►Greek Mythology: “The Charites” (“The Three Graces”):

Fresco from Pompeii, House of Titus Dentatus Panthera, ca 65 -79 AD; Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli – Three Graces
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Charites (Three Graces) were reputed to be the essence of beauty, charm, and grace and were associated with the Nine Muses, who presided and inspired arts and sciences.
The Charites were three goddesses, who were sisters between them: Aglaia (Αγλαια Brightness), Euphrosyne (Ευφροσυνη Joyfulness), and Thalia (Θαλια Bloom).
The character and nature of the Charites are sufficiently expressed by the names they bear: they were conceived as the goddesses who gave festive joy and enhanced the enjoyments of life
Pindar, Olympian Ode 14: “Kharites (Charites, Graces) three . . . Euphrosyne, lover of song, and Aglaia (Aglaea) revered, daughters of Zeus the all-highest . . . with Thalia, darling of harmony.”
They are said to be daughters of Zeus and Hera (or Eurynome, daughter of Oceanus) or of Helios and Aegle, a daughter of Zeus.
The Charites were also joined in the banquets, celebrations by the Horae who were the keepers of the gates to Mount Olympus.
Aglaia was the charis goddess of beauty, adornment, splendor and glory. Aglaia was a the wife of the god Hephaistos and like her she represented the creation of objects of beauty and artistic adornment.
Homer, Iliad 18. 382: “Kharis (Charis) of the shining veil . . . the lovely goddess the renowned strong-armed one [Hephaistos] had married.”
Euphrosyne was the charis goddess of good cheer, joy, mirth and merriment
Thalia was the charis goddess of festive celebrations and rich and luxurious banquets.
Frequently the Graces were taken as goddesses of charm or beauty in general and hence were associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love; Peitho, her attendant; and Hermes, a fertility and messenger god.
As attendants of Aphrodite they were goddesses of personal beauty and the adornments which enhanced this: makeup, oils, perfumes, fine clothing and jewellery.
Homeric Hymn 5 to Aphrodite: “She [Aphrodite] went to Kypros (Cyprus), to Paphos, wher her precinct is and fragrant altar, and passed into her sweet-smelling temple. There she went in and put to the glittering doors, and there the Kharites (Charites, Graces) bathed her with heavenly oil such as blooms upon the bodies of the eternal gods–oil divinely sweet, which she had by her, filled with fragrance.”
Sometimes they were depicted as companions of Apollo and the Muses:
Hesiod, Theogony 53: “There [on Olympos] are their [the Muses’] bright dancing-places and beautiful homes, and beside them the Kharites (Charites, Graces) . . . live in delight.”
The Charitesia were annual competitions and games in honor of the Graces. There were athletic competitions, literary, musical and dramatic contests (which took place in the theater). The Charitesia festival was held at Orchomenos near the modern town of Kalpaki.

Lovely post, Aquileana. I am much more informed about your new topic” this time, as I had to study when I attended the high school, ” The three Charites” , in Italian ” Le Tre Grazie”, which was a beautiful, neo-classical poem by Ugo Foscolo and I loved it. Thank you for refreshing my memory with this. Cheers. Stefy 🙂

Salut Georges!.
Bisous. Aquileana 😀
Concise. Loved it. I like being able to read something quick that gets right to the heart of the subject. Well done, Aquileana!
Thanks a lot for your words dear Jeff…
I try to make it brief.. Otherwise the post might become boring…
Short and to the point… 🙂
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Same here. I generally aim for between 500 to 1000 words, although I’ll go a little longer if the topic warrants. There is an art to paring down unnecessary stuff in writing. My years as a technical writer and editor have helped me in this area 😉
Felicitaciones por los premios 🙂
Muchas gracias, Chus. Un abrazo para vos, Aquileana 😀
Another excellent post. I was reading a little of Joseph Campbell lately and came upon this quote – the first person I thought about was you! “Myth is much more important and true than history. History is just journalism and you know how reliable that is.” Have a great day. Hugs coming your way…. 🙂
Hi dear Rebecca… What a great quote… Regardless I would rather say that Historic facts and Myths work well together.. It is not up to “us” to decide upon one or the other.
There are myths involved even in History, that’s a fact and in that sense I agree with the greta Joseph Campbell
Thanks for sharing your insights. Sending hugs, Aquileana 😀
Hugs received and so very appreciated. 🙂
Another enlightening post! Great work as always Aquileana!
Thank you very much dear Ryan!
Sending you all my best wishes…

The “Three Graces” was the very first name from Mythology I learned when I was a small child for the reason that my Aunt (My Mom’s sister) had a small sculpture with the Three Graces and she loved sculptures. I remember asking who are those naked ladies? Thank you for having brought this pleasant memory from my past. Aquileana, my very best for you sweetie! 🙂
Thanks dear Hj for your beautiful comment… Great to know that you liked the post and that this myth brought you memories back… By the way your question to your aunt was really cute!. All the best to you. happy weekend.
Aquileana 😀
Hi Aqui,
Aha, the Three Graces is the hidden concept you would not reveal to me before! NOW I get it… and a day earlier than usual??!!! Is it it the weekend?!! SEE you are not knowing the day either, wink, wink, 🙂
It’s another lovely post and I think they are so interesting goddesses to learn about! Also, the hamsters photo you created in response to Shehanne’s post is hilarious! Please!.
Love and happy weekend ahead!, Aquileana 😀
Thanks @ShehanneMoore for sharing this post at Twitter,

The Three Graces are especially fascinating to me. I love that they were attendants (handmaidens?) to Aphrodite. As a designer, I have spent my career beautifying others, and I appreciate that Greek Mythology has Goddesses in that vain.
Thank you for your continuing writing on Greek Mythology. Your posts should be a book one day. _Resa
Hi dear Resa!… I am very happy to know that you enjoyed this post… I much appreciate that you shared your insights regarding it over here. And, as to the “book”… your words truly honor me…

Mi querida A.
(¿Bastante bien, no?
Aquileana 😀
Thanks @VBoletta for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😛
Me halaga y motiva querida Geiko. Un abrazo. Que tengas un excelente fin de semana. Aquileana 😀
So many festivals, so little time 😉
That’s life!. That’s what people say…
Best wishes, Jeri, Aquileana 😀
Thanks @JeriWB for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😀
Well, it’s nice to know that a few mythological figures managed to stay out of trouble! Sounds like the three Graces were content to promote harmony and peace among the more volatile mythological characters. (I wonder if Aglaia was able to sooth Hephaistos’s wounded pride after Aphrodite was unfaithful to him.) Once again, you’ve outdone yourself with another excellent post, Aquileana! I very much enjoyed it. I hope you have a great weekend, my friend!
Hi dear Miranda.
Thanks a lot for your words and I am truly glad to know that you enjoyed this post!… You made a good point regarding Aglaia, Aphrodite and Hephaistos… If Aglaia was already married to him, then both (Hephaistos and Aphrodite) were unfaithful to their respective spouses (Aglaia and Ares, respectively)… I would have to dig into it soon to see how facts developed here!.Sending you all my best wishes andI hope you have a great weekend, my writer friend, Aquileana 😛
nice work Aquileana & congrats on the award ❤
Thanks a lot dear Leyla!. I am wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Aquileana 😀
I found this post very interesting and learned things I did not know. I guess as far as gods and goddesses, being one of the Graces was a good job!
Thanks a lot for dropping by dear Donna… I am really pleased to know that you learnt things as you read this post (Learnt is my british version of learned… Both are correct!). All the very best to you!, Aquileana 😛
Hi Aquileana,
This post is as charming as the Three Graces. They inspired so many artists. I love the slideshow. My favourites are by Botticelli, Raphael, the mosaic in Pompeii and the sculpture by Canova.
Congratulations on the well-deserved award!
Have a lovely weekend!! Hugs ❤ Irina
I forgot to mention the fresco from Pompeii. That’s the one I like best of all.
It is my favourite too, but mainly because it is the “first one”, temporarily speaking. Hugs, dear Irina, Aquileana 😀
Thanks for sharing your thoughts regarding the post and particularly as to the paintings… Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’ is one of my favourites paintings ever so I agree with you in that one. Canova’s sculpture is a famous one and I love it too!. All my best wishes and happy weekend to you, dear Irina!,
Aquileana 🙂
By the way: I love that you as an aussie say favourite instead of favorite, which would be the american version… Love!, Aquileana 😀
Aussie spelling follows the spelling of the mother country. They never felt the need to rebel against England as the Americans did! Hugs 🙂 Irina
I know there’s more to them, but I can’t help but smile that they are the “goddesses of makeup, perfume, clothing, and jewelry”. Even the superficial is divine. 💄 Have a fantastic weekend, Aquileana.
Remarkably said, Julie… You never cese to amaze me …
Their nicknames were Carolina Herrera, CK one and Kenzo!.
Best wishes and happy weekend to you!, Aquileana 😀

The Three Ages of Man and The Three Graces (1510)
Aquileana, I was interested in mentioning the painter Hans Baldung Grün (c. 1484 – September 1545), who was a German artist and was considered the most gifted student of Albrecht Dürer. He falls under the category of Mannerism, which occurs after the Renaissance. He was responsible for introducing supernatural and erotic themes into German art. His most characteristic paintings are fairly small in scale; a series of puzzling, often erotic allegories and mythological works. The number of Hans Baldung’s religious works diminished with the Protestant Reformation’s discouragement of idolatry. The artist became interested in themes related to death, the supernatural, witchcraft and sorcery. That Mankind’s mortality became a subject for Baldung was not unusual. Baldung’s fascination with witchcraft lasted well into the end of his career. He was considered the “Correggio of the North”.
Thank you very much for the paintings and information regarding Hans Baldung Grün… Great finding… Much appreciate it!.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
A splendid post, Aquileana. The three goddesses of Charites have admirable qualities: beauty, charm and grace. Beautiful personalities. From a global perspective, you have researched and communicated well and consequently, Greek mythology is more interesting and enjoyable. Wishing you a wonderful weekend. 🙂 Love, Iris 🙂
Thanks for your marvelous comment dear Iris. You have just put a smile on my face… I am really glad to know that you liked the post and appreciate a lot your support.
Best wishes and happy weekend to you, Aquileana 😛
NOTE! In your poem Lyrics of Praise you should delete one of the comments. I wrote it twice because I missed a word in the first one … In a sort “of”… Please, fix it, just deleting the 1st one.
Love, Aquileana 😀
Done, Aquileana. 🙂
Thank you very much dear Iris ❤
Aquileana 😀

This has been an educational post for me. I did not know of them. I wonder how many gods and goddesses there were, in total.
Have a good weekend, Aquileana. 🙂
Hi Lignum!. Thank you very much for dropping by!. I am really pleased that you liked the post… As to the number, I would say thet were three graces, and lots of Gods and Goddess surrounding them 🙂
All the best to you Aquileana 😀
poor kharis having to marry Hephaistos!!! But I love the three graces and their names. !! A beautiful post Aquileana.
True that, Hephaistos was a quite dark God, related to fire, metalworking, stonemasonry… Mostly a gross God!…
I am glad that you enjoyed this post about the Three Graces.
Best wishes and happy weekend ahead to you, dear Cybele ⭐
Aquileana 😀
How interesting to learn this about the three Graces. I never knew any of this, either, though I always stop and look at the statues of the three Graces whenever I see them.

Happy weekend, Aquileana 😀
More education of a Dreamwalker Aquileana.. 🙂 and while I had heard of the 3 graces I did not know all of that info you have so kindly provided..
I was interested too how they were also named ‘ The Charites.’ Could this be the source of our use of the Term Charities? a Charitable act.. Charity? .. I looked up the word in in Greek Charity means Love.. I hope I got that right??.. So it would make sense..
Loved the paintings Muriel and statues.. I think the statues are my favourite simply because I see the skill in the sculptor who has studied anatomy and got stone to look smooth as skin.. 🙂 I often ponder on how long it would take to create a piece of art like this.. And where one would start to chisel out those first shapes..
Many thanks for your ever educational posts, I love my time spent here my friend.. 🙂
Hugs Sue
Hi dear Sue… I think as you do… They might be a common link between these Greek Goddesses abd the word Charities (from “Charity”)… Latin and Greek were the main languages of the ones we use nowadays (at least english, spanish and french may have words with latin roots and these latest ones and Ancient Greek might also have connections… So overall… I am pretty sure that the words are related one to the other!…
As to the sculptures and paintings, glad to know that you liked them. I am now thinking backwards too and you are right, it would have taken too long to create a piece such as those ones.Sending you love and hugs, my friend.
Happy weekend to you, Aquileana 😀

I finally understand where women’s love of cosmetics comes from and will pay greater attention to such matters in future Aquileana. Congratulations on ANOTHER award (your virtual shelf is going to break under the weight of them). What I now need to know is the link, if any, between the ‘The Charities’ and our concept of altruism?
I could also understood the connection between women and our love for cosmetics… It all had an ancient origin, right?…
I owe you the explanation regarding the Charites and our concept of altruism.
I have just searched “Charites” and Wikipedia says> “”Charis” redirects here. It is not to be confused with Charities”… So I guess there is no strict etymological link between Charites (Graces) and Charities (From Charity, i.e altruism).
Thanks a lot fro dropping by. Best wishes to you, Aquileana 😀
I’m so sorry for putting you to the trouble of research Aqui, it was very presumptuous of me to think the two were linked 😦
No problems… On the contrary, I like to search stuff and I also thought that they were linked, Mike!.
Love, Aquileana 😀
If only I had Three Graces taking care of me. 😉
One would be well enough for me… 🙂
Thanks Frank for dropping by!. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀

So, before the intimidating Fates, we meet the fragrant Graces in “their bright dancing-places” – that’s a lovely phrase, isn’t it 🙂 And they do seem like very charming women indeed, although… surely someone in ancient Greece could have explained to them the concept of wearing some pants occasionally?! Seriously, on average in the paintings of the Graces there are 3.7 buttocks being flashed! That’s quite a lot 😉
Thanks for another enlightening post, dear Aquileana!
P.s. I hope the hamster isn’t feeling so sadly crushed any more…
Before the Fates come the Graces, indeed, dear Sue.
Your insights regarding the “occasional pants” made me laugh out loud! 🙂
As to the hamsters we are in perfect terms right now…
Thank you very much for dropping. I truly appreciate your feedback.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Thanks @Blakefeline for sharing this post at Twitter, Aquileana 😀
Well, I’m glad it made you chuckle, dear Aquileana. And relieved about the hamsters 😉
No doubt the three graces must have been related to Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Congrats on all your nominations dear Aq, more than well-deserved! Oh, and that picture of you is so cute with Shehanne’s hamsta chat! 🙂 ❤
Hi D.G!.
Thank you very much for dropping by… You are right the Charites were related to Aphrodite and it seems they share the same banal interests… Oh those Beautiful Greek Goddess!. And I am glad that you liked the award’s images… Shehanne was the active agent here 🙂 All the best to you. Hugs, Aquileana 😀
Always my pleasure to visit your place Aq. ❤
Thanks @pokercubster for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😀
Aquileana 😀
Aquileana, congratulations on your awards, always well deserved! I love the entire premise of the “Three Graces”, with three being such an important number, as in the trinity, represented here as the essence of beauty, charm, and grace. Ha-ha, I must stop here, as I find I have written an unintentional independent essay (not included) on the transformation of polytheism to monotheism in society, all based on the idea of “The Graces”. Your posts of course are always wonderful, inspiring me to look further into the topics which you share. The side show, beautiful with my two favorites, “The Three Graces” by Picasso (1925), and “Primavera” by Sandro Botticelli (1482), which includes the “Three Graces”. How can you not love, love, love Botticelli? Well, you know I’m an art nut! Thank you again for sharing a lovely post. Please take good care and enjoy the week, as we always look forward to the weekend!
Warmly,
Pepper
Hi dear Pepper!… I am very happy to know that you enjoyed this post…
You are right regarding the importance of number three and how it would also appear as such during Christian Times.
You’ll see in my next post the importance of three again…
As to the paintings… I am with you regarding Botticelli. A real genius and I love his painting “Primavera”, as well!
Thank you very much for dropping by!. Hugs and al the best to you, Aquileana 🙂

Buongiorno Cara Aquileana
It is interesting in Greek Mythology how the number 3 is a common element: 3 Horae, 3 Kharites, 3 Gorgons, 3 Fates etc. I haven’t quite worked out what the significance of the number is. Don’t suppose you’re able to enlighten me?
Another beautifully written post 😀
grazie
