►Greek Mythology: “Poseidon, The God of Sea”:
__________________________________________________________________________
Poseidon (Roman equivalent: Neptune), was a son of Cronos and Rhea and brother of Zeus, Hades, Hera, Hestia and Demeter.
Poseidon was the god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses.
Being the ruler of the sea, he was described as gathering clouds and calling forth storms, but at the same he has it in his power to grant a successful voyage and save those who are in danger.
He was further regarded as the creator of the horse, and was accordingly believed to have taught men the art of managing horses by the bridle, and to have been the originator and protector of horse races.
The common tradition about Poseidon creating the horse states that when Poseidon and Athena disputed as to which of them should give the name to the capital of Attica, the gods decided, that it should receive its name from him who should bestow upon man the most useful gift.
Poseidon their created the horse, and Athena called forth the olive tree, for which the honour was conferred upon her.
Homer says in the “Odyssey” that the palace of Poseidon was in the depth of the sea near Aegae in Euboea.
The symbol of Poseidon’s power was the trident, or a spear with three points, with which he used to shatter rocks, to call forth or subdue storms.
He was depicted as a mature man of sturdy build with a dark beard, and holding a trident.
He was also represented on horseback, or riding in a chariot drawn by two or four horses.
Poseidon was married to Amphitrite, by whom he had three children, Triton, Rhode, and Benthesicyme, but he also had a good number of children by other divinities and mortal women.

“Hear, Poseidon, ruler of the sea profound, whose liquid grasp begirds the solid ground; who, at the bottom of the stormy main, dark and deep-bosomed holdest they watery reign. Thy awful hand the brazen trident bears, and sea’s utmost bound thy will reveres. Thee I invoke, whose steeds the foam divide, from whose dark locks the briny waters glide; shoe voice, loud sounding through the roaring deep, drives all its billows in a raging heap; when fiercely riding through the boiling sea, thy hoarse command the trembling waves obey. Earth-shaking, dark-haired God, the liquid plains, the third division, fate to thee ordains. ‘Tis thine, cerulean daimon, to survey, well-pleased, the monsters of the ocean play. Confirm earth’s basis, and with prosperous gales waft ships along, and swell the spacious sails; add gentle peace, and fair-haired health beside, and pour abundance in a blameless tide”. (Orphic Hymn 17 to Poseidon).~

Thanks a lot, Aquileana. You and your blog obviously deserved so, and more!
Thank you very much dear José. I am wihsing you a great weekend!, Aquileana 😀
wonderful story Aquileana and lovely orphic hymn!! Poseidon is so powerful and of course he had a role in the fall of Troy( the horse?) but also the Trojans had displeased him I believe! I love the images you have posted too!!
Hi Cybele! You are right regarding the early mention regarding the Trojan War… As far as I am concerned, In Homer’s Iliad he is almost as important as Zeus, but weaker. Thank you very much for dropping by. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Poseidon was always one of my favorites, probably because I love the ocean so much. It’s fun to think of him in his palace under the sea.
It is indeed, dear Sheila!… I’d love to dive deep into that Palace though!.
Thank you very much for dropping by!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Reblogged this on yofumoenpipa.
Thanks a lot for reblogging this post dear Lupe!~ Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
😉😄😊😊😊
Thank you very much, Aquileana!
Poseidon is favorite too. I always thought of him as the strongest.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
I agree with you: Poseidon is a strong and also a favorite to me!.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
my favorite*
🙂 …. Understood it!~ Aquileana 😛
Lovely researched article, this made me remember a Poseidon show I saw once when I was little in Disney, Universal or Sea World I can’t remember which one I’ve been intrigued by the story ever since. Brava 😊
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment, dear Charlotte!.
Now I am intrigued about which show you are making reference to. 😉
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Have you noticed how often Poseidon is featured as scowling or angry. I know Poseidon deals with storms and rough weather – but he rule the seas at other times, too and the open sparkling waters can be pretty soothing, too. I think needs a new PR person.
Always enjoy your research.
What a ready-witted comment…. You are right as to his depictions… He seems to have a bad temper or something.
Even in the statues I added in the Slideshare he looks scowling!. Interesting point and thanks for highlighting it.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
I know he also rules Hades, but you’d think just the thought of having more arrivals from his storms and waves would cheer him. I need to do some research and find out why he’s always so grim (like it scares anyone…he should know that. Giggles!)
And by logical exclusión: I’ll let you know if I come across any image, sculpture and/or painting in which he smiles a little bit… All the best to you, Aquileana 😀
As always, great research. I image the photos alone were overwhelming to examine. Great choices … love the resemblance among the fountains.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your clever comment!.
I always like to read your thoughts dear Frank!
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Greek mythology has always fascinated me. Good blog!
Thank you very much Mystafied. I truly appreciate your words.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 🙂
Poseidon is one of my favorites which seems a bit funny having grown up on the prairies in Canada. However I became a lifeguard and at the time we were studying Greek mythology. I often ‘talked’ to Poseidon looking for strength in my swimming. 🙂
A lifeguard, really?… You never cease to amaze me dear Sue ❤
Now you need to sign me an autograph, for sure…. 😀
Thank you very much for dropping by. And great to know that you enjoyed the feature!.
I hope you are having a great weekend so far!. Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Aquileana you are the famous one with tens of thousands of followed here and in social media! You shall be signing the autographs my friend.

Poseidon, commonly named Neptune is one of the most popular characters in Mythology, “the big guy with the trident” I remember that when I was just a child. As always my dear Aquileana you are the best! Big hug for you! 🙂
Maybe you were afraid of the guy of the trident as also the depictions of the Devil show him holding one… Oh, too scary for a kid indeed.
Thank you very much for dropping by dear HJ. I hope you are having a great weekend so far!. Hugs & Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Congratulations on your much deserved award my friend. Your blog is incredible! Poseidon’s Arch on Naxos in Greece was the most amazing monument to him that I have seen. He is a faulous figure isn’t he!
I hope one day I can see Poseidon’s Arch on Naxos by myself dear Cindy. Thanks for adding that reference!.

Thank you very much, dear John!~ Your words mean a lot to me~
Abrazo grande y buen fin de semana, Aquileana 😀
I’ve always found it strange that Poseidon was attributed to creating the horse. Yet at the same time, I can see their power represented in crashing waves (as portrayed in the movie Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring). Perhaps this has a deeper connection, like to seahorses washing ashore to become land animals. But then again, I’m probably just overanalyzing.
Thanks for another great post.
Take care,
Bryan
Hi dear Bryan!.
Well the common sources state that he created the horse as he was competing with Athena to get his own name as the name of the capital of Attica (actually Athens, capital city of Greece). As you can read on my post:
“The common tradition about Poseidon creating the horse states that when Poseidon and Athena disputed as to which of them should give the name to the capital of Attica, the gods decided, that it should receive its name from him who should bestow upon man the most useful gift… Poseidon their created the horse, and Athena called forth the olive tree, for which the honour was conferred upon her”.
I would say that Poseidon’s stormy gifts are pretty much alike wild galloping horses. And that horse probably symbolize wildness.
As to the Seahorses they were surely related to The Greek God of Sea…
“In the Iliad, Homer describes Poseidon, who was god of horses (Poseidon Hippios), earthquakes, and the sea, drawn by “brazen-hoofed” horses over the sea’s surface” (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocampus_%28mythology%29 )
And furthermore:
“Hippokampoi (seahorses) were the mounts of Nereid nymphs and sea-gods, and Poseidon drove a chariot drawn by two or four of the beasts”.
(Source: http://www.theoi.com/Ther/Hippokampoi.html)
Oh and as to overanalyzing, I am like you!… Well that is probably a legacy that Freud and his psychoanalysis left us!… 😉
Thanks a lot for dropping by. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Always a pleasure to read your posts. I never fail to learn something, and you never fail to prove my thoughts.
Internet high Five 🙂 Best regards Bryan!, Aquileana 😀

You have a great week Aqui 🙂
Hello, Aquileana. You certainly enriched my knowledge about Neptune with your post. I have encountered a lot more of him in Rick Riordan’s Perry Jackson novels where he was portrayed as an absentee father trying to make up for being such. My sons who love mythology will certainly like your posts and I will take time to show them your entries as part of their reading enrichment. 🙂
Best regards, Imelda
Hi dear Imelda!. Lovely to see you here… How interesting that you found ressenblances between Poseidona sn that novel by Riordan you read…
As a matter of fact ‘d say that most greek gods and goddesses have characteristics that might define them (and others) as Personality types, somehow!.
Thanks a lot for dropping by… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Another great write, Aquileana !
Thank you very much dear Chris.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😛
Poseidon ~ what a powerful God.

Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your comment!.
I truly appreciate your words, Emy~
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
It must have been a close competition between the horse and the olive tree as the most useful gift.
Indeed, but Athena won at the end! Thank you very much dear Gallivanta. All my best wishes to you~ Aquileana 😀
Stupendo post

I have always like the stories of Poseidon and his power and protection of the Seas.. I learn something new again
“He was further regarded as the creator of the horse, and was accordingly believed to have taught men the art of managing horses by the bridle, and to have been the originator and protector of horse races.”
He goes up even further in my esteem as I just LOVE Horses..
It seems he was also a bit a lad too… if he had more offspring! 🙂
Special thoughts your way Aquileana..
Love to you, Enjoy your weekend xxx
Sue
Excellent comment dear Sue…. A lad with a bad temper he was!… Even more if we keep in mind the earlier sources in which he is depicted as a bad tempered guy, pretty much like Zeus was, but maybe a little bit weaker!.
Sending love my friend!… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Love and Hugs returned.. Keep that beautiful smile wide 🙂 Enjoy your week ❤

Wow, thank you for sharing this excellently written article with so much to learn. There was a time I knew more about Greek mythology, so it was nice to revisit that time.
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
I am really pleased to know that you liked the post and that it brought you back memories regarding Greek Mythology!…
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Bon week -end!, Aquileana 😀
Neptune was his Roman equivalent:-)- interesting story of Poseidon:-)
I use Neptune Harvest in my garden ( fish emulsion + seaweed)

Now I understand the 3 prong fork!:-) thank you for sharing:-) you have a great week!
That is so interesting and such a cool connection!…
Thanks for dropping by and for your great comment Robbie.
Happy weekend and all the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
🙂
Wonderful post again, dear Aquileana! I loved looking at all the photographs of the statues of Poseidon you found. I didn’t know that Poseidon was believed to be the creator of the horse. When the sea becomes rough and the waves get white tops to them, we call the white tops ‘white horses’. Perhaps the Ancient Greeks also thought that the waves looked like horses too? I enjoyed reading the Orphic Hymn and I checked out the two blogs as well. Best wishes, Clare xx
Hi dear Clare!~ Wow thank for such a thorough comment my friend!…
You say above: “When the sea becomes rough and the waves get white tops to them, we call the white tops ‘white horses’” …
Well in spanish we just call that “espuma” (foam)… How interetsing to know that you use the expression “white horse” to make reference to it.
I am glad to know that you enjoyed the post and knowing that you liked it means a lot to me!~
All the very best to you!… Happy sunday and week ahead!, Aquileana 😀
Thank-you dear Aquileana. I enjoyed your post very much. I hope you have a happy Sunday and a good week too Clare x
It’s interesting to see how different mythologies having different Gods serving different purposes. The quest for God seems to have been the central eternal focus of our existence and the search as well as the theories go on. On a lighter note, I wondered (the god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses) if Poseidon was working overtime these days 🙂 Thanks dear Aquileana and a big hug to you.
Thanks for your clever insights regarding Gods and the consequent feeling of transcendence!.
I pretty much agree with you regarding Poseidon being very busy nowadays, even more if we keep in mind the visible effects of climate change!.
Sending hugs!, Aquileana 😀
I wondered why a sea god would be portrayed with a horse. And this was interesting from an above comment: When the sea becomes rough and the waves get white tops to them, we call the white tops ‘white horses’. The white part of the wave does kind of look like a horse’s mane. (Otherwise I don’t quite see it.)
The origin of the idea is that Poseidon and Athena were in a contest in which they disputed as to which of them should give the name to the capital of Attica… the gods had decided, that it should receive its name from him who should bestow upon man the most useful gift…
Poseidon their created the horse, and Athena called forth the olive tree, for which the honour was conferred upon her…
As Athena won the capital of Attica (Greece today) was called Athens~
As to why he kept on being associated with horses and depicted as a charioteer I’d say that probably horses symbolize wilderness, aggressiveness and primal forces…
Probably waves crashing sound also pretty much alike horses galloping! 🙂
Thanks for always bringing your clever insights Georgia…. Best wishes to you. Aquileana 😀
Great post, A. Man, do I love this God of the sea. Look at those bushy eyebrows and pouty lips! His chiseled features are so impressive. Enjoy your weekend! 🙂
Hi Audrey!~ Thanks for the eloquent words… No wonder why you are such a writer!.
All the best to you. Have a wonderful sunday and week ahead! Aquileana 😀
Wonderful writing on Poseidon, Aquileana! Have a wonderful weekend! 😀
Thank you very much dear Linda!. Wishing you a groovy weekend. Aquileana 😀

You are most welcome. Thanks for dropping by dear Shehanne. Happy to know that you enjoyed the post!.
Happy sunday and week ahead! Virtual hugs! Aquileana 😀
It’s so nice to know that you are in Argentina, Aquileana. I wonder if a vote were taken today as to which was the most useful gift: the horse or the olive tree, which would win. A tough call, I think.
Happy weekend. 🙂
The horse would definitely win nowadays!… I still think Poseidon should have won by then!… Thank you for dropping by dear Carol… Sending all my best wishes from Buenos Aires, Argentina~ Aquileana 😀
O wow. So much information about Poseidon. I had never known about this Greek God of Sea.
While reading your blog, i remembered that i have heard this name ‘Poseidon’ somewhere. In which context? After working my grey cells, i realized USA has got defence planes with this name. 🙂
Thanks a bunch dear Suyash and I found those defence planes online (Boeings P-8) !.. How neat, thanks for adding that information!.
Wishing you a great week ahead. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀

Hello dear Aquileana!

Warm wishes always,
Takami
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your gret comment, dear Takami.
I truly appreciate your words.Sending hugs !… Have a wonderful week ahead, Aquileana 😀
As a lover of mythology, that was a feast to read. And such voluptuous paintings!
Are Poseidon etc given the status of God? Our Indian Mythology do tend to elevate many heroes into Gods or demi-Gods.
In fact Poseidon’s sea palace seems similar to Krishn’s Dwarka. It was submerged undersea upon his death by a giant Tsunami.
Now research has actually discovered golden cities and pillars deep down there – which could prove that Mythology was History; and that our heroes really lived on Earth.
Hi there Dr Sweetyshinde,
Thanks for adding this information regarding Indian Mythology… I will definitely have to search on line Krishna’s Dwarka!. It is interesting how different cultures and mythologies have similar gods and goddesses, don’t you think… Oh and as to your question, Poseidon was considered a God indeed (not a demi-God)… Thanks for dropping by and all my best wishes to you~ Aquileana 😀
Yes, the strange coincidental similarities seem to stem from fact more than imagination.
I see. Are Poseidon and others open to judgment? Or are they, like Indian Gods, ‘above all law and questions’ ?
That is a good question!?… I’d say that in those ancient times All gods and Goddesses were open to judgment, including Zeus, who was the Ruler of Gods!
All my best wishes, Sweetyshinde, Aquileana 😀
Thanks! My best wishes too.
Very well pointed out! Best wishes to you, Aquileana D:

Poseidon, or at least the Poseidon I imagined, was a favorite of mine as a kid because I liked swimming and so figured, hey, sea-god, what more could you want to be? I’m still not really recovered from that attitude either.
Hi Joseph!!!~ I bet Aquaman was your favorite Superheroe then!.
Thanks for dropping and for your comment. I truly appreciate it!. All my best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Poseidon has been my favorite god since I was a kid ~ love the oceans and seas and he had the power to rule all…so this is one of my favorite posts of yours. However, with your introduction of the Sirens I am wavering now on my favorite mythical beings 🙂 Another wonderful and artistic post Aquileana ~ wish you a great coming week!
The Sirens are quite mesmerizing, aren’t they?… But we’d better be aware of their songs!… I am with you: Poseidon is also one of my favorite mythological Gods. All the very best to you, Dalo!. Happy week ahead!~ Aquileana 😀
Ha, ha…yes, you’ve hit on the biggest weakness of men, their ego…as I think that for some reason I would not be enchanted by the songs of the Sirens and thus saved 🙂
You’re right, better stick with Poseidon ~
Certainly!… Poseidon is a better ally, dear Dalo!. All the best to you~ Aquileana 😀
Besos 🙂
Perdon por la falta de ortografia !

A fabulous collection of sculptures, and so rare to see them collected by subject rather than sculptor or period. I particularly load the language in the Orphic hymn.
Thank you for dropping by and for your comment!. I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the post and liked the paintings and the Orphic hymn to Poseidon. All my best wishes, Aquileana 😀

¡A ti Aquileana! Muchas gracias a ti, igualmente… :*
I enjoyed reading this. When I was younger, I read quite a bit about Greek and Roman mythology, but it’s been many years since then. Poseidon was always an interesting one… to me, he was much less fearsome than some of them, like Zeus, for instance!
Hi Janna!. Thank you very much for dropping by!. Poseidon is a favorite indeed. I am pleased to know that you liked the post and that it brought memories back to you!… All the best, Aquileana 😀

See you soon Aquileana!
The Orphic Hymn puts the icing on the cake of your informative overview of Poseidon Aquileana, it’s a magnificent piece of prose. The big surprise for me was his association with the horse (everybody knows the Irish invented horses!) and the story of the competition against the olive tree. I live and learn, thank you.
Indeed, Poseidon’s association with the horse was certainly an unknown fact for me as well, dear Mike!.
I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the reading and liked the Orphic Hymn to Poseidon and that you also learnt a few new things on Greek Mythology!.
Thank you and all the best to you, Aquileana 😀
Mi querida A. ⭐
Me encanta tu comentario…
Aquileana 😀
Love Poseidon. He has great strength and character. Have you watched Percy Jackson and the sea of monsters? Brilliant! 🙂
Hi dear Kev~… No I haven’t … I will search for it online. Thanks for the recommendation and for dropping by!.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Have a great day ahead!~ Aquileana 😀
Buenas Dias Aquileana. 🙂
Buenas noches desde Buenos Aires, Argentina, querido Kev!. Un abrazo, Aquileana 😀
Gracias Amiga 🙂
Interesting. I knew of Athena and the gift of the olive tree, but not the part about Poseidon and the horses. Thanks for filling in another gap in my mythology knowledge 😉
My pleasure, JWB… I didn’ t know that Poseidon was related to the horses either… Mythology is certainly an inexhaustible source of knowledge, isn’t it!?.
Thanks for dropping by!. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
⭐ I have always been in awe of large bodies of water, especially the oceans and seas. I will even admit I am terrified when upon them in boats, or flying over them in planes. Therefore, Poseidon, always seemed to me to represent some of my fears.
However, as a prairie girl, I love that he is a horseman, and associated with horses which represent freedom to me.
In the end, I see he’s not totally scary, but is certainly still somewhat foreboding. ⭐
Thank you for the great post! ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
A great comment here Resa and I like the way you related Poseidon with your fears and passions… It is interesting that he represents for you a personal duality vs dichotomy somehow… Truly marvelous!… Thanks for dropping by and for your starry comment!. All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana, Great post on Poseidon and congrats on the awards. I’ve always wondered if Poseidon lived in the sea or just visited from Olympus. He sounds like a busy man with an eye for the ladies. LOL
Hi Bren~ He looks like a sort of Dandy, indeed!… I’d say he lived in the sea and visited the Olympus!…
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your clever comment!. Hugs & best wishes to you!, Aquileana 😀
To live in the sea would be to move constantly, I would think. The sea is always moving. It might be soothing or it might be irritating. Could it be the cause of his roving eye and moodiness? LOL
LOL!~ A very witty comment!… Those might be factors related with Poseidon’s roving eye and moodiness, indeed!…. Best wishes dear Bren! Have a peaceful night ahead! Aquileana 😀
And you, too. Regards, Brend
Poseidon is so big and muscular. I saw him in Versailles ages ago. Well, he was very kind to us, he granted us a successful voyage to Australia in 1964, although he made me seasick!
Great post again. Thanks, Aquileana. Hugs, Irina 🙂
Thanks fo the beautiful and witty comment dear Irina…. I much enjoyed reading it and truly appreciate it! 😛

Excellent, as usual!!! Hugs coming your way.

loved this piece about the god of the sea… made me think of Marion Zimmer’s “The Firebrand” – Poseidon plays a huge role in the story! hmmm – maybe I’ll re-read it again soon!

Wonderful post Aquileana, and beautiful pottery and paintings! My favorite piece of art in this post was “Aquarius” by Johfra Bosschart.
There are two beautiful lines on Poseidon in an excerpt of Rainer Maria Rilke’s 3rd Duino Elegy that your research reminded me of:
“O Neptune of the blood, O his trident of terrors.
O the dark storm-wind from his chest, out of the twisted conch.”
Best wishes to you as always!
Ry
Hi Ry!~ How are you…. Nice to see you… Happy to know that you enjoyed the post and thanks a lot for adding those beautiful verses by Rainer Maria Rilke…

WOW! What a good work, Aquileana – as always 🙂
Greetings,
Ulli
Thank you very much, dear Ulli!!! ~All the best to you! Aquileana 😀
You may be able to help me with something that has been bugging me for a bit, when I read The Iliad back in the day there was another water divinity who, if I remember rightly was acting in contravention to Poseidon, probably at the behest of one of the other gods. Am I right in that, I bow to your wonderfully encyclopaedic knowledge.
Hi Ste!~ That was agood question indeed and I could only thought of Thetis, who was Achilles’ mother.
So I found this list of Gods but mainly Sea Nymphs online (Source: http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/trojanwararticles/a/072610-Gods-And-Goddesses-In-The-Iliad.htm)
Oceanus (Ocean): god of the river surrounding the earth.
Nereus: sea god, father of the Nereids.
Thetis: divine sea nymph, mother of Achilles, daughter of the old man of the sea.
Nemertes: a Nereid (daughter of Nereus).
Glauce: a Nereid (daughter of Nereus).
Gygaea: a water nymph: mother of Mesthles and Ascanius (allies of the Trojans)
Halië: a Nereid (daughter of Nereus).
Limnoreia: a Nereid (daughter Proto: a Nereid (daughter of Nereus).of Nereus).
Nesaea: a Nereid (daughter of Nereus).
I would say that Thetis, Nereus and Ocean are the most important characters here!.
All the best to you! Aquileana 😀
I just spent hours perusing my copy of The Iliad and couldn’t find what I was looking for, I could possibly have misremembered it as I did read it eighteen years ago. How time flies! A reread is most certainly needed.
I am thinking that probably you were thinking of Apollo!… I don’t know why but as soon as I read your comment I thought that!~
Happy weekend dear Ste… All the best to you!, Aquileana 😀
Your posts are really fascinating stories!
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
I truly appreciate your words.
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
Aquileana,
Thank you again for sharing your wealth of knowledge on Greek mythology. It is interesting to note that Poseidon was not only the god of sea, rivers, flood and drought, but also earthquakes and horses. I had never heard he was associated with horses before and found this particularly fascinating. I always appreciate reading your brilliant articles on Greek Mythology.
Best wishes,
Linnea
I didn’t know that he was associated with horses either, dear Linnea!~
As to the stories of why he created the horses I only told one on the post (Poseidon in competition with Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, for the naming rights to the capital city of Attica, nowadays Athens)~
>But there is still another one, related to Demeter:
“Though married, Poseidon had many affairs and sought to woo Demeter, the goddess of corn and the harvest, but she was not receptive to his overtures. He created the most beautiful animal, the horse, in an unsuccessful attempt to win her heart. He eventually lost interest in Demeter”. Cheers. I will indeed get my groove on this weekend dear friend. Many blessings to you and your kin.
Thanks… Blessings and best wishes Leeby Geeby!, Aquileana 😀
This is an amazing post. I could spend a while writing about the many different ways in which I find it so geat, so I’ll just mention a couple. Not only is it an incredibly enjoyable read, it is informative and exciting. It’s obvious how much you love the subject from the reseach you must have put into it. I’m truly impressed. Poseidon is certainly a colourful character. I believe he refused to acknowledge Athena’s victory in the competition you described. Something about flooding the city until the women / goddesses who had voted for Athena backed down and gave the victory to him! Now, that’s pique for you!
Great post and wonderful pictures. 🙂
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
I truly appreciate your words and I am pleased to know that you learnt new facts on Greek mythology and also liked the post exciting!.
As to Poseidon and his competition with Athena… I agree with you, I am quite sure he was angry when he was defeated (even more considering his bad temper!)~
Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀

Well organised post as always, extensively presenting details and works of Art depicting the God of the Ocean and Earthquakes! He was second to Zeus in power and had a very irritable personality! And when ill-tempered,oh gosh,he struck the earth with his powerful weapon to cause earthquakes and punish people in revenge.Lovely mosaics included, nice to see you cited the Orphic Hymn too.Heartfelt thanks for dropping by!Here is to a wonderful new week!
Doda 🙂
Indeed Poseidon was second to Zeus in power, and in Homer’s Iliad he was almost as important as him but a little bit weaker!
I am grateful to read your thoughtful commnet tonight dear Doda… And so pleased to know that you enjoyed the reading and liked the Orphic Hymn too.
I am sending you all my best wishes!…. Have a great day ahead!, Aquileana 😀

[…] « ►Greek Mythology: “Poseidon, The God of Sea”.- […]
So, Poseidon invented the horse? Wow, I always learn something new when I drop by 🙂 And I think the guy was robbed in that competition, too – I mean how are horses not cooler than olives? 😉
The sea was always such a fascinating and sinister place in Greek myths – the Kraken, for instance; I always liked him, despite his less friendly qualities…
Thanks for sharing, as always, dear Aquileana!
Yes, Poseidon invented the horse. As I say above:
“The common tradition about Poseidon creating the horse states that when Poseidon and Athena disputed as to which of them should give the name to the capital of Attica, the gods decided, that it should receive its name from him who should bestow upon man the most useful gift… Poseidon their created the horse, and Athena called forth the olive tree, for which the honour was conferred upon her”.
I am with you: horses are not only cooler but more useful, don’t you think?
I am glad to know that you enjoyed the post!…
All the very best to you, dear Sue! Aquileana 😀

Gravity and the Moon hold such sway over his domain, water in its many forms. Peculiar, a horse, a useful animal upon land, but not in water (rivers and seas, etc). Perhaps he is saying, man/woman, do not belong on the seas of rivers, water is not for them. Perhaps seahorses were once much bigger and so he had both land and water covered. And can not forget, Pegasus, a winged horse – air, sea, and land transportation and logistics. Olive trees, static in nature but with many possibilities. Often in thought I might associate olive trees with peace and bountiful times, while horses throughout history have a strong connection with war and battle. I have read somewhere horses came from the far east thousands of years ago, perhaps they first arrived by sea on ships in the various lands of the Ancient Greeks.
Excellent comment, dear Sean!…
It is interesting that you highlight the opposition between those two symbols: The Olive Tree (Athena), symbolizing peace and bountiful times and horses (Poseidon) having a strong connection with war and battle… In this battle of force, Athena would prevail.
As to the horses and seahorses, your interpretation suggesting landslides as a possible cause is very eloquent and makes much sense to me, even more if we keep in mind the theory of the Continental Drift!…
All my best wishes to you and thanks for dropping by! Aquileana 😀

I hope you are having a nice weekend so far. Sending you all my best wishes!. Aquileana 😀
I never realized that Poseidon was credited with creating the horse. I find that interesting considering he is the God of the Sea. All of the pictures and the slide show of the statues are cool. Your posts are beautiful and informative. I am learning something about mythology 🙂
Thank you very much dear Robin ⭐
I am pleased to know that you learnt new facts on Greek Mythology and that you enjoyed the reading.
Best wishes. Have a great week ahead, Aquileana 😀
I hope you have a great week, too!
Poseidon is a favorite because of our love of the sea, but his father Cronos is what nightmares are made of. In his (Poseidon) creation of the horse we found it peculiar that he did create him to be a magical beast of the sea. These myths are simply wonderfully magical.
Thanks … Cronos was a nightmare, true that… He even ate his own children . I will be posting on Zeus soon and there I´ll be mentioning him… Thanks for the clever comment… All my best wishes. Aquileana 😀
We have been reading a lot more on the subject & enjoy visiting your blog. Keep exploring!
