“Jupiter and Callisto” by François Boucher. In this painting Jupiter (Zeus) takes the form of Artemis/Diana (1759).
____________________________________________________________
Callisto (also known as Parrhasia) was a daughter of the Arkadian King Lykaon and a hunting companion of the goddess Artemis (Also known as Cynthia, roman equivalent: Diana).
Callisto’s themes are instinct and flexibility. Her symbols are a bear, a willow branch and the constellation Ursa Minor.
Callisto wanted to preserve her virginity for as long as she remained in the company of the Huntress- Goddess.
“Callisto once belonged to the sacred circle of Hamdryades and huntress Diana (Artemis). She touched the goddess’ bow : `This bow I touch,’ she cried, `Be a witness to my virginity.’ Cynthia (Artemis) praised her, and said : `Keep the pledge you vowed and you will be my companions’ princeps. [Ovid, “Fasti” 2. 155 ff. (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.)].~
But later on, she was seduced by the god Zeus (also known as Jove, roman equivalent: Jupiter), in the guise of the goddess Artemis.
The god transformed himself and took Diana’s (Artemis’) form–assumed Diana’s dress and imitating her awoke the maid, and spoke in gentle tones, `What mountain slope, O virgin of my train, hath been thy chase?’ Which, having heard, Callisto, rose and said, `Hail, goddess! greater than celestial Jove! I would declare it though he heard the words’. Jove (Zeus) heard and smiled, well pleased to be preferred above himself, and kissed her many times, and strained her in his arms, while she began to tell the varied fortunes of her hunt… But when his ardent love was known to her, she struggled to escape from his embrace: ah, how could she, a tender maid, resist almighty Jove?… [Ovid, “Metamorphoses” 2. 409 – 531. (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.)].~
When her pregnancy was revealed in the bath, Callisto blamed the goddess of the offence.
The Moon’s bent horns were rising from their ninth sojourn, when, fainting from her brother’s flames, the goddess of the chase observed a cool umbrageous grove, from which a murmuring stream ran babbling gently over golden sands. When she approved the spot, lightly she struck her foot against the ripples of the stream, and praising it began; `Far from the gaze of all the curious we may bathe our limbs, and sport in this clear water’. Quickly they undid their garments,–but Parrhasis (Callisto of Parrhasia) hid behind the others, till they knew her state… Cynthia (Artemis) in a rage exclaimed, `Away! Thou must not desecrate our sacred springs!’ And she was driven thence. [Ovid, “Metamorphoses” 2. 409 – 531. (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.)].~
Artemis, in her fury, transformed Callisto into a bear. Thus, the huntress became the hunted, somehow.
And lest her prayers and piteous words might move some listening god, and give remembrance, speech was so denied, that only from her throat came angry growls, now uttered hoarse and threatening. Still remains her understanding, though her body, thus transformed, makes her appear a savage bear… Over crags, in terror, she was driven by the cries of hounds; and many a time she fled in fear, a huntress from the hunters, or she hid from savage animals; forgetting her transformed condition. Changed into a bear, she fled affrighted from the bears that haunt the rugged mountains. [Ovid, “Metamorphoses” 2. 409 – 531. (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.)].~
Hunters then caught and delivered her and her son Arcas (which mans “bear”) to King Lykaon.
Sixteen years later Callisto, still a bear, encountered her son Arcas hunting in the forest. Just as Arcas was about to kill his own mother, Zeus averted the tragedy by placing mother and son amongst the stars as Ursa Major and Minor, respectively.
By fixing “those new made stars in the highest dome of space that circles the utmost axis of the world” [Ovid, “Metamorphoses” 2. 409 – 531. (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.)].~
Hera was not pleased with this arrangement, especially since Callisto was another of her husband’s infidelities, so with one of the Nereids, i.e Thethys‘ help, they cursed these stars to circle in the skies forever. That’s why the two constellations are circumpolar, visible all year round.

My blogger friend Marlyn Exconde from Kintal invited me to join her in the “Love in Ten Sentences~Poetry Challenge”.
I am gladly joining her for National Poetry Month. However, I took some creative licenses.
The original prompt strictly states that you should: a) Write about love using only ten (10) lines. b) Use “love” in each line. c) Each line has to be only be four (4) words long. d) Nominate ten (10) bloggers for the challenge.
I have read many poems following the Love in Ten Sentences Challenge and, as far as I am concerned, these points were put aside, or not even mentioned.
My poem doesn’t follow the prompts of the original Challenge, either. That’s why I will nominate ten (10) bloggers, as I suggest a new version of the Challenge, therefore called: “Non-Love in More than Ten Sentences”…
⭐ Rules for the “Non-Love in More than Ten Sentences Challenge”:
If you are in, you only have to link back to my blog and add your poem on your blog, making sure to include:
~The word “Love”, at least once.
~At least one adverb. (For instance: unavoidably).
~At least one quote or motto, marked by quotation marks.
As to the poem and particularly as to Non- Love, the topics might be related to: a break up, betrayals of love, an impossible love, amorous quarrels, an unrequited love, disappointment or disbelief with regard to love, and so on…
Finally, you shall nominate ten (10) bloggers for them to follow up this challenge, if they want to.
►Being all this said, these are my nominees for the “Non-Love in More than Ten Sentences”~ Poetry Challenge (in no particular order):
1. Poetic Parfait 2. Americana Injustica 3. Echoes and Reflections 4. Rosey 5. Forgotten Meadows 6. Sylvester L. Anderson 7. Eva Poetex 8. Friendly Fairy Tales 9. House of Heart 10. Poemimage.

This photograph is from an argentine movie called “Siete para un Secreto”(“Seven for a secret”), dated 1947. The main actor and the man above, was Carlos Cores, my grandpa´s cousin. On the other hand, my grandpa, Lito Pedemonte, was a militar. The interesting fact here is that Cores is wearing my grandpa´s military uniform. It seems that Carlos Borcosque, the film director, was trying to reduce budgets, somehow. [Credit Photo: Amalia Pedemonte ©]

Aquileana
Wish I could have had you as my Mythology teacher, you always present the stories so well.
I felt the anxiety in your poem, nicely done.
And what a great family photo to have too.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Awesome comment dear Maverick… I am glad to know that you caught the feelings beneath the words in the poem! And that you liked the mythology section as well!….All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Love the poem, and the mythology lesson. It is so funny to me that Thomas Hart Benton was influenced by a ton of Baroque painters, all of whom I love, such as Titian and Tintoretto. He did these huge social realist type works using massive muscles on midwesterners, seeming out of place to me. Anyway I thoroughly dig all the images here as well!!
Hi Ted, Thanks for dropping by and for sharing you artistic insights here… It is a pleasure to read your comment!!!!. Best wishes. Aquileana 😀
I don’t know why but I find her story a bit sad, even though she was destined to be a star in the heavens. Thanks for yet another detailed myth Aquileana.
I am happy to know that you enjoyed this mythological delivery!… thanks for your amazing comment dear Kath! ! All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
That Zeus was a Casanova and what lengths he went to, to seduce Caliisto. Wow! I knew you had some poetic blood in you. Your poem is spectacular in theme and wording 🙂 Now, I really have to put my thinking cap on for this challenge. Thanks sis, for inviting me.
Best of wishes
Sylver 🙂
Dear Syl!!!!… Thanks for your beautiful comment here and for taking part on the challenge… Your poem stand out!!!… Big hugs to you Poet bro. Love! Aquileana 😀

;D
They are, indeed… Thanks for inviting me for the original challenge dear Marlyn!… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
and thanks for enabling us all to see what else we can do aside from the usual
;D
Zeus was a horny little devil, wasn’t he? It’s good to be the king!
Another top drawer offering, Dear Aquileana,
thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying.
Abrazos Enormes
john
He was terrible, indeed!!!!…. Being King had its benefits for sure, dear John!… Thank for dropping by… Hugs. Happy weekend and
all the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
I also feel that Zeus was more of a monster! Why didn’t he accept his son? Or did he? I feel sad for the bear who couldn’t even speak.
Your poem is just wow Aquileana! Superb! But I could sense a sad vein that runs through it. Thanks for sharing. Stay blessed dear friend.
Hi dear Balroop! Zeus was terrible… I don´t know how many lovers he had… Too many!!! Mortal and divin… Broad target! 😀
Thanks for your words as regard to my poem, dear friend… It is sad indeed… And I could relate to the story somehow… Sigh…
Sending hugs and wishing you a beautiful weekend ahead! Aquileana ⭐
First let me congratulate you on this fine text, “Zeus and Callisto”. It is fascinating thanks to your fabulous gift of expression. Ironically I once wrote a poem about Callisto :-), thanks so much for the great article. Second, I will be working on your challenge, a non-love poem. I am intimidated by the stunning poetry you have contributed to this challenge…wow! Congratulations Aquileana and thank you for the invitation. Much love and hugs!
Really…. I am happy to hear that you liked it, you know I write poems but almost never publish them… So these words, coming from a great poet as you are means so much to me!. Thanks Holly I will stay tuned to read your poem then!… Sending love! Aquileana 😀
in addition, let me commend you on the gorgeous artwork included in this post!
Thanks a lot dear Holly!!!…
Virtual hugs and all the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Dear Aquileana,
How can you keep surprising so? What a marvelous poem! Did you notice how the photograph of your grandfather’s cousin and the other actor from the film could fit your poem–Did you do that on purpose? The two actors look at each other like all that was once thought possible is now no longer.
I think this post is your saddest one, for the story of Callisto is certainly most sad. Duplicitous Zeus, scorned Callisto, punished for nothing she has caused, and punished many times over: Transformed to a beast, hunted in terror, torn from her son, and then fated to see him also transformed, and see him only from afar but never ever hold him or even touch him. The Greeks should have explained rain by naming it “Callisto’s tears”.
Zeus becomes real to me when I read the old myths, for I hate him with the same passion I feel for every cheater and rapist. I don’t care if this is culturally insensitive. Pffftt!! Had I been Hera, I would have placed one of his lightning bolts where it would have done the most good.
]>:-)>
Always with fondness,
–O. Babe
My dear Outlier Babe… Let’s start with the photograph issue: It was intentionally, you got it… And you were the only one that mentioned it!… No surprises as you are so clever… The Greeks should have explained rain by naming it “Callisto’s tears”: That is a beautiful and sad statement at the same time… I second your words and share a similar feeling of hate towards Zeus…
Interesting to highlight though that he was the Ruler of the Gods… Oh those reprehensible behaviours… He was not very much alike the Perfect Christian God, right?….
Thanks for your outstanding common!… Great to read your insights here… All my best wishes and happy weekend to you. Aquileana 😀
Thank you for the compliments, and I wish you a lovely weekend, as well : )
As always I am amazed by the effort you put into your posts. Well researched, informative, inclusion of art and your own creativity. Sending you hugs and thanks.

Aquileana 😀
Love the little piece of personal history in the last photo. I am intrigued that Zeus thought that Callisto would be more responsive to the approaches of a woman than a man.
It seems that Callisto was in love with Artemis, so Zeus took advantage of that particular situation I guess!… Thanks for your words dear Gallivanta!!!. I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… All the best to you Aquileana 😀
Yes, the paintings seem to suggest she was very happy to be courted by the one whom she thought was Artemis.
Certainy, she seems to be happy! …
All my best wishes… Aquileana 😀
again such a thoughtful post but the surprise was your love poem, at the end..what a beauty!
Thanks a lot for your words… I am beyond appreciative to read your comment!!!… 🙂 All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀

Vielen Dank für Ihre schönen Worte… Eine umarmung, Liebe. Aquileana 😀
Not knowing where the story was going, as soon as I read she wanted to remain a virgin, I thought, “Wait until she meets Zeus – King of the Libito – and then along came Zeus! …and I didn’t anticipate the ending of the two stars. 🙂
And she came across him indeed… even when he showed up with the shape of Artemis, he got what he wanted, once again! … Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment, dear Frank!… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀

Now I know why you look like a movie star, is in the family genes! 😉
Today’s Mythology story is quite interesting. The content of it as always is charged with lust and sexuality more than love and tenderness. I wonder if Mythology was the “porn” of those eras! You, have added more to your record of a literary skills and intellectual capacity, all attributes that I admire! Go girl! You’re the best! Hugs for you! 🙂
Oh whata beautiful comment dear Avian!!!!… You have just put a huge smile on my face… I really appreciate your words and blogger friendship…Love You! Aquileana 😀

Mi querida A. (¿Qué voy a hacer con vos? Me decido por los comentarios en capítulos)
Adoro tu costado transgresor.
El costado más anarco sería: ¨Rules are made to be broken¨…
Aquileana 😀
Abrazo grande y beso gigante. 🙂
V.
Grandes palabras, querida Vero… ❤
“And that never-failing call of what was destined to be,
which, as unreachable as it is, unavoidably fades to nothing…”.
Mythology is much like anime… lots of boobs 🙂
Hahaha… Well stated!.. Best wishes. Aquileana 😀
On verra!..
Gros bious mon amie. Bon week- end. Aquileana 😀
This is hilarious:
The god transformed himself and took Diana’s (Artemis’) form… Callisto, rose and said, `Hail, goddess! greater than celestial Jove! I would declare it though he heard the words’. Jove (Zeus) heard and smiled, well pleased to be preferred above himself, and kissed her many times.
Interesting that in the end she wasn’t able to escape Zeus and yet she’s the one who gets punished by Hera.
I know right?…. I also thought it was hilarious when I firts read it… Plus I found the last sentence [“i.e. Jove (Zeus) heard and smiled, well pleased to be preferred above himself, and kissed her many times”] truly ironic, like a sort of feeling resulting of the enjoyment of not being oneself!!!!. And you are right, at the end women are punished by women, double misogynist punishment, so as to say… Thanks for dropping by dear Georgia… All the best to you! Aquileana 😀
Poor, poor Callisto! Such a sad story. I loved all the paintings you discovered – the artists enjoyed painting the two ‘women’ together I think! Congratulations on more awards, dear Aquileana and especially for writing such a wonderful, wistful poem. You are such a talented young woman. Lastly, I was most impressed by your film-star relation – the photograph is very special. Best wishes and love, Clare xx
Dear Clare!… I love your comment… You are right, I also found odd that most of the artists chose to depict Callisto and Artemis together and I could barely find one or two paintings of the original mates Zeus and Callisto…
I am happy to know that you liked the poem and your positive feedback lifts my spirit!!!… As to the photograph and the movie story behind I found it so haunting when my dad told it to me last week that I just couldn´t avoid mentioning it here on this post! Thank you very much for your beautiful comment!!!!. All my best wishes and happy weekend to you. Aquileana ⭐
My pleasure, dear Aquileana! Keep up the poetry – you are very good! Best wishes, Clare ❤
Thank you dear Clare!… I will try to post poems from time to time… Much Love, Aquileana ⭐
Very beautiful paintings. The poem is profound. Great post. Thank you for sharing with us.
Have a wonderful day, Aquileana and only good for you. Ştefania. 🙂
I truly appreciate your words. dear Ştefania!!!!. Glad to know that you liked the post and poem!.
Thank you very much for dropping by!. Happy weekend. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
What a good-looking family you have! Poor Callisto, it was no good to attract a god, only trouble came of it in the end. Thanks for inviting me to do the love challenge. O did do a poem here: http://friendlyfairytales.com/2015/03/22/the-love-challenge/ I like your poem, too. The Not-Love poem is a good twist, and in keeping with the post! 🙂
I love your poem Brenda…. Thanks for adding the link here so I could read it! Have a wonderful weekend! Aquileana 😀
Oh that Zeus, he is so much about seduction, isn’t he? Interesting to learn about Callisto, my friend, and your poem is lovely too! It speaks of almost meeting, almost having love, yet it is elusive and not to be… I like that you actually published one of your poems here! Thank you, as well, for the kind invitation to the challenge. I am not sure if I will participate as I am such an advocate/embracer of love, rather than “non-love” and find beauty in all… but I will think it over for sure. I wish you a love-ly day!! ❤ xo
Zeus is “all” about seduction… there are still many stories ahead, mind you!.
Callisto: I found her story sad as she fell in love with a Goddess and thought she has conquered her, when in fact, It was Zeus in the guise of Artemis… What follows is still even sadder, she being transformed into a bear, having a son who almost killed her and lastly being punished by Zeus’ wife, Hera who put her and Arcas (his son) in the sky as two stars in the Ursa constellation… Well I hope you are not wiping, dearest friend.
You know that the challenge is not compulsory, of course.
But I just wanted to clarify something: Non love in the sense of the prompt of the challenge (see examples of subjects above) is not necesarily the opposite of Love…Anyhow, all is fine as far as you felt this sense of Non Love wasn’t your theme.
Sending you love for your weekend and many hugs, Aquileana 😀
Thank you for understanding and for the extra details you provide me in your response here. I am hoping your weekend is wonderful, bright, and happy, with purple cars and BC gal! 😀 Many hugs for you AP! Love CB
And thank you for the beautiful words back to me… Did you have a nice weekend?…. BTW, Thanks for coming to visit me with your purple car, as we both wore our stripped t shirts…. 😀 Always lovely to see you… Here’s to a great week ahead CB from BC… Love & hugs, Aquileana ⭐
Hehe yes we have striped shirts though, not stripped ones ahahah – ‘stripped’ means taken off, oh my! I had a nice day, offline last night, thank you! Did you have a good weekend, Aqui-honey? 🙂
Oh Oh…. We’d better don’t read my mistake with Freud’s lens as he’d probably take it as an expression of a forbidden desire or something like that 😛
I had a very nice weekend… And great to know that you did as well!…
By the way… how is book publishing process going, so far?…. I am wishing you a great evening and night ahead… Many hugs! Aquileana ⭐
Hehe Freud would have a heck of a time with our conversations! We might have to be in the office for a while, lol. Glad you had a good weekend, honey. Yes, all is well with the book project. How is your mom’s book going? Hugs for your Tuesday!!
Agree with you CB… anyhow, sometimes it is good to analyse things… but not that much… Otherwise you end by focusing so much in the tree that you forget to contemplate the woods… Hmmm does it make sense to you…
Good to know that all is fine as to the upcoming book… As to me, I am already done with the book´s translation and Granola Schools´ stuff! 😀
Big hugs for your Dump Day ahead!!!!!… Aquileana ⭐
I suppose I agree to an extent about analysis, but sometimes we have to analyze the trees in the forest or they could rot away and then there would be no forest! 🙂
Excellent that we are both keeping up with the projects. Congratulations on being done your mother’s book.
OH MY!!! Hehehe you said “Dump Day” instead of Hump Day and I am laughing again — lolllll dump is like garbage – well I don’t want you to wish me a garbage kind of day!! OH Aquileana, stripping and all eeek I’m giggling again – this is the funniest conversation we’re having 🙂 HUGS!!!
It is a matter of balance… To think and or analyse but not that much as to loose the bigger picture I guess…
Dump Day… Oh dear… Next time I’ll proofread my comment using the translator… It is not the most accurate guarantee, but, at least, it is something!… 🙄 Many hugs, dear CB… Aquileana 😀
Hehe the translator doesn’t understand granola though, so be aware 🙂 True about your words on balance, as well. I’m looking forward to talking with you very soon, my sweet friend. HUGS!
Your are right; CB… it doens´t understand Granola and would never be able to do so!!!!…
And… So I am… Up soon! Hugs, Aquileana ⭐
I had so much fun with you yesterday, AP! It was a delight 🙂 HUGS for the great galpal times xo Happy Friday!
Me too 😀
Hugs for your day, your Sunday, your day of smiles and hugs! 🙂
Hugs…
Good evening Aquileana, I would only like to thank you for all this knowledge you comunicate us here, even though the story about Zeus and his insidiousness and the tragedy of Callisto makes me sad. I very much appreciate the paintings you included, they help me to better come to grips the “lesson”. Beautiful is also your poem. Thank you for all your commitment.:)
Hi dear Martina!… I have been in your blog last night and i love the Zurich tour post following Joyce’s footprints!. Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.I truly appreciate your words as they mean a lot to me!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐

Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
The photograph was an amazing finding… I asked my dad which was that pic about because I didn´t even know my grandpa´s cousin and when he told me the story behind it I knew I had to share it here!… I am glad to know that you liked it and the poem, as well!!!. Happy weekend!.Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana ⭐
I’m learning so many new things from your posts dear Aquileana 🙂 Lots of love and have a happy weekend ahead… 🙂

Aquileana ⭐
Thank you for yet another incredible post & poem. Best wishes to you, dear Aquileana ❤
Have a good weekend,
Takami

A really great post and well presented.
Thank you very much for reblogging this post!
Best wishes Aquileana 😀
I saw an alternate version of how the bear came to be a constellation which I shall put a link to here, all 52 seconds of it…it seems believable to me… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOJoLaxokzM
Interesting version…. I’ll have to search for information regarding Ursa Constellation and Hercules… By the way, It was neat to listen to Hercules peaking in spanish (“Padre!’)… Great finding, dear Ste! Thanks for adding the link!… All my best wishes! Aquileana ⭐
HAPPY WEEKEND hugs!
Hi Simona!, Happy weekend. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀

Beautiful poem Aquileana and enjoyed reading about Callisto and her love triangles. Congratulations on your awards, all are well-deserved! Have a lovely weekend.
Thanks a lot dear Mary for your lovely comment!… I am really pleased that you liked the post and really appreciate your words!… All the best to you Aquileana 😀
One of the beautiful things about mythology is the wonder that it infuses into everyday life. When I am lying under the stars in the wilderness, as I often do, I will now think of Callisto circling around the heavens for ever. Also, the next time I spot a bear in Yosemite I will wonder, could it be…
Beautiful insights…. It is great to read your words, in any shape, dear Malcolm… Thanks a lot for dropping by and for leaving your thoughts here!. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
A lovely poem, Aquileana, and another interesting post. So that’s how we got Ursa Major and Minor! 😉 Have a beautiful weekend! ❤
Yes, that the origin of that constellation, dear Linda!!!… Isn’t it amazing that it is all originated by a myth, somehow?…. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for dropping by Aquileana ⭐
You are so talented, I love your researched explanations and especially your poetry, well done on your awards and keeping on top of all this.
Best wishes Charlotte 😘
Dear Charlotte!!!.. I am really pleased to know that you liked the post and your words and appreciation mean a lot to me!. Thank you… All the best to you Aquileana 😀
Nice post dear Amalia.

I really love it.

Hi dear Rotze!…. I write at times but, as you know, but seldom I post what I write. I thought the challenge was interesting so I gave it a shot!… It is great to know that you liked the poem!… Thank you much for your words.
Hugs and have a wonderful weekend! Aquileana ⭐
You bring the past alive and meaningful for our age. These are universal themes that tie to the past and future, but allow us to understand our present. Excellent post.
You are so right I think that Mythology is the cutural side of History somehow!… Thank you very much for your deep insights here, dear Rebecca!… have a joyful weekend… All the best to you Aquileana 😀
Lovely post and poem Amalia. The gods had a fun time sun bathing and other pleasantries. lol. 😀 ❤
They do, indeed dear Ralph… I am really pleased to know that you liked this feature and the poem! Thank you, my friend! ⭐ … All the best to you Aquileana 😀
What another piece of mythology and writing ~ it is as if you are here right now teaching me the ways of the world. I’ve another favorite to think about now, and when at light and I look up at the sky I will be able to see and think of Callisto the bear, as well as the beautiful girl that introduced it all to me. Cheers to a great weekend!
Hi dera Dalo … Thanks for such a beautiful comment… The excerpt in which you mention Callisto and the stars really touched me… Oh and I blushed a little bit as well. Have a great weekend! Best wishes to you! Aquileana 😀
This comment makes me smile with happiness this morning ~ wishing you the best too my friend! Cheers to a great weekend.
Have a great week dear Dalo!!!! … All my best wishes ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Reblogged this on Apollo's Raven and commented:
The following is a reblog of one of my favorite websites on
Greek Mythology: “Zeus and Callisto” / Poetry: “Poem Challenge” 04/08/2015 by Aquileana
Callisto was a daughter of the Arkadian King Lykaon and a hunting companion of the goddess Artemis (Also known as Cynthia, roman equivalent: Diana).
Callisto’s themes are instinct and flexibility. Her symbols are a bear, a willow branch and the constellation Ursa Minor.
Callisto wanted to preserve her virginity for as long as she remained in the company of the Huntress- Goddess. However, Zeus tricked and seduced her. Please read on.
Thank you very much dear Linnea for sharing this post on Apollo´s Raven and for the introductory words above. All my best wishes! Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana,
I continued to be amazed by your wealth of knowledge of Greek Mythology. I’ve particularly liked your recent posts on the various lovers of Zeus and the schemes that he uses to trick and seduce them. It is particularly interesting to learn the mythology for the constellations Ursa Major and Minor.
Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend!
Best wishes,
Linnea
Dear Linnea!
Thank you very much for your words here… Your insights are clever and accurate as always… I still have a good number of lovers to post about… But I am wondering if I should post about Artemis first as she is mentioned in this post and I like to tie successively tie the posts… We´ll see… When I came across a God or Myth which had an equivalent in Celtic Mythology I will let you know so that way maybe we can schedule a collaboration or something!… You are invited whenever you want and if you are interested and have any suggestion with regard to potential subjects, please let me know… Best wishes to you! Aquileana 😀
As always interesting post.. Very beautiful artworks and poem… Have a great weekend. 🙂
Thanks for your words dear Verna… I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… Happy weekend and all the best to you Aquileana 😀
You’re welcome! Happy weekend to you also. 🙂

You’re welcome! Have a great week also. 🙂
Bisous! Aquileana 😀
And another broken heart is responsible for wonderful feelings and emotions and poetry, none the less. “No witness, just ourselves.
The absence of light, our own ghosts.
Darkness awaiting, full of promises.
needlessly looking for words.
Quiescent, naive expectations.” Beautiful.
Thanks for the great feedback… I am beyond appreciative, regardless of that broken heart gloomy feeling!!!!.
Happy week ahead. All my best wishes ⭐ Aquileana 😀

Buona settimana amico Omar! Baci, Aquileana 😀
So Artemis transformed Callisto into a bear. It seems an odd creature for the hunter to chose. There are many more creatures more easily hunted, and that would be in dread fear of the hunt. I think a bear would defend, attack back. It sounds like a challenge to me!
You are right, dear Resa!… I guess bears might represent the wild side of Gods-Goddesses…. Probably a challenge as you say, involving to defeat or at least include their dark unconscious side or, known as shadow according to Carl Jung…
As to the hunt itself it seems the favorite animals among the greeks were deers and wild boars, well that judging for the depictions on greek old vases.
Thanks for dropping by amiga!. Besos. Aquileana 😀
The story is very interesting as always .. It points to the fact that no matter what the cause you pay for your own mistakes or misjudgements.
Did you write the poem, it’s very beautiful.
Interesting knowing a bit about your grandfather !!
Yes, I wrote it…. I am happy to know that you enjoyed it, dear TB. And that you liked the old family pic as wll…. Your insights as to the the myth are accurate and clever… Thank you very much!!!!.. Happy week ahead to you! Aquileana 😀
😊 best wishes to you too my dear
Thanks… have a great day ahead, dear TB! Aquileana 😀
Once again I come away from your post with a new nugget of knowledge I can tuck away for a rainy day… this time the origin of Ursa Major and Minor. Thank you too for sharing a poem with us during National Poetry Month.
And thanks for your comment here, dear Jeri… I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the myth… I think this is a beautiful story and I love the twists on it…
Against all odds… And regardless of what woefully happens to Callisto!…
Happy week ahead to you…. Best wishes! Aquileana ⭐
loved this post! hadn’t realised that’s where the two bears in the stars come from!
Hi dear Freya!!!!… Neither did I …. Quite stunning, right?…
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
I wonder how many lovers Zeus exactly had..He always had someone new to seduce 🙂 Great post Aquileana. I truly enjoy reading it, Greek myth is truly fascinating through your writing!
Hi dear Indah!…. Good question!!! Here is a list here, but I think it is not complete though!
http://edweb.sdsu.edu/people/bdodge/scaffold/gg/zeuslover.html
Thanks for dropping by… I truly appreciate your words.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Callisto was transformed into a bear…to defend herself? One wonders.
In thinking of Callisto, it is the constellations that come to mind Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Callisto is one of Jupiters(Zeus) moon. Quite interesting.
Good points as to Callisto being one of Jupiter’s moon….
As to the bear metarphosis… It was a punishment coming from Artemis herself, who transformed Callisto into a bear because she noticed she was pregnant and that therefore had broken the vow of chastity which was a common feature of all Artemis’ maidens!!!.
Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Thank you so much for sharing. So much wonderful mythology to learn.
Indeed… Greek mythology is inexhaustible.
Thank you… Best wishes! Aquileana ⭐
Mi querida A ⭐
Regreso.
Abrazos extra large. 🙂 + Besos A.
V.
Hola Vero!!!!.
Son todos temas candentes… Agudos…
Abrazos y besos XXL. Excelente miércoles para vos. Aquileana 😀
Yet another informative post with such stunning art work – they surely feed my soul. Thanks for the challenge also. Unfortunately, I’m suffering from a bad case of a writer’s block at the moment, but am hoping to find a cure. Much love, A! xo
Writer´s block… No way…. Well I am sure you´ll get over it soon…. No worries about the Challenge!….
You take good care of yourself ow and creativity will soon knock at your doors. 😀
Thanks for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Noora.

Will be able to email you on Monday – absolutely hectic weekend. xo
Anytime dear Noora.. Looking forward to hearing from you…. Love xo Aquileana 😀
Hello Aquileana,
I’m catching up. Haven’t been blogging since 4 April.
I looked at the paintings first – what fleshy women! – and wondered if this was a case of homosexuality and then discovered that Zeus was up to his tricks again. Interesting explanation of the two bear constellations.
Your poem is beautiful and poignant, dear Aquileana. “We vanished precisely when we were getting closer.” So sad.
I also enjoyed the photo and the story behind it. Cores looks great in your grandpa’s uniform.
Thank you for this lovely post and enjoy the rest of the week! Best wishes ❤ Irina
Hi dear Irina!!!!!…
Great to see you are back and I´ll be catching up with your newest posts soon….
Thanks for your clever insights and for your sweet words as to my poem… Coming from such a poet like you are, they mean even more to me!!!!
It is a quite rad myth, isn´ it…. Homosexuality appears also in male version, mind you I´ll soon post on Zeus and Ganymede.
But before that, I´ll be posting on Artemis… I have a proposal for you: would you like to come over here for a poem on Artemis…
I´d love to have you… Just let me know if you are interested… It will be posted thursday next week…
Best wishes to you and hugs! Aquileana 😀
You mean you’d like me to compose a poem about Artemis?
Good morning from here Buenos Aires, dear Irina… Exactly that´s what I meant… If you want to I will pass you the myth for you to read it and furthermore write a poem if you want… No creative pressures or anything in case you accept, just telling you in advance… You write what you want, keeping in mind the most general points… My email is apdmont@gmail.com just in case you are interested and want me to tell you more!!!. As you want… if you aren’t interested, can’t or don’t want to, all is fine… I wanted to invite you so I already did and you can come whenever you want!!!! …
Happy day to you! Aquileana 😀
Dear Aquileana,
In my eagerness to accept your invitation, I googled Artemis and started to compose a poem last night! When it’s finished, I’ll email it to you for your approval. It’ll be free verse with some rhyme here and there. You can also send me your material if you wish. Thank you very much for the invitation. I feel truly humbled and honoured.
Best wishes and hugs ❤ Irina
Awesome!!!!…. Great to know that you accepted, dear Irina… I assume your email which finishes. au is the one that appears on my dashboard at WordPress… I will send you, later this afternoon, the excerpts related to what I have been working on for the upcoming post…. Will keep in touch then and feel free to write without any sort of restraints, meaning: as you wish!!!!…
Love and happy day to you. Aquileana 😀
Great coverage on Zeus and Callisto! Love that Poem, Amalia! It’s beautifully written. And so very well done with the three awards that are so very well-deserved. ❤ Blessings to you and all you do. 🙂
Thanks for dropping by, dear Kev!!!!… I am happy to know that you enjoyed the poem and truly appreciate your words here.
Blessings to you and your inexhaustible creative force ⭐ Virtual hugs. Aquileana 😀
Loved the poem, Aquileana! If you end up doing a book of them, we’ll have to chat about interviewing etc. 😉
It is not still in my plans… But, anyhow I much appreciate the offer and support, dear Kev!!! ⭐ Best wishes and virtual hugs! Aquileana 😀
Very good.
Likewise. 🙂
Buongiorno Cara Aquileana,
I feel sorry for these mortal women Zeus abducted and then raped. They are blamed for his actions (some things never change!) and then changed into an animal or a plant! The patriarchal society making sure women know their place!
ciao
Luciana
Buongiorno cara Luciana!…. You are right… Furthermore…. we should keep in mind that Callisto was punished firstly by Artemis and later on by Hera…. Thus women punish women, which is even more tough than one could ever have expected if when Men were guilty!… Thanks for dropping by, cara Luciana. Abbraccio. Aquileana ⭐

Okay… The URL I was provided was whole.com … So you’d better check out your About.me page and change the URL!!!!…. I will be there… cheers, Aquileana 😀
why would I need to change it?
whole.com doesn’t work….
the one you sent wholedotcom.com does, of course…
Here in notifications I am given whole.com
my blog is just weird like that i don’t know why..
That’s why I asked you which was your URl cause I couldn’t skip the intro… Anyway… I suggest you to sign in About me and add the URL to your blog among your avatar information… That would give bloggers the possibility to find your blog easily!…. 😀
thank you for the advice 🙂

And now, yet another new perspective of the sky, Aquileana. Thank you for giving me one more reason to pause and look up with new curiosity at these two well-loved constellations.
And what a stinker that Zeus is.

Interesting take on the poetry challenge, Aquileana. I like its dark beauty. And the Greeks sure had some beautiful names for their lady deities. 🌸

Hi my sweet friend Aquileana!
I’m still on holidays,I’m away from Athens, something must be wrong with your flag counter, which says I arrived from Athens, presumably it’s not exact.
However,I am here to tell you how much I enjoyed your work on this remarkable myth. There are so many cultural and historical details we could discuss on this myth, but I’ll only refer, very quickly,to some points.
I’d like to stress out that Eros’ overpowering weapons,His fiery arrows of desire, can conquer even Gods … It’s obvious in the myth that even Gods act on their passions, which of course means that LOVE is the Uppermost Power … However,is rape the extension of Love ? Presumably,it is,but not at its last, ideal phase … and thus, traumatises the innocent victims …
We also see in this myth the aspect of “Women loving Women … ” Zeus approached poor Callisto “like” a woman.. There is a point here … I can’t believe that Zeus hadn’t other ways to seduce her …And what purity and virginity meant ?The answer is,”Freedom” … Untamed,Powerful Women …
Also,it’s really interesting to see how Astronomy and Myths were connected,in this case.Strong social and cultural elements entwined in the simple mythical lines … Ancient people and scientists were great sky watchers and according to the star patterns they observed, they forged and shaped the myths.
PS:I so much liked your poem as well as the old film-photo included with your family connections. The glorious past of your family directs your brilliant trajectory,my lovely friend!
Sending you all my Love & Best Wishes;enjoy your Sunday! Doda 🙂 ❤ xxx
Dear Doda.
Thanks for such a great, thorough comment!…
You are right: there are many layers in this myth: passions, love, jealousy, homosexuality…
Your insights as to Eros’ overpowering weapons and His fiery arrows of desire which can conquer even Gods, are eloquent. I agree with you
As to rape, it seems it was Zeus´strategy as a lover… Most of the myths involving him include metamorphoses and rape… Which are linked one to the other somehow.
Virginity is here Freedom as you say and also a sort of promise of remaining faithful to yourself and in nymph Callisto´s case, to Artemis.
You are right as to the importance of Astronomy and the way it might be depicted through this ancient greek myths as well
It is a powerful symbolism that remain in the skies somehow.
Finally, I appreciate your words as to my poem and I am pleased to know that you liked it, my dear friend.
Your comment is wonderful… I am appreciative to read your clever insights…
Sending you love and hugs and I hope that you keep on enjoying your holidays… Please make sure to take photographs so that way I can travel with you
Thank you for appreciating my comment,I always enjoy discussing with you the delicate intricacies behind the myths …
Oh,my sweet friend,I have zillions of photos from my travels that make my life difficult … lol.Love & broad, spring smiles to you,to warm your autumnal cool days 🙂 ❤ xxx
Every time when I start to read Your new post, I feel excited, because I have no idea about what to find before the last line passes in front of my eyes.
Thank You again for this inspiring post.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Sartenada.
I truly appreciate your words… You made me smile high!!!!
Sending you all my best wishes for a happy week ahead, Aquileana 😀
What a sad life story poor Callisto had – cheated, abandoned, punished, alone (even scared of the other bears!), and then hunted by her son. It makes me want to give those gods and goddesses a good hard slap, frankly 😉
Thanks for another story I had forgotten about, dear Aquileana 🙂
It is a very sad and touching story dear Blake, I am with you! Callisto’s yth is really sad!
She fell in love with a Goddess and when she thought she has conquered her, she didn’t as it wasn’t Artemis but in the guise of the Goddess of Hunting
Plus she would be transformed into a bear later on and she would have a son who’d almost killed… Finally she was punished by Hera and she and her son Arca where transformed into fixed stars!…
That’s quite the story, right?… I am mesmerized by this myth!.
Thanks a lot for dropping. I truly appreciate your words. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
I really enjoyed reading this story about Zeus, Callisto and Artemis. I confess, I didn’t know the story behind Ursa Major and Ursa Minor and found it fascinating. Zeus was just one big troublemaker! He certainly did no favours for Callisto, even tricking her by making himself appear as Artemis. Wonderful and informative post, Aquileana. Thank you. 🙂
It is a quite interesting story, isn´t it?…. So many back and forths!….
So here we are and now we know how Zeus did to conquer the virgin nymph, in the guise of her mentor, Artemis!.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Millie.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Thank you, Aquileana, and very best wishes to you, too. Congratulations on all your awards, too. I forgot to say that! 🙂
