►Greek Mythology: “The Sirens, Muses of the Lower World”:
________________________________________________________________________
The Sirens were sea nymphs who lured sailors to their death with a bewitching song.
They parents were River Achelous and the Muse Melpomene (Pseudo-Apollodorus). For Euripides, they were virgin daughters of Gaia (the Earth).
Their number is variously reported as between two and five.
In the “Odyssey”, Homer says nothing of their origin or names, but gives the number of the Sirens as two on an island in the western sea between Aeaea and the rocks of Scylla.
Hesiod says that they were three and that their names were Thelxiope or Thelxinoe, Molpe and Aglaophonos.
They are mantic creatures like the Sphinx with whom they have much in common, as they also were believed to combine women and birds in various ways.
In early Greek art, Sirens were represented as birds with large women’s heads, and bird feathers. Later, they were represented as female figures with the legs of birds, usually playing musical instruments, especially harps.
Pausanias in his book “Description of Greece” makes reference to a contest between the sirens and the muses. He states that the Muses won, plucked out the Sirens’ feathers and made crowns for themselves out of them.
→The Sirens are also connected with the legends of the abduction of Persephone, with the story of the Argonauts and with Homer´s “Odyssey”.
•According to Ovid (“Metamorphoses” V, 551),they were formerly handmaidens of Persephone.
When the goddess was secretly abducted by Hades, Demeter gave the sirens the bodies of birds, and sent them to assist Demeter in the search of her daughter.
This version explains why the Sirens were called “the Muses of the Lower world”.
They eventually gave up and settled on the flowery island of Anthemoessa.
In some versions, Demeter turned them into birds to punish them for not guarding Persephone.
•When the Argonauts passed by the Sirens, the latter began to sing, but in vain, for Orpheus rivalled and surpassed them ; and as it had been decreed that they should live only till some one hearing their song should pass by unmoved, they threw themselves into the sea, and were metamorphosed into rocks.
The Sirens were later encountered by the Argonauts who passed by unharmed with the help of Orpheus, the poet drowing out their music with his song. The sound of their songs was once thought to be a reason for sailors meeting disaster, as their haunting voice was heard coming from the waves forecasting bad weather.
•In Homer’s Odyssey, Book XII, Odysseus, escaped the danger of their song by stopping the ears of his crew with wax so that they were deaf to the Sirens. Odysseus himself wanted to hear their song but had himself tied to the mast so that he would not be able to steer the ship off its course.
The siren song was a promise to Odysseus of mantic truths; with a false promise that he will live to tell them, they sing:
“Once he hears to his heart’s content, sails on, a wiser man.
We know all the pains that the Greeks and Trojans once endured
on the spreading plain of Troy when the gods willed it so
all that comes to pass on the fertile earth, we know it all!”
(Homer’s “Odyssey” 12.188–91).-

I love this particular post as Ulysses is the first story of myth I recall hearing. I wonder what the song of the sirens sounded like. I guess only Ulysses knows. You always outdo yourself as you both entertain us and educate us. 🙂
I bet it was a sort of hypnotic and mesmerizing, song…
I wonder if you are already whispering a few notes (or at least thinking of them!). All the best to you for 2015!, Aquileana 😀

Anytime dear Ste!, Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Hi Aquileana,
That is interesting and I like the way the sailors avoided the sirens! But I can imagine their songs and believe that they must be very melodious, that’s why they possessed the power to lure!
Thanks for sharing, I enjoy reading these stories.
Have a wonderful 2015!
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.

Just curious, since in all the depictions the Sirens are clearly bird-women, how did “siren” become synonymous with mermaids?
Great question!~ I am glad that you highlighted that point…
Well it seems that mermaids and sirens were different creatures.

Sending you all my best wishes. Hugs, dear Sue!. Aquileana 😀
Have a wonderful New week 😉 xxx Hugs
I’m glad you wrote about the sirens. I wonder if their bird form is a harkening back to the snake/bird Goddesses of olden days- presented later on as punishment. I personally think of the sirens as muses that have been demonified. Love the picture of you at the end by the way. Happy New Year’s and thank you for your work bringing these women archetypes to life.
Dear Diahann!… A thought provoking post… I agree with your statements regarding the symbolism of the sirens being iot related to temptation and punishment. On a further note, it is interesting that also the harpies and the sphinxes had bird forms… I wonder why birds has such a bad reputation among ancient greeks (~)
All the best to you! Happy New Year ⭐ Aquileana 😀
A further Note: When you say ” I personally think of the sirens as muses that have been demonified”, you are aboslutelly right…
Check out this article in which you can read the following excerpt:
http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/02/05/the-difference-between-mermaids-and-sirens/
“The sirens were further cursed when they entered a singing competition with the Muses and lost the contest as well as their wings and many of their feathers. I personally think of the sirens as muses that have been demonified”.
Best wishes!, Aquileana 😀
;). I find that is common for many female dieties and other feminine images. Medusa, for example. And also the snake in the garden of Eden. Thanks for sharing the link!
You are most welcome… Thanks for being such a clever blogger and truly a source of inspiration to many of us.
Best wishes!, Aquileana 😀
Same to you, Aquileana!
There’s a parallel with the Harpies with the way that Greek Mythology again uses the birds to represent an evil entity. I think the birds were unjustly misrepresented in the past. Your post, regardless of my own opinion was as always excellent! Aquileana, Have a great, healthy and prosperous New Year 2015 🙂
You are so right!… Also we must add the sphinxes to the list as they also had bird forms!… Great and clever comment dear HJ. Hugs and Happy New Year Sending you all my best wishes for 2015! ⭐ Aquileana 🙂
Thanksssssss!! Happy New year!!! 🙂
All the best to you, dear Domenico! Happy New Year ⭐ Aquileana 😀

Thanks so much for bestowing the Dreamwalker’s award upon me 🙂 The sirens are very alluring, to say the least and leave it to Odysseus to be smart enough to tie himself to the mast so he could hear their call. I really love all the artwork that involves the sirens as well, but had to play it safe in the classroom when it came to my Odyssey unit.
“To play it safe with the Odyssey” … I think I understand what you mean … It is such a complex book and so full of allegories and hidden meanings..
the sirens here were probably related to temptation… but also with infidelity and adultery, I guess… Let’s keep in mind that Odysseus was married with Penelope and far away from his city Itaca… And… well overall… I think this makes sense!.
All the best to you dear JWB. Happy New Year ⭐ Aquileana 😀
Thanks @JeriWB for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😀
I thought them half fish and thought they came from the ocean’s depths. Learned new things again.
Donna!… Someone asked me about that (weren’t they half fish at the end?)… I’ll have to do a little research to see how that mythological metamorfosis happened!. All the best to you for 2015. Aquileana 😀
Interesting, they sound contrary to the legend of the Halcyon, a mythical storm bird said to calm the seas during winter. I’ve thought about getting a blue parakeet to take the place of my dog that died last August, but I think it would be too noisy like the sirens, and lead to my demise… or at least, lead to my having to get rid of it!
The black amphora reminds me of the famous Dionysus Cup amphora which I enjoy so much, with Dionysus, the god of wine on the inside of the cup, tied to the mast of a ship! Only instead of the sailors on the ship being protected, they are driven overboard with madness by vines and are turned into dolphins!
Anyway, my post today speaks of some interesting Greek mythology you may appreciate, that I’ll share a link to with you to check out when you have time, if you would like to!

A really interesting post which as always has been so well researched. I hope you are having a happy week-end. Love Clare x
Thank you very much dear Clare ❤
Sending hugs and wishing you a remarkable 2015!…
Enjoy your week ahead, Aquileana 😀
The Sirens are a piece of Greek Mythology I know about. Of course until reading this, I had the mistaken perception that they were more like mermaids, you know, part woman part sea creature.
I am quite shocked to learn they are part bird.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there are may other people misconceptualizing the Sirens.
⭐ ⭐ HAPPY NEW YEAR ⭐ ⭐
Dear Resa!. I am glad that you highlighted that point… Well it seems that mermaids and sirens were different creatures.
> It was the nereids of Greek mythology who gave rise to the tales of the mermaids that were so popular among later sailors’ mythology. These sea nymphs were given the features traditionally associated with the mermaid, half beautiful woman, half fish. These enchanting creatures were well known to mingle with humans and to bear children.
> As to the sirens, they were never half-woman and half-fish creatures. Originally, there were only three sirens, and they started out as mortal human women who were the handmaidens of Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, Demeter gifted the three girls with the bodies of birds so they could help search for the lost girl. When they couldn’t find her they eventually gave up and went to live on the island of Anthemoessa, cursed by Demeter (who was angry at their abandonment of the search) to remain in their half-bird form.
The sirens were further cursed when they entered a singing competition with the Muses and lost the contest as well as their wings and many of their feathers.
Eventually, the sirens died with the fulfillment of a prophecy that should anyone be able to resist their song, the sirens would perish. And they did; when Odysseus had his men block their ears and then tied himself to the mast of his ship so he could listen but not interfere, the sirens hurled themselves into the sea and died as he passed.

Thanks for being such a clever reader and for your support, which means a lot to me… All the best to you in 2015, my friend!. Aquileana 😀
PS> I will probably write about the Nereids and then bring into the spotlight these differences in a future post!
Dear Aquileana,
I am very excited to learn about the Nereids!
My head spins with the tales and lessons of Greek Mythology. You re a wonderful teacher & I have always thought your blog should be turned into a book at some point.
The best of 2015 to you!
I must admit I have a fascination with mermaids. I did a mermaid gown, “Atlantis Mermaid Love-in”
http://artgowns.com/2013/07/13/atlantis-mermaid-love-in/
Wish I would have known more back then!
Dear Resa,
Thanks a bunch for your support and encouragement… ⭐
As to that dress with mythological resemblances as I’d like to call it: It is absolutely stunning.
I can’t but congratulate you!. Best wishes and hugs to you. Aquileana 😀

Best regards, Aquileana 🙂
Bisous! 🙂 Merci a toi! 🙂
Interessante, giusto?… Abbraccio e buon anno!, Aquileana 😀
La cosa adesso mi torna.
Un abbraccio
Tante grazie!… Baci Newwhitebear, Aquileana 😛

I am also saying congratulations on the blog award and thank you for bestowing PP with the Inspiring award too xoxo MUAH! HNY, honey xo
Also, thank you for the kind notes on my blog today, when we met at same moment 🙂 I couldn’t reply back to you there (maybe at end of limit for one conversation?) so replied here instead. Have a wonderful night, hon xoxo

Thank you dear Aquileana for your wishes. I re-read this post and enjoyed it all the more this time. Because the opening line “The Sirens were sea nymphs who lured sailors to their death with a bewitching song” took me back to my school days 🙂
Be happy and blessed always Aquileana.

Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your beautiful comment!.
I am happy to know that you enjoyed teh reading and that this posts took you back to earlier days!
Sending you all my best wishes, dear Dilip!. Aquileana 😀
Thanks for yet another informative post. I couldn’t help but think of Margaret Atwood’s poem “Siren Song” and the three sirens in the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou?”.
By the way, as a former sailor, I always had this fear that they may be out there somewhere and they’d call for me while I was standing a low-visibility watch in the middle of the night.
Hi Beekeper!.
Thank you very much for dropping by!. I am really pleased to read your feedback and suggestions!…
I have heard about the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou?” as someone also mentioned it here (tehrefore just recently di!)… I plan to watch it…
As to Margaret Atwood’s poem “Siren Song”, I read it and found it beautiful, and quite touching.
Reading further I found this lines regarding the poem’s theme:
“Atwood gives us a slightly different spin on the whole Siren myth that’s not just about pretty songs and stupid sailors. Her speaker provides the Siren’s point-of-view, showing that it’s not as fun as it may look in The Odyssey. We kind of feel bad for the Sirens who appear trapped on that island with little to do besides luring sailors to their deaths. They’d prefer not to be “feathery maniacs,” singing boring songs, but since those sailors keep coming, what else can they do?
On a deeper level, the poem also explores the whole notion of the damsel-in-distress motif and the men who can’t help but play the hero. Atwood turns the predator/prey theme on its head, making that Siren call for help more like a call to death”
I am adding the two links here to the complete poem so that way I attach the poem to the comment section!.

Happy New Year and all the best to you Aquileana 😀
How interesting post. Maybe the expression in French: ” Tomber de Charybde en Scylla'” has origins here. This expression in French means in French “aller de mal en pis” and in English it means: “to go from bad to worse”.
All the best for this New Year 2015.
Sartenada!.. How interesting… Even more conisdering that I speak french (well a ittle bit!)~ A great comment my friend . I much appreciate it .
Wishing you a groovy New Year 2015. Aquileana 😀
The expression “Between Charybdis and Scylla” is also known in English, although lesser-used now than formerly–most are, regrettably, less literate and educated than formerly. I did not google it, but perhaps the more commonly-used English expression “Between a rock and a hard place” originated from that now lesser-known one.
Vielen Dank, Klaus… Glücklich Woche. Viele grüße, Aquileana 😀

Great post, Aquileana. Have you ever watched “O Brother, Where art Thou?” It’s a comedy remake of the Odyssey and there is a great scene that corresponds to the Sirens. Check it out.
Jeff
Hi dear jeff… Thanks for the suggestion… I’ll definitely check that film out… As a matter of fact someone also mentioned it above so I’ll have to watch it!.

Mi querida A.:
Mis (in)capacidades detectivescas salieron a la luz. 😀 😀 😀
¡Felicitaciones múltiples, A.! 😛
V.
~Vero!~

Bisous!, Aquileana 😛
Merci a toi!
Tu es une joie pour moi!
🙂
By coincidence, I was just listening to one of my favourite songs and was again struck by how uplifting and absorbing the effect is – I think the siren myth must be one of the first attempts to explain that power of music 🙂
And I seem to have completely forgotten that they were birds – I always picture them in the water – so, thanks for the refresher!
Happy new year to you, dear Aquileana 😀
Dear Sue ⭐
You are so right regarding music as a balsam to appease the beasts 😛
We tend to get confused… But as a matter of fact Mermaids are related to Nereids (with shape of fish) and Sirens are these pretty scary creatures, shaped as birds!… To make it even more complex, Homer’s “Odyssey” makes reference to singing sirens (with bird forms) coming from the water to tempt and distract Odysseus… I will make sure to state the differences in a future post about the Nereids!.
Happy 2015 ahead to you!. All the best, Aquileana 😀
Thanks @Blakefeline for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😀
Yes, I think it’s the Odysseus scene that confuses me – because it happens at sea I make the sirens into sea creatures.. :-$
Ah well, I’ll look forward to your Nereids post, dear Aquileana 🙂
Same happened to me dear Sue… It will be soon (I will be posting it on thrusday or friday I guess).
Happy weekend ahedad to you and best wishes, Aquileana 😀
I haven’t read up on The Sirens as much, but I definitely loving seeing how they were portrayed in the Pirates of the Caribbean. Wonderful post.
Lovely comment!… I truly appreciate it!.
Sending you all my best wishes. Aquileana 😀
Some of the figures in your photos I had seen but had not known represented Sirens, so this was another welcome education provided by the wonderful Aquileana–Thank you! 🙂

I’ve always loved the idea of The Sirens but hadn’t heard all the details. It does seem as if the ocean is singing to us at times so they could still be out there. It’s nice to see you again and to learn from your posts – thank you and happy new year!

Buongiorno Aquileana,
Happy New Year!
I do enjoy the various myths associated with the mythic monsters/creatures. Interesting how they are mainly female with animalistic attributes. It certainly worked in demeaning and relegating female goddesses in lesser roles than their male counterparts.
A wonderful post.
ciao
Luciana 😀
Hi dear Luciana, Thank you very much for sharing your clever insights over here …
By the way, I learnt through this post that mermaids are not sirens… mermaids would be nereids instead and sirens these birdish creatures!~.
Truly interesting to know that… In spanish we don’t have two words (mermaids, sirens) and we call both sirenas.
All the best to you cara amica. Buon anno 2015!, Aquileana 😀
Hi cara Aquileana
How fascinating to learn in Spanish there isn’t a separation for mermaids and sirens. No doubt, it would be similar in other languages. You’ve prompted me to check it out in Italian!
Wishing you all the best for 2015 cara amica
Luciana 😀
Cara Luciana!
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your clever comment!.
I guess the distintion wouldn’t be that clear in spanish (Just one word “Sirenas”) as It appears to be in english (“Sirens” and “Mermaids”).
I will have to do a little research too to check out how it works in other languages… But I can already tell you that in frecnh they also have one word: “Sirène”. Saluti e abbraccio, amica! Aquileana 😀
Thanks @ClucianaLuciana for sharing this post at Twitter,

Amazing post! There is no evidence of the SIRENS on Linear B tablets, but perhaps on Linear C. Anyway, the Mycenaeans had to have been familiar with them. Richafd

Aquileana, congratulations on your well-deserved awards! Wonderful post, “The Sirens, Muses of the Lower World”. Sirens are so magical and mystical. I always want to think of them as glorious and wondrous creatures, when in fact they are quite the opposite. They have been so romanticized. I hope that you enjoyed your holidays, and have a wonderful 2015, Happy New Year!
Always warm wishes,
Pepperanne
Hi dear Pepper!~
Excellent comment!… You are so right, Sirens have been totally romaticized…

Happy sunday and all the best to you, Aquileana 😀
Hola Aquileana,
Thank you for this link in answer to a question raised by one of the commentators regarding the sirens/mermaids confusion. I got really worried I committed a serious mythological crime when in my poem ‘A Song of Summer Love’ sirens appear as mermaids. Btw, it’s on page 13 in my book which you so kindly bought. Have a look.
http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/02/05/the-difference-between-mermaids-and-sirens/
The introduction from the link put my heart at rest:
“Somewhere along the literary and mythological road, mermaids and sirens got confused into one creature: a half-woman, half-fish creature known for her beautiful singing voice. Originally, it was only the mermaid that was a half-human, half-fish creature, and a singing voice wasn’t mentioned in early myths. Sirens were the singers, and they were actually half-woman, half-bird creatures.”
Great post, as usual! Wasn’t Odyssey a clever guy?
Happy New Year and a wonderful week ahead! Hugs, Irina 🙂
Thanks @kookadim for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 😀
Hi there Irina!.
Great comment as always…
Well those sirens on your poem wouldn’t be sirens but on “Neredeids”…
I plan to write about Nereids and the differeneces between them and Sirens on my next post!~
I will read your poem for sure!. Thanks for telling me about it!~….
And talking about poems and Sirens … Have you ever read Margaret Atwood’s poem “Siren Song”

This is a fabulous post Aquileana I have been putting posts together about each of the operas my album songs are from and the stories that a lot of them were based on. Your research is brilliant.
Best wishes Charlotte 😊
I’ve missed you, Aquileana! And I’m so happy to catch up at your blog. Oh…the siren’s call can be so tempting, so misleading! A beautiful, well-written, and enjoyable post as always, friend ❤

Reblogged this on Angie Mc's Reblog Love and commented:
The siren song was a promise to Odysseus of mantic truths; with a false promise that he will live to tell them, they sing:
“Once he hears to his heart’s content, sails on, a wiser man.
“We know all the pains that the Greeks and Trojans once endured
on the spreading plain of Troy when the gods willed it so
all that comes to pass on the fertile earth, we know it all!”
(Homer’s “Odyssey” 12.188–91).”
Bonjour Amalia,

Thank you very much!~ Hugs to you, Aquileana 😀
Wow! What interesting content you have on this blog, I have always been fascinated by ancient Greek culture, and especially mythology.
I’ll be slowly making my way through the rest of your blog. I can’t say exactly why I started by reading about the sirens first, it is almost as if I was lured to this particular post by them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the artwork you chose to illustrate this post too,
“Odyssues and the Sirens” by Herbert James Draper really brings the tales of the sirens to life for me.
Thanks for dropping by Chris and I am glad to know that you enjoyed the post and found new information regarding the Sirens.
By the way, your photographs are stunning!… Nice to connect with you.
All the best to you. happy sunday and week ahead. Aquileana 😀
PS: I am not sure if you also have a Photography blog now that I check your avitar… If you don’t sorry, I thought so! … Aquileana 😀
I have two blogs, Creative Nonfiction 313, and Bedlam & Chaos Review. I really need to get back to the latter and dust it off.
Thanks for visiting them both!

I’d never seen this one before. I didn’t realise they were supposed to be part bird… fascinating. Thanks so much and merry Christmas.
I know right… It was absolutely new for me as well, as I thought the Sirens looked more like mermaids…

[…] A little further digging learns us that many mermaid stories are not nice at all. In Greek mythology, the sirens were sea nymphs who lured sailors to their death with a bewitching song. According to Ovid, they were formerly handmaidens of Persephone. When the goddess was secretly abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, her mother and goddess Demeter gave the sirens the bodies of birds, and sent them to assist her in search of her daughter. This version explains why the Sirens were called “the Muses of the Lower World”. [4] […]
