“Mercury” by Evelyn De Morgan. 1873.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(Roman name: Mercury) was the messenger of the Gods.
It was Hermes´duty to guide the souls of the dead down to the underworld, which is known as a psycho pomp.
Carl Jung often speaks of Hermes as psycho pomp, spiritual friend, or personal guide.
He says: “From the earliest times, Hermes was the psycho pomp of the alchemists, their friend and counselor, who leads them to the goal of their work. He is like a teacher mediating between the stone and the disciple… To others the friend appears in the shape of Christ or Khidr or a visible or invisible guru, or some other personal guide or leader figure”. (Carl Jung, Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious. 1934–1954. Vol.9 Part 1. CW 9I, para. 283).
One of his most famous regular roles was as as God of Crossroads, leader of souls to the river Styx in the underworld, where the boatman Charon would take them to Hades.
He was also portrayed as an emissary and messenger of the gods: an intercessor between mortals and the divine, and conductor of souls into the afterlife. He has been viewed as the protector and patron of herdsmen, thieves, oratory and wit, literature and poetry, athletics and sports, invention and trade for being cunning and full of tricks.
He was also the patron of of luck and revered by gamblers and merchants undertaking new enterprises.
Hermes was son of Zeus and one of the Pleiades, Maia.
He was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. Zeus had impregnated Maia at the dead of night while all other gods slept. When dawn broke amazingly he was born.
Maia wrapped him in swaddling bands, then resting herself, fell fast asleep. Hermes, however, squirmed free and ran off to Thessaly.
This is where Apollo, his brother, grazed his cattle. Hermes stole a number of the herd and drove them back to Greece. He hid them in a small grotto near to the city of Pylos and covered their tracks.
Before returning to the cave he caught a tortoise, killed it and removed its entrails. Using the intestines from a cow stolen from Apollo and the hollow tortoise shell, he made the first lyre.
When he reached the cave he wrapped himself back into the swaddling bands.
When Apollo realized he had been robbed he protested to Maia that it had been Hermes who had taken his cattle. Maia looked to Hermes and said it could not be, as he is still wrapped in swaddling bands. Zeus the all powerful intervened saying he had been watching and Hermes should return the cattle to Apollo. As the argument went on, Hermes began to play his lyre.
The sweet music enchanted Apollo, and he offered Hermes to keep the cattle in exchange for the lyre. Apollo later became the grand master of the instrument, and it also became one of his symbols.
Hermes was also known as something of a trickster, stealing at one time or another Poseidon’s trident, Artemis’ arrows, and Aphrodite’s girdle.
Hermes appears in Homer´s Iliad. He is most often described by Homer as ‘Hermes the guide, slayer of Argos’ and ‘Hermes the kindly’.
In Homer´s Odyssey, Hermes helps Odysseus, especially on his long return voyage to Ithaca.
Another hero helped by the god was Perseus. Hermes gave him an unbreakable sword and guided him to were the Gorgon Medusa was.
Hermes is usually depicted with a broad-brimmed hat or a winged cap, winged sandals and the heralds staff (kerykeion in Greek, or Caduceus in Latin).
He was often shown as a shaft with two white ribbons, although later they were represented by serpents intertwined in a figure of eight shape, and the shaft often had wings attached.
Symbols of Hermes were the turtle, the stork, the rooster, the goat, the number four.
Originally Hermes was a phallic god, being attached to fertility and good fortune, and also a patron of roads and boundaries. It is also possible that since the beginning he has been a deity with shamanic attributes linked to divination, reconciliation, magic, sacrifices, and initiation and contact with other planes of existence, a role of mediator between the worlds of the visible and invisible.
As to Hermes Trismegistus, he may be a representation of the syncretic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.
In Hellenistic Egypt, the Greeks recognised the congruence of their god Hermes with Thoth, egyptian God of Knowledge.
Hence, the two gods were worshipped as one in what had been the Temple of Thoth in Khemnu, which the Greeks called Hermopolis.
There is still another Egyptian parallel, specifically, in the figure of Anubis. In classical mythology, Hermanubis was a god who combined Hermes with Anubis. Hermes and Anubis’s similar responsibilities (they were both conductors of souls) led to the god Hermanubis.
Icons of Hermes were displayed in front of houses and where roads intersect. He was seen as guiding people in transition.
Hermes was worshiped throughout Greece, especially in Arcadia, and festivals in his honor were called Hermoea.

► “My Poem Tempus Fugit at La Poesía no Muerde”
[December 10th, 2015].~
I am very glad to tell my readers that my poem “Tempus Fugit” has been featured at “La Poesía no Muerde”. I initially wrote the poem in Spanish, based in an image called “Il tempo che passa e il tempo che resiste”, provided by Angela Caporaso (Caserta – Italy) so I am attaching the image, the poem in Spanish and its translation to English…
“La Poesía no Muerde” is a blog hosted by Hélène Laurent. It is a collective blog in spanish which prompts are usually triggered by images that might lead to poems or poems that once published are waiting to be illustrated with photographs or creative images, such as collages or digital creations… With that being said, I hope that you take a peek and subscribe if you enjoy it, which I am sure you will…
As to the poem I was making reference to, you can check out the original post here. It is also included in La Poesía no Muerde, fourth literary magazine, page 42.

►Last but not Least: Four Awards:
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you very much to Millie Thom from the namesake blog, Irena from Books and Hot Tea, Yemie from Straight from the Heart and Luis López from ByLuis7 for nominating me for an Epic Awesomeness Award, a Dragon’s Loyalty Award a Sisterhood Of The World Bloggers Award and a Bloguera con Buen Rollo Award, respectively… Please make sure to check out these blogs and follow them, if you haven´t already done so…

♠Rules for the Epic Awesomeness Award:
•Display the award on your blog.
•Announce your win with a post and link the blogger who nominated you.
•Present at least 7 deserving bloggers with the award.
•Link your awardees in the post.
•Write about the indirect questions above… just let it flow…
Question 1→You are awesome; tell us why… what does awesome mean to you?…
Awesome… I guess it means extremely good… But, on the other hand, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as and adjective, which implies that something or someone causes feelings of fear and wonder: causing feelings of awe.
I was think of Immanuel Kant… In his book, “Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime” (1764), Immanuel Kant describes the feeling of the sublime and the feeling of the beautiful.
Some of his examples of feelings of the beautiful are the sight of flower beds, grazing flocks, and daylight.
As to Kant, they “occasion a pleasant sensation but one that is joyous and smiling”.
Feelings of the sublime are the result of seeing mountain peaks, raging storms, and night. These ones, according to Kant, “arouse enjoyment but with horror”. Kant said that Beauty and the Sublime can be joined or alternated…
So, I am that “awesomeness” could be a sort of dual feeling at times… Isn’t idealization or admiration a sort of sublimation?. … Don´t we experience a sort of shivering dizziness when we come across something/someone awesome after all?.
Question 2→You are my friend; tell us about other blogger friends …
I have met extraordinary bloggers and I felt a sort of deep connection with many of them… Even when Virtuality would seem a veiled reality, at times… I´d rather call it an alternative Reality, at least, using as measurement parameter, our Reality … I find so many beautiful posts, I learn every single day something new due to my blogger friends… For the record, I am now thinking that Twitter is also a great tool. I believe that it is a very efficient way to catch up with blogs you really like and to do so almost daily…
My seven nominees for the Epic Awesomeness Award are: 1. Jeri Walker #Editor 2. Life as we See It 3. Straight from the Heart 4. House of Heart 5. A Chaos Fairy Realm 6 Books and Hot Tea 7. A Writer’s Path.

•Display the award on your blog.
•Announce your win with a post and link the blogger who nominated you.
•Present 6 deserving bloggers with the award.
•Link your awardees in the post.

→The 7 facts about me are…
1. I am a scorpion in the horoscope and was born one day before my mom, but, needless to say, a few decades after her… 2. I’m very superstitious. 3. I am extremely cynical when arguing with someone… I usually know how to leave my opponent speechless… 4. I love cats, I not only speak to them, but I speak with them 5. I hate ignorance by conviction 6. Once I´ve started a series on Netflix I enjoy, I seldom set it aside before having completely finished it. 7. I believe in God, despite my rational faith in the Theory of Evolution.
My six nominees for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award are: 1. Shehanne Moore 2. ByLuis7 3. Scribble and Scrawl 4. Millie Thom 5. Micheline’s Blog 6. Scattered Thoughts

1.What’s your life’s philosophy? I will mention three principles, concerning this question. a. Be tolerant… your opinion is just a personal, thus relative, standpoint. b. Be Patient. Try to get the whole picture, before jumping in… c. Give people the benefit of the doubt, until all doubts are vanished.
2.One word that best describes you would be?… Steadfast.
3.What’s the one best thing for you about being female, or if being the case male?… Honestly, I believe that women are more gracious and gorgeous, and our sexuality is an endless driving loop … Plus we don´t have to shave our faces each morning.
4.Who’s that one person, (could be your regular boy/girl next door or a celebrity crush or a pet or even a stuffed toy) you’d really fancy being marooned with for three whole days and nights on a deserted island and why?... I won´t put down details here regarding my personal life… To avoid awkwardness, I´ll carry the stuffed toy… *Successful deterrent maneuver*.
5.What would you say was the craziest, nuttiest thing you’ve ever found yourself doing?… Any of the stuff I might do if I ever get more than I can take… *Free interpretation*.
My seven nominees for the Sisterhood Of The World Bloggers Award are: 1. Brittney Sahin 2. People Forward 3. Claudia Moss 4. Course of Mirrors 5. Tails Around the Ranch 6. Souldier Girl 7. The Genealogy of Style

•Link your awardees in the post.
•Answer to the following questions below.
1.How frequently do you post on your blog?. Once in three weeks or once a month…
2. Was it hard for you to choose the name of your blog?. Not that much… I knew I wanted to include Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and then the hero Achilles popped up… Aquileana is a sort of Hybrid resulting of their juxtaposition.
3. Please, recommend me a book to read and review. Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami.
4. Please, recommend me a song. This Is The Life –and many others- by Amy Macdonald.

6. Do you share your posts on Social Media?. Yes, I do. On Twitter, Google Plus and Pinterest.

My six nominees for the Bloguera con Buen Rollo Award are: 1. My Space in the Immense Universe 2. Postcards from Kerry 3. Travels with Choppy 4. Fatima Saysell 5. Sherrie Miranda 6. Lorna´s Voice.

Oh my goodness, Hermes has my head spinning as he appears to be a complete contradiction. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a fabulous 2016! 😉
Dear Joanne… you are quite right. Hermes seems contradictory and polifacetic … I guess that could be related to the fact that there are so many different meanings when it comes to what he represents…
Thanks so much for your comment! Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Joanne x
I hop you enjoyed your Christmas, dear Eve… Happy New Year to you! All my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀

Charlotte
Hi there, dear Charlotte… Scorpios rule… 😀
Oh, yes… Netflix and their equivalents might be addictive at times… I am glad we share the same momentum when it comes to particular series… I am guessing it would imply that we like to see things as a complete whole, now that I am thinking it…
Thanks a lot for your beautiful comment!. 🙂 I am pleased to know that you liked the post… Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
I truly enjoy your descriptions of these Gods and there origins. I read frequently about Ancient Egypt and appreciate the associations of Greek to Egyptian deities. Congrats on “Tempus Fugit” being featured. It’s exhilarating when a piece of art so personal as poetry is recognized.
Hi Rob… thanks so much for your kind comment and your thoughts concerning Hermes. I also enjoyed to learn about Hermes´connection with the Egyptian deities.
I am pleased to know that you liked the post and my poem… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Whatever our beliefs, it’s comforting to have a personal messenger. Mine is Mother Nature. Enjoyed your attention to details. You always have a heartfelt approach.

Mother Nature is certainly a powerful messenger, as it connects us to our roots … good choice. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2016. Aquileana 😀
My best to you, and enjoy the holidays.
If only everyone in the world practiced your life’s philosophy. What a peaceful and harmonious world this would be!
I think little bit more tolerance would definitely make a huge difference nowadays… Thanks so much dear Carrie. Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
The same to you!

Thank you very much dear Cindy 💫 I much appreciate your words. Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
Aquileana, your posts are truly awesome, and you deserve the award for Epc Awesomeness (spelled properly – not as it is on the award logo! Lol) I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this post about Hermes, although, I am ashamed to admit, I had never linked Hermes with any of the other gods you mentioned, including Mercury, Annubis, or even Hermananubis. Hermes’ story is fascinating, from his conception and birth and stealing of Apollos cattle to his role as messenger of the gods (plus all the other roles he had!). Thank you for this really informative post. As always, I have learned a great deal by reading it. 🙂
Thank you so much for accepting the award, Aqileana. I enjoyed reading your
look at the word Awesomeness!
Many, many thanks also for nominating me for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award. It isn’t one I’ve heard of before, and I’ll accept your nomination with pleasure. 😀
Good morning form here dear Millie…
Thanks so much for your words… the award was a good one and I enjoyed answering to the questions. I appreciate the nomination. and I am glad that you´ll accept mine too..
Oh and nevermind about not knowing the gods linked to Hermes… I didn’t know about the egyptians equivalents or, better said greek egyptians hybrids either.
I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed the account, concerning Hermes.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and yours. Love, Aquileana 🎄
I enjoy every post you do tremendously! They’re so very thorough, and I’ve learned a lot from them.

It is my pleasure… I truly like to spread your words, my friend… And, You´ll learn more as time goes by… But it is not that difficult mind you… WordPress is harder, I think… Love and best wishes. Aquileana ★🌟
Interesting and fascinating post, dear Aquileana and Congratulations on your awards ❤

Thank you very much dear Marina. Merry Christmas and happy new year.. Hugs, Aquileana 🎄
🙂
Hermes is one of my favorites because I am fascinated by transitions and transformations. Thanks for helping me to learn more about him.
He is also one of my favorite Gods… you are right as to his transitions and transformations… Plus I like the fact that he is almost as polifacetic as Apollo… they both represent many different and at times even opposite things… Merry Christmas and happy new year, dear Georgia. Aquileana 🎄
Ernst
Thank you very much for your words. 🙂 I am really pleased to know that you liked the post…
Merry Christmas and happy new year, dear Ernst. Aquileana 🎄
I remember Hermes from the Odyssey but I didn’t realize he had so many other gifts and responsibilities. Nice to learn a little more about you! Happy Holidays and see you next year!
Hi Jan.. there are many layers and characteristics related to Hermes… I also learned many new facts as I did the research for this post… thanks so much for your words..Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Epic awesomeness is also an appropriate description for your scintillating Hermes biography and the most excellent Tempus Fugit.
Feliz Navidad! 🙂

Hi dear Yemie…
Thanks so much for the nomination… You now know why I have been quite elusive when it comes to my answers.. wink
It was fun to do so though…
Sending you much love. .Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Aquileana 🎄
Your posts are always so beautiful, thoughtful, and information-packed. I’m so glad I came across your blog. I consistently look forward to your mythology-infused posts each month. 🙂 Happy Holidays, my friend. ❤ ❤
Dear Eva… thanks so much for your words, coming from you they mean even more… I am looking forward to more blogger experiences together and many good readings… Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
You’re very welcome! It’s my pleasure.
As do I! 🙂 2016 will be yet another wonderful and poetic year. ❤
The same to you! *hugs*
I bet it will… and I´d love you to come again for a feature, even more considering that you have released a new book…Sending you love and all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
I would be honored! 🙂 I’ll let you know when it’s on Amazon.
By the way, the new book is full of Greek stuff. For example: The Kingdom of Hrissa (hrissa =’gold’ in Greek) and The Kingdom of Asimi (asimi = ‘silver’ in Greek). And there are several other names/terms that are inspired directly by the Greek language and even some mythology.
Much love! ❤
How neat.. I will purchase it when it is out… but I gotta tell you in advance that I might take me a lot of time to finish the reading… haha.
Yes, please, do let me know and we will schedule a guest post and include a poem written by you on the specific mythological subject if you are in…
Hugs. Aquileana 🌟.-
How thoughtful. Thank you very much! That’s no problem. You can take all the time you need. Luckily, Book 1 is only 30,000 words.
Okay, I appreciate the opportunity!
🙂
We´ll be working on it my friend… It will be a pleasure… xoxo. Aquileana 🌞‼️
Aquileana,
I wasn’t sure how to contact you about that guest post, so I figured I’d get back to you in these comments. Perhaps you can e-mail me to discuss this further? evax22[at]gmail[dot]com
Without the “at” and “dot” written out, of course. I’m trying to avoid anything that would be marked as spam by WordPress.
Dear Eva… I will email you of course and gotcha concerning the dot and at … But I am having two posts already scheduled, both guest posts— so I hope you are okay about doing it in February—
the book was already released, wasn’t it… In the meantime, You can count on me over Twitter to spread the word out,… I wil drop by your blog soon, probably tomorrow. And will also purchase it, of course…
It is so hot over here, I haven´t really turned on the computer but just used the Ipad… so I am quite behind … I am catching up with all that tomorrow, at least, if not, by wednesday…
Let me know if february works well for you here, though, that way we try to fix a schedule which works for both of us… Sending love. Aquileana 💫
Of course I’m okay with February. I’m just grateful you’re willing to do this! 🙂 I’m a very patient person.
And yes, the release just happened today! 😀
Send some heat my way. It’s cold and windy here. Lol.
Okay, gal.. awesome, then… Huge congrats on the release… I will purchase it next time I am in your blog, meaning probably tomorrow… Can´t wait to take a peek on those lines… Love and yes, a bit of fresh air would work fine… anyway, I am enjoying the pool, so can´t complain too much— See you on your blog… Love. Aquileana ✨
Thank you!! 🙂 No worries. There’s no rush. I appreciate you!
See you around, my friend. ❤
I appreciate you too, dear Eva… I will be there very soon… Best to you. Aquileana 😀

What a great post! Information on Hermes was fascinating (I especially like the idea of the intercessor) Your poem is amazing, and we learned more about you. So cool.
Dear Nico… thanks so much .. ) I am really pleased to know that you liked the mythological section and the poem as well… best wishes. Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
Merry Christmas Aquileana! And Happy New Year!
You greatly expanded my scant knowledge of Hermes. Plus it’s always great to learn more about you via blogging awards. I too would not want to be a man due to the daily face shaving, and I too talk with my cat…
Certain special Scorpios have many gifts, among which we can mention the ability to communicate with cats 🙂 … Thanks so much for your words, dear Jeri… Merry Christmas and happy New Year. All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
I’d not heard of Hermanubis before. That’s a neat merger.
I agree… Hermanubis is one of the best hybrids I have ever known about…
Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂
You have one of the most thorough blogs around. I love mythology and find many new information when I read your posts. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for your words dear Poet Rummager…. I am beyond appreciative… it is cool to meet you and I am glad I came across your poetry blog, which I truly like. Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Aquileana 🙂

Also consider the adjective ‘hermetic’, meaning: Being of, or relating to, an ancient occult tradition encompassing alchemy, astrology, and theosophy.esoteric; cryptic. According to Google Dictionary.
Well stated … your comment is much accurate… Thank you very much for the feedback.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀

Wish you happy holidays and a wonderful year ahead… ❤
Hello there dear Maniparna… Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment!. I truly appreciate it.
Merry Christmas. Sending best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Thanks, dear…a very merry Christmas to you… 🙂
I like the God Hermes quite a lot, he seem to have been helpful in many ways, despite the fact that he was a little be of a trickser and caught, for example, a tortoise, killed it and removed its entrails. Using the intestines from a cow stolen from Apollo and from the hollow tortoise shell, he made the first lyre.
Your poem is beautiful and I especially like the words: time flows and resists, this ambivalence is in our life itself, like good and bad.
Thank you very much Aquileana for all your kind words and interesting post throughout the year and I also wish you all the best for the upcoming festivities and the New Year. Cari saluti Martina
Dear Martina… thanks so much for your comment… you are right as to hermes, he has a double face, so to speak… I guess his tricky side could be related to being bold somehow, something which was considered a virtue among greek gods and goddesses.
Also I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed the poem and yes, I feel it tries to depict time ambivalence and present and past could get mingled at times, even more if Love is involved
It has been a pleasure to connect with you this year… And I am looking forward to many good posts and blogger friendship ahead.
Merry Christmas and all my best wishes for 2016. Aquileana 🎄
Thank you very much, dear friend, for your kind explanation about the heros’ virtues, which I didn’t know. Maybe I didn’t read your post carefully enough!! Un grande abbraccio.:) Martina
Grazie amica… Buon natale. Abbraccio per te. Aquileana 🌟

I very much like Mercury Aquileana. I like the idea of being a guide. We all need one don’t we. I very much like the jungian side of your post. Fascinating 🙂

Thank you very much dear Michelle. I am beyond appreciative to read your words concerning the post and I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the reading.
Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Well, I really like Hermes, and this is a wonderful post! Stealing his brothers cattle seems okay to me. My sister & I used to steal each others clothes. I see now we are close to the Gods in our earthly ways! Your poem is fantastic. You are so very talented dear Amailia!
Of course I have to say you are amazing cute in a Santa hat! LOL! ⭐ ⭐
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR, to you!
I can see the analogy and makes much sense to me… I have two brothers so I haven´t gotten the chance to go through similar experiences… And yet, I used to steal my brother Martín his Playmobil… I had a fascination towards those little guys…
I am beyond appreciative to read your words concerning my poem… Thanks my friend. A pleasure to have you here… Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Firstly let me apologise for taking so long to get here today and thank you, wonderful lady for thinking of me for an award. Secondly, what a post. …Oh and I see Bernard has been here too with a comment. Mercury has always interested me as a ‘character’ because of this biz of messenger which people think is so simple. Is it really? Fourthly, there’s your wonderful images. Lastly but not least, there’s the poem. Time flies. But not when I read words like these x
Hi there dear She… no worries about rushes or anything like that… I always take my time, so all is great for me.
Bernard the french poet, oh yes, he is un ami aussi … 😀
I am very pleased to know that you liked the post… Hermes AKA Mercury is such an interesting and polifacetic God…
Also, I appreciate your feedback and thoughts as to the poem… coming from you, it means a lot to me. Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄

Doux bisous
Salut chère Fanfan… merci de me rendre visite, mon amie… joyeux noël et tout le meilleur pour 2016… bonne année. Bisous. Aquileana 🎇 ~~
I like the sound of Hermes. He gives the impression of being a deity with a sense of humour, but best of all I love the fact that he is the God of Roads and Boundaries as my passion is travelling. Thank you so much for this, Aquileana. I must get a picture of him for our motorhome. Thank you also for my nomination for Bloguera con buen rollo.: it’s put a smile on my face! :-). We’re on the road again, but I’ll look into it when we stop in Alsace, as we’ll be there for a few days for Christmas. Feliz Navidad y Prosperous Año Nuevo. ❤ On 17 Dec 2015 18:16, "La Audacia de Aquiles" wrote:

Dear Fatima… a note on a related goddess… Hecate was considered the goddess of Crossroads and paths… I´d say that she could be Hermes´female equivalent keeping in mind what you pointed out above…
You should definitely get him on your motorhome, even more considering he was also said to provide Good Fortune…
You are so lucky to travel as often as you do… Enjoy it… Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Thank you, Aquileana. I will look into it when I get back home. Happy New Year
Carl Jung always adds such a deep dimension to symbols. Congratulations on having your poem published! And finally: I wish you a wonderful holiday and continued inspiration for your marvelous blog, Aquileana. Thank you for being such a kind and luminous presence in the blogosphere. –Julie
Thank you very much for your words as I truly appreciate them, dear Julie… You are also an inspiration to me … besides, you are a loyal reader… It´s been a while since we first met…
Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Is there a patron of writers? I think we’ve all adopted the Muses, but is there one more in tune with our struggles?
Hi dear Jacqui… Apollo was sometimes known as the God of Poets… Personally, I have been always fascineted by Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom.
Thanks for dropping by. . Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Funny thin, now that I’ve been reading your blog, I feel more versed in the Greek gods and find myself including them in conversation. I’ve even quoted you! Amazing how a little bit of knowledge so enriches our lives.
You said you had quoted me … wow… I am humbled, dear Jacqui… your words mean a lot to me… Sending love and all my best wishes for 2016. Aquileana ✨☺️
Kudos for you my dear Aquileana! Great post as always.

Thank you very much dear Danaiana. Merry Christmas. All the best to you in 2016!, Aquileana 😀
This is the second reference to Hermes I’ve had today … but I can’t recall the first one. .. (Sad, but true). Merry Christmas to you … Keep smiling … and I request your presence at my holiday party this weekend. 🙂
Thanks a lot for your words dear Frank… I appreciate them … By the way the holiday party was awesome… I was delighted with my random gift.
Merry Christmas. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
The artwork and information you share is wonderful, and for me educational. I took Mythology my first year of High School (age 14) I loved the stories, but didn’t do well with family trees, and tests. 😦 Your posts are what I had hoped that class would have been all those years ago; great stories, with back stories, and history and no TESTS! 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and your family! xx
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!. when it comes to gods and goddesses, their genealogy could be complex and mingled too… I also feel that at times… I am really glad to know that my posts might help you clarify certain things you have already learnt… Merry Christmas. All the best to you and your in 2016!, Aquileana 😀
Great post & thank you for the nomination 🙂
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment! Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Love. Aquileana 🎄

Thank you very much dear Phil 💫✨🌟 Oh and I finally managed to post my comment on your cool blog … ⭐
Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Love. Aquileana 🎄
Such a naughty baby : )
Who doesn’t like Hermes? He is a fun god! And this was a fun post! Thank you as always, Aquileana : ) The merriest of Christmases to you.
❤
Dear Outlier Babe… I definitely like Hermes… he has so many different meanings when it comes to what he represents… In this way, I´d say that he is one of the most polifacetic gods, alongside Apollo.
Thank you very much. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
HI Aquileana, I like the way in which you introduce your readers to the characters from Greek mythology, The question that comes to my mind is that in spite of being a trickster, who stole something or the other from different gods, why is Hermes associated with good fortune? 🙂
Wish you a merry Christmas.
Dear Somali… It is a good question… I guess it could be related with his guiding side, which also links him to Hades and Hecate, being the last one the Goddess of Crossroads and also associated with Luck and good Fortune-
I will probably write a new post about this darker side of the messenger of Gods… thanks for your question as it was a valuable contribution
All my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Thank you Aquileana. That’s an interesting topic to explore. In fact, in Indian mythology, too the dark sides of some Gods finds mention.
Thanks for the contribution… I love comparative mythology… sending love. Aquileana 🎇 ~~

Dearest Teagan… those words mean so much to me… you are a writer I admire in case you still didn’t know it and many of your Cooper, the Alchemist and the Lady in Trousers installments were the best startup to my day ahead.
I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed the posts, poem… and, lastly the Santa pic…
Sending hugs… Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄

Hello Santa 😀
Hermes/Mercury was the cap badge I wore for 15 years in the British Army – Royal Corps of Signals.

I wish the same for you my friend! 🙂 ❤
Happy Holidays. Great post.
The winged helmet of Hermes worked its way into iconic comic book culture. Jay Garrick, the original Flash wore it and in his earliest renderings also had stylized wings on his boots in honour of Mercury. The character has been introduced in the the recent season of the Flash television show and the helmet makes an early appearance.

This is so interesting… I will be checking it out in depth soon… Thanks so much for the link.

I can see why Hermes and Anubis would have been combined. They both have cat like qualities of being endearing even when being naughty. Wonderful picture of you in a Santa hat. Happy Holidays!! XOXO
You are quite right as to that hybrid character, resulting from Hermes and Anubis combination, dear Bren..
Sending love and virtual hugs. Merry Christmas. Aquileana 🎄

Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you for 2016. Hugs. Aquileana 🎄
I know very little about Hermes, other than his role as messenger and the incident with Apollo’s cattle, so I found this post a very interesting read. 🙂 Merry Christmas.
Thank you very much… I am really pleased to know that you liked the post and learnt new facts on Hermes…
Merry Christmas and happy new year. Aquileana 🎄
[…] I’ve been nominated for the Epic Awesomness Award by wonderful Aquileana (see her post HERE). You should all click on the link and visit her blog, especially if you’re interested in […]
Hi Aquileana, wish you a very happy Christmas and happy holidays… Hugs 🎅🎄🎁
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and yours. Aquileana 🎄
I’m so glad you mentioned Hermanubis, the god who combined Hermes with Anubis as they were both conductors of souls. Congrats on your poem too, I haven’t been able to write anything!! Have a Merry Christmas!
Hi María… thanks so much … i am pleased to know that you enjoyed the post and wish you spend a beautiful Christmas with your family… By the way, check out your spam folder as I think my comment on your newest post ended up there, if not awaiting moderation… Best wishes to you. Aquileana 🍒

Thanks a lot for your words dear Cybele. Merry Christmas and happy new year. Aquileana 🎄
and you!
Thank you for another informative blog, dear Aquileana! One of my favorite reads are the books about the Great Consecrated, like Hermes Trismegistus, about secret Mysteries, Masonic tradition etc. It was a pleasure to read your blog, and as always your selection of illustrations is exquisite.
I wish you happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
With love, Inese
Dear Inese.
Thank you very much for your comment… There is indeed a link between Hermes and mystery religions… Thanks for highlighting that point as much times he is merely considered a messenger of gods… which would be his brighter side…
On Another point, check out my comments on your last post… you´ll have to delete one of those… as one was posted before time… Ops…
Merry Christmas. Love and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
I keep both comments, because I replied to both 🙂
Hermes and Orpheus created a vast occult tradition, together with the Egyptian Gods. I am certain that Hermes was a messenger of God indeed. He was close to the ordinary people, and his messages relate to the Lesser Mysteries available to all of us.
Thank you again for your interesting posts!
Inese
Your posts are always fantastic. All your care and dedication are always evident. It has been a great pleasure finding your blog this past year. Your unwavering support of others is what makes your blog so beautifully successful. Of course your writing is of the highest quality and leaves the reader feeling better for it.
You are an educator and a true inspiration. Like Hermes, you are a herald of meaningful information.
May you enjoy your holidays with your family and love ones.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!. I am very pleased to connect with you on Blogs and know for sure that you´ll always have my support…
I truly appreciate your words and knowing that my posts achieve in their aims make me happy-
Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you and yours. Aquileana 🎄
Ah, another Scorpio. (Not surprising considering what and how you blog/write. Excellent, of course. Scorpio would have no less).
Always thought Mercury/Hermes was a cool messenger – and guide during transitions…having traveled so much, he would have seen /absorbed a great deal). Perhaps he will be willing to spread your wise philosophy of life.
Would bring about a new age, for sure.
(And wings on feet beat hoverboards without a doubt)
Merry Christmas and may wings of peace find you and yours this season
It is interesting that you mention that Mercury/Hermes, as a messenger would bring about a new age, for sure.
Carl Jung who was very interested in this God, gave him a primordial role as a psycho pomp, spiritual friend, or personal guide… And called him “the teacher mediating between the stone and the disciple” (Carl Jung, CW 9I, para. 283) …
I am then thinking that his expectation could probably fit your wishes, so to speak…Thanks for sharing your wisdom, dear Philosophermouseofthehedge.
Merry Christmas and all my best wishes to you. Aquileana 🎄
Quite familiar with Jung. Funny how pieces go together – although flung far and wide.
Cheers and Merry on!
Merci beaucoup, cher Georges. Joyeux noël et gros bisous. Aquileana 😊
It’s been a real pleasure to learn more about the deep and mysterious world of Greek Mythology through your writing dear Aquileana! Wishing you a happy holiday season, and look forward to another great year ahead ❤

Sending love and wishing you the best for the upcoming year, my friend…. xo Aquileana
My dear friend Amalia I wanted to say Happy Holidays and thank you for all of your support. It is always hard to find posts I have not seen and it is a challenge. I think I have a lot of posts for such a short time. I hope you have a Happy and Healthy Holidays and New Years:)
Dear Paul… thanks so much for your words and support this year… Yes, I think you have done a very good work so far concerning your blog…
I am looking forward to your posts and our exchanges next year… happy 2016 ahead. Aquileana 💫
Thank you for your words. I have upped my game a lot from September and have done decent, although some say a lot better. I guess I am modest but it is cool to going back to your old posts and seeing completely different things but your posts must take a good while to complete between the artwork and history pasted in it is tremendous. Happy Holidays and I look forward to seeing more of you:)
Dear Paul… yes my approaches at to blogging have changed … I post less and do so in English… my posts take me time, you are quite right… and that´s why I post one post per month or maybe one in three weeks… But it is worth it… I love blogging and have made so many great connections here…
You are doing a very good work and you´ll do even better next year… Sending love and best wishes. Aquileana 🌟
Thank you for that. If I had to guess I figure you speak 3 languages at least? I do not think I ever saw where you live but I think I read you moved around a lot or I am merely piecing that from your eclectic posts and styles and being and varied as you are.:)
I am more about one thing, now … yes… I have many interests though, but like to focus in less things, you know… I speak English as a second language. I learned French in High School and get along with it quite well too. But Spanish, obviously… and English are my strengths…
Sending love. Aquileana ☀️🌹
I had 5 years French myself in HS but barely use it. As a kid I worked for my grandfather and learned Spanish but haven’t used it in a long time. My ex is Kenyan so I got introduced to Swahili and Kikuyu and she taught me some German. I started off about one thing and evolved as I had forgotten strengths and I like to invent my own things. 🙂
How neat… I´d love to learn German, but it is so difficult… I guess I´d choose Italian instead as it is quite similar to Spanish and I have italian roots.. my last name Pedemonte is Italian…
I also like to invent new things, to write my own thoughts as to general topics and to express myself through poetry… and yet, I am fully interested in the classic and love greek mythology… love, Aquileana 🌹
I am half Italian myself but only my great grand parents spoke it. I loved mythology and philosophy in College. I would write really long papers on them but that was so long ago but I know and/or remember the bigger names and stories. I had hidden free speech, imagery poetry, story boarding and had never done a haiku or an acrostic let alone a double before October. Well one Acrostic in September.
Italian rule… ha…
I´d love to read your poems or flash fictions… please do post fom time to time… I´ll spread them on Twitter, for sure. xo. Aquileana 🌟
I would have to re learn the other languages. You have read my poems I am pretty sure. I have them easy to find except my poetry roll is immense but I have many in song sections, which gives them a 5th category. Changing languages I will look into:) If you have not seen my Haikus or acrostics you will find them easily in my categories and my song ones I do a sort of role play storyboard going as either the protagonist or antagonist depending on the song I have a decent roll of them. I do have a few Adult themed ones that got in there bc of the wordings.
I think I have read only one… anyhow, I´ll make sure to find them on your blog among categories… or, if I don´t, will keep an eye in your newest posts too… I am leaving you from now as will go eat something… talk soon anytime. Aquileana 😀

I will be checking it out all soon, dear Paul.. can´t wait… Love and best wishes. Aquileana 🌟-.
I hope you like them I wrote today 3 of I think my best, maybe 4. I sometimes get locked in.:)
Hi Paul… I much enjoyed the reading and looking forward to reading more of your poems… Love. Aquileana 🙂
Thank you so much:)
Ps … check out this blog… I love it and could relate a lot http://openyoureyes145.wordpress.com/
I understand that it is a version and adding to aabba poetry and then made more advanced per stanza very cool.
So… if you even have the technical skills, what are you waiting for… LOL…
Aquileana 🍒
The aabba I want to add. I at times roll out 5-6 posts in 10-15 minutes and change styles. but I have pinched nerves in both elbows slowing me down a bit and other things. I have a strong desire to go through many different poetry forms and find a good way to do the aabba one and then change it and a couple of other styles. I used to just write free verse like 30 years ago and had at most imagery and shapes to go along.
Feliz Navidad, mi querida. Hasta el año próximo, que arribará con la magia que seamos capaces de otorgarle.

Narada shares most of the traits with Hermes. Narada was one of the mind-born (manasaputra) sons of Brahma, when Brahma started creating by the power of his thought when there was only darkness. Narada can travel through all the worlds at the speed of thought and he is known as trickster sage who pulls pranks between gods and “demons”. 🙂
Hi Hobbye… this is such a remarkable analogy concerning Hermes… Thanks so much for telling me about Narada… I much appreciate the comment .
All the best to you for 2016. Aquileana 😀

Hola Aquileana,
Qué tal ?… Hermes es el dios muy simpático.
Enough of Spanish! 🙂 Truly he is a most likable god, isn’t he? A master of trickery, a swift messenger, a protector of homes, shepherds and travellers, a conductor of souls, the inventor of the lyre. I love the story how he invented the lyre and then gave it to Apollo, his brother. And I wouldn’t mind borrowing his winged sandals and winged hat, occasionally, when my old bones would rather rest than move!!!
My old bones bring me to your beautiful and poignant poem. In my old age time seems to fly by so much faster. So make sure to live your dreams while you’re young; do not postpone any projects for your retirement, as you might not have the energy or be in good health to bring them to fruition.
Thank you so much, dear Aquileana, for yet another fascinating post. I hope you had a lovely Christmas and I wish you the very best in the New Year. Hugs ❤ Irina

Mi querida A. 🙂
Hermes me trae a tu encuentro.
Te quiero A. 🙂 😛 ¡Feliz 2016!
V.
Sos indispensable.
A tu salud, mi niña. V. 😎
Happy new year!
Thank you so much. Sending you all my best wishes for a great 2016. Happy New Year… Aquileana 🍒☀️

Last but I’m sure not least – may the wings of Hermes guide you to ever increasing abundance Aquileana in 2016 and the years to come. Thank you for all your beautiful posts in 2015 and for this one of Hermes, the winged messenger.

Buon anno cara amica Aquileana 🙂
Aquileana Enjoyed learning more about Hermes and let me say I have enjoyed this year of greek myths and it looks like so many others have to. Happy New Year to you. All the best for 2016. May it be bright and cheerful.
Kath.
Hi there dear Kath, Thanks You very much for your words here…. It is always a pleasure to read your feedback and I am very pleased to know that You liked the post… Sending You Love and best wishes for a great 2016 ahead. Aquileana ⭐️💫
Happy New Year! Although I love your gallery and the legends behind the greats, can I just say, I kept thinking of the Hermes handbags the entire time I was reading this. LOL. Poor Hermes has had his myth usurped by a design house.
Haha 😂 I know What You mean, those little details that catch the whole story…
Thanks so much for dropping by, dear Renee… I hope You have a great 2016 ahead. Love and best wishes. Aquileana ⭐️
Reblogged this on Being Southern Somewhere Else and commented:
I loved her exploration of Hermes, with its classical underpinnings and Jungian high notes. Messenger of the gods, friend and guide of seekers, and familiar protector of the dead on their way to the riverbank and the ferryman. His role as God of the crossroads was no mean posting, either.
A wonderful piece, as always.
Hi there dear Erin, thanks so much for reblogging and for sharing your thoughts here… there are many layers when it comes to Hermes and his meaning among Greek Gods… Jung tend to highlight his dark side, if you will… I found his interpretations very interesting… I am very pleased to know that you enjoyed it…
Wishing you a great 2016 ahead… Much success and happiness to you… Love and all the best. Aquileana 🌟
Happy New Year! A prosperous New Year to you.
Happy New Year… I hope you achive many goals… love and best wishes. Aquileana 🙂
Another fascinating post ~ and I think it would be great to hang around Hermes, a bit dangerous as he is a trickster, but definitely a lot of fun ~ chasing women, “the more gracious and gorgeous” of the sexes by far. Your words and introduction to Greek history always sweeps me back in time…
Your post was also fascinating in that I learned that you, my Aphrodite friend, are named after Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and Achilles, the great war hero. It does makes Aquileana sound that much sweeter 🙂 Wishing you the absolute best in 2016 ~ and I have no doubt it will be a great year to remember.
Hello there dear Dalo… as always, your comments make me smile… thanks so much for calling me Aphrodite and I am pleased to know that you enjoyed teh post about Hermes, as much as learning about my nickname…
I am wishing you an amazing 2016 ahead, full of love, peace, joy and good things and moments. Best to you. Aquileana 🌟
🙂 The name fits you so well 🙂 Cheers to a great year for you Aphrodite ~ take care.
Meilleurs vœux pour cette année 2016 🙂
Qu’elle soit belle et festive.
Bonne anée 2016… merci de me rendre visite… Aquileana 🙂

Aquileana 😉
Hermes, Mercury, or the Vedic Sarama, are all associated with speed and transitions, movements and boundaries. May these attributes widen the frontiers of your 2016, Aqui, to make it realise all that you hope for…xxbest wishes.
Hi there dear Raj… thanks so much for dropping by and for highlighting the analogy among Hermes and Sarama… Truly interesting to learn about that.
I am wishing you an amazing 2016 ahead, full of good things and moments. All the best to you. Aquileana 🌟

Reblogged this on Apollo's Raven and commented:
This is a reblog from one of my favorite sites on Greek Mythology and Philosophy, La Audacia de Aquiles, by Aquileana. This post provides an overview of Hermes (Roman name: Mercury), the messenger of the Gods. It was Hermes´duty to guide the souls of the dead down to the underworld, which is known as a psycho pomp. Carl Jung often speaks of Hermes as psycho pomp, spiritual friend, or personal guide.
Thanks so much for sharing and for such a glorious introduction, dear Linnea… I will spread it out tomorrow on Twitter. Sending love and best wishes. Aquileana ✨
My pleasure, Aquileana. Have a wonderful day!

Dear Aquileana — I’m so sorry to be late to this wonderful post. (And so relieved that I did not miss it entirely!) Congratulations on your truly lovely poem.
You have been my teacher, as I knew very little of Hermes, beyond the messenger aspect. The first two paintings you shared were especially beautiful.
Wishing you a thriving Thursday! Hugs! 🙂

Muy interesante! En total, cuantos hijos tenia Zeus?
That is such an excellent question… I found on the web that presumably Zeus had a total of 92 children.
Of these 92, 41 were divine and 51 were mortal. However, since Zeus was a mythical god, there were conflicting accounts about whether certain beings were his offspring…
Sending much love… Happy weekend. Aquileana 😉
Really? Quite a number. His Indian counterpart Indra is projected as a Casanova. However he has only 1 mortal son Arjun (or atleast the most famous one)
Truly interesting comment.. You should write a post on this subject anytime soon… If you do, I could add a trackback to one of my posts… Sending love. Happy weekend ahead. Aquileana 💞
Great idea, as usual. Will do the same asap
If you do, let me know please… I will be posting on the muses soon… I am wondering if there is an equivalent for those ones… happy week ahead. Aquileana 😀

I love when I learn new words. I know I have one, who guides me daily: psychopomp. I couldn’t get through a day without it/her/him?
It’s funny how many culutres have a “trickster” in their legends
Quite a clever point concerning the figure of the “trickster”… You are right! 😃
Thanks so much for dropping by, dear Badfish… Wishing you a wonderful weekend. Aquileana 🐯

Wow. You have put so much effort into this post. It’s wonderful. As a shamanic healer, writer and relentless orator (loudmouth chatterbox) I really connect to Hermes and Mercury. When I was reading the part about Hermes disemboweling the turtle, it reminded me that a number of ancient cultures, used both animal and human entrails for divination. The connection between entrails and the harp could be seen as the harp standing for communication with angelic beings. Tone ratios being the expression of sacred geometry or sacred “Angels” (Angelic or heavenly communications.) It’s been awhile and I missed your beautiful posts. So thought I would stop by and say hi. Happy easter. Warmest regards!
Hi there, I like the heretical side of Hermes, which connects him to mystery cults and practices… In thi way, he is most times Hecate, the Greek Goddess of Crossroads, Magic, Witchcraft, The Night, Ghosts and Necromancy.
Your thoughts concerning animals entrails used for divination are accurate… Thanks so myuch for highlighting that detail, being that it appears in many cultures.
Thanks so much for such a thorough comment … Sending all my best wishes. Aquileana ⭐️
You’re welcome. Yes, I definitely have a touch of the heretical about me on a number of levels. I like jogging too. When I need inspiration I turn to to mercury to bring wings to my feet. There’s a Saggitarian Chiron connection with Mercury too, if I am not mistaken.
Thanks so much for your reply… I work out to relax as well…
I appreciate that you told me about the connection between Mercury and Sagittarius Chiron as It is something new to me.
Wishing you the best, Aquileana 🙂
