►Tarot:
“Most Relevant Generalities / Major Arcana” 🗝:

The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana. Tarot deck: Rider,Waite & Smith.
►Introduction and Sketch of this Post:
This is the first post of the series on “Tarot”.
Firstly, in section 1), I´ll present an overview of the story of Tarot, its use for divination purposes, tarot spreads, cards´positions (upright or reversed), total number of cards, division into two categories: Major and Minor Arcana.
In the second section (2) of this post, I´ll assess in-depth the Major Arcana.
For that purpose, I´ll use the classic Rider-Waite deck, illustrated by Pamela Colman-Smith, which has been continually printed since 1909. Hence, it is easy to find in Bookstores or online nowadays.
Let´s keep in mind that the Major Arcana cards are somehow related to Carl Jung’s archetypes. They are “patterns”, inherent part of the Collective Unconscious. These cards symbolise the process we go through in our lives, aiming to become a balanced and integrated person.
With that being said, I´ll offer the meanings of the respective 22 cards comprising this group.
In both, the upright and reversed position. Worth noting that, when you shuffle the tarot cards, they often end up facing in different directions. So basically, each card can show up in an “upright” or a reversed” position.
To end, in the third (3) section, I´ll dig into the so-called “Fool´s Journey”. The Fool card is numbered zero, and if you look closely at the cards, in sequential order, starting with the Fool, you´ll notice that them seem to tell us a story. The story of our own evolution as persons, going through different stages, with their respective struggles and victories. Along this journey, we encounter challenges, face adversity, perform labours, meet people, make hard decisions and fight opposing forces. Each step of the way brings us closer to embrace the Wholeness of Ourselves and of the World. This “journey” is, in fact a cycle. And one could go through the same cycle many times in a lifetime. Or one could just fail to reach the end of the cycle. There is of course, an implied recurring element associated with Karma here. Maybe the “Fool´s Journey” could reach its finish line in another, next life. Or did so in a past life and now he is facing a new, different challenge.
►1) Tarot. Generalities:
Story and Purpose. Rider-Waite Deck: Spreads. Positions. Major and Minor Arcana:
1.1.⇒♦ What is Tarot and how does a Tarot Reading work?:
The Tarot is a pack of playing cards, used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play games such as Italian Tarocchini and French Tarot. In the late 18th century, it began to be used for divination.
In this last sense, Tarot cards are commonly used to measure potential outcomes and evaluate influences surrounding a person, an event, or both. The technical term for tarot reading is Taromancy (divination through the use of tarot cards), which is a subsection of Cartomancy (divination through cards in general).
Tarot reading is not about predictions, but more about possible outcomes as well as examining influences related to the issue at hand. These could be influences which the subject might not even be aware of before the reading.A spread is the arrangement of cards dealt in a reading.
1.2 ⇒♦Spreads:
There are many types of spreads. Usually, the querent (receiver of the reading) asks a general question, or could just picture a situation in his mind. He can keep them to himself. You (person doing the reading) can then pull six cards, representing different aspects of your past, present and future situation. You can pull three cards, instead, where the first represents the past, the second represents the present, and the third represents the future. The three card spread is called The Three Fates. Also, we have the so-called Celtic- Spread Reading, which consists of ten cards representing a variety of things including any past and future influences, personal hopes, and conflicting influences. You can check out other spreads here.
1.3 ⇒♦ Positions of the Cards: Upright or Reversed:
Cards can show up in two positions: Upright or Reversed.
The Upright position represents certain Idea or Situation.
But, what happens when the card shows up in a reversed or inverted position?.
a) If the card is reversed, the meaning is almost always considered to be the opposite of the one the card might reveal when it is upright.
Although this is the predominant criteria (and, hence, the one, I´ll stick to), there are still other ways of interpreting reversals.
b) One of them could be to say that they refer to the previous card (For example: If we have an inverted Strength card (8), it might actually be referring to The Chariot (7)).
c) Other way of interpreting reversals is to say that they represent blocked energies or resistance towards what the card represents.
d) Finally, another way of doing reversals would be to say that it indicates an unconscious influence and, hence, that the querent is not aware of it. For example: If we pulled an inverted Sun, we might say that the querent lacks awareness towards this bright, joyful influence. Maybe because it is hidden, or perhaps because it has not fully developed yet.
e) Another point to keep in mind: some people like to switch “gender” in those cards in which a female or male figure shows up. So, If we pulled Justice (with a Female figure) in an inverted position, we could assume that the characteristics of that card might be related to a Man in the querent´s life.
As I said above, I will provide the meaning of reversed cards as the opposite to which the card reveals in its upright position. But, when doing a reading you can include other interpretation criteria, too.
1.4 ⇒♦ The Tarot Deck. Major and Minor Arcana:
A Tarot deck has 78 cards, consisting of two types of cards: Major and Minor Arcana.
The “Trump cards” (numbered 1 to 21) and the Fool (numbered 0) are called the Major Arcana, while the ten pip and four court cards in each suit are known as Minor Arcana.
•The Minor Arcana (Lesser Secrets) Consists of 56 cards, divided into four suits (Swords, Cups, Wands and Pentacles). Each suit has 14 cards: ten numbered cards and four court cards. The court cards are the King, Queen, Knight and Page/Jack, in each of the four tarot suits.
•The Major Arcana (Greater Secrets), consists of 22 cards, without suits: The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World, and The Fool. Cards from The Magician to The World are numbered in Roman numerals from I to XXI, while The Fool is the only unnumbered card, often placed at the beginning of the deck as 0.
I finally wanted to stress that when one lays out a spread or performs a reading and sees mostly Major Arcana cards, one can assume that the matter in question, and/or the querent’s life, is more profound in comparison to Minor Arcana cards. The Major Arcana are signposts to things, events, and people, that are meant to be taken more seriously and looked at more closely, in general, than the Minor Arcana cards will generally represent.
►2) Major Arcana Cards (Rider-Waite Deck):
These are 22 cards of the Major Arcana and their respective meanings, in both the upright and reversed position.
⇒♦ 0. The Fool:
The Fool is shown at the beginning of his journey with unlimited potential. He has a bag holding off his staff and a bright sun rising up behind him.
The white rose in his left hand represents purity and innocence. He has a guardian in the little white dog warning him of danger as he approaches the edge of the cliff. The fool is unaware, as he is looking up.
The card represents beginnings, overly optimistic approaches and spontaneity. It also reminds us that, even if we are enjoying ourselves, there are always consequences facing our actions.
►Meanings:
•Upright: Living in the moment, feeling carefree or spontaneous, entering a new phase.
•Reversed: Being blocked, restricted.
⇒♦ I. The Magician:
When the Magician appears in a spread, it points to the talents, capabilities and resources at the querent’s disposal. It represents possibilities and the card shows that the querent has all the elements, as the four suits of the Minor Arcana (Swords, Wands, Pentacles and Cups) show up in the card. The magician is the creator of ideas and thoughts.
►Meanings:
•Upright: Acting consciously, acknowledging your motivations. Feeling centered and committed. Being creative and energized.
•Reversed: Inability to act or react. Feeling drained. Losing focus or commitment.
⇒♦ II. The High Priestess:

There is a cloth behind her depicting pomegranates, a symbol of death and the afterlife in Greek Mythology. The High Priestess is the keeper of secret knowledge, as the crystal ball on her head shows. There is a crescent moon beneath her feet, which might represent that the opportunities could increase. •Reversed: Loneliness. Loss in relationships. Rejection. Sticking to others´opinions or values.
⇒♦ VII. The Chariot:
It represents labour and power. There are two sphinxes. Their colors are reversed, pretty much like a Yin-Yang symbol. The driver has a Sun on his head. The Chariot is related to Cancer, in the Horoscope.

This is symbolic of resourcefulness, of softening the power we have to control others. The card shows that harmony has been achieved as the lion seems to be happy as the woman caresses him and his tail is tucked between his legs, in a submissive attitude. The woman has a symbol of infinite, as it appears in the card of the Magician. This represents endless possibilities. The card stresses that our strengths are much more than our physical abilities. Anubis looked like a dog and was a Psychopomp and Ruler of the Underworld. Upon the wheel we can see a Sphinx, keeping the balance of the wheel itself. There is a snake on the left of the card. Some say this snake is Typhon, a monster from Greek Mythology, representing Earth. On the four corners of the card yellow, winged creatures are reading books. This could reference the Book of Revelations. The creatures resemble a lion, a calf, a human being and an eagle. The wheel is a circle, but carrying with it the past experiences. The hanged man indicates a change of perspective, swaying between different possibilities, an inability to make a decision. It is a time of internal focus , introspection and self-discovery.
Being hung by one leg was traditionally a punishment for traitors. In that sense, what the hanged man sees as right is upside down to those who have passed judgement upon him.

►3) The Fool´s Journey… Or the Fool´s Lifecycle:
The Fool (0) has no idea what will happen to him and sets out on his journey with only his hopes. At the start of his trip, the Fool is fresh, open and spontaneous. But he is also unaware of the hardships he will face as he travels this world.
On setting out, the Fool immediately encounters the Magician (I) and the High Priestess (II).
The Magician takes advantage of the opportunities the Fool has in himself and provides him with what he might find useful during his journey. The High Priestess provides the fertile ground in which creative events occur.
As he grows, he meets with the Empress (III). The Fool becomes more and more aware of his surroundings. Hence he comes to know Mother Earth, experiencing an awakening of his senses. The Emperor (IV) represents for the Fool a Father Figure and through him he learns about the importance of laws and rules.

III. The Empress. IV. The Emperor.
The Hierophant (V) teaches the Fool to acknowledge the value of the beliefs and traditions of his culture. The Fool learns to identify with a group and discovers a sense of belonging.
Eventually, the Fool experiences Love (VI). He wants to reach out and become half of a loving partnership. In the meantime, he also feels he need to decide upon his own beliefs.
The Fool becomes an adult, he has a strong identity and a certain mastery over himself. Through discipline and will-power, he has developed an inner control, which are characteristics of the Chariot (VII).
Over time, life presents the Fool with many challenges, some that cause them sorrow and disappointment. But he is resilient and strong. He develops Patience, Compassion and Tolerance, which are all attributes of Strength (VIII).
Sometime during his journey, the Fool begins to look inward, trying to understand his feelings and motivations. He seeks moments of solitude to find his own direction, in accordance with the Hermit card (IX).
After much soul-searching, the Fool begins to see how everything connects. The Cycles he and Nature go through remind him of a Wheel of Fortune (X). He believes in both the power of his freedom to choose and Fate. He faces changes, recognizing his destiny in the sequence of events that led him to certain turning points.
The Fool wonders about Justice (XI). He starts with himself and looks back over his life to trace his actions. He takes responsibility for his past actions so he can make amends and ensure a more honest course for the future.
Sooner or later, he faces an experience that seems too difficult to endure. This overwhelming challenge humbles him until he has no choice but to give up and let go. He feels his world has been turned upside-down. So he pauses free of pressures, like the Hanged Man (XII).
The Fool cuts out what no longer serves him, or what makes him feel bad about himself. Death (XIII) .. . and Rebirth. After al the changes, he is ready to start over.
The Fool realizes the balancing stability of Temperance (XIV) and its powerful effects. By experiencing the extremes, he has come to appreciate moderation.
But moderation doesn´t last forever and vices and excesses could prevail. The Fool confronts the Devil (XV) within himself, in the form of obsessions and addictions.
The Fool may only find release through the sudden change represented by the Tower (XVI). Sometimes only a monumental crisis can generate enough power to smash the walls of the Tower. Only the destruction of the tower will set him free.
After going through a harsh time, the Fool find serenity and calm. He looks up and sees his own Star (XVII), a reflection of his own inner Self, which replaces the negative energies of the Devil.
Woefully, he is still vulnerable to the illusions of the Moon (XVIII). The Fool’s joy is a feeling state. His positive emotions are not yet subject to mental clarity. In his dreamy condition, the Fool is susceptible to fantasy, distortion and a false picture of the truth.
However, the Sun (XIX) shines. It dispels the clouds of confusion and fear. It enlightens, so the Fool both feels and understands the goodness of the world.
The Fool´s false, ego-self has been shed and his true Self manifests. The Fool makes a deeper Judgement (XX) about his life. He forgives himself and others. He feels cleansed and absolved.
The Fool reenters the World (XXI), but this time with a more complete understanding. He has integrated all the disparate parts of himself and achieved wholeness and fulfillment.

XX. Judgement. XXI. The World.

Thank you very much, dear Soiba. I am really pleased that you liked the post… Love & best wishes 🙂
Tarot cards have always intrigued me. I only had a reading once, but Danny was with me and she read him like a book. Ha!
Haha… Yes. I did that the very first times. Now, I feel comfortable enough to have a general meaning of each card.. Although I get confussed with the Court cards, aand some cards from The Minor Arcana. Still learning!.Thank you dear Susie… Love & best wishes 😀
The very best to you too!
Great post, dear Aquileana! And so necessary! I adore Tarot though I don’t practise them. Nevertheless I need the cards’ meaning from time to time. Thank you so much. Look, the card is on the way. It stuck somewhere in France. I hope you will get it soon 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thank you very much for your words here, dear Maria… I had watched a few videos of Tarot and that kind of tirggered my interest… I think it is an interesting way to get an approach as to ceratin circumstances and maybe to think later on how to deal with them… Or to understand why things could have happened, or why certain people acted in a particular way. Overall, I like it… Oh, I hope it arrives!. Anyway, the fact that you had thought of me in that sense means a lot to me and for that I am very grateful. Sending love and all my best wishes! 😀 ❤
Don’t worry, dear Aquileana! It will! By the way, you can ask at your local post office. They can give you more information, I suppose. Tarot is indeed a magic thing and that’s great that you made a post how to study it for self-growing, not only for foretelling. A big problem with Tarot is only our misunderstanding, It’s a great tool to make our life better! 🙂
Very good
Thank you very much, amigo. Un abrazo 😀

Thank you very much, dear Jacqui… Delighted to know that you found it interesting… Love & best wishes 😀
This is absolutely fantastic Aquileana! Your superb insights and depth of knowledge make this a truly definitive Tarot article which will be read and reread, no doubt, by myself and others many, many times over, worldwide! I love the original Rider Waite images, layout and rich symbolism and mythology you’ve explored here. It’s a real WOW post!
Thank you so much for including a web link to my poetry and Jungian thought website, “A Liberated Sheep in a Post Shepherd World.” Last January when I first began writing my “Poetry of the Tarot” series, starting with “The Fool”, I had no idea what treasure and riches the Tarot offer us all! Totally impressive work, well done! Love and blessings, Deborah.
Thanks so much for your words here, dear Deborah… I love this deck too… Maybe with time I will buy another one… But it has to be a sort of classic, Jungian deck, if you get me (pretty much like Rider-Waite´s) When I found your poetry series on Tarot I was thrilled, and I am so glad that you allowed me to include a link to your blog, over here… You write very deep and beautiful poems, very moving. Congrats.
Sending love & best wishes 😀
Goodness Aquileana, I used to read the cards years ago. This is an amazing post. I’m awestruck because for me, these cards should have their place and not be regarded as nonsense…as some folks view them.. so you have done them the biggest service xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Thanks so much der She… Your words really mean a lot to me… You are right as to the fact at many times cards are not read as they should. I hve checked many fre readings on YouTube and certain tarotist are awful… Others are simply cheaters. For instance, the video starts with the cardsalready displayed on the table… Hence, it is obvious that they had already taken time to check out the meanings… 😀 Sendind love and all my best wishes 🙂
I used to do cards years back….playing cards, straight deck readings. Tarot is different but in some ways in terms of the suites and the Minor Arcana, not so, in that the playing card suites link to the four houses of the Minor Arcana cards, as do the card numbers. The Major Arcana is totally unrelated-in my book- to the Jacks, Queens and Kings of the suites. Their story and power is of an entirely different world. True reading of cards, especially Tarot, takes years of practice but it’s much more than reading the card or indeed the person– a lot of folks do that, and make a ton of money for nothing, telling what someone wants to hear. True reading is telling what they might not want to hear, which is quite different…. Now, that sounds, ‘Oh yeah, that’s a disclaimer.’ No. true reading is seeing the meaning in the cards as can make no sense to a reader or drawer at all at that time but will.
Hi there dear She, It seems that Tarot cards were initially used to play and not with divination purposes. Some people use regular Poker cards with divination purposes, as if they were Tarot cards… Still nowadays.
I agree with you as to the Curt cards being totally unrelated with Major Arcana… They tend to depict more mundane things, even when the King and Queen are “strong cards”- As you say: “Their story and power is of an entirely different world”.
You are right as to how certain tarot readers might trick people, telling them what they want to listen… I have found a Tarotist I really like n YouTube (I mentioend her in the first post of the series, on Major Arcana). She is very focused and remains faithful to the meanings. But she really doesn´t get much into details. Anyway, she is very good. This is her channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/CarolsUniverse/videos
Thanks so much for sharing you priceless thoughts… Love & best wishes!! ❤ xxoo
Love to you my darling. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Très joli ton post, j’apprécie. Bonne semaine. Bisous
Merci beaucoup cher Georges, Je te souhaite un belle journée. Bisous! 😀
I find this very interesting. However, my association with tarot cards is rather negative because where I come from, thousands of people were cheated with these. In times of crisis, people are easily lured. I’m writing about it, so soon…
I understand. I have only watched free readings (videos on YouTube). Then bought a deck and read my own cards. Also a friend did a reading for me,… free… I don´t think I´d ever pay for a Tarot reading… But one need to be careful, as there are cheaters everywhere!. Sending love & best wishes 😀
Me neither. A friend did it for me to too once. I don’t know if I’d do it again though. Probably not. However intriguing it is, this thing scares me to death.
I am sorry that you went through such a bad experience… ((Maybe the approach was a little bit hard!?))… wishing you a good day ahead! ❤
Thank you. Likewise.
Wow, there’s a lot to tarot readings. You wouldn’t want just anyone reading your cards. I have to admit, I’ve always been a little afraid of tarot cards.
I get you… But there is no much to be afraid… at least when it comes to symbolism, as the worst cards (from Major Arcana), often mean things like change (Death) or sudden destruction due to weak limsy bases (Tower). Religious reasons might count for certain people, but It is not my case.
Thank you for dropping in!. Happy to know that you found it interesting … Love & best wishes 😀
Wonderful, and timely as I’m writing a passage about the tarot the moment. Like you I have a Rider-Waite deck, and also a Celtic deck. I used to have others then got into oracle cards like Doreen Virtue, native American spirits, and fairy and fey cards. All very interesting with beautiful artworks. Thanks for posting this 🙂
Thanks so much for your words… How interesting to learn that you might be writing a post on tarot soon… 🙂 Hopefully I won´t miss it (feel free to tell me attaching a link here!) … The Celtic deck sounds interesting… If I ever came across a deck I really like, I´d definitely buy it. Love & best wishes 😀
Hi Aquileana, it’s not actually a blog post but forms part of a Tarot-inspired chapter in my novel. I also name the Major Arcana throughout other chapters but without them being a direct reference to Tarot. Just for fun really, yet it does tie in nicely with that Tarot chapter.
But now… you have me thinking that maybe I will make a blog post on the Tarot and Oracle cards I still have in my little collection – just to show the beautiful artwork really. Love and best wishes right back 🙂
I see!… If you ever post on Tarot decks, attach me a link over here, so that way I won´t miss it… Happy weekend 😀 ❤
Will do. Happy weekend 🙂 🙂 🙂
An excellent synopsis of a complex and detailed subject. Well done! I will be returning to read this again.
Thanks so much, dear Rebecca… I really appreciate words… Good to know that you´ll come back (with a deck in hands, maybe!?) 😀 Love & best wishes 😀
Such an interesting and enlightening post Aqui…the meaning of each card is different! I didn’t know this though I have heard about Tarot cards and their study, which must be as engaging as this post.
Thank you for sharing so much of knowledge in one post. I enjoyed reading it. Stay blessed!
Thanks so much, dear Balroop… Isn´t it fascinating. I am glad I once came a across a powerful reading on Youtube which kind of led me to dig into Tarot and eventually, to buy a deck… I am glad that you enjoyed the post, my friend. Love & best wishes 😀
Well done, Aquileana! I enjoyed your interpretation very much.
I have enlisted the aid of the Tarot many times over the years (for my personal use). With practice they can become a very beneficial tool to open what may be otherwise hidden. However, I believe it is good to know that; although we may have a particular question or query, the Tarot, as with any form of divination, will give the querent that which he/she needs to be aware of and not always that which the querent wants to address. This can, until further practice, confuse. All a part of the fun! 🙂
xoxoxo
Hi there dear Carolyn… You are absolutely right, Many times Tarot shows us signals pointing out to a certain direction, the cards could highlight events or causes of events leading to a particular situation. And that could apply to the Future, Present or Past… I like when cards seem to show a chronology in a more clear way. But as you say, one need to be ready to address things… Otherwise it is not only useless but it could make the querent feel bad or anxious…
I really appreciate your clever comment here!… Much love & best wishes 😀
A fascinating overview of the Major Arcana. Especially interesting to know more about the interconnectedness of the cards. Thank you.
Thanks so much… Yes, I love the fact that all cards in Te Major Arcana are cconnected. This also happens with the Minor Arcana cards, as the Suits are referred to Signs of the Horoscope and attributes of the Four elements (Air, Water, Fire and Earth). Besides the numbers tend to mean the same general thing… And many cards are linked between them as they share similar meanings. Sending love and best wishes 😀
Wow, so much effort put into this post, aquileana, thank you. I have always been mesmerised by Tarot cards and know very litlle about them but always want them to tell me what I want to hear, they don’t always listen of course 🙂
So true… If you are ready to face the cards, then do… Otherwise, it is a waste of time… Thanks so much for your words, dear Ina , I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… Sending love and best wishes 😀
You have thoroughly enlightened my ignorance, thank you.
Thanks so much, dear Susan. I am thrilled to know that you enjoyed the post… Much love & best wishes 😀
Very interesting post, dear Aquileana. I know absolutely nothing about tarot cards and have never had a reading so your post was extremely enlightening.
Thank you very much dear Clare… So pleased to know that this post was enlightening o you… I really appreciate the comment. Love & best wishes 😀
My pleasure, dear Aquileana! Hope you have had a fantastic weekend! ❤
Enjoyed the connection to Carl Jung. It will take me much longer to go through all the details and insights about Tarot. Thanks, it’s truly informative.
Thanks so much dear Sally… I am still learning. I have to reinforce my knowledge when it comes to Minor Arcana, which will be the subject of my next post!. Love & best wishes 😀
wow, I was totally caught off gaurd by your topic. Such a detailed and interesting explanation of Tarot. I have been wanting to have a reading for a long time, though I knew little about it. I will have to ck out your links and I will on the watch for your follow up text!
Sending hugs and love to you dear Aquileana. ❤
Hi dear Holly, I got into Tarot because I initially checked out some videos on Youtube (free readings) and a few of them resonated me in a way that was hard to believe!. Then I got the deck… and watched a playlist of YouTube videos explaining each card (I added the link above, at the end of the post)… Now I pretty much know well the meaning of cards, but sometimes I forget certain meaning. I am still reinforcing my knowledge when it comes to Minor Arcana, which will be the subject of my next post!. xo Love & best wishes 😀
There’s a blog “Element Healing” about daily readings. I’ve been following her s long time. I look forward to your next post in Tarot. Huge hugs 😚
I´ll google it… Thanks for telling me…. And for joining in the Tarot Rollercoaster 😀 Huge hugs back! 🙂
😄
WoWzer! What a lesson! 🙂 Love this one. Who knows why?
Thanks so much dear UT.. I am so happy to know that you enjoyed the post!. Love & best wishes 😀
Okay. I have to tell You I get SOOO excited when You post something new! Your intellect, sincerely, is absolutely beautiful and astounding!!! I am running right now, so had to blast through it, but I’ll be back to spend some time. This is amazing!!! How fun. Thank You and Cheers!!! 🙂
Thanks so much!… Your words really make me happy… Delighted to have you here. Love & best wishes 😀
Wow, you did it, Aqui!! Your post on tarots that you had been talking about doing is HERE and it is awesome 🙂 You have covered everything from reverse position to the meaning of specific cards and what “spread” refers too. This is a great guide to have for any skill level at tarot or anyone interested in learning more about it. Thank you for all of the care you put into it ❤ xo
Hi Chris, Thanks so much for yoru words. I really appreciate them.
I am so glad to know that you enjoyed the feature. I personally found guidance in Tarot… and It ´s something you can manage to understand if you learn the cards (its positions included)… and you can do readings for yourself to clarify things. I also like the Horoscope, but, contrary to Tarot, I can not “read” that by myself. And I believe more in these hints Tarot could provide than in what certain people say could happen to you, according to your Astrological sign. xo Sending love & best wishes ❤
I believe you’re right that there may be “hints” in the cards that can help us better plan our next steps. So great that you’re learning Tarot, and thank you for the beautiful reply here to my comment, Aqui! I’m thankful for all that life holds for us, including our continued friendship 🙂 May love light up your weekend ❤
And … thank you for your comment!. So grateful for our friendship!. Happy week, Chris xo ❤
Very interesting, from an academic point of view.
I don’t seek interpretations or advice from outside sources but appreciate the effort you put in these posts and the deep well of information they contain.
Thanks so much dear Emilio…. I am glad you found it interesting, even if you don´t seek guidance from outside sources. Happy day to you. Love & best wishes ❤
Thank you for introducing tarot in such an accessible, timely way!
Thanks so much!… Glad to know that you found it interesting and clear. Love & best wishes ❤
That was illuminating. Thank you dear Aquileana. ❤
Thanks so much, dear Maverick!. Thrilled to know that you enjoyed it 😀 Happy day to you. Love & best wishes ❤
I am delighted to see you take on this topic. And you’ve done so very well . I’ve been reading cards since 1999 and developed quite a knack for it. My go to deck funny enough was The Mythic Tarot based on Greek Mythology. Probably the best deck I ever used. I gave away my decks when I set sail feeling that I’d answered my questions. And with that ‘leap’, I started my ‘Fool’s Journey’ a new. Hugs from Ko Kradang
So interesting to learn that you are into Tarot too.
I´ll have to try to find the Mythic Tarot!… I wanted to start with the Rider Deck as it is the classic deck. But I know which deck I´ll get later on… Someone mentioned above The Celtic spread and that one sounds interesting too.
I see what you say as to using Tarot to solve certain issues or answer questions and once you feel your questions were answered or your search complete… give away the deck. I think it is a good thing to do. Sending love & best wishes, dear Lisa. Hugs from Buenos Aires ❤ 🙂
Wow, I don;t think I have ever had my cards read! This all seems too interesting, especially the whole reversible card meanings!! 🙂
Thanks so much… Really glad to know that you found it interesting. I appreciate the comment and good to see you on Twitter too ❤ Love & best wishes 🙂
Reblogged this on lampmagician.
Thanks so much for sharing, my friend. ❤ Sending love & best wishes! 😀
The same back to You dearest ❤❤
❤ xx 🙂
Thank you for this post Aquileana, it is detailed, accurate and lovingly done. ❤
Thanks so much, dear Jane!. Thrilled to know that you enjoyed it 😀 Happy day to you. Love & best wishes ❤
I used to be so interested in Tarot and it’s archetypes and had several decks. This is a wonderful summary of the Major Archana, Aquileana. And a visually beautiful deck.
Excellent to learn that you like Tarot too, dear Diana…. I will probably buy one or two more decks…. It is such a fascinating thing!… Love & best wishes ❤
Oh, dear Aquileana, you throw me into real deep water with your tarot cards and spreads, of which I have never ever heard! It’s absolutely amazing what one seems to be able to find out about ones own potentials! I would like to be more often able to act like described with the Judgement card! Thank you very much for this trip to new horizons. Very best regards Martina
Thanks so much dear Martina!… I am glad that this introductory post on Tarot was useful and interesting to you.. It is something you can learn, and that´s make it special for me… as you can read your own cards, as a personal exercise to sort out issues in advance or understand events in your life. I know what you mean as to the Judgement card. I feel the same way!.
Sending love & best wishes ❤
💐👍🌷
Oh my gosh, I love this! Thanks for sharing such interesting info on the cards!
Thank YOU for dropping in and so glad to know that you enjoyed it!. Love & best wishes ❤
Hi Aquileana, Thanks for another lovely post. I’ve always been curious about Tarot cards and had a reading done once but didn’t really know how they worked.
I like the idea of the cyclical journey. It’s an accurate reflection or metaphor for life. And I do believe tarot cards are able to tell us about existing energies or at the very least make us think about our situation in a new light. I think some people are overly hasty to reject the idea of using cards or intuition as a guide because they believe so strongly in the scientific method. But how do they know these other methods don’t have their own rationality, one that science hasn’t proven… yet?
Hi Carolee, Thanks so much!. I agree with you as to some poeple rejecting Tarot… because it is not scientific… It even happened to me (on Tiwtter) that a man whoo has retweeted the tweet on Tarot!.. Told me he thought the posts looked interesting but that he found that Tarot was scary… So I told him thathe shouldn´t be afraid of it as there were no bad cards… In fact Death (which sems to be the worst one) means Change. So, that´s when he told me, literally: “I am a Christian, if that makes sense”.
I replied that I also believed in God… But not in an orthodox way. So here you have another variation on the arguments against it… My position is more to see certain things as complementary. Plus as a believer I would be more concerned about other issues than Tarot to be honest. Sending love & best wishes. 🙂
It’s interesting because a friend of mine who read the cards for me was also a church-going christian, so you never know. I think it’s good to be open-minded. I used to belong to a religion which was fairly liberal on one hand but also believed that theirs was the only one way to salvation. I’ve learned other ways to have a spiritual practice eg. through meditation and now I think there are so many different ways we can improve as human beings, be it spiritual, mental, or physical. No need to be afraid of the different tools we use 🙂 Love and best wishes to you! xoxo
We are similar in that sense!… I like to find guidance in many different “places”… I think that being open to “possibilities” provides us more background to understand things, us and others a little bit better. Love back at you, dear Carolee ❤ xoxo
I love reading my tarot, Aquileana, but it would be even better if we lived closer and you could do it! I am very pragmatic but I really enjoy both my tarot and horoscope. It helps me work through my daily problems by focusing my mind. Although I am a lapsed Catholic, I always turn to prayer and an empty church when in distress. I am a Cancer with Sagittarius rising. Chatty and cranky, at the same time. 😸
I love what you say as to finding spiritual guidance in different places or domains… I believe in God, but I am not much about Dogmas or orthodoxy. So I don´t see why I can´t enjoy a tarot reading I Also like reading my horoscope 🙂
It would be cool if we lived closer… And do a reading for you…
If you are curious to check out an online free reading. Check this out (you can pull nine cards, and you´ll get the meaning. Free) : http://www.nexttarot.com/celtic-cross-tarot-reading.aspx … Sending love & best wishes ❤
We are soul sisters! I love to go to church but can’t be bothered with priests wittering on unless in is in Latin. 😇 I can’t wait to try your tarot link. My favorite is Lotus Tarot – also free. K x
Yes!… Good to know that we are similar… I had already suspected that. Enjoy the Celtic Cross link … ((I could also have pulled three or six cards for you …. Maybe if you want I can do so later on… I´ll attach it as comment back over here. But maybe the link is enough and you find the answer or hint right there!)).. As you wish … xx
Thank you, Aquileana! I think I got some of my answers – that life is staying steady and that I am sexually alluring. I already knew the latter…😈
Excellent 😀 Good to know that the cards made sense ❤ Hugs
❤️❤️
L’ho moilto apprezzato.
Un abbraccio
Gian Paolo
Indeed… Initially, was a card game … Originated in Italy. I wonder how the original game would have been!. Thanks for dropping in. So glad that you enjoyed it. Sending love & best wishes, Gian Paolo.
Ciao! Un abbraccio
This is quite a departure from your usual, but done with as much thoroughness as usual, thank you Aquileana 🙂
Thanks so much, dear Sylvie … So glad that you enjoyed this quite unsual post. Sending love & best wishes. Hugs 😀
Wow, very interesting, my friend 🙂
Thanks so much, my friend… Really glad to know that you enjoyed it. Love & best wishes. 😀
This would be a great reference for any student of the Tarot, Aquileana ❤
Thank you, dear Tina… I thought it could be helpful… I am still learning too 🙂 Have a great day. Love & best wishes. 😀
E’ sempre un gran piacere soffermarsi sui tuoi prodigiosi e speciali articoli, carissima
Un abbraccio,silvia
Grazie mille, cara Silvia!. È bello sapere che l’hai trovato interessante. Un abbraccio 😀
Very interesting! I wish you a happy new year, my friend ❤
Thanks so much, dear Takami …I appreciate the visit and wish you an excellent 2018. Sending love ❤
This is amazing! It was very fun the learn that originally Tarot cards were for a card game! I had no idea. The Rider-Waite deck is my favorite. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a reading…and You’ve made me want to get one. Years ago I owned the Animal Spirit deck. But gosh….there’s just something about this deck. Thanks for pointing out the little details of the cards. I hadn’t noticed some of those. And I agree with Tina Frisco, This WOULD make a great reference for any student. Thank You and Cheers!!! 🙂
Thank you!. I am with you as to the Rider Waite deck… I have also noticed that many tarotists use this deck… or a more modern deck… The images are quite the same than the Rider Deck .. But more updated… Others ue decks which cards seem totally different… If I were into those different decks, I´ll choose a deck with mythological images. There is also a gorgeous deck featuring cats on it… 😀 In the future, I´ll quite sure purchase one or more decks… Best to you 🙂
Wow. I’ve never heard of the cat deck. My sister would FLIP over that! You may have just given me an idea for her next birthday gift! Thank You! Cheers!!! 🙂
Yes!… I am sure she´ll love it!!!… Happy weekned to you! ❤ 🙂
You too!!! 🙂
Wow … and to think this is the introduction! 😉
Haha!. Yes and the second part is so much longer. But I already have been thinking on how to make it shorter. Thank you dear Frank… Will be over to visit you soon. All my best wishes 😀
😃 … I especially hope you stop by Sunday night/Monday.
Hi Aquileana. I didn’t know you were into tarot! I’ve been reading tarot for a little more than 20 years. So first I compliment what a comprehensive, well rounded introduction you provided here. There is sooo much about tarot. It was fun to revisit the details. I’m looking forward to this series. (WordPress refuses to send me any notices, so I may be late keeping up… but I’m looking forward to it just the same.) Hugs!
Excellent to know that you have been reading tarot cards for quite a while!!! 😀 High Five for this common interest we share… It is great to have you over here, dear Teagan. So I thank you for the visit and comment… Hugs, love & best wishes 😀
As usual a thorough work in a great post, about Tarot, I figure you may like this relation of terms playing with the letters of the word Taro.
Rota: the wheel, or cycle
Taro: the Tarot, or Book of Thoth
Orat: speaks or teaches (verb)
Tora: the Torah, or Law
Ator: Hathor, the goddess of love.
Hence, The wheel of Tarot speaks the law of Hathor, or The cycle of Tarot teaches the law of love.
Torah (Hebrew), “The Law – Law Giver”
Thoth Egyptian god
Tarosh (Egyptian), “The royal way”
Torah -Torus in Sacred Geometry
Taurus Astrology
Rota (Latin), “Wheel” – Wheel of karma – Wheels Within Wheels
Taro River in Northern Italy
Taru (Hindu), “Cards”
Troa (Hebrew), “Gate”
Tares, meaning the dot border on old cards
Tarotee, meaning a pattern on the backs
TORA: is the law of evolution and a Hebrew word.
ORAT: is the language, is the verb from Latin oratio.
RATO: is realization from Latin ratus: the one who realize.
ATOR: is Athor o Athys, Egyptian divinity.
ROTA: is the Wheel of Destiny, like in Rotate
OTAR: to listen to, from the Greek otarion, ear.
TARO: Destiny and the 22 Arcana.
AROT: is to work (Spiritual effort to uplift consciousnesses ), from the Greek arotos, labor.
We get with this combination : Watch closely the Wheel of Destiny. and work diligently…
Best regards. 🙂
This is such an excellent comment/contribution. Thanks so much for adding the meanings of the different words associated with the main word “Tarot”…
We were going to write something together as to the Spartan women… and somehow I totally forgot it. And jumped into Tarot. I wanted to ask you, instead of the previous idea… if you are interested in Tarot Minor Arcana as subject. I will be explaining the cards … basically that´s it… BUT there are 56 cards in total. So it will be quite a bit. If you want to join me in, with a poem, analysis on something related to this (other than the cards and their meanings), write me a brief note to this email apdmont@gmail.com … I will be available to discuss this in about 3 weeks… so think it over, with no pressures, you tell me in a few days if you are in… And then we talk in detail by then… Otherwise we´ll do the Gender post (Spartan Women) in Greece… and maybe in that same post we can consider the role of some women in greek tragedies (Exemplary women, Sofocles´Antigone… and malefic ones, as happens Euripides´Medea)…
You choose. If you prefer the latter, I´ll get back to Greek Mythology not before June, I am guessing. Write me if you want to collaborate or have other ideas, more or less related to this two suggestions .. or other ideas.
Love & best wishes. 🙂
Alright, I will send you soon something to your email. 🙂
Great… No rushes anyway !!! 😀
Got your email! 🙂 (It took me a while to identify you, as you might have noticed!). Entonces: compartimos el Español… qué sorpresa 😀 I guess we´ll be discussing all this in a few months!. Thank you for joining in! 😀 Love & best wishes
I’ve always liked tarot cards; they are so colourful and interesting. Your pack is really lovely. 🙂
Thank you for an in depth look into all the various signs and meanings. Reading them must take years of practice.
Thanks so much my friend… Delighted that you enjoyed teh first post of teh Tarot series. Yes, it takes time to learn each card (there are 78 in total… so)… But with videos I have l learnt quite a bit… And the purpose of these posts is also to provide a good summary, using various sources… for everyone interested. Sending love & best wishes 😀
It is fascinating and I admire your ability to learn all of this. 🙂
Have a great weekend. Cheers Scifi 🙂
Thanks so much dear Scifi! 😀 Have a great weekend as well! ❤
Thank you 😀
Aq, you have done a marvelous job taking us through the Major Arcana.
You have put a lot into the summation of general meanings.
You are good teacher, an Athena! As you continue reading for others, meanings will become enhanced, even obtuse, depending on the positions the cards land in, within the layouts for readings.
The Ryder Deck s still my fave. If one forgets the full meaning of a card, the images are very helpful & provoke instinctive reminders.
I also own the Aquarian Tarot, which is illustrated by David Palladini. Among his many accomplishments is illustrating “The Eyes of the Dragon” by Stephen King.
However, the illustrations in the Aquarian deck are sparse in comparison to the Ryder deck. Yet, they hold the same meanings. Point is that the reader must be quite versed when reading from the Aquarian deck. Although, it does add a nice sense of mysticism when one reads from such bare bones.
I look ford to your post(s) on the Minor Arcana. Some of my fave cards are in the Minor Arcana IE: All of the Queens, All of the Aces, 6, 9 & 10 of Pentacles, 2 & 6 of Cups, 6 of Wands and there are a few more (Just going off the top of my head here)
Some of my most dreaded cards are in the Minor Arcana – 3, 4, 7, 9 & 10 of Swords, and the 5 of Pentacles.
Take care, and happy Taroting!
{{Hugs}} ❤
Hi Re!,
How interesting to learn about that Aquarian deck you own…
When I watch YouTube videos, those who do the videos many times have different decks and yet the cards mean the same…. SO I assume that Rider Waite is the parameter, and that´s why it is considered the classic deck…
I agree with you as to: All the aces and all the Queens… And Kings?!
I´ll say: From Wands: 4 & 6.
Cups: 2, 3, 10
Pentacles. Like you: 6, 9 & 10… I´ll probably add 8 as well.
Swords: they are quite awful… All of them. Except: Queen, King… And Ace (but Ace of Swords is less relevant than other aces, anyway… Page is quite similar to the Fool, so not so good either). Poor Air Zodiac Signs!.. I would like to know why all swords are quite dreadful!.
Thanks so much for your great comment. I am so glad that we share this interest/ passion for Tarot. Many hugs! ❤
Agree, especially about the Kings. ❤ to Kings.
It's just that I like the Queens… because I am one… & so are you! We are Queens. All women are Queens. ☮️☮️
Ha…. True! … thanks so much ma lady ❤ 😀 Hugs to you.
Hi Aquileana – Wow, so surprised to see this post! You’ve been doing Greek mythology for years. Have you moved on from that or is Tarot a temporary diversion? I had this deck for many years, and read the cards for myself when I needed guidance. I love how you not only show the cards’ meanings, but the story they tell of the journey our psyche goes through. There is a book called Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal Journey, which examines each card in depth from the Jungian perspective. This was my guide to interpreting the cards. The book and cards had to be left behind somewhere on my journey around the world. It was time to let them go. Looking forward to your upcoming posts about this!
Hi dearJulie,
Great to know that you enjoy Tarot … and have been reading your own cards too.
I felt it was a challenge for me to get into this new issue, when it comes to blogging… But Thought it could be a good twist and plan to link cards to Greek Gods-Goddess at some point .. I´ll go back to Mythology, of course.
Thanks for the book recommendation. That book sounds very interesting to me… I´ll check it out… Sending love & best wishes 😀
I’ve never known much about tarot – this is great. I’m going to enjoy reading more!
Thanks so much dear Sarah… So glad to know that you are enjoying the Tarot Ride! 😀 Love & best wishes 🙂
I didn’t know what tarot is, now I know. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much!. Glad to know that…. Love & best wishes 🙂
Fascinating, I love the guide to each card. Have you read The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino, it’s a story about people meeting and telling their stories through tarot cards placed across a table and intersecting so the cards change meanings. It’s a very good read. HAppy New Year by the way, my friend.
Thanks so much, dear Ste… That book souds very interesting… I have read “The Invisible Cities” by Calvino and think it is brilliant. I´ll check it out!… Good to see you are back… Love & best wishes 🙂
Invisible Cities is my favourite of his works, although I love how each work of his is so stylistically different. It’s good to be back!
Such a genius!…. welcome back 😀
Nice post, Aquileana. Very detailed.
Thanks so much, dear Jeff!. Happy to know that you liked it. Love & best wishes 🙂
My Dear Friend. I hope all is well. This is amazing, the amount of detail is so very informative, thank you.
HI Gene… Good to see you… Thank you, I appreciate the visit & comment!!!! Happy 2018!!!! Love & best wishes 🙂
Dear Aquileana
I wish you happy new year
Thank you for great sharing
Kisses
Anita
Thank you dear Anitta ❤ … I wish you an excellent 2018 as well. Sending love & best wishes 🙂
A wonderful and comprehensive post about tarot, Aqui! 😀😀 It was fascinating to learn about this history of tarot cards and I read the individual ones with interest. The pictures of the cards are beautiful and somehow ethereal. There is so much to learn and I am more impressed by anyone who actually uses them. My friend has wanted me to take part but I’ve always backed away…now I’m thoroughly intrigued and may well say yes!
HI there dear Annika, Thanks so much for your comment here and glad that you enjoyed the first post on the Tarot Series. Ethereal is a great word to describe this deck!… I´d say “Go for it”… As far as I am concerned, Tarot has always been enlightening to me … It might help you clarify things. Love & best wishes 🙂
Absolutely fascinating post Aq. I had to read it twice and still so much to learn. I’ve bookmarked because I want to check out those links and pull out my own cards that I’ve had for years and couldn’t seem to figure out how to do a reading. Thank you! Looking forward to more. ❤ xxx
Thank you very much, Deb… So you also have a Tarot deck!???. I am thrilled!… 😀 Stay tuned for part 2 (minor Arcana)… By then we´ll complete the whole deck… 🙂 Sending love and wishing you a great week ❤ xo
Thanks Aq. I’m looking forward to part 1 🙂 ❤
Sounds great, my friend ❤ 🙂
❤
Wow Aquileana! Thank you … I’ll be saving this for a re-read for sure. You clearly have an excellent understanding of The Tarot. Much to digest, and absorb thank you again.
Thanks so much dear Susan… I think Tarot could help us sort out our issues… And I particular enjoy reading my own cards. My next post will address the Minor Arcana … And with that, the deck will be completed. I appreciate the visit and comment. Sending love & best wishes 😀 ❤
I’m taking my tarot deck down to Cape Town this coming week and will have a very serious look and work with it with your post as a VERY helpful guide, thank you again 🙂 🙂 Love xxx
Sounds amazing… You can learn the Major Arcana… And then next month (next post)… You´´l continue the other cards from minor Arcana… Although they are more, I have a few tricks to memorize them (considering Numbers and Suits)… Sending much love! xx ❤
fascinating!
no wonder i’ve
not played
with those cards 🙂
Thanks so much!!!… Appreciate it. And … yes: If you don´t want to know, then don´t ask the cards 😀 xx Sending love!

Thanks so much for sharing!…. I appreciate it a lot 😀 Have a great day. Sending love ❤
My congratulations for your wark !
Thank you… wishing you a nice day ❤
Great post!
Hooray for tarot! I have the Thoth deck which I use about once a year around Christmas time to see what my roadmap for the coming year is going to look like. I love looking at a beautiful deck of tarot cards — there’s so many symbols to focus on in each one — and I’m surprised that more people don’t embrace the wisdom and meaning they provide. Thanks for another lovely post, Amalia. ox
Hi there dear Pam,
How great to know that you liek Tarot as much as I do!. I am surprised that some people are skeptical as to Tarot as it could be revealing, Of course I am not pointing out to predictions… But to the personal, introspective exercise associated with Tarot reading (I like to read my own cards, if possible, if I need to check out meanings … I do, as I am still learning. But, overall I get it!). Anyway, Tarot has helped me a lot, and I find it is a tool of wisdom and spiritual guidance.
Thank you very much for dropping in and for sharing your insights. Love & best wishes xx 🙂 ❤
p.s. Is it just my imagination or was the Hermit in this particular deck the inspiration for a Led Zeppelin album cover?
Yes. I found it… Absolutely The Hermit card (rider Waite version shows up in Led Zeppelin´s album “Stairway to Heaven”. Here is the image: https://static.stereogum.com/blogs.dir/2/files/2011/11/Led-Zeppelin-Stairway-To-Heaven-608×937.jpg … I had no idea!. Thank so much for telling mw… Great finding! ❤ xo
I knew this because when I was a kid I made a reproduction of that cover in an oil painting. Very haunting image. 🎨 👩🏻🎨
That´s amazing!!! & … Clearly a proof that the tarot symbols are part of the Collective Unconscious … they appear… and reappear, once and over again 🙂 xx
And are in all the myths,
legends and archetypes!🌀
Isn´t it amazing!? ❤ 🙂 Hugs

Welcome
Wow Aquileana, it must have taken you ages to put this post together my friend.. I am delighted that you are exploring Tarot.. I have several decks myself and use the Aleister Crowley Deck Troth Tarot . The paintings on these also very detailed..
I only do them for myself when I need a little extra guidance, I am no expert, so will follow your own explanations of the Tarot with great interest Aquileana .
Your post is beautifully presented as always, and I love this deck you have chosen to share..
Love and Warm well wishes my friend for the beginnings of 2018 and Beyond xxx ❤ Hugs Sue
Thanks so much for your words here dear friend… I only have this deck (the Rider Waite deck)… But I have received many recommendations and I will have to check out the one you mentioned!. I am like you… Now that I am more confident with the meanings of the cards, I read them for myself… Also I check out a few YouTube videos .. The readings are monthly and for each Zodiac sign… But I have felt that many readings there really resonated with me as they were totally related to my situation by then. Tarot is so deep and there is much to unravel!. My next post will be on Minor Arcana, and with that I´ll cover the whole deck, BTW … Hugs and happy Ne Year to you too, dear Sue. I wish you the very best ❤
Wonderful Aquileana and when reading for oneself i found them accurate if you understand the cards.. 🙂 Much love to you also.. And will so enjoy your thoughts on the cards too 🙂 xx
I think so too… Thanks so much dear Sue. Your words mean a lot… Hugs to you! 😀 ❤
❤ Hugs xx
The amount of work you have put into this incredibly detailed and erudite article( it’s not a post it’s a book)! is amazing. Illuminating and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you
Thanks so much dear Paul. Coming from you, it means a lot… Wishing you a great day! 🙂
Then I guess we’ve got a mutual appreciation society because I love what you do PX
Thanks so much, Paul! ❤ 🙂
Cant do emojis or give yr comment a like so HUGS BACK! PX
What an amazing resource Aquileana. Thank you! As a tarot reader myself, I know how much time and attention this was to put together. Over the years, a deeper understanding has evolved, along with an intuitive sense of meaning.
You have captured the Major Arcana so beautifully. 💛
Thank you very much dear Val. Excellent to learn that you like Tarot and read your own cards!. I have found lots of “advice” in the cards and Tarot have helped me understand why certain personal things happened the way they did. It was quite revealing!… Wishing you a great day. Love & all the best to you 🙂
I think I’ve only seen a Tarot deck once in real life. All of my familiarity comes from movies. As always, you go into so much depth on a topic I have the merest surface knowledge of and create quite the valuable resource for those who will come looking for it.
Thanks so much dear Jeri. I think Tarot could become a good tool to understand why things and people happen or behave… I have used the cards more to try to figure out past events and not to try to guess what will come next. I found it claryfing and helpful. Plus, I wanted to learn the cards meanings in order to do my own readings.
Wishing you a great day. Love & best to you 😀
I didn’t know much about the tarot at all, this is fascinating, I’m too fearful to have a reading I think I prefer not to know my destiny/ fate. I didn’t know Scorpio was death and resurrection. I love the artwork of the cards you show in your post. I will have to come back again and again for another read as its too much to take in on one reading. Well done, and I hope your New Year has started well.
Thank you very much Char… You know… The cards have helped me make sense of past events. It is not always about what will happen… It could help you understand a relationship with someone you are dating or you fancy, or things related to your career…. Remember: you are are the one who asks 😀 Delighted to see you here and to know that you enjoyed the post, my friend. Sending love & best wishes 😀 ❤ Happy 2018! 🙂
I didn’t know that, now that’s intriguing.
Very nice. (Feliz año) 😉
I don’t read tarot, but I play it, the French variety, based on the Tarot de Marseille I think.
Mis mejores deseos para 2018.
Brian
Thanks so much…. I might later on show that Marseille deck you are referring too… We´ll see (It depends on other person, not on me as I don´t own one). Wishing you an excellent 2018, lo mejor para este año, Brian…. ❤ 🙂
Gracias. Igual. Had lots of fun. Look it up. No creo que haya llegado hasta Argentina.
Me lo apuntaré…. Gracias por el dato 😀 Un abrazo! 🙂
❤
How very, very interesting! I have never studied Tarot, but I shall now! Buying a pack – well, I have to start somewhere!
Sounds great. I recommend you the Rider-Waite deck (featured here). You´ll find more information online too as it is a Classic deck. Thanks so much for dropping in and for your comment.
Good luck with Tarot! 🙂
Thank you for visiting my site again, Aquileana, and I’m especially pleased you enjoyed my “Fiction is Reality” poem. Since I also write historical fiction based on fact, I am always fascinated by your incredible and complete historical research. This is probably the most complete information I have ever read on Tarot, which I am a reader and collector of many decks. Based on your research and the theme of my poem, we must wonder how much of the historical records “set in stone” are false, and the real story is lost … alas. But perhaps with far-reaching minds, such as ours, we will reveal the truth!
Hi Deborah… It was my pleausre to stop by. I just watched the little clip you had shared on my blog and… well: that was something special! (thank you)… I often wonder about Reality and how we define it… With Technology and all those virtual worlds colliding with our real world. Fictional stories depict our reality … as far as they are plausible, they approach what we understand as REAL. What was is really Real?… Can we fully trust in those historical records, “set in stone” as you say?… Too much to ponder!… How great that you are into Tarot as well. Excellent. 😉 Sending love ❤
It sounds like you and I both reach out to understand the world through various media–Tarot, history repeats itself, what is fact versus fiction… Thanks for sharing your insights!
Your approach is so interesting!… Thank you for dropping in ❤ Love & best wishes 🙂
An excellent study of Tarot with thorough explanations of the meaning of the cards and their use in divination through history. You have gifted us all with a real treasure packed full of valuable information. Thank you Aquileana
Thanks so much dear Eddie… your words mean a lot to me… I really appreciate them… wishing you a great day!. Love & best wishes 🙂 ❤
Thank You. Great presentation of Tarot. Of course, I have hear of it, but my deeper knowledge was “none”.
Have a wonderful day! ¡Abrazos!
Thanks so much dear Sartenada… I am glad that you enjoyed the post and got a deeper meaning of Tarot. wishing you a great day!. Love & best wishes 🙂 ❤
Bonjour Amalia,

… Bisous ❤ 🙂
This is such a wonderful piece of research on tarot and tarot reading. So informative and can definitely see the amount of research and knowledge that has gone into all of it. And wonderful to hear there will be more posts! I’ve always been very curious about tarot so read this post with a lot of interest. I have always wondered if the cards predicted the future…and thought that must be too good to be true, lol. ‘tarot reading is not about predictions, but more about possbile outcomes’ – such a level-headed way to put it. Life is always open to interpretation. Sometimes some things might be expected but other times, things might seem too coincidental 😀
Really fascinating how tarot is linked to the zodiac signs, and in a way also astrology. Thank you so much for the YouTube link at the end. I will check it out. Wishing you well, sweet Aqui 😘❤
Hi dear Mabel,
Thanks so much for your words, linda!. I am glad that this post caught your attention. In my personal experience, I tend to use tarot to make sense of a current situation.. To try to understand why something happened and how it might unravel in the future. The good thing is that You (i.e the querent) aks the questions, so basically you can focus your reading in a certain direction. It can help you sort out problems. And … as you could have noticed, the cards have a deep meaning, most times (at least when it comes to Major Arcana) related to Human attributes (virtues and vices), so there is a lot of psychology there.
I am sure that you´ll love the second part (Minor Arcana). Maybe you should buy yourself a deck too! 😀 Love & best wishes, my friend 🙂 ❤
Wow! The research you’ve had to put into this. My goodness, this is thorough — and you’re just getting started! 😀
Ha!. Yes… and Minor Arcana has 56 cards (I´ll try to make it short, though!). Thank you very much for your nice words, dear Linda!, wishing you a great day!. Love & best wishes 🙂 ❤
Bisous ❤ 🙂
Great post, dear Aquileana! Thank you for the story behind the cards.
Thanks for the recommended “deepening knowledge” tips.
Wishing you a nice weekend
XOXO Julia ❤
Thanks so much dear Julia… Thrilled to read your words and to know that you found it interesting. Wishing you a great week ahed!. Love & best wishes 🙂 ❤ xo
Informative and well-written discussion here, Aquileana. Thanks so much. Tarot can be complicated, yet you did a great job of presenting it understandably.
Thanks so much dear Jet…. I am really glad to know that you enjoyed the post and found it clear Wishing you a great week ahed!. Love & best wishes 🙂 ❤
Y me pareció fascinante.
Igualmente, me parece mayúsculo.

WOW! ¡Increíble! What a comprehensive post, full of great information on all things tarot! You effectively wrote a little book here! I didn’t really know about the major and minor arcanas, the details behind each card – only that each one had some meaning, but I didn’t know what they were. This is an incredible guide and makes me want to look into tarot more. I also didn’t know that it is a relatively new practice. I guess I thought it had been in practice for thousands of years, but not until the 1800s. Huh. So fascinating! Thank you for sharing such a great write up. I definitely love to have my “cards read.” I’ve often thought about how to “divine the cards” for myself. 🙂 Have a wonderful day! Looking forward to part II of this. 🙂
Thanks so much, my friend. You are a very “spiritual” person. Hence, You´ll love Tarot. I included at the end of the post some links that could be useful. I particularly learnt a lot with a YouTube playlist which explains all the cards (Major & Minor Arcana); I watched it a few times… In the second post of the series (next one!), I´ll dig further into Minor Arcana (56 cards total, uf!). If you want to learn Tarot, I recommend you to start with the Rider Waite deck, the one I am using here… Hugs and all my best wishes ❤ 😉
A truly fascinating post, Aquileana. I’ve been curious about Tarot readings but did not know that the cards were originally used for game playing. I am bookmarking this post to come back and reread. Love and hugs, dear friend.
Thank you dear Michelle. It is interesting to keep in mind that Tarot readings could help us make sense of the Past … Hence present… Thus Future. I like to read my own cards… For that, one needs to learn the meanings of the cards… That is the first step if you want to better understand things. Plus…when I watch readings on YouTube I can say if the “Tarotist” is a good one!. Thrileld to know that you liked the post, my friend. Hugs to you ❤ 🙂
This is fascinating. I always thought Tarot readings told the future and through your post have learned so much more. Interesting read.
Thanks so much dear Steph… Tarot is just one tool… But I think it could help us understand a current situation in order to be prepared to what comes next 😀 Sending love ❤
Back at ya!! ❤
Wow, the depth of research… fabulous post. XOXO
Thanks so much dear Brenda. Thrilled to know that you enjoyed it… Sending love. Happy Sunday toyou & your Family xxoo ❤
And to you and yours. XOXO
❤ xxoo
So wonderful and educational. I never knew what the Tarot was about and now, thanks to you, I do. Can’t wait for your next posts. Thanks a million.
Thanks so much… So glad that you enjoyed this first post of the Tarot Series. Sending love & all my best wishes ❤ 😉

Thanks so much for sharing dear Colleen. I am adding a widget from my blog to yours, as a sign of retribution and recognition for your great job over there (will link to your main author site) Love & best wishes 😀
Wow- again, just an amazingly educational post. Everyone has heard about Tarot cards but know so little about them. They always seemed so mysterious to me.
Good see see you again. Over at Susie’s blog. I’m getting back into blogging more again.
Hi Phil,
Thanks so much for dropping in and for your words as to the post, glad that you enjoyed it. And what a nice surprise to see you again on Susie´s blog, and here!. Will definitely check out your updates. Happy week ahead 😀
I too, never knew what Tarot was about. Thank you for the education!
Thanks so much, dear Lavinia. Delighted to know that you learnt something new concerning Tarot. Have a great week ❤ xx
You continuously amaze me! What a lovely post! These characters of the tarot… so nice to see them again and again! I relate a lot with the “fool,” as I always seem to be at the beginning of my journey (and sometimes that feels like the end.) Lots of love….
Ka
Thanks so much dear Ka. I know what you mean. Endings and new beginnings: it could be difficult to differentiate them at times. I guess the Death and Tower card could help us know when endings happen. And the World card when the cycle is over or about to end. But … yes, I also relate to the Fool card for the very same reasons you highlight. Sending love & best wishes 😀 ❤
Great article! I am always interested in tarot! Check out my poetry, caelidotblog.wordpress.com/blog/
Thanks so much… I appreciate the visit and comment. I´ll sure check out your blog. ❤ All my best wishes ⭐
I liked this post the other night even though I had only read half of it. I finished reading it tonight. Prior to this, my knowledge of this subject was absolutely zero. It’s a little higher now. Quite interesting. Thanks for your time and effort in putting this post together.
Thanks so much… Maybe in the future you can try your own Tarot readings?… Good to know that you found it intriguing!… Sending love & best wishes 😀
Interesting! Isn’t it so that you need a special gift to read cards? Any cards? If you have such an interest you probably have this sense and gift.
I come from a family (Latvian) where everybody could do something: my grandmother could say words on wounds and they stopped bleeding, take off pain, and she left me some words, too. I don’t think, however, one can help him/herself. It might be so that to help oneself is much more difficult. My dad could see the future very clearly, up to exact time of his death. Grand mother also was reading palm like a book. Well, dad’s sister, my aunt, was (I think so, but do not know) more into black magic, but very good with cards. She passed away quite many years ago. Once she did a reading with Tarot cards for me. That was some 45 or a bit more years ago. I still remember everything. I was using simply cards, new cards every time for every reading when I studied at the University. Lots of people wanted me to do that. Strange things started to happen, I stopped using cards and never ever did that again.
I understand how interesting it is. It is a science and art together. It is also a bit scary.
Well, I personally stick with reading people in person now. I do sometimes wonder why somebody speaks because energies are so present that words become unnecessary.
This is a new subject. I love how you wrote about mythology and psychology, as well as art and everything associated.
I love such topics. It takes a lot of learning. I am abnormally interested in numerology and I see it working, as well.
Wonderful post, very exciting!
Dear Inese,
Truly powerful to have such a gifted family!. For good… and bad, as some gifts could become a burden, given certain talents; I am guessing.
As I am majorly skeptical; I am not scared about the cards, at least not maybe because I see Tarot more like a playful tool of introspection and knowledge- But, I see what you mean. I have recently come across a gypsy who wanted to tell me about the Future and she approached me in a very odd, agressive way. She told me that someone had performed Black Magic on me … and that she could help me, etc. But It was overall really creepy.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us!… Pleased to know that you liked the post. Love & best wishes! 🙂
I had these once and gave them away to someone who needed them. I have similar decks now, the Medicine Cards, the Inner Child cards and the Angel cards. I love your sharing of the meanings, reverse messages and uses of the cards. Nothing is perfect but these cards can greatly help humans on their healing journeys in life. Children in my care took great pleasure in using the Inner Child cards which was magical to witness. Sometimes we simply need confirmation of something. Great post, lovely lady, thank you. ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Janni.
Thanks so much for dropping in and sharing your experiences as to Tarot.
Great to know that you have a positive outlook on it… I do too… Cards helped me when I needed guidance and some sort of approach as to certain things. So, yes. I agree with you. I´ll eventually buy one or more decks… I´ll keep in mind the ones you mention in your comment. Excellent!.
Sending love & best wishes ❤ 🙂
❤️❤️❤️

What a fascinating post! Tarot reading has always intrigued me, and the gift people have who use them. After reading your article, I have a better understanding of the meaning of the cards. I am going to have to re-read to digest the information!
Have a wonderful week.

Totally fascinating post dear Aquileana and my apologies for arriving so late to read it. I have never had a Tarot card reading and always thought it a bit spooky. I think i should like to take your article with me as notes for a reading. Do you suppose the person would mind? You are busy teaching so much to so many.
I hope this finds you well my friend. Any trips in your future? Perhaps Canada this summer? xo
Thanks so much dear Sue. Thrilled to know that you enjoyed it, my friend. I undersand you: I also used to think that Tarot was a bit creepy… But, then when I cam across some “more professional” tarotists on Youtube, I found it fascinating, mainly given the depictions, and their symbolism. I think it is good if one can learn the meaning of the cards, though…as there are many cheaters out there 😉
Canada!: I´d love to visit your country ❤ … In the meantime, I´ll probably go to Brazil (Northern) which is a real paradise. Probably by May or so. Still not completely sure, but … quite likely. Hugs and enjoy your trip 😀 ⭐
Northern Brazil sounds wonderful and I wish you a lovely time there. We very much hope to get back to South America one day. Hugs back to you dear one.
It is really beautiful. Hopefully I´ll be there by May. ❤ Hugs & welcome back to your homeland
Thanks my dear. It’s chilly but good to be home.
❤ Hugs!
I didn’t know about this ‘storyline’ aspect of the cards. Thanks for the enjoyable quick course 🙂
Thanks so much… Thrilled to know that you enjoyed it… Have a lovely week ahead 🙂
Thank you, Aquileana. There is so much knowledge here and I don’t know much about Tarot. I was “raised” on astrology beginning in 1967, so that’s been my symbolic psychological language. Tarot is powerful (thank you Deborah Gregory and a few other writers). I’m reading a little at a time and taking it in.
I’ve spent the last 6 weeks getting my mother-in-law accepted as a hospice patient and then moving her to a nursing home. I wonder which card I would draw? The Hanged Man standing next to Death? That’s the way this feels. I’ll hang here upside down spending time in a place where people are dying. I’ll do all I can to help her adjust. It now seems she will be released as a hospice patient (her lungs cleared) but she will stay in the nursing home. I hope I will soon have a bit of my own life back again.
Dear Elaine,
I am sorry about your mom and all what surrounds her situation. I have my two grandmothers and one of them is 92 years old, but she is doing very well. She probably acts and behaves as if she was 10 years younger. She is at her place with my grandfather and they are actually in their summer house with my aunt and cousins… Pretty amazing, uh?. However she has had odd episodes, she lose sense of time and she forgets our names. She also has a sort of stroke last year. But… she still does very well.
As yo your question: Yes, those two cards could be related to the situation you define. Although: remember that Death is not always Death. But change… Which also makes sense.
In these hard times I wish the STAR card gives you hope… and peace of mind. Look at it, isnt it beautiful? https://aquileana.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/the-star_tarot.png?w=306&h=306 Sending love & best wishes ❤
So much interesting and new terminology for me here. Maybe it will inspire a story!
Thanks so much dear Raimey…. I´d love to read that eventual story, by the way… So many characters! 😀 Love & best wishes
This is fascinating, but so much to take in! I am afraid I have never believed in this kind of thing, but it is intriguing nevertheless.
Thanks so much dear Fatima… I don´t think the cards will accurately tell me what will happen or why things turned out in a certain way. I do my own readings when I need to sort out any issue. More as personal guidance you know!. 😉 Love & best wishes!. Enjoy your day ❤
I read the post painstakingly and now I want to know more! Never had an idea that tarot cards have such elaborate meanings. Thank you, Aquileana, for posting this one. It’s really intriguing. I never have tried and tested taro cards but now I can sense a rising interest in my mind…. 😀
Thanks so much dear Mani… I am glad that it caught your attention. I´d say: go ahead and get yourself a deck.,… I am sure you´ll enjoy the experience of learning and reading Tarot cards. Love & best wishes. Happy weekend ❤
Grazie mille, cara Silvia. Ti auguro un felice fine settimana… Abbraccio grande 🙂
The artwork on those cards is amazing — really pulls you in like you’re going to the bottom of a well. Also interesting that they were just game pieces for a few hundred years before being used for divination. That is surprising.
Hi Daedalus,
I agree with you. I thought it was surprising and quite odd that the tarot deck was initially used as a game.
I am glad that you enjoyed the post. Part two coming soon. 😉 Sending love
I know. To us, the mystical and somewhat transgressive (from the conventional Christian point of view) associations seem inherent to the images themselves. That’s why it’s hard to picture the pre-Enlightenment lords and ladies playing with them frivolously. If only they knew 🙂
A most accurate comment dear Daedalus… ha!. You are absolutely right. Thank you… Best to you! 🙂
¡Excelente trabajo! ¡Enhorabuena, Aquileana!
Muchísimas gracias, querido Julio. Un abrazo 😀
It all sounds fascinating. A most interesting and informative post about Tarot. I’ve always been curious about Tarot, never had a reading, yet!
Thanks so much dear Marje.. Pleased to know that you found it interesting…. Sending love & wishing you a great weekend 🙂
This is such a valuable resource, Aquileana. Your descriptions are so clear, compelling, and understandable. The progression of the fool’s journey is especially helpful. I found myself reliving the steps of my life as I read.
Thank you for dropping in and for sharing your insights, dear Carol… I agree with you as to the progression of the Fool´s Journey. It resonates with me and my life as well… Glad that you enjoyed the post!. Love & best wishes 😀 ❤
This is a topic that truly fascinates me… and you provide such great and detailed information… it’s a real luck that I found your blog!

Aptly posted….

Thanks Aquileana😊
Hallo. Thank you for your beautiful posts. Peace and love to you and yours.
Thanks so much… I really appreciate your comment… Love & best wishes 😀 😉
It’s fascinating, Aquileana. I’ve had my tarot card reading done and I remember being scared by some of the cards until they were explained to me (eg. The Hanging Man). I hope your new year is off to a great start.
I know right?… I havee feelt the same as to the Death card…. until I learnt that it represented transitions and changes. I´d say that the Tower is so much worse! 😀 I hope that your new year is off to a great start … Thanks so much for the visit and comment, dear Cynthia! 😀 😉 xx
Marvelous again, Aquileana!
You are so right that tarot is not about predictions. How can one predict, when the future is in constant flux?
There are so many complex layers that can be worked into a tarot reading. Or one can keep it simple. To me that’s the beauty of it. One thing I was taught was the importance of one’s own intuition in doing the reading. Yes the “meaning” of the card is important, but so is the personal intuition. Symbols have vastly different meanings for different people, and vary from moment to moment. Also important is the artwork. One of the most helpful things I was taught was to look for a deck that had detailed art on each card, major or minor. For example, something better than a “Seven of Swords” that just showed seven swords on a background.
The art goes hand in hand with the intuition. We might zero-in on a particular detail in the art that speaks strongly.
Thanks so much for this mindful, intelligently written, and useful post. Hugs!
Thanks so much for sharing your accurate thoughts dear Teagan…
I agree with you: We can not predict the future… At all!… But cards might provide guidance, if we know how to read them (some readingscould not resonate with us, that´s treu, though).
Intuition is a very important thing when it comnes to readings: you are right. Sometimes the symbolism is more clear than others. I like to pay attention to the colors and illustrations. Also, we need to see the whole spread. As one card could be read accordingly to another. Hence the meanings could be given by several cards, one in reference to the other. I appreciate the visit, my friend… Love & Hugs 😀
Guidance — absolutely, yes. Again, well done. Have a beautiful weekend, my friend. ❤ & hugs right back.
Hugs back at you… & happy weekend dear Teagan 😀 ❤
Can´t believe it. I own a lot of decks but Raider Waite is the one I use most. Great post! Greetings from Sweden!
Thanks so much… Awesome that you are visiting from Sweden!. I agree with you as to Rider Waite, back to the roots as the saying goes 😀 Happy weekend 😀
Muchas gracias Aquleana. Me encanta descubrir tus articulos e leer te.
Muchas gracias Aquileana ! Bon domingo i Feliz semana para ti tambien ! Besos amiga !
Exactamente, querida Nadia… Un abrazo y besos para tí… Feliz fin de semana 😀
Tu tambien Aquileana ! Besos 🙂
So much information – I had no idea Tarot’s were so complex. Thank you for sharing Aquileana, I always learn a lot from your posts – well written your work is wonderful!
Thanks so much… That really means a lot… Glad that you enjoyed it… Have a great weekend ahead ❤ 🙂
You too Aquileana! Enjoy!
This post is very informative, though I am the type who will run as far away from Tarot cards as possible because they scare me. 🙂
Hi there dear Imelda… I know what you mean. You have to be ready to accept what the cards might reveal… even if they don´t predict outcomes, it could be scary if the reading points out to probloems or… subtly, to bad things.
I appreciate the visit and comment…. Sending love & best wishes D ❤
🙂 You got my reasons right. 🙂

Very interesting and original as always , my dear! I enjoyed and wish you a lot of nice posts! Bye. Kamila
Thanks so much dear Kamila… so glad that you enjoyed it… Hugs 🙂
Very interesting. The last time I seriously used Tarot was to predict whether I would end up with a man who I thought was my “soulmate.” Unfortunately he already had a girlfriend who he said he was leaving. One week the Tarot showed disaster the next happiness because he hadn’t made his mind up! It ended in disaster though. Thanks for all your support with my blog
Tarot readings could contradict themselves at times:L true!… It has happened to me as well… But most times, it could have to do with an eventual disaster, or at least with a very messy situation, emotionally speaqking… Hence when it happens , I tend to look at it as “not consistent”… Waiting could be better than action in that sense and when it happens, I believe… Thanks so much for dropping in and for your comment here, dear Caroline… Love & best wishes 🙂
Reblogged this on colleenchesebro.com and commented:
More on the Tarot – everything you always wanted to know. ❤ Many thanks to dear, Aquileana. ❤
Thanks so much for sharing dear Colleen. You are awesome! ❤ Love & best wishes!
Tarot cards have always been a bit of a mystery to me, and this is why I was interested in them. Part because of the gypsy stories that fascinated me as a kid, always holding a bit of the mystic and magic. Your writing is something else, an amazing introduction to this world, you take it up another level. Wonderful writing, stories and then the photos/description ~ especially the progression of the fool’s journeys. Cheers to a great weekend ahead!
Hi there dear Dalo, Thanks so much for your words here. I am glad that you enjoyed it, my friend. There is so much to ponder and discover when it comes to Tarot!…. I will probably get back into the Fool´s Journey in the next post!… Wishing you a great weekend xx ❤ 🙂
It would be great if you could expand on the Fool’s Journey ~ wishing you a great weekend ahead too Aquileana, take care.
Thanks & likewise dear Dalo! ❤

Thanks for stopping by. I checked out lots of posts, but it seems I have liked them all. Are you still posting on this blog? I was very busy, too, and sometimes one can be way too busy in order to make extra time.
Nevertheless, I am always taken away by the huge work which goes into complex posts like this one. Since my articles also take lots of time to compile I am aware of efforts which go into every single article with numerous images.
Thanks so much for dropping by…. I am not blogging but maybe I’ll come back in the future. I really don’t know…. yes, it takes lots of time and commitment. You are right 😌I hope you are doing well, dear Inese. Wishing you the best… 😘😊
