Athena (Roman Equivalent: Minerva) was the city protectress of Athens and goddess of war, handicraft, wisdom and practical reason.
She was the daughter of Zeus and Metis, but she was born produced without a mother, so that she emerged full-grown from his forehead. The story of Athena’s birth is perfectly told in the post “The Weirdest Births of Mythology”~ Micromythos. It is said that while Metis was pregnant, Zeus ate the fetus following Uranos’ and Gea’s advice, who told him that if a boy was born, he would snatch his father’s power. The fetus was then carried in Zeus’ skull during nine months. After that time, the god had a terrible headache and ask the blacksmith god Hephaestus to split his head with an axe in order to relieve him from his pain. Then Athena, already as a young girl came out of his head, completely dressed and armed.
Her emergence there as city goddess, accompanied the ancient city-state’s transition from monarchy to democracy. Her birth and her contest with Poseidon, the sea god, in which the Gods disputed which of them should give the name to the capital of Attica, were depicted on the pediments of the Parthenon, and the great festival of the Panathenaea.
She was also part of the Judgement of Paris, in which she competed with Hera and Aphrodite for the prize of the Golden Apple.
Athena was essentially urban and civilized, the antithesis in many respects of Artemis, goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and vegetation. She was usually portrayed wearing body armour and a helmet and carrying a shield and a lance.
Besides, she was said to be the creator of the olive tree, the greatest blessing of Attica.
She was associated with birds, particularly the owl, which became famous as the city’s own symbol, and with the snake.
In Homer’s “Iliad”, Zeus, assigned the sphere of war to Ares and Athena.
Athena’s moral and military superiority to Ares derived in part from the fact that she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill, whereas Ares represented mere blood lust.
Athena thus appears here as war goddess, who fights alongside the Greek heroes. She is the divine form of the heroic, martial ideal: she personified excellence in close combat, victory, and glory.
Athena also appears in Homer’s “Odyssey”, representing the tutelary deity of Odysseus.
Athena also has am important role in Aeschylus’ tragedy “The Eumenides” (third and last part of Aeschylus’ “Oresteia”). There, Orestes is judged by a jury composed of Athena and twelve Athenians. After being counted, the votes on each side are equal. Athena declares that tied juries will result in the defendant (Orestes) being acquitted as mercy should always take precedence over harshness.

Homeric Hymn 11 to Athena. (Greek Epic C7th to 4th B.C.) :
“Of Pallas Athena, guardian of the city, I begin to sing. Dread is she, and with Ares she loves the deeds of war, the sack of cities and the shouting and the battle. It is she who saves the people as they go to war and come back. Hail, goddess, and give us good fortune and happiness!”~

I love all these paintings. They bring back memories of when we lived in Madrid and would visit the Prado and other museums weekly. We have few museums and galleries with master works. But we do have a lot of great contemporary art in New Mexico. I loved you Hi and Bye video.
Hi Tim!!!… Thanks for your kind words… And glad to know that this post brought back good memories to you!…. Also good to know that you liked the video… By the way, Your WP blog is still available or you just changed site?… I will take a more in depth peek!. Best wishes, Aquileana 😆
Hi Aquileana. My WP site will just sit like it is until November. I moved my blog to my T & L Photos website at http://photos.tandlphotos.com/blog. You can subscribe via RSS or through bloglovin.com.
Hola Aquileana. Otro excelente post.
Aquileana 😀
Enhorabuena por esos premios 😉
Gracias Chus. Un abrazo para vos! Aquileana 🙄
Great post, thank you! I come across Athena quite often in works and architecture of Art Nouveau as goddess of handicraft.
As here: http://wp.me/p3Po2M-Ge
Awesome!. Thanks for the link!… Best wishes to you, Aquileana 😎
interesting to compare with Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge in Hindu mythology.
Liked your video too 😉
There might be analogies, indeed… I will search Saraswati online soon!.
Thank you very much, Dhyan. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Sometimes there are, analogies, sometimes it is, surprisingly indeed, only our human minds wishing to unify everything.
Saraswati is the consort of Brahma, Sarah is the wife of Abraham. Coincidence? Who knows. But sometimes it is just nice to see similarities and differences.
Absolutely… And I truly believe there are common patterns when it comes to mythology and religion!…
Thanks Dhyan!… All the very best to you! ~ Aquileana 😀
Enhorbuena por este estupendo post!
Muchas gracias, Nicoletta!. Un abrazo para vos! Aquileana 😀
Great post. Athena, is , if fact , the symbol of most important university in Rome : “La Sapienza” (wisdom). Nice video.

Athena has been a favorite, as there is a very small farming community next to my home town called Athena (pop., 1,100 ~ a Scottish community), and I always liked that name. I knew it was a name of a Goddess, but just did not know how cool of a Goddess she was until this post 🙂
I still will carry on with my love of the Sirens, but with Athena by my side I do not think any harm with come of me.
This is such an informative and such a beautiful post…although the thought that Athena emerged full-grown from his forehead is a little strange, it doesn’t change my feelings at all…I think I am in love with Athena 🙂
Cheers!
Hi Dalo!… Your comment is so clever… So a town called Athena?!, very neat… And even more considering that it is not located in Greece 😳
You are right with regard to Athena’s birt: odd and quite scary, I’d say!.

Hi dear Lady Sighs!… Reading that you think my name should be Athena is a compliment!… Well, my avatar in WP is based on her… Even though when she is called Aquileana (Being strict it would be a sort of hybrid resulting from Achilles and Athena!).
It was my pleasure to add your poem. Thanks for letting me do so!. I think your poems are beautiful and a great summary of the main topics here!.
All the best to you & happy weekend, Aquileana 😀
I should have recognized that about your avatar. 🙂 I don’t know which goddess or mythical character I would choose to be. Perhaps one of the Muses. 🙂

Hi Aquileana! A most timely post. I recently purchased a copy of Fitzgerald’s translation of “The Odyssey” (per Symbol Reader’s recommendation) and plan on reading it soon. I have a few reading projects I’d like to finish up first. I plan of writing a post after each 24 books contained in the epic, similar to what I did when reading Joyce’s “Ulysses.” Anyway, hope you are well and thanks for sharing another wonderful and inspiring post.
Jeff
That is a wonderful think to know dear Jeff!… I’ll stay tuned and can’t wait to see what you come up with!… Thanks for dropping by … All the very best to you! Aquileana ;D

Athena brings an image of ‘wise balance’ to the mind, bold and beautiful!
There was a book store by the name ‘Minerva’ in the town where I spent my childhood years. The name makes sense now, never paid much thought to the ‘why’ behind Minerva before. Many Thanks for sharing Aquileana; Have a beautiful day!
I love to read your comment… Very thoughtful and clever… And yes, Minerva is the Roman equivalent of Athena … So, that’s the explanation!… Thanks for dropping by!…Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Great post and video too.
Now I know, you’re reality… 😉
Have a nice weekend too!
Thanks a lot for dropping by!… Oh, yes I do exist! 😛
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Oh, thank you for the nomination and the mention!
The story of Athena is amazing, I had totally forgotten it.

Hello dear Aquileana!
Athena is one of my favourite characters in Greek mythology, so it’s extra-special to learn more of her story. As always, I am amazed by the details you provide, while keeping it so interesting and fun ❤ Thank you, my friend. Wish you a wonderful weekend.
Warmly,
Takami 🙂
Bisous, Aquileana
Aw!… Merci pour ces belles mots Elisabeth…
Oui, une déesse de la sagesse, certainement!. Bisous et bon dimanche! ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Aqui!!! I just see it now you have a new post, yayyyy! OR, as I say, AWE 🙂 AND your video is maaaarvelous, daaaaaarling! SEEEEEE I knew it! You are bright star, just as I knew. LOVE IT! I also learned more about Athena. Wow, she was born out of Zeus’ skull – wow! What a tale, and I do not think it right that he swallowed the fetus to begin with. Also, great artwork. AND congratulations on the awards! OH and nice you linked to LadySigh’s blog as she is also doing mythological poems now. Thanks for your beautiful post… Hmmm what else?!! 🙂 ❤ There, that's what else — hugs! xo
Hi Chris!… Thanks for the beatiful comment and for your encouraging words as regard to the video… (before and after!)
Oh yes, imagine the headache Zeus might have had after giving birth! … 😛 Quite odd, indeed!… Anyhow I am truly glad to know that you enjoyed the post and also liked Lady Sighs’ poem. I think she has is talented when it commes to these kind of mythological poems she writes!
Hmmm what else?: many hugs & love to you, that’s what else! …
Aquileana 😀

Have a great weekend, Aquileana! A Great post about Athena; I ❤ owls as her 'Vehicle/Motif.' Lovely, Enjoy! XxKa
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your accurate comment!.
You are right as to the owl!… Now we know why Romans used the metaphor “the rising of Minerva’s Owl”.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Love this post Aquileana! Athena has been our favorite Goddess, Keats refers to her in one of his poems as extremely beautiful. I didn’t know all these details you have shared about her. My little grand daughter has been named Athena, so my attachment to this name is very profound.
Thanks for all the information about ‘Athena.’
Hi dear Balroop… Do you remember which was the poem… Is it “Ode to a Greek Urn”, maybe?… Thanks for the great comment and I think that Athena is a perfect name!… So nice that your grand daughter’s name is Athena, just wonderful choice!… All the very best to you and thanks for dropping by!, Aquileana 😀
I think it is Endymion.
⭐ The eating of the fetus is very bizarre. Zeus deserved the headache that made his head split in two.
Well, one thing I have learned here on your blog is not to put anything past a Greek God. It seems they will do whatever is necessary to maintain their power. (Sounds like modern government in may ways) ⭐
Athena is depicted as a handsome woman, but certainly not a beauty. I always thought she would be a beauty, Turns out I was right, but not in the way I had thought. Her inner being is the true beauty. She is a very appealing Goddess!
Great post and many wonderful wishes to you! xoxo ⭐
Thanks for the outstanding comment dear Resa… You are right as regard to Greek Gods and how their behaviour might remind us of politicians and government nowadays… Struggling for power, always and above all.
As to Athena, I think the adjective “handsome” fits her well… She was appealing in a sort of manly way!. Best wishes to you and happy weekend! Aquileana 😀
🙂 Have a wonderful weekend dear Aquileana!
Wisdom is knowledge with purpose
Very well said, dear Carl!. Thank you very much!. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
my favourite of all in the pantheon and you do her more than justice

Fascinating Post on Athena, a Greek goddess whose moral and military superiority to Ares derived in part from the fact that she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill, whereas Ares represented mere blood lust.
Thank you very much for reblogging this post, dear Linnea! All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Athena had such a flamboyant beginning. Thank you for reminding us. I hope Athena is protecting Athenes, at the moment. It is in great need of help. Have a good weekend Aquileana:)

Athena’s my girl. I always thought that I identified with her the most. She or Diana. It is such fun reading your posts. Thank you for keeping mythology cool, my friend. ♡
Hi Audrey… I can related too!… That’s why my avitar has her image!… (Aquileana is for Achilles, so it is an hybrid) 🙂
Thank you very much for dropping by!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
If Zeus’ skull-delivery of Athena is a mythological marvel, your video clip, aqui, is a cyber magic by itself. Athena in Greece, Minerva in Rome, Ganesh, the elephant-headed God of wisdom in India will make for an impressive gallery. Thanks for another informative post…best wishes… Raj.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, Raj!.
I truly appreciate your words. And I am happy to know that you liked the post and the little video!
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Aquileana 😀
Awesome post Aquileana!
I was speaking with another friend recently about the painting of The Birth of Venus, and the Rilke poem titled after it, which suggests Venus/Aphrodite was also born full grown. Her birth was also very strange.
I understand how Athena was born with an adult’s intellect, but I was wondering at some of the other god’s births. Were the majority of them born as adults?
I know that sometimes the gods and goddesses could be temperamental, and I was trying to understand why the Greeks and Romans depicted them this way, as it seems like it mirrors humanness at it’s worst.
I would think that they would want the divine to be more perfect, but I wondered if many of the gods and goddesses didn’t have an actual childhood, and if there have been theories posed that you know of, on why they seemed so out of control sometimes. I wondered if it might have been because they were basically children in adult’s bodies, not having had life experience that the humans had, to grow and mature and discern and learn more clearly the consequences of right and wrong, being trained by parents in virtues like patience and self-control.
I think I really like Minerva, because she seemed so mature, being the goddess of wisdom. I think I had heard about her birth, but had forgotten about it!
Best wishes as always my friend!
Ry
Dear Ry!~ Thanks for the clever comment!…. I hadn’t heard of that version of Aphrodite’s birth according to which she was born as an adult!… The most commonly spread version, tells that she was born out of the god Uranus’ genitals, after having been cut and thrown into the sea by his son Chronos. Those sexual organs mingled with the waves and created a foam from which the goddess was born. Some claim, indeed, that the etymology of the goddess’ name comes from the Greek word for foam, that is, ἀφρός /aphrós, hence, “Aphrodite”.
It is interesting that you wonder about the Gods’ childhoods as, you are right, they tend to behave as adults (in vices and virtues)… I would say that I can now just picture in my mind Dionysius and Eros as kid gods!.
Following your thoughts above, I’d say that Athena was certainly a virtuous goddess… Fair and wise, she fought against vices as you can see in the painting by Mantegna I added on the post! (“Pallas and the Vices” or “Minerva Expelling the Vices from the Garden of Virtue”, by Andrea Mantegna) Probably Athena’s overall correct and fair behavior explains why she was worshipped among athenians.
All the very best to you … Have a great week ahead, Aquileana 😀
Thanks! Yeah, I know some had childhoods, like Hercules, though he was half-god!
You have a great week too my friend, best wishes!
Ry
Oh! … one question: Did you watch the litte video I attached here on my post?… Aquileana 😀
I did! I was confused if you were saying bye in the sense of you not going to blog anymore, but as that wasn’t stated clearly, I didn’t assume it!
Ry
LOL… Oh yes someone mentioned the same thing! I chose the wrong title I guess… But well… At least I hope that you enjoyed it. Cheers dear Ry! 😛 Aquileana ⭐
Aquileana 😀
I did not know that Athena was born out of Zeus’s head. A little creepy, but cool all the same. Beautiful art, once again. Wonderful piece.
Indeed Creepy, cool and I would add “odd” too!. I am truly glad to know that you liked the post, Noelle.
Thanks a ot for dropping by!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Happy Valentine’s Day, Jake!!! ⭐
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
[…] “Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge” by Willem De Poorter. (17th century). […]
Marvellous post, Aquileana, as always. What a strange birth! Popped out of Zeus’s head grown up and fully dressed. To my mind, if she was a goddess of wisdom, she shouldn’t have been a goddess of war – to be at war is not wise. But I forget the sad fact about human nature – wars have been around since time immemorial. Further reading tells me that Athena’s position was to advance intelligent strategies in the defence of cities. So she was not bellicose like Ares.
Anyway, today’s Valentine’s Day, so I’d better think about Aphrodite and her son Eros. 🙂
Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤ Hugs, Irina
Dear Irina!… You are right … It is quite odd that she was related to Wisdom and War at the same time, but as you have well highlighted her intelligence may be useful to protect the cities (Nedless to say that Athena was was Athens’ protector and guardian!)…
Besides, she was also considered Goddess of Practical Reason and that’s when your statement as to “the art of war” and the consequent strategies and plan to follow come all together!. Happy Valentine’s Day. You are right: Aphrodite is a good option for February 14th!!!!. Hugs to you. Aquileana 😀
Always a pleasure to read your response to my comment. Hugs, Irina 🙂
Hugs right back at you, dear Irina…
Aquileana 😀

Thank you very much!. I truly appreciate your words… All the best to you. Aquileana 🙂
Of course! 😆😆
Athena is one of my favorites because she emerges from Zeus’s forehead. About as logical a creation for the Greek gods as it gets. Thanks for yet another great post!
All best,
Bryan
Indeed, and her birth from Zeus’ skull explains why she was the Goddess of Wisdom and Reason… Cause, effect!.
Thanks a lot for dropping by, dear Bryan!. All the best to you. Aquileana 🙂

Absolutely the best birth in history! I love Zeus getting a headache and coming up with the genius solution of having his head split open!? Luckily, that guy didn’t end up being the god of medicine… can you imagine?? 😛
Btw I was worried when I saw you were saying ‘hi and bye’ – I thought ‘if Aquileana says goodbye to blogging where shall I go to get my mythological refresher course..?’ 🙂
All the best!
LOL Sue… Too funny!… Well remember that he was the Ruler of gods, therefore Omnipotent…

Aquileana I have never read about such a strange birth before. I learn something new yet again from your post. Thanks.
Thnaks for dropping by and leaving a comment… It is an odd birth indeed. I bet Zeus had a terrible headache after his daughter’s birt 🙂
Bets wishes! Aquileana 😀
Wonderfully detailed post. Such a weird birth!
Even Indian epics mention many eye-popping births. Aspermatogenic births, non uterine births, birth through thigh, birth in earthern pots –and what not!
Is Athena also associated with athletics?
Hello my friend,
this week I made another gorgeous recipe:
4 vegetable salt cake: with mushrooms, beans and potatoes ecc.
I liked them so much!!!!
I wish you a wonderful week end
here is coldy and rainy but we’re waiting for spring;
my favorite season.

I didn’t know that was how she was Born,I love learning these things,xx Rachel
Hi Rachel!. Thank you very much for dropping by!. Glad to know that you enjoyed the mythological delivery.
Sending you and Speedy all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Ano, tahle bohyně, drží dnes Evropu v kleštích, má své ruce nad ní a lidé nevidí, neslyší a obrazně řečeno zapomněli, že je vlastně zlá, ve své válečné zbroji.
So true… Hard times for Europe and many other places in the world… But hopefully, Wisdom (followed by Virtue and peace) will prevail!.
All the best to you, dear Anna. Happy week ahead ⭐ Aquileana 😀
But hopefully, (followed by Virtue and peace) will prevail!.I am a Christian, I have faith. Old myths fun but and were wise.
Absolutely… I also hope that and want to believe things will get better!… Much love, dear Anna! Aquileana ⭐

All my bets wishes and thanks for dropping by!~ Aquileana 😀
Great post! This woman was my first childhood heroine. My dad had 4 daughters–headaches for sure. How I love this blog!
Hi Catherine… Thanks you very much for your words. They mean a lot to me and I truly appreciate them!.
I am pleased to knpw that you liked the post… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Fantastic post, Aquileana 🙂 I learn something new everyday, which by the way is simply my way of saying, ‘I don’t know why Athena managed to slip under my Greek gods and goddess radar!’ But she is definitely a fine example of a strong woman.
Also, I couldn’t resist quoting you in your own blog:
“Athena’s moral and military superiority to Ares derived in part from the fact that she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill, whereas Ares represented mere blood lust.
Athena thus appears here as war goddess, who fights alongside the Greek heroes. She is the divine form of the heroic, martial ideal: she personified excellence in close combat, victory, and glory.”
Beautiful. I really enjoyed reading this post. Thanks again! 🙂
Good morning from Australia. I am honoured that you nominated me among so many other blogs, for the Mental Paradise Award Blog Friends Award.
I do appreciate this, however I have made a decision not to participate in any more awards. But, I will be reading more of your post, and exploring those you have nominated.
Thank you again.
Yvonne
I totally understand… And all is completely fine!. 😛
Thanks for dropping by, Yvonne!… Glad to read your comment!… All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
I’m just reading about Athena, right now! I had a blog post about a strange insect I found in my garden. It can reproduce by parthenogenesis, and someone in their comments mentioned Athena! I love the comments section of our blogs.
“The mother of Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars‘ Darth Vader of course) supposedly produced him by parthenogenesis. A sort of immaculate conception but without the angel Gabriel announcement. The Parthenon of course celebrates Athena the Maiden, though she was born fully formed from Zeus’ head — what’s that about?!”
Very interesting!…
Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization…
I don’t know the particular case of the insect you mention!.. But that would strictly entrain mode of asexual reproduction in which offspring are produced by females without the genetic contribution of a male.
In Athena’s case Zeus contributed genetically and later on she ate his wife fetus and put it up in his head for nine months, until Athena was born…
Thus, the analogy you found is eloquent, but not totally accurate~
All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Excellent post! Great to know about the birth of Athena. The paintings are marvelous. Your video is one of the best blogger videos I have ever seen. Best wishes to you, too. More power and strength to you, Aquileana. Take care.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!. I feel on Cloud Nine 😀
Your words mean a lot to me dear Mahesh… Gracias! … Hugs to you. Aquileana 😀
Leaving you anote here to ask you if you can please edit my last comment on your blog as there are typos such as mena instead of mean all those related to the order of the letters… Also in one sentence I meant to say: “You can see at someone but you can’t see beneath”…
Sorry!… Best to you. Aquileana 😀
Okay 😄Take care!
Thanks you too dear Mahesh ⭐ Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Interesting headache cure!
Que tengas una buena semana, Aquileana!
Certainly!!!! 🙂 Thanks a lot for dropping by, dear Graham!.
Te deseo una excelente semana!. Abrazo, Aquileana 😀
Hello precious Aquileana! I love the Goddess of Wisdom. Something interesting that I noticed once in Proverbs in the bible wisdom is referred to as SHE. I love your posts and all your beautiful illustrations! Blessings to you sweet friend! 😀 ♡♡♡♡
Merci for the beautiful comment dear Michelle…
I didn’t know that Wisdom was personified in the Bible and referred to as “she”… Vey interesting and thanks for sharing that information!.
I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… All the best to you. Hugs, my friend!. Aquileana 😀
Well I am not one to quote the bible to people at all but I thought it was so interesting this post of yours because I recently was listening to this and it caught me by surprise.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Proverbs 4:7-9 NIV
Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”
I think what shocked me was that in the fields I work in most men think of women as weaker and less wise…when I heard and read this I thought well don’t tell the dudes I work with that wisdom is a woman but it makes sense to me somehow! I love your post! I do! 😀
Aquileana 😛
Not surprisingly, I learned the most about Athena on my trip to Athens in 2012. I remember being told how large the statue of her was that was in the Parthenon, but that was just a number. A few years later, I made it to Nashville, Tennessee and visited the “fake” Parthenon that was built for the World’s Fair. Even better is the statue of Athena that’s inside.
Hi dear JWB!. Thanks for the great feedback… I had no idea there is an old Parthenon in Nashville (a sort of Vegas thing or something?).
Always great to read your words… Vielen Dank, liebling! Aquileana 😀
No, not too Vegas-like, but it was built out of poured concrete. It was only supposed to be temporary for the World’s Fair, but the people in Nashville decided they liked their Parthenon replica and fought to keep it and restore it. I’ll send you some pics of the Athena statue tomorrow if I think about it.
Oh, I understand now… I will search it online but, of course, I’d love to see your pics as well.
Oh also thanks for the tweets!… Very nice to see them!…
Merci Jeri… All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
Thanks @JeriWB for sending me the photo of the Athena of Nashville, via Twitter!. Aquileana 😀

Vielen Dank, Gislinde… Ich wünsche dir eine gute neue Woche.
Liebe grüße ⭐ Eine Umarmung, Aquileana 😛
Hello there, I hope your Monday is well, it is nice to put a voice and facial movements to your words my friend. The birth story is strange to say the least, I wonder what the original storytellers were trying to get at. I wonder how much wisdom Zeus was left with after Athena was born.
Hi Ste! Thanks, my friend… I am glad to know that you liekd the little video… I just thought it would be nice to give it a shot, you know!.
Oh that Zeus, I bet he had a huge headache after giving birth to Athena… And you are right, probably he also lost a good amount of intelligence and wisdom!~
All the very best to you… Happy week! ⭐ Aquileana 😀

Bonne semaine!.
Amitiés. Aquileana 😀
I didn’t realize she was associated with the snake. And so much rich information here, thank you. Reading your post made me aware that Athena perhaps embodies the best part of warrioress-that which moves from a place of wisdom rather than domination/control.
Thanks dear Diahann~
I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the mythological delivery and that you lerant a few new facts with regard to Athena!.
You insights are eloquent… I pretty much agree with you… Athena’s powers as to war were were mostly based on shrewd strategies, smart plans and strategic planning rather than on random, purely spontaneous actions!… All my best wishes to you!, thanks for dropping by! Aquileana 😀
Ok, you are just too cute! Nothing less than I expected you to be. Loved your little video ❤ As for your brilliant analysis of Athena, no doubt she was brilliant – emerging from Zeus' head 🙂
Woot~ Thanks Deb… So happy to know that you enjoyed the video… Thanks for your words…
Also great to know that you liked the mythological feature on Athena!. Hugs and best wishes for your week. Aquileana 😀
Wishing you the same pretty girl! xo
In the long run, intellectual war is much more effective than violent blood lust. Another stellar post, Aquileana. Gracias. 🙂
Indeed, very well said, Julie… Muchas gracias a vos!

Thanks so much, Ralph!…. Great to know that you liked it!. All the best to you, Aquileana 😀
I did. It was lovely 😀
Thank you, Ralph! Hugs! ⭐ Aquileana 🙂
fascinating read as always – I’d not heard that Athena came from Zeus’ head – that’s a new one for me…! the version I’d heard was that she burst from his thigh – either way, it makes for interesting contemplation! I have to admit I prefer Artemis to Athena, but I like Athena’s warrior-like qualities. I think our English Britannia figure is based on Athena…
Hi dear Freya!… It is an odd birth indeed… Oh and Artemis is a good choice indeed. I will have to write about her soon as I still haven’t done so.
Thank you very much for dropping by!. I am really pleased to know that you liked the post… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Mi querida A.
(As always).
LOL… Abrazo muy grande. Aquileana 😀
Hola A.
Gracias por el link, nena. Me encantó leerlo.
Un beso que aguarda un nuevo post. 😉
Oh Vero… 😛 … Gracias nena, Abrazos grandes, Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana,
Those are absolutely superb pairings and accompanied with great text. Greek mythology, just like what we have in India is hugely fascinating. What would you say might have been the motivation for such tales? Storytelling with some moral?
Shakti
Hi Shakti!… Well, I think there are always valuable morals among these greek myths… I am sure that the same thing applies to indian Mythology!. I truly appreciate your words. Thanks a lot for dropping by… Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 🙂
Bonjour Amalia.
Aquileana 🙂
We know have authors like Rick Riordan for young readers who have incorporated these mythological characters into their story line. It is the story of their half human children which train in a place called camp halfblood. The girls are researching mythology eagerly because of the books. We are glad we found you.
So interesting to know about Rick Riordan… a very original approach, indeed!… Thanks a lot for dropping by… I truly appreciate your words.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 🙂
Thank you so much for your wonderful response.
Gros bisous,Bernard http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/427689c1089c81.gif
Merveilleuses mots Bernard! ⭐ J’ aime bien l’ image aussi… Merci beaucoup… Bon vendredi et week-end!. Aquileana 🙂
Okay I made it (to the bottom of the comment section, lol) You are well loved and admired (deservedly so, I might add). You are intelligent, scholarly, fun, and extremely, wonderfully interactive with those who stop by. Include me in that group too. 🙂 Loved your video and hearing/seeing you speak. Just as I imagined you’d be! Take care of you … all my love, Penny 🙂 xx

That first portrait is so endearing, and then you produce that amazing variety of sculptures, Aquileana 🙂 And even a poem from Esther! 🙂 Brilliant post!
Thank you very much dear Jo!~ I much appreciate your comment!… I am happy to know that you liked LadySighs’ poem and the post!. Best wishes, Aquileana 🙂
I hadn’t known, or at least hadn’t internalized, the link between Athena and owls until I was involved with my Love, who’s a philosopher and so knows of Athena and owls as symbols of the profession.
Interesting points… Thanks for highlighting them, dear Joseph… All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
I wonder if the expression wise owl comes because Athena, in all her wisdom, was associated with the owl.
Another interesting post, Aquileana. I can see from all your comments that i am not alone in thinking this. 🙂
I am quite sure it does, dear Carol…
Thanks for dropping by and for your beautiful comment… All my best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Buongiorno cara Aquileana
Another wonderful overview of Athena 😀 She and Dionysus are the two gods born from Zeus. Your series on the Greeks gods and goddesses keeps reaffirming why I love mythology.
And the pictures you add are brilliant 😀
Abraccio
ciao

So Many wonderful awards here Aquileana too..
I was amazed, or maybe not when you said Athena was born fully formed and out of her fathers head Meaning perhaps the Birth of ideas?? arrgh and there’s that Golden Apple again.. 🙂 I am also pleased she represented the virtues of Skill and justice instead of her counterpart in blood lust.
I loved reading.. and enjoyed so much the statues and paintings.. Thank you so much for my History lesson dear friend.. xxx
Hugs Sue xxx
Hi there dear Sue ⭐ Thanks a lot for dropping by…
Your comment regarding the Birth of Ideas makes much sense to me… particularly if we keep in mind that Athena was born from Zeus’ head and that she was considered the Goddess of Wisdom and Intelligence!.
Oh yes the Golden Apple is a classic topic, isn’t it?… Well Athena was one of the three Goddess in the Judgement of Paris, so there we have the apple, again!… I love reading your words, dear friend and I much appreciate them.

I have always loved the story about Athena`s birth. Great post. 🙂
Thank you very much dear Aditix ⭐
I am happy to know that you liked the post… All the best to you. Aquileana 🙄
I’m so glad you blogged on her. I’m trying to learn more about Greek mythology and from what little I know so far she is one of my favorites! Oddly, Artemis is another favorite — odd, I say since it looks like they are opposites. Maybe I’m looking for balance?
Hi Georgia
Thanks for dropping by … I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the feature… Athena is my favorite Goddess… No wonder why my avatar is inspired on her (well, to be more precise, it is a sort of hybrid resulting from Achilles and Athena … 🙄 )… Artemis is a good choice as well, the haunter Goddess… You are right, they both seem to be opposite poles somehow … I will have to post on her as I still haven’t done so… All the best to you. Aquileana 😀
⭐ Aquileana 😀
I wasn’t familiar with the circumstances of Athena’s birth – that is strange! I like that she represented mercy rather than harshness.
Hi Janna. She was related to Practical Reason and above all with Wisdom…. And Mercy was thus one of her most consistent attributes. You are right.
Glad to know that you enjoyed the reading. Thanks for dropping by. All the best to you, Aquileana 😀
Well done my Dear 😉
Hola Tin!… Aquileana 😀
Very interesting information also paintings are masterpieces of art! Thank you so much for sharing with us.
I also watched the video and I was glad to hear your voice!
All the best to you, dear Aquileana. Ştefania ❤ 🙂

She is needed today. “she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war”
Indeed, she is a good Reminder in that sense, dear Donna. Thank you… Very well stated. Best wishes. Aquileana 😀

Thanks dear Angie… Cyber hugs to you! Aquileana 😀

Hi Jane ⭐ Thanks a lot for dropping by!… I am pleased to know that you liked the post… Sending you love and wishing you a great day! Aquileana 😀
Love this Athena post too! Another image you may appreciate is the fantastic replica in Nashville of the Athena Parthenos from the Acropolis Parthenon. It is quite breathtaking in person, and the Nashville Parthenon is an exact replica of the one in Athens except it is constructed of concrete made with local brownish sand rather than Pentelic marble.
Hi Jane…. Oh yes a fellow blogger, Jeri Walker Bickett, told me about it and she even shared a photo on Twitter.
Here it is: https://twitter.com/JeriWB/status/568559978920820736. Sending you all my best wishes and thank you very much for dropping by!… Happy weekend. Aquileana 😀
Aquileana 😀
