►Greek Mythology: “The Golden Apple of Discord” /
►Poetry: “Who is The Fairest?”, by Christy Birmingham:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Garden of the Hesperides was Hera´s orchard, where either a single tree or a grove of immortality-giving golden apples grew. The apples were planted from the fruited branches that Gaia gave to Hera as a wedding gift when Hera accepted Zeus. The Hesperides were given the task of tending to the grove, but occasionally plucked from it themselves. Not trusting them, Hera also placed in the garden a never-sleeping, hundred-headed dragon named Ladon as an additional safeguard.
However, in the mythology surrounding “the Judgement of Paris”, the goddess of Discord Eris managed to enter the garden and pluck a golden apple.
Eris had become disgruntled after she was excluded from the wedding of Peleus and Tetis (Achilles ‘ parents).
Angered by this snub, Eris arrived at the celebration with a golden apple, which she threw into the proceedings, upon which was the inscription Kallisti ( ‘For the most beautiful one’ or ‘For the Fairest’).
Three goddesses claimed the apple: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Prince Paris of Troy as appointed to select the recipient.
While Paris inspected them, each attempted with her powers to bribe him; Hera offered to make him king of Europe and Asia, Athena offered wisdom and skill in war, and Aphrodite, offered the world’s most beautiful woman.
This was Helen of Sparta, wife of the Greek king Menelaus. Paris accepted Aphrodite’s gift and awarded the apple to her.
Later on, he abducted her, all of Greece declared war against Troy, causing the Trojan War and the eventual destruction of Troy.

►A Poem By Christy Birmingham: “Who is the Fairest?”
(Based on the Greek Myth of “The Golden Apple of Discord”):
If I transported back to mythical times,
Would I be the fairest?
Would I be the one to snatch the
Apple first, savoring the
Fruit, eyes and delight of all?
If so, I would stand above Athena, Hera and
Aphrodite, in this beauty contest that
Judges only our outer skin, revealing nothing of
Our spirits, as though denying us the
Opportunity to reveal our sweet, fruity tastes.
If I transported back to mythical times,
I wonder if I would also bribe Paris to win –
And what would I offer as the winning power?
Would it be savory or sweet?
Indeed, the golden apple caused quite the uproar,
An apple of discord not to be forgotten,
And I only hope that my winning power is
One day revealed,
As it is a blend unlike any other:
It is the ability to connect with you.

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a nice week!
I am proud to share this collaboration I did with the talented writer Aquileana of the blog La Audacia de Aquiles. It just published today! The project mixes Aquileana’s writing of Greek mythology (a great theme for her site!) with my poem that relates to her text. The theme of our collaboration is “the golden apple.” I hope you enjoy the read!
xo Christy
Thanks for reblogging this post, Aquileana 😀

Thank you… I really appreciate your words.. And I am sure Christy also does…
Best wishes, Aquileana 🙂
Awe, thanks Cynthia!! We appreciate it 🙂
Great post, Aquileana! The “apple” appears in many myths, but in some interpretations the apple has been replaced with either the pomegranate or an hallucinogenic mushroom. I have seen iconography where Adam and Eve are taking mushrooms.
Cheers!! – Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Well that is something I didn´t know…
If you ever came across again that kind of iconography, please would you send me the links?… Anyway, I will search it at Google later.
Thank you very much for your clever comment..
Hope you are having a marvelous day.
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
I just did a quick google search for “adam and eve mushroom” and got a lot of great pix. Check it out when you have time and let me know what you think. TTY soon!!
Jeff
Okay, Jeff thanks for checking that out for me.
I had heard the apple might be an orange or a nut but never a mushroom…
Will look for the pictures and give you my opinion later tonight…
Hugs, Aquileana 😛
Hi Jeff…
Sorry for the delay as to “Adam and Eve mushroom” … I have found and interesting article which indeed pointed in the direction you did abocve…
It says:
“The reputation of the fruit was deadly poison…
But they ate it anyway (And I add : They didn´t die)…
Eating the fuit is the act that enlightened Adam and Eve above the level of other animals… One capable of sutle reflection, they realized that their lives would one day come to an end …
They didn´t die from eating the fruit… This part of the story sounds like an echo of an ancient tribal taboo put on the mushroom by a shaman or priest”…
And then:
“A fresco in the 13th-century Plaincourault Abbey in France depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, flanking a Tree of Knowledge that has the appearance of a gigantic Amanita muscaria, a psychoactive mushroom. Terence McKenna proposed that the forbidden fruit was a reference to psychotropic plants and fungi, specifically psilocybin mushrooms, which played a central role, he theorized, in the evolution of the human brain” (At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbidden_fruit )
Images at:
1. http://www.egodeath.com/images/Plaincourault_web.jpg
And: 2. http://www.theyucatantimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/4.png
(2. Reference Mural painting of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit from the “Tree of Knowledge”. Mural from the apse of Sant Sadurní in Osormort Spain, 12th century)
It seems that the mushroom story behind the forbidden fruit might be associated with some heterodox interpretations… Quite esoteric, right?…
But the symbolism makes sense!!!
(Even more than the apple or cobnut I think)
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Good morning, Aquileana! I’m glad you found this interesting. With mythology, we are always grappling with the esoteric. The purpose of myth, imho, is to attempt to express the ineffable through symbols and metaphor. These are always open for interpretation. Another thing to consider when contemplating these myths is the issue of translation. Once a sacred text is translated, we get another layer of skin separating us from the seed of truth buried in the center.
I want to thank you again for your insightful and inspiring posts, and for taking the time to have these conversations with me. I’ve been enjoying our discussions 🙂
Have a wonderful day!! — Jeff
Good afternoon, Jeff…
Thanks for sharing your insights… I agree with you as to hermeneutics and how meaningful might differ according to interpretativos and sometimes even change completely after the original texts are translated…
Best wishes and Thank you for your clever comments…
Aquileana 😀
Hail Discordia!
Yes, that was eloquent ah?…
Best regards, Aquileana 😛
Please look up Discordianism if not aware, this story is familiar to that particular scene…
I will search that online… Thanks for the suggestion… It is much appreciated …
Best regrads, Aquileana 😀
Thanks for your sugestion as to Discordianism…
A fellow blogger did a throrough reaserch on the subject and it is amazingly interesting… (See comments by María F below)

Good to see them get their due!
Thank you for dropping by and sharing your insights… Much appreciated, Uncle Tree.

Thanks Uncle Tree!!
Gracias a ti y a Christy.
((I need translation!!))
What a beautiful post and poetry!
Hi Inese… Great to know that you enjoyed the post…
Best wishes to you, dearest …
Aquileana 🙂
Thanks Inese and nice to meet you here too!

have you read what happened to those who made Gods envious?
They will have to bear the consequences for tempting the Gods… They might be severely punished!
Cheers !, Aquileana 😀
they were very severely punished- hair turned into snake, woman turned into spider…
That’ s quite harsh!…
Cheers, Aquileana 🙂
Yay! Way to go ChristyB – lovely poetry – as usual (I had to add that – as usual, because you’ve set such high standards 🙂

fascinating as always – I love these tales – a goddess snubbed and oh dear, what events are set in motion….
That was certainly a brief but pithy summary, Freya 🙂

Your comment is highly appreciated.
Good luck to you, Aquileana 🙂
A fine post and as usual so very interesting! Loved the poem as well … now the only thing is, I’m going to forget about apples for a while, very dangerous fruit … and here they say that they keep doctors away. Have a great weeik Aquileana and thanks for the lovely work!
Thank you very much for dropping by Bastet…
Indeed apple might be a dangerous fruit and if they are golden ones, even more, as they might trigger rivalry and feelings such as greed and envy.
Glad to read your words today!…
Best wishes and I hope you have nice day,
Aquileana 🙂
Ah … and you don’t know the half of it … Trentino is a great producer of Golden Delicous apples! It was a pleasure to read you piece and happy to drop by. I really like how you added the poem a great idea!
Best wishes to you too and have a great week-end. Georgia.
Thank you for telling me that, Georgia… I am looking forward to visiting Italy one of these days.
I hope you have a Wonderful and poetic weekend,
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
Thanks Aquileana … hope you make it to the Belpaese soon! 🙂
Oh how beautiful Georgia… I have family in the north of Italy… One day, I’ ll be there (hopefully in the near future)…
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
That is too cool! What part of the North, I’m in Trentino as you may remember and we border with Lombardia and Veneto. It’s be fun to meet you one day!
They are in Veneto… My dad travels a lot to Italy for job issues…I still haven’ t been there though.. I ‘ d love to meet you too, Sweet Georgia…
Baccio cara mia, Aquileana 🙂
Un abbraccio! BTW Veneto is just under us … my son goes to university in Padova! Who knows what the future holds … 🙂
There is a town named Pedemonte close to where you live right?
Check out map!.
Buona settimana per te; cara Georgia… arrivederci.
Aquileana 😛
Cool …the photo looks like Trentino could even be mistaken for the town I live in! It’s right on our border I’ve been through it a couple of times going to Padova. It used to be part of Trentino until 1929 and there’s a popular movement that wishes to be reconnected to Trentino!
The place must be close to or in Trentino, then … A tiny village… I think the shield of the town has olives and a bunch of grapes, as I have seen in photos…
Abbraccio, Georgia, Aquileana 😛
Yep it sure is and some never forget that it was Trentino. Ciao a presto Aquileana! Buona giornata. Georgia 🙂
Great Post again, funny how women always get shown as the center of these stories as the cause of all ills?xx Rachel
I am glad to know that you enjoyed the post…
And I agree with your insights as the women and their roles in these myths…
Women and apples make a lethal blast!…
Best wishes, Aquileana 😛
A beautiful collaboration of Greek mythology and poetry! One complements the other. Well done. Enjoyed your post, Aquileana. 🙂 Kind regards, Iris.

Thanks @samknovels for sharing this post at Twitter,
Aquileana 🙂
What a wonderful post, Dear Aquileana, and the collaboration with Christy on the poem is a great touch! You know they say about Helen that her face launched a thousand ships, but after reading this post I think it’s more “fair” to say it was Aphrodite’s face, don’t you agree? Or maybe it’s even more appropriate, if not a tad ironic, that it was the “apple of discord” that caused the Trojan War!
Btw I just spun off another cycle of the Wonderful Team Member Readership Award which you awarded me with, thanks very much, dearheart, once again! The post is here:
https://aishasoasis.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/edenkeeper-article-egypt-illuminates-ancient-alleyways-with-solar-lights/
have a great weekend, Aquileana!
♥♥♥ ;^)))
Hi Aisha,
Thanks for sharing your insights here… Glad that you liked the collaboration with Christy Birmingham …
One thing is definite: that the apple of Discord was the first kick, followed by Aphrodite ´s proposal to Paris…
So I guess that both points on your comment are correct!…
I will stop by your Oasis in a while, sweetie…
Best wishes and happy weekend ahead to you to,
Aquileana 😛
Thanks @AishasOasis for sharing this post at Twitter,

Lovely poem. And I love the last 2 lines:
“As it is a blend unlike any other:
It is the ability to connect with you.”
“The contemporary religion Discordianism draws upon the Golden Apple of the goddess Eris, also known as the “Apple of Discord”, which Eris used to set off the conflict among the goddesses of Olympus that lead to the Trojan War because she was not invited to a party (the so-called “Original Snub”) Emblazoned upon the apple is the word “Kallisti” (“to the fairest”). ”
“The religion [Discordianism] has been likened to Zen, based on similarities with absurdist interpretations of the Rinzai school, as well as Taoist philosophy. Discordianism is centered on the idea that both order and disorder are illusions imposed on the universe by the human nervous system, and that neither of these illusions of apparent order and disorder is any more accurate or objectively true than the other.”-Wiki
The “Apple of Discord” may be the world of the “absurd”, continually perpetuating itself through human deeds.
Renowned North American actress Bette Davis once said:
“I am doomed to an eternity of compulsive work. No set goal achieved satisfies. Success only breeds a new goal. The golden apple devoured has seeds. It is endless.”-Bette Davis (1908-1989)
An existentialist dilemma seems to arise out of whether all these apples will be “appropriate”, or “ripe”, nevertheless, as Bette Davis very well said, the apple is already THERE, despite it being “golden”, and it is “endless”, as she very well described,” as “No set goal goal achieved satisfies…”
“Success”, as she says, defines whether you’ve been the “fairest”, or not… Furthermore, it also seems to require an “eternity of compulsive work”…
“Success”, in the context of humanity, as symbolised through the “Golden Apple”, may also mean “communication”, the antithesis to “The Apple of Discord”. May we all communicate peacefully…
Very interesting, dear María…. Even when this seems to vbe a sort of sect and not sure if an official religion (?)…
You said:

Cool ideas… I second the last one point as to success (Golden Apple)…
I share your wishes to…
Thanks for your clever contributions… It is always a pleasure to read your comments…
I hope you have a great and “succesful” week ahead, dear María 😉
Aquileana 😀
Definitely a sect. Just was interesting to read about it, but I’m definitely not into sects at all. Just was an interesting way for me to understand how they created it.
I know… There are too many alternative religions nowadays…
By the way, they are less orthodox…
Alternative perspectives… And some of them may have interesting approachs as regard to certain subjects…
Best wishes , Aquileana 🙂
This is a fabulous post and collaboration! Thank you!!!
Thank you very much for your kind words, Resa…
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
Reblogged this on Apollo's Raven and commented:

Thanks for reblogging this post, Linnea…
Best wishes to you.
Aquileana 😉
He adorado tu ultima frase …. 😀
Sos un as… Gracias por los avezados datos…
Un abrazo, Aquileana 😀
This story of Helen and Paris and Troy is one of my favorite in mythology. Christy your poem is beautifully matched to the story and begs the question of human nature . . . would we succumb to same if given the chance? 🙂 ❤
Hi DG…
Well I think it would be hard to avoid all those tempations…
Bottom line: I think we would probably succumb 😉
Thanks a lot for dropping by and for your nice words here,
Best wishes, Aquileana 😀
My pleasure 🙂
Thanks @pokercubster for sharing this post at Twitter,

Really glad to know that you enjoyed our collaboration…
Thank you very much for dropping by.

Even the immortals couldn’t resist temptation ;D The basis for the Garden of Eden story, an apple which really was an orange! Got to love mythology. Excellent post and a wonderful collaboration cara amica ;D x
Indeed, an apple, an orange, a nut or even a mushroom!…
Abraccio, Aquileana 😛
Pretty work Aquileana ❤ Happy Week dear
Thank you evry much Leyla ❤
Many hugs to you, Aquileana 😀
I am stunned by the beauty of this blog. I love the classical mythology and the classical oil paintings. It deeply appeals to the part of me I call an “artist” and puts my humble creations to shame.
I am really glad to read your words and to know that these posts call the artistis in you (not to feel ashamed of your creations though!)

Loved this combined interesting subject of the Golden Apple and big smiles as temptation and betrayal jealousies and revenge entwine all in the tree 🙂 You have delivered yet another stunning post along with more wonderful paintings..
I loved Christy’s poem, I so admire Chirsty’s writing and poetry and she has told the tale perfectly within her words… 🙂

Hi Sue,
How nice to read your comment today…
Thanks for sharing your insights as to golden apples and what they might entrain… I much appreciate your words
Also glad that you liked Christy’s poem…
I agree with you, she has perfectly re-told a myth adding poetic blends and creativity….
So thank you also on behalf of her, Sue…

Lovely to see all the different depictions of the Judgement of Paris.
Thank you Gallivanta… It is a pleasure to read your comment today.
Best wishes, Aquileana 🙂

Buenas tardes. 🙂

Thank you so much for dropping by my site with your warmth and for following, too♥
I know too little of Greek mythology (which I still like learning of) but still, Athena has always been one of my favourite goddesses and learning of her stories is always a delight. 🙂
Do take care and stay well, too.
Thanks dear B* for dropping by to read and comment. I am pleased to know that you enjoyed this posts and that you are following the blog… Regarding Athena, guess what?!. I still didn’t write on her, so hopefully you’ll be able to read about your favorite Greek Goddess very soon!. I am wishing you all the very best, Aquileana 😀

Congrats Aquileana, Im happy for you https://mynameistune.wordpress.com/2015/04/01/aquileena-congratulations-on-getting-six-million-views/
Thanks for the awesome message! You made my day! All my best wishes, Aquileana 😀
You’re welcome….wow, I’m sooo shocked at your number of views,…after how long did u reach 1 million???
The first million is hard to reach… You got it… I think it might have taken me like 3 years… Anyhow the key factor here is the make connections. To follow lots of blogs and make sure to plus them… I have a email list with bloggers, put all them al together and usually after I posted I make sure to visit them … like taking it easy, you know. But bopttom line, it is a sort of blog management stuff which counts I´d say…
Best to you and feel free to ask me if you need something regarding blogs! I can help you! Aquileana 😀

Very fascinating. I love the Greek myths. They just have so much “style” to them compared to other mythologies. And I had no idea the whole Helen of Troy thing started with forbidden fruit. Amazing how much it parallels Genesis.

Thanks a lot for sharing. You are awesome, my friend … xx ❤
Learned by You ❤ ❤ ❤
This is excellent as usual. Eris in a round about way featured in the Illuminati trilogy and also Billy and Mandy’s Grim Adventures. Sorry my mind wanders.
Thank you dear Alan …. Also for the references… You are so intelligent!…. Wishing you a great day. All the best to you 😉 ❤
I love the Illuminati trilogy, completely paranoid and brilliant. There is a society called the Discordians whose symbol is a bitten apple and the ELF, the Erisian Liberation Front. Eris is vain and gap toothed in Grim Adventures… loved that cartoon, lots of mythological references and the cute Mandy was bad-ass, would quote Alestair Crowley.
I am bit clueless as to this issue… But I learnt something via a Youtuber called Ryan Higa… He is quite brilliant and funny… It was a reference linked to Beyoncé song´s Lemonade… Lemons and apples. He mentions Apple the brand, and related everything to the Illuminati.
Thanks for the interesting stuff here. I ´ll try to look for more information, as it sounds fascinating … And You & I will hopefully do something together on blogs. We can arrange something by March if you are okay (I already have a few things scheduled: a two post- series on Tarot included). xx 😀
Oh the Tarot… one of my favourite subjects…if you want to make it a three parter I would certainly be up for that. Which angle are you approaching it from? As for the Illuminati trilogy it was written in the 70’s long before the current tin foil hat wave of interest and just has a lot on secret societies and especially the original Bavarian Illuminati and there technique of infiltrating a secret society and taking it over. Bakunin and Blanqui to a certain extent followed these techniques. The book is firmly tongue in cheek and a shaggy dog story.
Awesome that you are into it as well… I bought the classic deck “Rider Waite” and started learning a bit from YouTube (a particular good tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDEatDUGf-A&feature=youtu.be … It covers both Major and Minor Arcana … Plus other stuff…
YES!. Let´s do a three part series. I was planning to do: 1. Origins, Introduction and Major Arcana … 2. Minor Arcana and one example of a spread (a blogger friend already provided me the example and we did an analysis together) … You could join my in the first post… Or we can think of a thrid installment… maybe a bit more creative. We could add another spread (like the Celtic Cross, which one could find online: you could write a poem if you want)… IDK… That would be by january, February and March eventually. I won´t be posting until next year (not so far away though).
Think it over!… I am open to any ideas you have …
As to the Illuminati issue. Well that bitten apple you had mentioned before REALLY sounds like the Apple Logo. Oh!?. I often watch stuff on Youtube, I will see what I can find as to this tonight. Sending love 😀
I have a Marseilles pack, a Swiss J something or another, the Rider Waite, a pack I brought in Rome and a New Orleans derivative… I collect packs. I tend to stick to the Marseilles and the Swiss (which is a variation on the Marseilles. The Rider Waite is the most popular for esoteric purposes. The Minor Arcana is the base for the modern deck…you probably know this but on the numerology of the modern deck…52 cards for 52 weeks, 4 suits for 4 seasons, 12 court cards for 12 months and if you add up the total of the pips it equals 364… 365 and a quarter is a bit too much of an ask… for the days of the year… yes let’s
That´s amazing! … I hadn´t noticed or read about the hidden numerology… So great that you have all those decks!. (I remember you once posted photographs of the Marseille deck, by the way!: maybe you can take some pics for our post as well)…. let´s do a separate post. probably a third one … Unless I can everything I told you in one post (which sounds a bit too much!). It will be an amazing post: I am sure. Thanks for agreeing. I´ll let you know in due time, quite surely to post by March/ April. Hugs 😀
Yes it will be good…by the way the structure of my book is in part influenced by the Tarot…hint hint…just let me know which parts you want to write about… also maybe the third post could be its influence on the arts and literature?
That ´s cool (re the structure of your book)… Yes, how Tarot might have influenced Arts and Literature sounds great … I will probably mention certain resemblances between Greek Mythology characters and cards from the Rider Waite deck… ((The most clear one, for me till the moment is The Magician and Hermes). That would be probably as the cards show up during the analysis.
I am open to new ideas and whatever you think could work. You can add a poem from your book or new poem if you wish.
We have a lot of time to clarify details, anyway. So we´ll see how it unfolds when we are getting closer! 😉 Have a great day Monsier Cake 😉 xx
Yes we can iron out ideas later, though I will probably send you some ideas a little earlier, I am fascinated by the character of The Magician myself. With the Rider Waite deck they certainly loaded with references to mythology and the Kabbalah! I am sure I can think of a new poem in time.
Excellent. I am sure the post will be outstanding! We´ll stay in touch… If you have something, just email me…. 😀
I will, trust me I will.
Good! 😀 xxx 🙂
