for these holidays.
Never a good thing to be proud, and boastful; bragging about her skills, proclaiming herself to be far more superior to even Athena!
Thank you Aquileana for a great post, as usual! 🙂
Thank you very much!. Coming from you it means a lot… I am glad to know that you enjoyed the reading… wishing you the best 😉
I am happy to read you. The myth of Arachne is suggestive. It is the forerunner of spiderman.
A smile and a hug
Thank you very much dear Newwhitebear… smiles and hugs back at you!!! 😉 ❤
wow, excellent post,so interesting ,so teaching, thanks so much .Many hugs ❤ I wish you all the best.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Jeanette!. Sending much love and wishing you happy holidays!!! Aquileana 😉
Fascinating, this reminded me of a drama I watched on tv based on Phillipa Gregory books The White Queen with the thread of life being pulled in from the lake I don’t know why.
It’s amazing how often I read your posts then sing songs about characters I’d have never heard of before, my latest is Ganymede.
Have a wonderful Christmas 💕🎄🙋🏼 Charlotte x
Hi there dear Charlotte… tahnks so much my friend. Interesting to learn about The White Queen and the respective TV show… I´ll dig into it later on…
So Ganymede!?… well that´s quite a controversial episode in Zeus´life, considering he was a young man… Homesuxuality was quite common among greeks, so I can see why he is in the list of Zeus´lovers 😉 Wishing you the best. Happy Holidays to you and yours. ❤
I loved Doré’s illustration of Arachne, it’s intriguing. Learnt a lot of new perspectives from your blog, as always. The way you built up your posts with wisdom and knowledge, is always a matter of respect to me.
Congratulations on all the awards…you deserve them rightly, Aquileana… ❤
Hi Mani… Ia gree with you: Doré´s illustration is quite stunning… make me think of Kafka! 😉
Thanks so much for the kind words. I am flattered and truly appreciative!. Sending love! Merry Christmas! Aquileana 😀
Right! Quite Kafkaesque…
True!!!… Thank you Mani …. happy week ahead! 😀
As always, you have brought another piece of mythology to me that I wasn’t aware of. Plus, I also tagged a friend in my tweet of this post who has a thing for spiders.
Thank you very much dear Jeri… And thanks also for the shout-out (I even found a pic of you with other editors in your friend´s twitter and retweeted it! 😉
Happy Holidays and best to you! 😀
Absolutely fascinating. I especially loved how you went on tot talk about how spiders appear in other mythologies. The Dore illustration is amazing. Thank you my darling for this brilliant post
Thank you very much dear She… I am delighted to know that you like the post, my friend. Happy Holidays and best to you!😀
A fascinating post, Aquileana. The spider has been a powerful symbol to so many different cultures over the centuries. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thank you very much!… So pleased to know that you found it interesting, dear Louise!. Love & best wishes 😉
Great post, Aquileana. So this is where the word arachnid comes from. Cheers!
That´s it Jeff.. you got it right!!!! Thank you very much for dropping by and for the comment!… 😀
Such a well researched and written post. Thank you, Aquileana.
Thank you very much dear Don Ostertag… wishing you well… Happy holidays! 😉
Happy Holidays to you, Aquilena.
Hola, amiguita! It’s Cynthia…and I’ve been gone for awhile…I have been too busy with work (50+ hours/week) and in the meantime, I decided to create one website that had all my art AND spiritual wanderings in one spot. Whew. Hopefully I won’t ever have to do that again. LOL.
Anyways, how interesting to learn about Arachne and Athena. I just love those mythical stories. I’ve missed hopping over here; it’s so great to be back. 🙂
I hope you’ve been well, yourself. Abrazos fuertes. xo
Hola Cynthia… qué bueno leerte… I am loving your new website and wish you the best with it!:..
Thanks so much for the visit and kind words my friend… feliz navidad. Abrazos. Aquileana 😀
What a profound and fascinating work, dear Aquileana! I also enjoyed the illustrations you chose. Thank you for the mention, and for the award! You are always so thoughtful ❤ Hope you are having a lovely December. Wishing you Merry Christmas, and a joyous and fulfilling New Year! xx
Thank you very much dear Inese… I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… I am glad that you noticed the mention… better late tahn ever, you know… 🙂
Wishing you happy holidays… sending love ❤
❤
Thank You learning something new, which I did not know. I am glad that You made this post. BTW, I am afraid of spiders, but I do not have arachnophobia. 🙂
Thank you very much dear Sartenada 🐻 I am quite afradi of spiders too… but afater reaidng this myth, we´d better be afraid of Athena 😉
Sending love. Happy Holidays to you and yours 🙂
One only needs to see a beautiful web to know Arachne has talent.
I will remember her for sure next time I see a beautiful tapestry… sending love! 😉
This is a nice blog but please visit and read the new ultimate theory of human relativity exclusively on My Theory also give me some feedbacks as I am hungry for it.
From your latest follower My Theory.
Thank you… I´ll drop by your blog soon!… I appreciate the visit 😉
Me encantaría saber qué te parecen. Un abrazo de vuelta!
Muchísimas gracias por la referencia… Ya mismo paso por YouTube a escuchar y agregar algún tema a mi playlist… Un abrazo grande! ⭐
I love this rendition if the myth! Thank you for spinning a wonderful web 🕷🕸🕷
Thanks a lot for your words dear Val!… Pleased to know that you enjoyed the reaidng!… Love & happy holidays to you. 😀
Dang! I should have sparred the life of that spider trapped in my bath. Perhaps it could have weaved me a fancy tapestry.
Merry Christmas.
Haha!. You crack me up… but gotta say you make a very good point, dear Judge… Happy Holidays to you!!! 😀
very interesting for me your reference to Maya, one of the aspects of the Divine Mother.
Maya – Virgin aspect of the triple Hindu Goddess, symbolized by a Spider, spinner of magic, fate and earthly appearances. The spider’s web was likened to the Wheel of Fate and the spider to the Goddess as a Spinner, sitting at the hub of Her Wheel. Mother of the Enlightened One, Buddha. Her colors were white, red and black. (Wiki)
Thanks so much for adding these relevant poinhts… I have read about Maya´s veil… particularly via Schopenhauer if I am correct (I think Nietzsche too)… Too interesting to learn about these myths… I should have written about her in my post. Sigh!… sending all my best wishes. 😀
Awards, like all the rest in life, is only Maya, Illusion. 🙂
Quite right! 😉 rewarding illusion maybe? 🙂
Poor old Arachne! Perhaps she deserved her fate for being too proud. I guess her belief in her abilities didn’t really seem exaggerated, though (at least in this version), given that she genuinely was better at weaving than Athene. One thing I’ve learned from your blog, though, is never to get into a contest with a Greek god. If I ever meet one, I will politely decline all challenges. 🙂
Haha!— Loved the last line of your comment…. as always, you crack me up with your clever/funny twists… Thanks so much for the visit Bun… wishing you the best. Happy Holidays! 😉
Thank you very much, Aquileana. Happy holidays to you too! 😀
Well done, as always, dear Aquileana. You are helping fill the void in my knowledge of Greek mythology. The story of the spider woman is now one of my favorites of your posts. I like garden spiders that stay outside, but I’ll never be fond of house spiders. 🙂
Blessings ~ Wendy
Hi Wendy! 😉 thanks so much for such nice words… I am very gald to know that you enjoyed the reading! — We´ll never look at spiders the same way, right? 😉 …. sending love & wishing you happy holidays! 😀
Amazing tale and written and illustrated so beautifully as we have come to expect, nothing but the very brightest and perfect display. thank you dear Aquileana, May you have a beautiful Christmas and the happiest of New Years.
💖
I am honoured to read such words, dear Holly!!!! … Thank you very much for the comment and for your support this year… Happy holidays!!! ❤ xo
A pleasure always. Happy Holidays!:)
Thanks so much dear Holly! Hugs!!! merry Xmas! 😀
A very Merry Christmas to you!:)
Ciaoo carissima 🙂

Tante grazie cara Caterina… abrraccio per te… buona domenica 😀 ❤
Buona domenica anche a te carissima♥
Un grande abbraccio
Hi dearest Aquileana, I hope you are doing great. I gave you a shootout on my latest post today. You might want to check it out.
Hugs X
You are AWESOME my friend… I much appreciate the shout-out! 😀 wishing you a wonderful sunday! sending love!… 😀
Informative as always, Aquileana. There is always an earthly reality to all myths, and agree with the assumption of economic rivalry between the city of Athens and the region of Lydia more likely being the original cause. Quite wonderful how ‘word of mouth’ and ‘time’ can produce legend and celebrity!
xoxoxo
Hi there dear Carolyn… You are quite right… I found that interpretation fascinating!… I think it was Robert Graves who first proposed it (as far as I read, it was him 😉 ) Thanks so much for sharing your insights… wishing you a nice sunday… and happy holidays, in advance!!! 😀 😉
Aquileana, this is (for me) perhaps your most enjoyable post ever. When I was young I was quite a seamstress — not the same as weaving of course, but it caused me to feel a connection with the Arachne myth. Here you’ve gifted us with a lovely retelling of that myth. Then you out did yourself by touching on so many other cultures and related spider myths. Brilliantly done my friend. Mega hugs.
Hi there dear Teagan! 😀 Wow, thanks so much my friend. these words mean a lot to me… I am delighted to know that you enjoyed the reading and found interesting to learn about the spider myths in Ancient Greece and other cultures, as well… sending you hugs and all my best wishes. Happy Holidays! ❤
Hi Darling Have a nice weekend! !!
Sherazade🌷🍀🌹
Thank you very much dear Sherazade. And same wishes to you!!! ❤
😚
I’ve learned so much here 🙂
Thank you very much dear Daal ! I am pleased to read that! …. Wishing you well! ❤
Likewise, especially during this hectic holiday season 🙂
Here’s hoping I never see that huge spider who controls the universe!
Haha!!!!… well: that makes much sense… I hope so too! 😉 thanks for the visit, dear Anabelle. Best to you. 🙂
I have been to the Navajo’s Spider Rock in Arizona in the Canyon de Chelly, where they tell the story of the woman weaving the web of the universe.
Very interesting… So we can conclude that there is a “real” background indeed. I appreciate the comment… Happy Holidays & best for the new year ahead! ⭐
Reblogged this on lampmagician.
Thank you very much for sharing!… I appreciate it! ⭐ have a rest of your weekend & week ahead ⭐
and a new start in the next! ❤
Same to you… Happy week ahead!!! 😀
Not only do I love your historical tale and from so many different cultural aspects but I also love spiders. They are such useful little creatures, keeping deadly mosquitoes from our house. I once got an amazing shot of a female black widow spider by just sticking my camera in her nest – I knew she wouldn’t hurt me. Wonderful research and writing, my dear friend. I am in awe of your talent.
Thank you kindly, dear Kerry!!!! reading your words mean so much!!!!. I agree with you as to spiders… I am quite fond of insects in all their shapes and types… excepting cockroaches
I would have loved to see the photograph you mention… It sounds exciting, my friend…
Thank you for the visit… wishing you happy holidays and the best for the new year ahead! ⭐
I enjoy most insects too, even the ones who make me shudder! This is the post with the Black Widow – you need to click on the red link to see the full pdf.

Have a wonderful holiday, too, my dear friend.
Thank you very much for the link dear Kerry!. Wow that spider is HUGE, my friend… quite scary indeed!
I´ll read the PDF soon! 😉
Sending much love! 😀 ❤
😘
I always feel so sorry for Arachne! No-one was allowed to be better at anything than the gods and goddesses. I was interested in all the other spider myths and stories from all over the world. I remember learning about Ananse when I was at school. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anansi Your post also reminded me of Robert the Bruce who while hiding from his enemies saw a spider making her web. Each time she failed to make her web she tried again until she succeeded. He took courage from her example and vowed to continue fighting.

I hope you have very happy holidays and your new year is a happy and successful one my dear Aquileana! xx Clare xx
Hi dear Clare … thanks so much for this further research you have done…
Anansi!— a spider, considered to be the spirit of all knowledge of stories!: sounds so powerful and I loved the tale concerning how Anasis became attached to the whole corpus of tales…
I have read about Robert de Bruce whilst writing this post… It is a beautiful tale… Maybe if I post about other insects, I will link back to this post and mention this two stories you have pointed out! 😉 Wishing you happy holidays and the very best for 2017 my friend. Hugs. 😀 😉
Thank-you very much Aquileana Hugs and best wishes xx 🙂 xx
Hugs back at you, dear Clare!!!! 😉 ❤
❤
I loved seeing your photos dear one so lovely and I never heard this story before which you always write so beautifully ….sending love and joy aquileana …meg💜
Thank you very much dear Meg… Aww. I am glad to know that you liked my pics… they were taken in Brazil, last month!!! 😀 Sending you love & wishing you happy holidays! 🙂
*tsk* These mortals never learn. 😉 I do hate spiders but this was a fabulous post, pictures and all. Happy Holidays!
Thank you very much dear Sarah, for the visist and comment! I don´t like spiders either! 😀 But I am glad to know that you liked the post… happy holidays!🙂:D
Your tales are always mesmerizing! I love your exposition even more than the original myths. You’ve more than earned those awards. Happy Holidays!
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment!. I truly appreciate the positive feedback, dear Anna… best wishes to you… Happy Holidays! ⭐
Another excellent post Aquileana. I learn so much from your writing. Thanks.
Thank you very much dear Dave!. I am pleased to know that you liked the post… happy holidays!🙂
Another excellent and informative post, Aquileana! This was especially neat: “Before weavers sit down at the loom, they often rub their hands in spider webs to absorb the wisdom and skill of Spider Woman.” Spider 🕷 woman is long lived in the collective psyche.
Wishing you Happy Holidays, a Merry time and wonderful start to the New Year. XxKa
Thank you very much dear Ka ❤ Haha! you are quite right.. it seems that certain superheroes long lived in the Unconscious Collective.
And that´s the legenday reason why they have been adopted as Comic and movies superheroes… Great point, my friend… I appreciate the insights and visit… Sending love and wishing you happy holidays! 😀

Fascinating educational post; I’ve so enjoyed reading it and taking in all the information, love how you spin it from the ancient myths to modern Internet. Clever and applicable.
Thank you very much, dear Annika 🌟 I am delighted to know that you enjoyed the post and truly appreciate your words here. Happy Holidays 💛
This is what I’ve been trying to find out about “Arachis”, the plant genus:
“Origin and Etymology of arachis
borrowed from New Latin (Linnaeus), probably derived from the presumed base of Latin arachidna, arachidnē, the, borrowed from Greek aráchidna, of non-Indo-European origin”,
yet one would ask why do the plants’ genus is ‘Arachis’?
I also found:
“Arachis Etymology:
From a- (Gk.: without) and rhachis (Gk.: central axis), referring to the absence of erect branches, meaning, plants from the Arachis genus (such as the peanut plant) may resemble spiders due to the peanut plant branching out underground like a spider web.
Fascinating post Aquileana!
Thank you very much dear Maria. I am happy to know that you enjoyed it!!!! 😀 😉
Interesting eymology and I liked seeing how the word is related to the shape of a spider web in some (pea) plants, which as far as I have just read are majorly native of South America… Thanks so much for sharing this information, dear Maria… sending love & best wishes!!!!. 😀 ❤
Buongiorno Aquileana,
It was interesting to read about the various myths surrounding the spider and their purpose. It’s one of the elements I love about mythology, making sense of the world around you and the fact hubris is never a good characteristic.
Enjoyed reading your informative post 😀
I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas.
ciao
Luciana
Thank you very much dear Luciana!!! I am pleased to read uour comment and to know that you liked the post… You are so right as to hubrys: many greek myths seem to be conclusive in that regard!!! … Wishing you happy holidays… with love & best wishes to you!. 😀
It’s really amazing how many exiting stories there are to tell about spiders and pride, of course! Dear Aquileana, I thank you very much for all the new information you give me and I want to thank you and wish you Merry Christmas and a succesful 2017🎄
Thank you very much dear Martina.. for such kind words and wishes…
Very glad to know that you enjoyed the reading!…. wishing you happy holidays and the best for 2017! 😀 ❤
😀❤️
The Arachne-Athena story is well known, right from my school days. Not content to rest with it, you have, like another Arachne, woven a beautiful tapestry by stringing together the many variations of the same story from different cultures, most of which make for a fascinating read. Indeed, the entire cosmos is an intricate web in terms of its interconnectedness. Thanks Arachne, alias Aqui, for your offering. Here is wishing you happy holidays and enjoyable times ahead….
Thanks so much for such a beautiful comment… I liked your writing and the analogy you have used, dear Raj… Truly appreciative for your words.
Sending love & wishing you happy holidays!!! 😉 😀
dearest Aquileana always so appreciated learning more along the way…and yes i too have been stuck in a web…i’d rather spin 😀 thank you for your teachings ~ smiles and ❤ hedy

You should read some of your own LOL.. likewise oh lady of knowledge of the past 🙂 xxx ❤
Haha! 😀 Why thanks & many hugs, my friend, happy day to you..😘
🙂 xxx (( Hugs ))
I wonder why the spider goddess is always feminine, never a fellow. I guess I’ll have to look it up on the web.
Good question… I guess that could be related to the fact that the (Spider) Mother Goddess is an ancient prototype among different cultures. But, you are right: the modern version is based upon a Man: Spiderman. 😗😉 thanks so much for reading and for sharing your thoughts. Happy Holidays~
You too. And I wonder whether Spider Man will be ranked as a major mythological figure in another couple of centuries.
😀 Maybe… We should propose his name!!!! 🙂 thanks for the comments! 😉
A most interesting and informative post. There is so much to learn and thanks for sharing with us, Aquileana. Have a lovely Christmas and Season’s blessings. Happy holidays! 🙂 ❤
Thank you very much dear Iris 😉 ⭐ It is lovely to “see” (read) you… wishing you merry christmas & the very best for 2017!!!!
As always, an excellent post, Aquileana, which I seem to be very late in reading. I knew little about Arachne but your post has filled in the missing detail beautifully for me. The different interpretations of the story are interesting, particularly regarding the rivalry between Athens and Lydia and I love the various cultural and philosophical depictions of the spider.
Great images – I really like the intriguing half-spider, half-woman by Gustave Dore. I also love the cute photo of you sitting on the steps. 🙂
Thank you for a wonderful post, Aquileana – and I wish you and your family a very happy Christmas.:D ❤
Hi there dear Millie… Thanks so much for the visit, my friend… So pleased to know that you enjoyed the reading and found it interesting…
The interpretation concerning the rivalry among cities isd eloquent, isn´t it!?… I like to think that certain myths and traditional symbols might depict political, economical and social circumstances. I agree with you as to Doré´s image… 😉
And thanks for mentioning that pic… It is a dear one to me as was taken in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in november…. I had a lovely time during that trip (beach included!)…
Sending love and wishing you happy holidays, dear Millie. ⭐
What an interesting story! Although, I’ve studied Greeks at the University, I couldn’t recall this particular legend. Your posts are always interesting, rich in content and inspiring. I wish you a splendid, gorgeous, happy and prosperous New Year and have a very merry Christmas!
Hello dear Inese! thank you very much for such encouraging words… This myth was completely new to me as well, mind… I hadn´t heard of Arachne before until I began doing some research to post a new article… In other words: I came across it quite randomly… Anyway, it was a good finding! 🙂 I truly appreciate your wishes my friend… Happy Holidays and a great 2017 to you too! 😀
Bonjour ma chère amie, un grand merci pour ton billet très intéressant sur les araignées 🙂
Je te souhaite aussi un très joyeux Noël et de belles fêtes de fin d’année avec toute mon amitié.

Thanks so much for the wishes… Merry Christmas and all the best for 2017! 😀 😘
Many years ago, I used to sing into spider webs and watch the spiders run around their webs…trying to find the source of the vibration, trying to capture my voice in vain. The spiders never found me. Of course, I wondered what would happen if they ever figured out who had been tricking and annoying them. I was a little afraid that one morning I would wake up encased in a large web, with many spiders sitting over me…planning retribution. 🙂 Reading through what you have written above, it seems that I do agree with the Vedic philosophy opinion of spiders: https://storieswithnobooks.com/2012/06/25/web-of-desire/
I love your commnet dear Mary… A total different approach concerning spiders. And your thoughts, which somehow evoke Kafka´s metamorphosis… or maybe Dore´s illustration (which I included in this post!)… I will read your post, for sure. Thanks so much for the link… Happy Holidays! 😀 🙄🤗
Merry Christmas, Aquileana ! 🙂

Running by wrapping up the holiday season. Wishing you the very best!
Waiting for sunset on Christmas Eve is like standing toes-over-the-edge on a high diving board.
Every year we’d cruise casually by the window to keep an eye on the sun’s progress until it was officially evening.
Then the shout “Christmas Eve Gift!” would ring out.
You see, the traditions says that the first person to voice that phrase on Christmas Eve to another would be graced with good fortune and joy all the next year.
(And of course, whomever was first won. Everything was a contest…)
It’s more difficult to be first now with caller ID.
As all those who have become my friends in blogland are spread widely across time zones, I’d like to wish you all “Christmas Eve Gift” now.
And as I already feel so fortunate to have such wonderful readers and writers in this neighborhood, I wish to share any phrase acquired good fortune and joy with you in thanks.
No matter where you are or what you are guided by, hope you have a very merry Christmas and a new year full of adventure and joy.
Peace on earth and goodwill towards all creatures great and small.
Thanks for such moving and Beautiful words… Blessings and wishes of peace, health, Love and best achievements to you, my friend. 🎄💛 Merry Christmas

Thank you very much dear Annette… I wish you the very best in Blogland and beyond as well!:.. have an excellent 2017 ❤
Thank you for this, Aquileana. It’s fascinating to learn the ancient mythology of the spider. I have a deep connection to spiders, although not by choice. I often see them in dreams. I’ve read that they are a writer’s totem, and that by being afraid of them means being afraid of your own power. Anytime they visit me, either in reality or during unconscious flghts, I take notice. 🕷
Thank you very much for adding those points as to spiders and their meaning in dreams dear Julie. (I don´t think I have ever dreamt of spiders).. There is something of ancestral prototype about them, so I can see why you mention they are considered writer´s totems. Very interesting! 😉 Wishing you a great 2017 ahead, with much success.. 😀 ⭐
I remember the story of Arachne from when I studied mythology in school, long ago. Thank you for tying her story into those of other cultures. I always learn something new here!
Thank you very much for your comment… I am very glad to know that you enjoyed the post, especially the myths involving spiders in other cultures given that you already knew the greek myth! 😉 wishing you an excellent New Year! ⭐
Wow, how comprehensive your mythology always is! May I know how much preparing time for this kind of enticing post? Thank you for your sustaining effort and passion in exploring these kinds of background information to us. Blessings and wishing you a wonderful New Year 2017!
Thank you very much for such nice words!… as to your question, well, it depends… I could put a post together in three days if I am lucky to easily find the information and images. But overall I´d say it takes me six or seven days to get it done. 😀 Grateful for your visit… Happy New Year! ⭐
No wonder you are already an expert in this field of mythology! Keep it up and looking forward to your next blog post!
Thank you!!… Your words mean so much to me… Sending love & best wishes! 😀 ⭐
The Greeks never learn do they? You don’t offend the gods! 😀 Of course, we have to forgive them, after all it’s pretty nigh to impossible NOT to offend them… They’re so bloody sensitive! Great post as per usual, Aquileana. 🙂
Ha!… So true… I wonder if such sensitivity and all sort of “mixed feelings” should be considered divine attributes… But, it is hard to answer from A Western hence majorly Catholic point of view, of course!.. 😉 Thank you!. Wishing you the best for 2017, dear Kev. 😀
To be fair, perhaps they should. Then again, we can’t give the gods all the credit! 😀 😉
Ha!… True that, my friend… Hugs to you! 😀
Love the pics btw… Just had a closer look at them… Love the cupid sculpture. 😊
Thank you very much dear Kev… I hope your year if off to a good start xx ✨🎇☺️
Thanks… For you also! 🙂

Wishing you a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings in the year to come.
Thanks a lot for the wishes dear Stefan… have a great 2017 ahead!. Love & peace to you! 😀
Thank you for a marvellous post, dear Aquileana! So much symbolism in many cultures represented by the modest, hardworking spinner. I like watching Arachne weaving her web in my garden. It’s true some spiders are poisonous, but many are harmless.
Wishing you a very Happy New Year and belated ( I think ) Merry Christmas! ❤ 🙂 ❤
Hello there, dear Irina… thanks so much for your feedback… very pleased to read your comment and to know that you enjoyed the post and found it interesting!:)
Wishing you a wonderful new year… with many good things and moments ahead!❤ ⭐
My pleasure. Best wishes to you, dear Aquileana. ❤ 🙂
And same to you, dear Irina… Happy 2⃣0⃣1⃣7⃣ !!!! 😀
Reblogged this on Greek Canadian Literature.
Thank you kindly for the reblog… wishing you a great 2017 ahead!!!
I guess there’s quite a few legends I’m unaware of…hadn’t heard this one. I was aware the Native Americans didn’t kill spiders, and since learning that years ago, I have not killed a spider. Don’t know why, just feels right (past life stuff?). have a happy new year, lady!!
Very interesting… I don´t like to kill insects either… and wouldn´t kill spiders either, of course… Mostly after having written this post, as it would be “so against Arachne”, a character that I would say I admire! 😀 Wishing you an excellent 2⃣0⃣1⃣7⃣ dear Badfish!… Sending love!
I don’t like the killing of anything for some reason, even plants. But I wouldn’t make a good Buddhist because I will kill a mosquito. And cockroaches. When I was a kid, I imagined feeling the Xmas tree’s pain as we screwed him into the tree stand. blessings and love to you in the new year🙏🏽
Ha… BTW, Did you know that the female mosquito is the one who bites… the males are vegans- and if the females does so is because of their future offspring, cause she requires proteins… I have tried not to kill mosquitoes since I learnt those facts… Anyway, Spiders will do so… wishing you an excellent year dear Badfish… ✨☺️
Oh no…I did not know that. And wish I did not know it now, because now I’m feeling guilty! Baby killer. Gads! Please don’t tell me anything about cockroaches, OK?
grace in the new year, Aquilieana (I like the new photo)
Haha!!!!- I wouldn´t tell you anything about cockroaches (I feel guilty as to them!)…
Thanks so much for the wishes & words; and I am hoping that 2017 will be a beautiful year to you! 😀 🙂
they eat cockroaches in Thailand
A “perfect” cycle, then!!!! 😀
Hi Aquileana, Hope you had a good year…it’s been long time. Soon catch up…
Wishing you a wonderful year ahead in 2017 and lots of joy and happiness.

Bonjour BELLE JEUNE FILLE AQUILEANA
😉 Aquileana 😀
[…] Πηγή: ►Mythology: “Arachne, The Greek Spider Woman”🕷.- […]
Great post like always!!
It is wonderful to be back after a small hiatus.
So much was learned in that period.
Hope you had a wonderful 2016 in review & may 2017 be the best.
Thank you very much, my friend… I am glad to “see” you here! 😀 Glad to know that you enjoyed the post!!!:.. happy new year, with many good things ahead! 😀 xo
All this time I have been shunning the little beasts when really they have been a window into myth and history. If only they didn’t move so funny I could possibly get to like them. Happy New Year my friend!
Haha!!!. Such strange creatures… But we should give them the credits for the weaving skills, don´t you think? 😀 wishing you a great year ahead, Ste!!! Thanks for dropping by ⭐
That is true, webs are a thing of beauty, especially when coated with Ice on a wInter’s morn.
I loved hearing about the idea from ancient India that a spider wove the universe and controls it through the strings. Spiders certainly are great creators. Hope you have a wonderful 2017!
Hello there, dear Sheila. Thanks so much for the visit and I am glad to know that you liked the post… I agree with you as to the cosmological interpretations involving spiders. I think it entails a powerful analogy!… Wishing you an excellent 2017 ahead! 😀 ⭐
Out of all the stories I’ve read on Greek Gods and Goddesses I had never heard about Arachne. As always this was a thorough and enjoyable read.
Thank you very much dear Steph… Pleased to know that you enjoyed the feature!… wishing you a great 2017! ⭐
You’re welcome. 💖 Wishing you a great 2017 as well.
Un pensiero gioioso per la tua Epifania, silvia
Tante grazie, cara Silvia … Ti auguro una bella giornata 😀 😉
Wow, I did not think it was possible to not fall in love with one of your Greek heroines: Aphrodite, Athena, the Sirens… but Arachne, 🕷, I just am not a spider person. Although I must say the character of Arachne is quite enchanting (a strong mind and strengths), but spiders simply are a bit of a weakness for me 🙂 Wonderful post Aquileana, and wishing you the best in 2017.
Hi there dear Dalo!:.. I agree with you, Arcahne is an enchanting character… the fact that he challenged Athena shows her as a self confident and brave woman!
Thank you very much for dropping by and for your words & wishes…. I hope that you have a wonderful 2017!!!! 😀
My grandma used to tell me about the Spider story of India. She used to tell that the world I am living in is small and tiny a part of a spider’s web… As she continued her story would sound other worldly and sometimes it scared me. Love the Greek and Egyptian stories. Thanks for reminding me of a time gone by. 🙂
You look beautiful in the pictures at the end.
Have a wonderful 2017. 🙂
This is such a beautiful anecdote, which endorses the indian account over here… thank you very much for sharing it!. Your comment is much appreciated … all the best to you in 2017! 😀
Bonjour BELLE JEUNE FILLE AQUILEANA
Gros bisous Bernard http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/8295715628.gif

ti ringrazio, cara Silvia.—- ti auguro una buona giornata e prosecuzione della settimana! 😀 Un abbraccio!
Now, that was fascinating! Although not a big fan of spiders, I do love the intricacy, delicacy and artwork of many of the beautiful webs I’ve seen! Happy New Year, my friend!
Yes!… I feel exactly the same way… (maybe a sort of “admiration”towards spiders !!!). Thanks so much for the visit & comment, dear Linda… It is great to “see” you! 😀 All the best to you in 2017, my friend! 😉

Love this blog! I’m especially fond of Greek mythology as I am half Greek. You have quite a command of mythos in general. Joseph Campbell would be proud! Also, I see we share an icon in the use of Athena. May she serve you well. :0)
Thank you very much for your words. Coming from a ‘half greek’ & ‘author’ they mean a lot! 😊 And good that you noticed that Athena is in my icon. My blogger identity is a sort for hybrid, coming from the union of Achilles And Athena, I’d say (~name: Aquileana + Avatar: Athena). Wishing you the best! 💛
Oh, thanks I was going to ask you that. Also love the drawing. Is it yours?
No, it is not mine… I found it as Creative Commons, long time ago. It seems a University in Mexico started using the same one after me! O_O (in 2013)
I wouldn´t have knwon of this if not because of your question. I might think of changing (at least) something in the avatar, so thank you for your question!.
Sending best wishes, 😀
