►Mythology / Philosophy:
“The Lost City of Atlantis”, according to Plato’s dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias”:
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
Plato’s two dialogues pertaining to Atlantis are “Timaeus” and “Critias”, written in 360 BC. These are the earliest known written records about the Lost Continent of Atlantis, all other written references to Atlantis have been written since, and have been based on these writings by Plato.
“Timaeus” and “Critias” are actually written in the form of dialogues between four main characters: Socrates (Greek philosopher, and Plato’s teacher), Critias (poet & historian), Timaeus (an Italian astronomer.), and Hermocrates (a general from Syracuse). All were real people.
The dialogue “Timaeus” includes only a passing reference to Atlantis, but the second writing, the Critias, has a much more in depth description of Atlantis leading upto it’s downfall.
The fabled island-continent derives its name from the Titan Atlas. It was said to be out beyond the western headland where the immortal giant holds up the heavens by means of a pillar on his back.
•The Atlantis, as described by Plato:
Plato told the story of Atlantis around 360 B.C.
According to Plato, Atlantis was the domain of Poseidon, god of the sea. When Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman, Cleito, he created a dwelling at the top of a hill near the middle of the island and surrounded the dwelling with rings of water and land to protect her.
Cleito gave birth to five sets of twin boys who became the first rulers of Atlantis. The island was divided among the brothers with the eldest, Atlas, first King of Atlantis, being given control over the central hill and surrounding areas.
At the top of the central hill, a temple was built to honor Poseidon which housed a giant gold statue of Poseidon riding a chariot pulled by winged horses. It was here that the rulers of Atlantis would come to discuss laws, pass judgments, and pay tribute to Poseidon.
The founders of Atlantis, he said, were half god and half human. They created a utopian civilization and became a great naval power. Their home was made up of concentric islands separated by wide moats and linked by a canal that penetrated to the center. The lush islands contained gold, silver, and other precious metals and supported an abundance of rare, exotic wildlife. There was a great capital city on the central island.
For generations the Atlanteans lived simple, virtuous lives. But slowly they began to change. Greed and power began to corrupt them. When Zeus saw the immorality of the Atlanteans he gathered the other gods to determine a suitable punishment and destroy them.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
•Destruction of the Atlantis:
The most popular theories as to the destruction of Atlantis are exactly what Plato described, earthquakes and floods. The floods more than likely attributable to the tidal waves that would have been caused by the earthquakes.
Another theory is that there was a volcano on the island that errupted with such force that the island was buried in molten lava.
For Plato, Atlantis was an island, supposedly the size of Libya and Asia Minor combined, located in the Atlantic beyond Gibraltar and due to its central position a stepping stone by which travelers could reach other islands and the opposing land mass.
•Where was the city of Atlantis placed?:
There are many theories about where Atlantis was—in the Mediterranean: Thera, Chales Pellegrino and Walter Friedrich, Cyprus (Robert Sarmast ), Central or South America (Ivar Zapp and George Erikson ) even under what is now Antarctica (Colin Wilson). [Note: You can check out ten possible locations here].
Many believe that Plato was basing his account of Atlantis on the history of the Minoan civilization, which would coincide well with these new dates. The history of the Minoan civilization and the description of Atlantis have a suspicious amount in common at any rate.
Ballard says, the legend of Atlantis is a “logical” one since cataclysmic floods and volcanic explosions have happened throughout history, including one event that had some similarities to the story of the destruction of Atlantis. About 3,600 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption devastated the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea near Greece. At the time, a highly advanced society of Minoans lived on Santorini. The Minoan civilization disappeared suddenly at about the same time as the volcanic eruption.

Fantastic post dear Amalia.
You know I’ve been collecting in a secret facebook group all kind of informations about this myth! For some reason I get obsessed to know more about it.
I read about the Minoan civilization and I have a couple of videos posted in my group about it.
Thanks you so much for sharing with us.
Kisses and hugs.
Thanks for telling me about your interests, dear Rotze… I found that it is great that we are both caught by the idea of a lost city underseas…
I tend to believe it is more a myth than something based on real facts.
Despite it, the mere idea of its existence is mesmerizing and captivating, isn’t it ?
I will add the link to your facebook group on the Atlantis here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/150603668405958/ I don’t have a FB account though!. But maybe someone reads the comments here wants to join you over there, after sending you a request, of course!.

I find the mythology of the Greeks really amazing. I will read these two dialogues when I get time.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for stopping by to read and comment…
I also find that Greek Mythology is wonderful and, at the same time, huge source of knowledge and misteries… As to the excerpts on the Atlantis, they are mainly descriptive and not so long!.
Best wishes, Makagutu. Hope you have a nice friday and weekend ahead, Aquileana 😛
Regardless of such great Greek characters in play. I think that they still did not have an exact idea of the physical world. They might have assume many of the locations or distances were merely hypothetic.
I personally have my doubts about the Atlantis. I’m sorry!
Great post Aquileana! 🙂 ❤
Hi HJ,
I agree with you and think it is above all a myth (hence an hypothesis, without correlated empirical facts to prove its validity)
Thank you for stopping by to read and share you thoughts here…
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Excellent post and thank you for the nomination Aquileana! 🙂
Hi Ana,
I am truly glad to know that you liked the post. You are welcome for the nomination. The pleasure was all mine!.

Fantastic post! I enjoyed reading it. 🙂
Hi Carol,
Thank you very much for taking time to read and comment here…
I am really glad to know that you enjoyed the reading!.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Abrazos grandes, Aquileana 😀
PD: Un gusto nominarte 😛
Mi querida A. (¡Viernes, a ti llegamos!):
Muchos besos 🙂
Great presentation as usual… love the seafaring ideology for defence. Very clever. One can tell it was an age before flying was ever dreamed of. 🙂
Very witty comment, dear Kev… my objection is that that “seafaring ideology” can’t explain the hypothesis of the Atlantis emplacement in South America. I mean how Plato would have been able to describe it in depth if it was the case… (!).
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Quite true my dear Aquileana. I stand corrected. 😉
Ps: Thanks for your wonderful award nomination Aquileana! Loved the video too. 🙂
The pleasure is mine… You really deserve it, Kev.
Hugs and happy friday and weekend ahead to you and yours,

Thanks Aquileana… likewise to you. 🙂

You’r most welcome my dear friend! 🙂
This is a fantastic post, Aquileana! I think most of us have heard of Atlantis, but I was fascinated by your in-depth discussion of its origins and downfall. I know there are hardcore believers that Atlantis did exist at one time, and who knows? So much of our ocean is still unexplored. There just might be a lost continent down there.
Hello Miranda,
I also learnt new facts about Atlantis as I wrote this post!.
It is captivating, isn’t it…
You are right as to misteries underseas (and also above, in the sky)… Although I think that Plato’s detailed descriptions of the lost city tend to encourage the possibility of its existence more than factual evidence do.
Anyway… As you said: “Who knows?”…
Thanks for dropping by. I hope you have a nice friday and weekend ahead,
Aquileana 😀
What a marvellous post! Thank you, Aquileana.
I didn’t know much about Atlantis, except that it had disappeared and that it hasn’t been proved that it ever existed. And I always thought of it as having been in the Mediterranean, but now I read about all those other places all over the world where it might have been!
Plato might have been a fiction writer too! 😉
Cheers 🙂 Irina
Hello dear Irina,
“Plato as a fiction writer” and even more “Science Fiction writer”.
The excerpts on Plato’s dialogues related to the Atlantis are thoroughly descriptive.
I wondered how the Atlantis could have been placed in America as communications with the “New Continent” don’t even exist by then.
There are certainly gaps and fallacies around this topic, I guess.
Thanks for dropping by to read and comment.
Best wishes and hugs,
Aquileana 😀
“Science Fiction Writer”, yes!
Indeed… That was quite eloquent, dear Irina.Wink 🙂
Happy weekend, Aquileana 😛
Thanks @kookadim for sharing this post at Twitter and at Google Plus,

My pleasure 🙂
Aquileana, once again you take me back to my days reading Greek in school and college and i love being taken there. Thank you.
Thank you dear John… I much appreciate your support and I am glad to know that you enjoy these myths as much as I do.
All the very best to you, Aquileana 😛

You are the Wonder Woman, Amalia! There must be 9 of you!
I thank you kindly for the mention! Pardon me, please,
from doing the award thingy. Peace and luvz to you from Lord Atl! 😉
P.S. I’ve heard that Atlantis was another Earth-type planet,
and at least one of their inhabitants came to visit us, and told stories…
I am laughing out loud at your hilarious and witty comment.
Woot Wonder Woman! 🙂
Thanks for brighten up my early night, Keith.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
Go have a good one, gorgeous! But you might want to leave the suit behind tonight. 😉 The men will be seeing stars anyway, once you arrive.
Awww. Thank you Keith 😀
Your comment reminded me of Coldplay’s song “Yellow”…
♪♫♪♫♫Look at the stars, Look how they shine for you, And everything you do, Yeah, they were all yellow♪♫♪♫♫
Best wishes. Enjoy your night!,
Aquilean 🙂
Hello my galpal! Learning about Atlantis is wonderful as I have heard stories about it but didn’t quite know so much… until now! Perhaps I followed the bright stars on the side menu of your blog here? 🙂 And then I get to Atlantis that way? hehe
I think the islands sounded wonderful, full of silver and gold, and pretty to look at. Ah but they were destroyed. And lots of possible locations too!
Thanks for the information, links and great photos in your post. Also, waving hello to you in your end photo too ((hugs))
xo

Un beso Grande.
Muy acertada la interpretación, Rubén.
Parece paradójico, pero es, efectivamente así.
Beso grande, Aquileana 😛
Hola – qué tal? I keep comign across these stories of “gemelos” – don’t know what that’s about. And Poseidon? I *always* pronounce that como si fuera otra palabra. Ah, pues.

Aquileana 😀

We all love a mystery and Atlantis is one of the biggest ones in human history, the trouble is we will never now the real answers to this mystery,xx Rachel
Your right, an age old mystery which most of us love and are fascinated with. I don’t know if we will ever get to the bottom of it though.
Cheers Rachel and regards, James x
I don’t think we would be able to get to the bottom of it either, dear James… Simply because it is more a myth tha a real fact.
Best regards, Aquileana 😛
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for sharing your insights here… I agree with you as regard to this lost ancient city.
I tend to believe that its possible existence is clearly more based on myth and our own ensuing expectations than on real facts.
Although, I find that Plato’s retelling is smashing and eloquent.
Best wishes and happy weekend ahead to you,
Aquileana 😛

I’ve always believed that Plato was referring to the Minoans — although the ‘Pillars of Hercules’ thing really confuses me in that regard. Kudos- great post!
Hi Chris.
That one is one of the most accurate hyphotesis. I agree with you. Although we might find objections as well.

Thanks for another interesting post! I’m going to bookmark this to check out the links “con calma” … Of course I’ve heard and read a lot of moder speculation about Atlantis, but I’d never really looked into what Plato had to say on the subject, which made this doubly interesting to me. While I have been taught that Atlantis was a fictional island, I have often wondered why the legend continues to intrigue us to this very day. Perhaps, it was real after all…
Hello Clanmother,
Thanks a lot for taking time to read and comment here.
I agree with you… we now tend to read its story as a legend or myth. But it might have been real. Some experts have said that the Lost City was probably related to the Minoan Civilization, who vanished die to a natural disaster (could have been a tsunami).

[…] ►Mythology / Philosophy: “The Lost City of Atlantis”, according to Plato’s dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias”: _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Plato’s two dialogues pertaining to… […]
I love the drawings and the topographical maps. What I like about what I read in an article was how the term “utopia” came about:
“A utopia /juːˈtoʊpiə/ is a community or society possessing highly desirable or near perfect qualities. The word was coined by Sir Thomas More in Latin for his 1516 book “Utopia”, describing a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and imagined societies portrayed in fiction. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopia
“The term “utopia” (from “no place”) was coined by Sir Thomas More in Utopia, his 16th Century work of fiction. Inspired by Plato’s Atlantis and travelers’ accounts of the Americas, More described an imaginary land set in the New World. His idealistic vision established a connection between the Americas and utopian societies, a theme which was further solidified by Sir Francis Bacon in The New Atlantis (c. 1623)”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis
Nevertheless, when you say that the Lost City was probably related to the Minoan Civilization, which vanished due to a natural disaster, it seems to be a more logical speculation. Of course, a myth, but one that nurtures my imagination. Thanks for the drawings and wonderful post!
Hi dear María,
Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment here…
I agree with you as regard to the accurate possibility of linking the City underseas with the lost Minoan civilization. One thing for me is sure. If it has existed (which I doubt) it should have been placed in Europe, not in America . By the way, that is such an odd hyphotesis (Check out this link as regard to it: ”La Atlántida Boliviana” http://www.atlantisbolivia.org/ )
The quotes related with Utopia are marvelous. Thanks for adding them here.
Best wishes and happy sunday to you, Aquileana 😀
Yes, I agree, and have learned a lot from this post I didn’t know. I also learned the “utopian” connotations that other civilisations also had. Yet, as you say: “When Zeus saw the immorality of the Atlanteans he gathered the other gods to determine a suitable punishment and destroy them.” So even “utopian” societies had their doomsday also!
You are right, honey…
Someone here mentioned the similarities between Atlantis and our nowadays’ society downfall…
Jeff (a fellow blogger) sent me this link which I recommend you to check out…
It links to a post based on Umberto Eco’s “Book of Legendary Lands”.

I very much enjoyed this history of Atlantis…always a curiosity of mine. Thanks!
What a pleasure to have your visit here.
Thank you very much, dear Jane.
I much appreciate your words.
All my best wishes to you,
Aquileana 😀
Thanks for the information!
What a casuality!
I’ve just received a video about atlantis and his religion (:-D
I’m afraid, there are some mistakes in the video program. However I think they are interesting subjects for researching ;).
Hi Isar,
It is great that you added this video here. 🙂
I will definitely watch it later today.
Thanks for sending it my way and for taking time to read and comment.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
Don’t worry for the video.
It was posted on impulsive mode (or dionysian mode if you prefer:).
As I said, there are some mistakes and inconsistencies.
Probably there are a lot of videos about Atlantis more relevant than this one.
Best wises
Thanks, Isar…
I am sure it will be a good one… As it is a “myth” I think that mistakes and/ or inconsistencies are unavoidable.
Enjoy the rest of your sunday and have a nice week ahead,
Aquileana 😛
Well, in that case, enjoy it. ( 🙂 )
All of us make mistakes.
I think is good for being alert.

Hi Aquileana. A great post on a fascinating subject. I’m going to recommend a book to you based on this post: “The Book of Legendary Lands” by Umberto Eco. It’s a little pricey, so look online for a used copy. Here is a link to my post on this book. Cheers! – Jeff

Well explained interesting article, Aquileana. The moral is that greed and power can cause one’s downfall! A lot of similarities in today’s world too. Thought provoking … Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely week. 🙂
Hello Iris,
Great to know that you liked this posts and found it interesting.
The similarities with our world nowadays as regard to downfall are accurate. Well pointed.
Hugs and happy sunday to you, Aquileana 😀
Thanks, it’s my pleasure, Aquileana. Hugs and smiles. Have a lovely day too. Iris. 🙂
Since I was a little boy, I was fascinated by the story -¿or the myth?- of the lost city of Atlantis. Thank you very much for this time of remembrance…
You are welcome… It is an amazing and captivating myth, isn’t it?. I am glad that It caught your interest.
Happy sunday and week ahead Chestersoc.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀

Since the term Atlantis got into my world(at age 13), I was fascinated to know about it but wouldn’t get much of it as time start passing. It is fascinating to read about it in terms of Plato. Discovered many mysteries that I was wishing and a lot more.
I loved the way you uncovered the mystery! Fantastic piece to read. 🙂
Cheers!
Swetank, (from Being Bettr)
hello Swetank.
Thank you very much for dropping by to read and comment.
I am really glad to know that you enjoyed the post and that this myth of the lost city underseas caught your attention.
Best wishes and happy week ahead to you,
Aquileana 😛
I enjoyed this post, including the video, as a means to remember forgotten data about the lost land of Atlantis. The presence of a high civilization in the middle of the Mediterranean would explain the emergence of all those developed cultures in the surroundings, all of them related one to the other in some degree.
If the ancient island of Thera corresponds to the current Santorini, I would vote for placing there the remains of the mythological place. The beauty of Santorini is almost unbereable, like that of Florence or perhaps even more.
Un abrazo, querida Amalia Aquileana
Lino
Lino,
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, dear Lino. I muh appreciate your visit.
I have never been in Santorini, but heard of its beauty.
I tend to believe that Atlantis might have been Thera, without any doubt . I found this last hypohtesis with regard to the emplacement quite accurate and strong.
Best wishes to you, always,Aquileana 😛
Fascinating and obviously very popular post!
Thank you Sue. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀

The idea of Atlantis always appealed to me when I was a kid. I used to like to pretend I was swimming around underwater all the time for a good few weeks. I’m almost positive my fascination was inspired by a cartoon. Maybe there was a Bugs Bunny short on this at some point… memory escapes me.
Hello Jeri.
The idea of a lost city underseas also mesmerized me (still does)…
I am glad that this post brought you back to those swimming times when you were a kid…
May you had read “The Little Mermaid”, By Hans Christian Anderson or a similar story by that time… http://hca.gilead.org.il/li_merma.html
Thanks a lot for dropping by, JBW/
Best wishes, xo,
Aquileana 😀

I first read about the myth of Atlantis when I was in my teens, a book by Charles Berlitz and from then on it was the start for my love of Greek Mythology. I’ve read and re-read both dialogues and still find it fascinating. Hence the name of my blog ;D and the series I am writing.
Thank you for a wonderful post cara Aquileana.
ciao
Luciana 😀
Ciao Cara Luciana.
I knew you would like this one and of course I thought of you and your blog Eternal Atlantis.
I also find Plato’s version of The Altantis particularly detailed and somehow “utopic”… Particularly the excerpts with regard to it which appear in “The Timaeus.
Thank you very much for dropping by to read and comments, cara amica.
Abraccio, Aquileana 😀
Thanks @ClucianaLuciana for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 🙂
I have been itching to have time to read this in full, and digest its contents.. So much has been written about Atlantis and I was very interested in this post Aquileana.. You always find out the most interesting facts..
i was so very interested in seeing raised here the mention of Giants!.. and half mortal… I was also transfixed with the images you used to.
I have read many theories upon the demise of Atlantis.. that they got too powerful, and that many misused the Crystal power that was then used which destroyed the city… ( I suppose like a huge atom bomb) … What ever is the real story we are all fascinated by the Myth of it.. And remains of a great city have been found on the ocean bed..
I loved reading your post Aquileana… you always manage to pour so much information and yet make it so easy for the reader to understand. I am in awe of your ability to convey History this way.. History was a subject I always enjoyed and was one of the few subjects I came top in at school.. 🙂 😀
Many thanks Sue xox
Hello Sue.
Thanks for your thoughtful and clever comment here…
I am also mesmerized by this myth and the way Plato has described this lost City in such a detailed way. I think that this might be an explanation of why still nowadays scientists believe that it really existed and most of them conclude it might be placed in ancient Thera (Santorini nowadays).
I also believe that it is the mere possibility of its existence which encourages the idea of its factical, real existence.
In other words, it is an utopia.
As Eduardo Galeano (Uruguayan writer) says:
“Utopia lies at the horizon.
When I draw nearer by two steps,
it retreats two steps.
If I proceed ten steps forward, it
swiftly slips ten steps ahead.
No matter how far I go, I can never reach it.
What, then, is the purpose of utopia?
It is to cause us to advance.”
Best wishes dear Sue. Hugs to you,
Aquileana 😛
Congratulations on your awards, Aquileana…
Thank you very much dear Leyla. Sending hugs to you,
Aquileana 😀

Well researched and written – I never knew Atlantis was supposed to have concentric circles! One of my favourite games is Bioshock, where the city Rapture is located under the sea.
Thank you very mcuh… I didn’t know that Atlantis was supposed to have concentric circles until I wrote this post.
I am glad that you found this post interesting.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀

This is an interesting blog entry about a very sophisticated topic. Even scholars differ on it. If you want to know more about academic approaches towards Atlantis as a real place please visit http://www.atlantis-scout.de/
It is simply not true that “all” academics consider Atlantis to be an invention.
Thank you very much for the link and I will check it out…
Best regards, Aquileana 😀
You and I are from countries that would have bordered Atlantis. I don’t know about Argentina, but the legend was very much alive when I was growing up. I distinctly remember looking at the ocean and imagining it when I was little (I had a brilliant imagination!). Thank you for this reminiscence Aquileana and in particular, the extensive graphics.
Hi Mike,
There are too many possible locations of Atlantis and Australia might be one as well… However I believe there are just hypothesis, probably without correlated empirical facts to prove their validity… Anyways, It is also nice to keep on believing in it !.
Thank you very much for your wonderful comments.
Best wishes to you, Aquileana 😀

I like history because its my job 🙂 I enjoy reading about the of political, social and military changes being wrought, and the dramatic transformations that major wars, revolutions and political movements and campaigns bring about.I like reading about events told chronologically so that I can get a real feel for the process of how things change from one state into another. And modern history interests me most of all …ahh Thank you for sharing with us 🙂

Yet another candidate for Atlantis is Troy, as expounded in a book I’ve reviewed: http://wp.me/s2oNj1-atlantis
Not sure I’m entirely convinced, but it seems just as, if not more, plausible than other serious contenders such as Thera / Santorini!
Hi Calmgrove, thank you very much for sharing this ready-witted information.
