Ganymede was a Trojan prince in Greek mythology, known for his beauty. He was the son of the king Tros of Dardania, after whom Troy took its name, and Callirrhoe.
According to the myth, Zeus spotted Ganymede while the latter was attending to his father’s flocks and he became enchanted with his looks. Therefore, he took the form of turned into an eagle (Source: A Wing and A Day) and abducted Ganymede, bringing him to Mount Olympus.
In Olympus, Zeus granted him eternal youth and immortality and the office of cupbearer to the gods. From then on, Ganymede became water bearer to the Gods.
To compensate his father, Zeus offered him the best horses possible, and told him that his son would now be immortal and serve as a cupbearer for the gods, as well as a lover for him:
“Ganymedes now, mixing the nectar, waits in heaven above, though Juno [Hera] frowns, and hands the cup to Jove [Zeus]”. (Ovid, Metamorphoses 10. 152).~
Almost all gods were content with Ganymede, except for Hera, who felt jealousy.
The idea of Ganymede being the cupbearer of Zeus subsequently gave rise to his identification with the divinity who was believed to preside over the sources of the Nile, and of his being placed by astronomers among the stars under the name of Aquarius, which is associated with that of the Eagle.
Aquarius constellation is symbolized by the water carrier or the water bearer. The sun passes through this constellation from mid February to mid March.
There is another constellation also related to this greek myth, and it is called Aquila, which is the latin word for “eagle”. Needless to say that Aquila was the eagle that in Greek mythology actually bore Ganymede (Aquarius) up to Mt. Olympus. The eagle was also the thunderbolt carrier for Zeus.
Besides, Ganymede is the largest moon of Jupiter and in the Solar System. Still an extra fact is that according to observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have recently found that the largest moon in the Solar System is hiding an ocean under its surface.
“[Constellation] Aquila (Eagle). This is the eagle which is said to have snatched Ganymede up and given him to his lover, Jove [Zeus]. And so it seems to fly above Aquarius, who, as many imagine, is Ganymede”. (Pseudo-Hyginus, Astronomica, 2. 16).~
Ganymede was frequently represented as the god of homosexual love, and as such appears as a playmate of the love-gods Eros (Love) and Himeros (Desire)”.
Ganymedes was sometimes describes as the “Eros” of homosexual love and desire. Plato calls him Himeros (Sexual Desire).
“And when his feeling continues and he is nearer to him and embraces him, in gymnastic exercises and at other times of meeting, then the fountain of that stream, which Zeus when he was in love with Ganymede named Himeros (Desire), overflows upon the lover, and some enters into his soul, and some when he is filled flows out again”. (Plato, Phaedrus 255).~
Plato also mentions this myth in his dialogue “Laws”, in which he relates it to homosexuality:
“One certainly should not fail to observe that when male unites with female for procreation the pleasure experienced is held to be due to nature, but contrary to nature, when male mates with male or female with female, and that those first guilty of such enormities were impelled by their slavery to pleasure. And we all accuse the Kretans of concocting the story about Ganymedes. Because it was the belief that they derived their laws from Zeus, they added on this story about Zeus in order that they might be following his example in enjoying this pleasure as well”. (Plato, Laws, 636c).~
On the other hand, the myth was a model for the Greek social custom of Paiderastia, the socially acceptable erotic relationship between a man and a younger man.
Ganymede was depicted in Greek vase painting as a handsome boy. In the abduction scene his attributes were usually a rooster (a lover’s gift), a hoop (a boy’s toy), or a lyre. When portrayed as the cup-bearer of the gods he is shown pouring nectar from a jug.
In poetry, Ganymede became a symbol for the beautiful young male who attracted homosexual desire and love.
In Baldassare Peruzzi´s panel of “The Rape of Ganymede” (*see painting below) in a ceiling at the Villa Farnesina, Rome, Ganymede’s long blond hair and girlish pose make him identifiable at first glance, though he grasps the eagle’s wing without resistance.

¡Aquileana!
Te paso un enlace alusivo: Plato´s Dialogue, “The Symposium”: “On Platonic Love and The Myth of the Androgyne”.- http://wp.me/p60vo-2ZS Un gran abrazo, amigo. Aquileana ⭐
Muchas gracias por la referencia, Aquileana 😀
Love the selection of paintings!
Thank you very much dear Timothy!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Congrats, my dear! *pops open the champagne*
…wait a minute, do I see that you have nominated me for the very inspiring blogger award? Eeeek!
Thank you for thinking of me 🙂
Have a wonderful day & keep being awesome! 🙂
Hi dear Amanda…
How wouldn’t I nominate you?…. Your blog stands out and I ove your writing!… Bring on the Champagne… oh wait it is 7.00 am here 😀
Anyhow… Thanks for your words and I am wishing you a perfect day … Love and best wishes! Aquileana ⭐
Aw, thank you! You are making me blush! ☺️
I appreciate it… 7.00 am. Yikes! Perhaps we shall have tea and biscuits instead! ☕️🍪
Have a wonderful day! 🙂
Hahah… Tea and biscuits would have been perfect for that time of the day…. Hugs and best to you, dear Amanda!!!!. Aquileana 😀
Mi querida A.
Muchos besos A. ⭐
V.
Besos y abrazos, querida V… Aquileana ⭐
Great piece. I’d never heard this story before, but no surprise. I went to Catholic schools. Sister Kelly taught Greek mythology. She’d have avoided reading it herself, let alone teach it. Loved the paintings, too. Oddly I think I’ve seen one of them in a museum somewhere, but didn’t appreciate the reference,
I know … It is a quite rad story and I might think that many (not just a bunch) of my current followers here avoided reading it as they just didn’t comment and or plus over here… Might be coincidence, who knows?… I guess there are many different kind of love and even the Church nowadays have assumed a more open attitude as to homosexuality…. Even though, some topics are tougher than others, I know… even more to teach about them at School!… All my best wishes and thank you very much for dropping by, dear Noele. Aquileana 😀
Excelente y Felicitaciones!!!!
Un beso grande.
Rubs.
Muchísimas gracias, Rubs…. Abrazo grande para vos, Aquileana ⭐
A ti amiga.
Besos.
Rubs.
Amazing and interesting, as always, had to share, of course. 🙂
Hope this week is being kind to you, so far.
Thank you very much for dropping by an for your thoughtful comment!… have a great thursday… best wishes to you. Aquileana 😀
Now you are going to tell Tubularsock that Zeus snatched Ganymede away from his flock tending and put him in the position of “the office of cupbearer to the gods” without even a résumé?
Zeus does this because Zeus thinks he’s cute! Ok, “enchanting”. Same difference.
There has got to be some sort of sex discrimination case in this someplace. And the case could still be brought against Zeus because there should not be any statute of limitation period because of the “immortality” factor.
Not to mention kidnapping charges for “abduction” and transporting a victim across state lines on the way to Mt. Olympus!
All in all, Zeus is in big trouble if you ask Tubularsock.
You crack me up! :”Zeus does this because Zeus thinks he’s cute! Ok, “enchanting”. Same difference”…
After reading your plea against Zeus… I can’t but utter: “Guilty of all charges”… The Ruler of Gods should have been exiled from Olympus!..
Thanks for the witty comment… It was really awesome!.:)
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Such a great mini history and culture lesson. Thank you.
Thank you very much for dropping by and for your coment dear Melissa… I much appreciate it! … Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
This was one story our teacher in Greek class never would share.
Great post as always
Dear Aquileana – Kudos!

john
I know … It is a sort of forbidden myth, somehow… But here we are!!!… Thanks a lot for the comment dear John!.. Many hugs and best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Awesome as always Aquileana. 🙂
hank you very much, dear Maverick … I appreciate it
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
It amazes me that even Gods kidnapped and were interested in being gay! This story has all the thrills of being pictured! Lovely choice of paintings. I feel enlightened! Thanks for sharing another wonderful post. Stay blessed dear Aquileana.
Hi dear Balroop… Absolutely, abductions, rapes, homosexuality.. all this items appear in this myth.. It is interesting that the Ruler of Gods might be interested in same sex partners… I think the mere idea is definitely radical!…
Thanks for sharing your valuable insights… I am pleased to know that you liked the post… All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Fascinating story…beautiful pictures!
Thank you very much dear Marissa… I appreciate your words. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
I always look forward to your post, it’s so well researched that I hardly feel the need to go Google up some more info! Thank you! 😀
Well this is making a lot of sense of things I have not understood before. Like what in eagle would have to do with a water carrier. But what’s the big deal about being a water carrier? Why was that considered an honor?
Hello , Aquileana!
Thanks for visiting, and appreciations like! 🙂
A wonderful weekend! 🙂
Sincerely,
Aliosa.
Your are most welcome. Thanks for dropping by and best wishes to you. Aquileana ⭐
Thank you so much for the nomination. 🙂 Currently I am in a land of no wifi and flying cockroaches. 😦 So, I will post when I will have a good connectivity. 🙂 Thank you so much again. 😀
congratulations! you deserve them all and perhaps even more …
;D
Thanks a bunch for those beautiful words, dear Marlyn! Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Thanks for the pictorial ride through yet another interesting portion of Greek mythology. The pics are simply beautiful, bearing hardly any sign of Aquila ravaging Ganymede, and every indication of a consensual flight. The name Akhila means complete and universal in India, for what is Aquila the eagle in GM. By extension, what is aquileana, complete and universal, or an eagle?…):)
Hi dear Raj!…
Thanks for taking time to read and comment… And how interesting to know about the meaning of Akihla according to the hindu tradition!. Oh you spoil me wit those last words… ⭐ All my best wishes and thank you very much for dropping by! Aquileana 😀
Enjoyable post.Amazing events.J.M.

Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Hugs aplenty coming your way, Aquileana 😀
Hugs right back at you, dear Ina! Aquileana ⭐
Wow! This is great telling, unraveling of the highly mystical Greek Mythology! I am pretty fascinated by these tales and those illustrations are totally beyond cute! 😊
I just really wonder if Ganymede fared well! He didn’t choose to be no one’s object of affection or cupbearer and yet, the one who would give an arm and leg to be with Zeus; but stood absolutely zero chance, envied poor Ganymede to no end! Life can be filled with such twists and turns, that one man’s meat or good fortune, becomes another’s poison and snare! Tough deal ei?! 😔
Kudos Aquileana, this really grabs! 😄❤
Hi dear Yemie,
Such an excellent comment and powerful insights!
Life can be filled with such twists and turns, that one man’s meat or good fortune, becomes another’s poison and snare!...> What can I say?: Truly Well stated..
When it came to Olympians their Will was Law, so as to say… Hence, determinism prevailed above Free Will…
Thanks for sharing your thoughts as I much appreciate them… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐

I didn’t know this story/myth. Fascinating. At least the ancient Greeks were more open and honest about things.

Thanks for the clever inisghts Fatima.. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
as ever you are well deserving of your awards, it’s great to see you getting the appreciation you warrant. I love all the ideas about the source of the Nile, the Ganymede one is one I had not heard of before, I love it such stories as this, it makes everything more enchanting. The myths you bring to your readers makes the world exciting again, who needs realism when such stories have the power to still excite and make things magical.

Hugs!. 🙂 All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Whoa…dang those those Greeks. Apparently, it was hard for them to get through a day without a good rationalization. I’d never heard of this myth. Makes you wonder what the “actual” story was. And I also learned this, which bothered me a little: Ganymede is Catamitus in Latin, which moves to English as catamite, which means a boy kept for homosexual practices. This is the pejorative part: there’s actually a name for it.
Congrats on the awards!!
Dear Badfish… Thanks for sharing the latin etymology for Ganymede…
Really interesting… It would be a sort of Toy boy, so as to say.
I think this pejorative meaning of the word might be also linked to the idea of Pedereastia.
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
I can’t say I would object to being a cupbearer to the gods. 🙂 Although, I don’t understand why Zeus thought he had to kidnap Ganymedes to obtain him. I guess being gods, especially in his case, the god of gods he could do whatever he wanted.
I find it enlightening about gay lovers, the greeks etc., even Plato’s input. I had quite forgotten about how all this was accepted as a norm in Greek society and even among Romans who adopted a lot of the Greek ways. Yet todays societies still struggle with it. Go figure.
Well done on the awards, sweet Aquileana and, como me gusta la cancion! Muy bonita! Kai vocalist! ❤
Well that is a good point…. I mean the one referred to Ganymedes’ abduction and consequent rape… It seems that overall Zeus used to find resistance when it comes to potential lovers, both female ad male… I second your statements as to Love among same sex partners. it was more the rule than the exception, even more when it comes to males.
Thanks for the thoughtful and clever comment, dear kev… A pleasure to read your thoughts here. 🙂 All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Always a pleasure Aquileana. Thank you for such a thought provoking post. 😉
Querida Lía, Gracias por regalarme estas palabras… Te agradezco mucho.
Un abrazo grande, Aquileana ⭐
Thank you for sharing this story Aquileana, very inspired. Wish you success.
Thank you very much for dropping by, dear Della… 🙂
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Fascinating information about all aspects of the myth – I never knew about the Aquarius link. And I did enjoy Plato accusing the “Kretans of concocting the story about Ganymedes” because it would justify their own pleasures 🙂
But Zeus, oh dear, oh dear…no one was safe. If only Mount Olympus had had a sexual offenders’ register!
Hi dear Sue…. Well Plato through Socrates voice was quite prudish.
In Plato’s dialogue The Symposium, it is Aristophanes who presents homosexuality in his speech, in the excerpts linked to the “The Myth of the Androgyne”.

Poor Ganymede. Just minding his own business tending sheep and then bam! Snatched up by Dad, made immortal and told that he’s been delegated to the waterboy station for the rest of eternity when he isn’t servicing the lusty appetites of his father. That has got to burn just a little bit.
Still, I’d imagine eternal youth and beauty come with a price.
As usual, Aquileana, the ride into the mythological past has been an enlightening and entertaining one. And the accompanying art is always a treasure to view. Many thanks for your efforts.
Cheers to you and have a wonderful week!
Hi dear Shelley!
Poor Ganymede… Snatched up by Dad, made immortal and told that he’s been delegated to the waterboy station for the rest of eternity when he isn’t servicing the lusty appetites of his father.
Those insights of you are so accurate… You are very eloquent when it comes to words… I feel sorry for Ganymede as well!..
As to the eternal Youth and Beauty which come with a price… Well that’s a good point and worth highlighting… I’ll have to post about Immortal Youth among Greek Myths, soon… After I am done with Zeus lovers and its related characters.. I thank you for subtly suggest this great topic!.
I hope you are having a great week so far with ping pong games and so much more cool stuff… Please note that I am not mentioning obligations and work!… 😀 Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐

Hello my friend ❤
I've been away from the internet, but here I'm back and can read your post again. It's a sad story – as most of mythology seems to be – but you present it in a way that is always interesting, fascinating and thought-provoking. I wish you a perfect week! 😀

Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
I only knew the name Ganymede due to that being the name of one of Jupiter’s moons, but I had no other knowledge so this post was very enlightening indeed 🙂
Thank you very much for your comment dear Jeri.
By the way, Isn’t it cool that Ganymede is one of Jupiter’s moons, being Jupiter is the roman equivalent for Zeus?…
I am glad that you enjoyed the reading!.. ⭐ All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀

Salut cher Bernard… Très beau poème et jolies image et mots… Je te remerci mon ami pour ta visite.
Bisous! Aquileana 😀
Buonasera cara Aquileana,
It is extraordinary the depth of Greek mythology, any mythology in fact, in explaining simple elements of life to the more complex desires. This myth is a great example of the richness of mythologies which are still valid today.
Beautifully written.
Ciao
Luciana 😀
Cara Luciana.
I think it is a rich mith and also a quite rad one, due to sexual matters…
I am glad that you enjoyed as much as I enjoyed doing the research for this one!
Sending you all my best wishes!. Abbraccio! Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana. Its interesting to note the origins of many commonplace words that frequent my limited vocabulary. We have several people in the family bearing an Aquarius zodiac; never stopped to think about the root of the word before. Thanks and I send warm wishes your way.
I am glad that you found interesting information here… The astrology scope was totally new to me as well!
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Another awesome post about the greek gods. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for dropping by… I really appreciate the comment.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
I had no idea about this one, and I like to tell myself I know my Greek history. Pfft, I’m ashamed.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Always amazed (and a little in awe!) at all the information and stunning pictures in your posts. You construct a magic, magical and memorable experience every time. Thank you! 🙂

I truly appreciate your words. 🙂
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Hope you are enjoying a great week Aquileana! All the best…
Thanks and same to you, dear Rob!… Aquileana 😀
I always feel sorry for the young innocent mythical legends that get noticed by the gods and their lives are never the same and usually don’t have a happy ending. Interesting post Aquileana.
You are right, dear Kath… it seems there is an opposition of forces between the experience and naivety, somehow…
The tension does not always result in happy endings…. . 🙂
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Fascinating post and blog site, Aquileana! Thank you for your follow and the One Lovely Blog Award nomination. I’ll get to it after my holiday coming up. Those paintings remind me of Leda and the swan. What a beautiful young man.

Another part of Greek Mythology I had not heard of before.. Neither had I come across the paintings of Ganymede before… or if I had they had not registered.. It’s interesting how I suppose Ganymede explored his feminine side… And I really enjoyed reading about him..
And especially loved all of those paintings..
I also love the new addition of your own photo Aquileana..It is also Awesome!! ❤ ❤ ❤ Hugs to you my friend.. Love Sue xxxxxxx
Hi dear Sue. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as to Ganymede… It is a story which I think is quite rad, but it has a nice moral as it simply tends to highlight love, no matter within whom…
I am glad to know that you enjoyed the installment, my friend. Also thanks for your words as regard to my pic!… LOL… I was being silly with the web cam!. Many hugs!… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
It was a very nice photo of yourself.. Have a wonderful rest of the week.. And yes LOVE resides within us all… 🙂 even the dark ones its there inside somewhere.. xxx
Thank you very much for your words, dear Sue… Hopefully Love will always prevail… Many hugs! Aquileana ⭐
I’m an Aquarius and didn’t know this story! That’s interesting that Ganymede has a hidden ocean if it’s named after the water bearer. Thank you for another inspiring post!
I didn’t know the astrological sense behind Aquarius either!… Great to know that you enjoyed the reading and that you learned new facts as to your horoscope sign. Thanks, dear Sheila.. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Ah, interesting. I am an attractive guy to both men and women, and sometimes random men say hello to me when I am at the park in passing. I don’t have anything against homosexuals, one of my family members is a gay, but I would rather only be attractive to women so as to avoid awkward situations. Maybe I should get a haircut? It doesn’t bother me enough to motivate me to change my appearance though, to be honest. I should probably just get over it and not question why people I don’t know are nice to a stranger, I suppose I still have some growing out of my religious past to do, as what I am describing sounds like symptoms of homophobia to me, now. It’s a shame how some kids like me were raised to be judgmental, but it’s good that we can still reject the ways that we were taught to think, if we take the time to think them through critically.
Great post and research Aquileana! Best wishes!
Ry
High Five… the same thing happens to me at times… I find that when it comes to same sex relationships and or just flirting, women are into it, even when there might not been “consequences”… Just for fun… But men don’t flirt or fantasize with men unless they are gay…
I think that all this links to your comment… homophobia strictly saying is for me related to rejection of homosexual relations between men and women playing the manly male role in a lesbian relationship … That is how things work in a broad minded society … Still the patriarchal paradigm rules it all. And it is not up to question Male roles… I’d love to hear your thoughts, do you see it this way as well… Thanks a lot for dropping by, dear Ry… I missed you, friend!!… Best wishes, always. Aquileana ⭐
Hey, believe it or not, at least in the U.S.A., many straight men do flirt with other men, if they are good friends. They actually pretend to be gay, and call it a “Bromance”, a combination of Bros (brothers) and Romance. They say they do it because it’s funny and because they are comfortable in their sexuality. Even religious guys do it. All my closest guy friends the past several years do it, but I do not, because it seems so awkward to me, and is not something I have any interest in doing. It doesn’t personally amuse me to pretend to be gay/bisexual like it does a lot of guys, and I kind of think it is in a sense mocking actual gay men, but I have no idea how actual gay men view bromances between straight men.
Years ago I asked a woman I was friends with, what she thought about the guys who do that, and she didn’t like it, and thought bromances are weird and awkward. I have a married friend, whose child I am the godfather of, who constantly tries to have a bromance with me when we hang out in public, because he knows I’m not comfortable with that, but it doesn’t bother me to the point where I don’t want to hang out with him. It’s actually kind of funny, as it seems like he’s sexually confused, and that I am very not confused. His wife thinks it’s pretty funny. He’s only 21, and I’m 28, so their’s a maturity gap in our friendship, but I overlook it and tolerate it, as he’s really the only offline friend I have left that I haven’t burned bridges with. Since he and his wife had their child though, I’ve only seen him once in over half a year.
I totally prefer more mature friends like you, but I have an immature side to myself as well, I just am not interested in pretending to be gay or bisexual lol
I think the patriarchal paradigm is changing, to tell the truth. In developed countries, women are gaining more respect as leaders. For example, the president of your country, Argentina, is a woman, and here in America, there is a lot of support for Hillary Clinton as our next president. There has been a big shift in American bigotry towards support of equal rights of homosexuals, and recently our Supreme Court has debated legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states. I heard somewhere that it is already legal in over 30 of our 50 states. That, with many men being so comfortable in their sexuality here in the states, that they will flirt with their guy friends, shows me how open minded we are becoming. However, in some African countries, homosexuality is something punishable by death, and in some Middle-Eastern countries, if I’m not mistaken, they still have strict laws on homosexuality. In many Middle Eastern countries, though, the Patriarchal paradigm definitely still rules all!
I missed you too Aquileana, glad we are catching up again! Best wishes!
Ry
Hi dear Ry… So… Bromance?…. I didn’t know it was something usual over here , probably the male equivalent to Galromance here! ….
Does it involve sex or touching, etc… how does it work .. hehe … I am curious!.
Anyhow I think it might be a clear expresion of sublimation of repressed desires… I mean, I think all is good, as far as something really odd pops out… For instance that a gal is dating a boy and then she finds out that he has a sumiltaneous bromance affiar with a guy… Awkward.
As to your inisghts regarding the Patriarchal paradigm and the way it might be changing at least on more developed contries… I second your statements..
But you are right, it is a day by day basis and it might be harder to change systems of beliefs and approaches as to certain topics…
Also thanks for telling me about the legal prececents in the american Supreme Court… I had no idea about the attept to legalize gay marriage all throughout the country!.
By the way. Do you know this blog> http://broadblogs.com/ I recommend it to you… Many of these subjects we were talking about are regular issues there!.
I’ll stop by your blog to check ALL out tomorrow… Also I want to read some of your newest poems… So hang on … Wink!!!
Thanks for the intelligent comment, It was very interesting to read your insights here, dearv Ry,…
Happy weekend ahead and best to you!!! ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Hey! No, it doesn’t involve sex or touching, it’s more just awkward joking around lol
I have actually wondered about if it expresses repressed desires when guys have a bromance, but because of how many guys do it in America, I don’t think it could be repressed desires in every case. It’s kind of backwards thinking to me, to say they do it, if questioned, because they are secure in their sexuality, as it seems to express curiosity and uncertainty, not certainty of heterosexuality. Who knows, I don’t understand people in general I think, or maybe they cannot be understood. Which goes back to our conversation about believing lies and half-truths – we are illogical beings, through and through!
No rush to get to my blog, my most recent post will be a little bit of deja vu for you, as we’ve talked about the first part of the poem in it before!
It was interesting to read your insights as well Aquileana, you have a happy weekend too, and best to you as well!
Ry
I had forgotten all about this story. I love Plato’s take on it and how he blamed those from Crete… It was handy to have a god and a myth for everything our hearts…. desire. Great article and love the paintings.
You are so right…. It was handy indeed and also a way to justify certain passions, feelings and behaviours as well.. Thank you very much for dropping by, dear Olga. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Amazing pictures!
Kind regards,
Lettercastle
Thank you very much!. I appreciate your words.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
Yes, the myth of Ganymede was certainly one of the different myths of Zeus.
In most Zeus myths, it seemed like Zeus was always chasing one mortal female or another.
Ganymede was unique in that he was a mortal male that Zeus chased.
Very well pointed out!… He was the only male mortal that Zeus chased… Maybe that’s why in Astrology Ganymede is known as one of Jupiter’s moon being Jupiter the Roman equivalent for Zeus and being that particular moon the largest one. Thank you very much for the comment. Best wishes! Aquileana ⭐

Thank You for this great post. Ganymede was to me known only from Sci-Fi books. The name has inspired those who loves Space. If I remember correct is has been mentioned at least twice in the world’s biggest Sci-Fi series called Perry Rhodan having more than 3,000 novels.
What interesting bunch of literary Sci-Fi facts, dear Sartenada… Thanks for telling me as I had no clue… Great comment!…
I hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead. Best wishes!!!. Aquileana 😀
When there again new posts?
Hi there… Next thursday… I am actually posting only just twice a month… Otherwise I just wouln’t be able to catch up!… All the best to you. Aquileana ⭐
Ur a treasure house of fascinating tales. AND such voluptuous paintings – who’s the artist?
So Zeus was bisexual?
Hi dear Sweetyshinde!!!.
Thanks a lot for dropping by… I much appreciate it… As to the paintings you can check out the artist by clicking on them… And… yes, we could say he was bisexual somehow… It was his only male lover, though… Interesting point, right?… All the best to you!. Happy weekend ahead, Aquileana 😀
Very interesting. I guess it wasn’t a taboo back then, as we have made it in today’s world.
Sigh!… Wise insights!… Al the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Interesting. I had never heard of Ganymede before.
This paragraph made me wonder if your name means female eagle?
“There is another constellation also related to this greek myth, and it is called Aquila, which is the latin word for “eagle”. ”
Have a Happy Weekend!
That´s a very clever question…. Aquileana and Aquila sound certainly alike… But when I chose the nickname I was thinking of Achilles, the greek hero… Furthermore, my avatar is a drawing of Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom… Bottom line, Aquileana would be a sort of hybrid resulting from Achilles and Athena mixed up…
Thanks a lot for dropping by, dear Carol! All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀

Oh,our dissolute libertine Zeus,once again … !
How dare “The Ruler of the Gods” act in such an immoral way … !
Magnificent work,Aquileana Dear!I so much like the Symbols and the Metaphors in this myth.I’ve been mesmerised by the handsome cupbearer,Γανυμήδης,since I was a child ( of course then,I knew nothing about the psycho-sexual desires). To my eyes he was a real “Isotheos”,who was displayed like a Kouros statue! His name means =γάνυμαι =elate + μέδων = ruler.Obviously,Onomatology is a rich source of historical and scientific data, where one can see how Nature has organised our visible and invisible world …
But,as Herakleitos says “Nature loves to hide … ” and Zeus took the form of the eagle to accomplish the perfect Union of Power and Beauty.
Btw,when the Olympian Gods shared the birds, the Sacred Eagle with the incorruptible plumage, went to Zeus. This Mighty bird could fly near the sun without having its wings melted. What a nice way to teach Astronomy through a series of captivating myths!Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is the largest satellite in the solar system … There are so many references to this constellation in Homer, and then came the shaped myths.
Am I still a naive child,Aquileana ? Why do I connect all these symbols together …? There is so much to discuss on your detailed post, but not enough spare time.Believe me,it is not an escape from my identity lol … Sending Love your way, my sweetest one ~ I consider you a brilliantly shining Star in Aquila! Doda ❤ xxx
Dear Doda… I am so pleased to know that you enjoyed this post.. I think it is a special one as it states that the Ruler of Gods could fancy men as well.. Polemic, indeed!… As to the etymologies related to the Cupbearer, they are interesting as well… By the way, as I revisited this post I noticed that I should have included a mention on my latest article on The Pleiades as here we have another example of Metamorphosis involving constellation (Aquilla, in this case)…. Maybe I should update that post to add these points!.
I think that your way of unravelling hidden meanings is a talent and signal of intelligence and I celebrate that on you, my friend.
Thanks so much for your visits earlier today!.- I´ll be checking out your updates as well!. Hugs and best wishes! Aquileana 😀
Thanks kindly for your compliment dear Aquileana! It’s so exciting when we delve into the patterns of symbols and into the enigmatic, coded language.
Yet,there are so many undetected symbols that we have to spot beneath the surface. If we decipher them,we can replace the Olympians with science and maths that rule the universe … CU soon again ~ I’m still holidaying ~ Hugs Doda 🙂
Very clever and accurate words. Thanks so much for the reply here… I hope you enjoy your break ahead… We will keep in touch, though!… Virtual hugs and best wishes to you, dear Doda. Aquileana 😉
Love & Sunshine to You from this end ☀ლლ☀ლლ☀ლლ☀ Doda 🙂 xxx
